Principals Report

I t has been great to have all year

levels back learning on-site. Last

week began with students clearly

very happy to be back on site and

teaching and learning began looking

very normal again.

The challenge at present is for teaching

staff to determine the learning that has,

and has not, occurred over the past

seven weeks. Class teachers will contin-

ue to prioritise the essential learning as

they prepare for the learning over the

remainder of the year. There will be a

need for teachers to adapt future learn-

ing with the knowledge that the foun-

dational knowledge, skills and under-

standing may not be as strong given the

challenges associated with remote

learning.

Parents will notice that the Semester 1

reports will look somewhat different as

a result of remote learning. Student

reports will, where possible, show stu-

dent progression against the Standards

of the Victorian Curriculum. In some

instances, however, class teachers may

not be able to confidently grade stu-

dent progression and progression

points will not appear on the report.

Class teachers will report on the assess-

ment completed by students in term 1

and on modified assessment completed

during, and on the return from, remote

learning.

Parents and carers are asked to please

note that Term 3 normally begins with

Year 11 into 12 (2021) subject selection,

the Year 10/Later Years Information

Evening and Course Counselling. Each

of these will likely look very different to

previous years given the social distanc-

ing restrictions currently in place. The

Year 10/Later Years Information Even-

ing will be presented virtually and fur-

ther information regarding this will be

communicated in the coming weeks.

While the College has recently sought

feedback on their remote learning ex-

perience from families and students,

the Department of Education and Train-

ing (DET) is similarly seeking feedback.

Details of how families and students

can provide further detail will be com-

municated in the coming days via Com-

pass.

Principals Report cont...

The past week saw a virtual assembly for all Year 7-

10 students where they were welcomed back to the

College and encouraged to make the most of the

learning opportunities that are available to them. I

think it is a great time for parents and carers to have

this conversation with students to support them to

be ready to learn so that they can achieve their full

potential. This includes students ensuring that they

take all the required equipment to class, have a

charged laptop, the right attitude and are in full

school uniform. Please also take a moment to remind

your student of the expectations around the use of

mobile phones.

While very little sport has been occurring over recent

months, I have recently become aware of the success

of Year 8 student Xavier Williams earlier in the year

in placing third in the Under 15 Victorian Downhill

Mountain Bike Series and want to acknowledge this

fabulous achievement. As community sport returns

to some relative normality I look forward to hearing

of the achievements of other students and sharing

their success with our College community!

WHAT IS A STUDY SCORE?

A study score shows how well you have performed in a study at Unit 3 and 4 level, compared to everybody else in Victoria who took that study. Study scores calculated by the VCAA will be used by the Victorian Tertiary Admissions Centre (VTAC) to calculate the ATAR. The maximum study score is 50. Each year, and for every study, the mean study score is set at 30. For studies with large enrol-ments (1,000 or more):

2% of students will get a score on or above 45

9% of students will get a score on or above 40

26% of students will get a score on or above 35

53% of students will get a score on or above 30

78% of students will get a score on or above 25

93% of students will get a score on or above 20

Despite its name, the Study Score is not actually a score out of 50. It is a ranking or relative position which shows a student's perfor-mance compared with all other students who took that study in that year.

How is the Study Score Calculated?

At Unit 3 and 4 level, there are three Graded Assessments for each study, consisting of School-assessed Coursework (SACs), School-assessed Tasks (SATs) and examinations.

UNIT 3 SACS/SATS – Graded Assessment 1

UNIT 4 SACS/SATS – Graded Assessment 2

EXAM - Graded Assessment 3

To calculate the study score, the VCAA combines the standardised scores for each of your Graded Assessments. Each graded assess-ment in a study contributes a specific percentage, or weighting, to the final study score.

Once the scores have been standardised, weighted and totalled your total score is compared with the scores of all other students in that study and then converted to a score out of 50.

Bellarine Landcare News

From the Nursery

What a resilient community we live in! The silver lining of our recent crisis has been the

ability for people to spend time at home & on their properties planting trees!!

Thank you to the many grant recipients & private landholders who have been collecting

their plants. Also to the countless homeowners across the peninsula who are planting gar-

dens for habitat & wildlife purposes, our ‘New Normal’ way of life will hopefully have a

positive effect on our environment. Thank you also to our wonderful group of volunteers

that kept the nursery going over our lockdown time - with many working independently at the nursery to assist with the everyday

tasks while being socially distant.

If you are using this time for planning & weed control in preparation for planting in 2021, please do get in touch - as we are starting to

take orders for next season.

Planting has also begun on the Drysdale bypass, anybody travelling near Peninsula Drive & the nearby bike paths will notice a newly

planted batch of 6,508 Knobby Club-rush (Ficinia nodosa) & 1,541 Spiny-headed mat-rush (Lomandra longifolia). I look forward to the

transformation of the site & will look out for the return of our local fauna.

Please note that the Nursery is currently operating on an Appointment Only basis, please do call before heading down to help us keeping our social distancing guidelines in place. Contact me on 0439 392 369 or email [email protected]

ISSUE 9 | 15TH JUNE 2020

Community News Good News Story—Ex-Bellarine Secondary College Student

Tessa Hayward, Geelong Advertiser | June 13, 2020

Gabe McClelland is starting the conversation about men’s mental

health.

Gabe McClelland knows how important it is to be a man of more

words, which is why he created Hey Mate – a safe space for men to

talk.

GABE McClelland is an open book when it comes to his mental

health journey – but that was not always the case.

At age 12, Gabe experienced significant deaths in his family and

began experiencing severe anxiety, which turned into Obsessive

Compulsive Disorder.

Like many young men, he was guarded about his battles, believing

that putting your hand up for help was a sign of weakness.

Now, aged 28, Gabe knows how important it is to be a man of more

words. It is both a reminder tattooed on his arm and the philosophy

behind his new venture, Hey Mate, an online platform for men to

connect through vulnerable conversations, movement and banter.

“Men’s health has always been incredibly important to me because I

have been through my own battles,” Gabe, who grew up in Ocean

Grove and now lives in Point Lonsdale, explains.

Gabe says the way he markets Hey Mate is to eliminate any expectation on actually speaking. And even if you are not experiencing

poor mental health right now, your presence could be a comfort to others. “The message is whether you need us in your life or not,

sometimes showing up is more important,” he explains. And the concept has proven popular. In the eight weeks since the platform

started, it has grown from one group of 10 people to two groups with up to 15 men in each. Gabe says the small group sizes ensure

each man, should they wish, has an opportunity to have their voice heard in a space that is not intimidating. The topics the men cover

during the Friday night catch ups are intentionally thought provoking. In many ways Gabe says this allows men to be themselves, free

from expectation. “We encourage a safe space. There is no right or wrong and what is said in that room stays in that room,” he says. “I

think regardless of COVID-19, men finding their words is vital. “I say to the group each week there is no expectation to talk, but I do

encourage you to. Generally if your heart is racing it is a sign you need to speak up.” Of course, there is a lighthearted element too,

aimed at helping to break down the barriers ahead of the deeper topics.

Men’s Health Week, which commences nationwide on Monday (15th June), provides an opportunity to raise the profile of the varied

physical and mental health challenges men face and the services available to assist. “I experienced anxiety on quite a severe level with

panic attacks and not really understanding the way I was feeling. “I kept to myself and was reserved. I missed out on a lot of things like

staying over at friends houses and school camps.” His experience with OCD was equally life-limiting.

After finishing year 12 and starting a carpentry apprenticeship, Gabe started running. Fitness quickly became his biggest escape. “The

ability to own my own breath and my own thoughts – nothing else matters when I’m running,” he says. “From there I got super fit,

came off my medication and just continued to have the conversations I needed.” Gabe met his girlfriend Bree Filippone, an exercise

scientist and personal trainer, five years ago and says she is one of his biggest sources of inspiration. “It has been amazing to have a

partner that I can run with, we have the same goals, the same purpose, she’s my best friend,” Gabe beams. Together the couple found-

ed The Finishr, a community-focused and inclusive running group aimed at promoting the benefits of

exercise. The program celebrated its first birthday in March with 160 participants.

“We have created a community … well the community has created itself really, we just show up,”

Gabe laughs. Upon reflection, he says he is proud of how he has coped during the pandemic, not only

prioritising self-care but also having the strength to lend a hand to others. “Six years ago it would

have looked a lot different,” he reflects. “Filling other peoples cups up, fills mine, that’s the most

important thing.”

“I knew it would be hard to get men on board at

first. It’s difficult sometimes to put your hand up

with the stigma around those types of conversa-

tions,” he says. “Once I got a few guys on board

we set off and it has picked up legs.”
