ass media – TV, Mobiles, Internet-

Facebook, Twitter etc. has led the modern

man astray. It has changed his life from good Mto bad. Let us compare “Then and Now” - before the

advent of mass media and after.

1. Then: Our children learnt on slate and notebook

with chalk, pencil and pen. Tables were

memorised for calculations. Mind was sharp.

Students and people visited libraries and read

many books. Now: Today, access to knowledge has become easier. Knowledge is ready made. Children learn directly from computer, internet sources and TV. Calculators, rapidex and readymade study tools are widely used by all. Hence, mind has become dull and less creative.

2. Then: Our children were afraid to appear in

public, trembled to give public speeches, bowed

before their elders and teachers. Humility was

considered to be a great virtue. Now: Today, children aged 3-4 years give public speeches, song and dance performances. The children aged 10-12 years studying at international schools, visit factories and offices to interview public servants and social workers. Self-confidence and pride is the hallmark.

3. Then: People had concentration and patience.

They could listen to sermons, talks, religious

discourses for hours together and even, spend

days at seminars, celebrations and get-togethers.

Silence was very much cherished. Now: Due to TV and internet, people can't concentrate on anything for more than 5-8 minutes,if it is not an audio visual medium. Hence even talks and religious discourses have to be given with the help of Power Point presentations. They can't attend a mass or any other program for more than an hour. Patience is less, silence is nil. People are, rather, afraid of silence. Hence, they want the TV noise at home, loud music during functions and even high-

pitched church choirs.

4. Then: The entire family gathered together in

the evening for prayer, rosary and scripture

reading. Now: The family, today, gathers before the TV and spends time either surfing the internet or chatting on Facebook.

5. Then: The family enjoyed meal times sharing

not only food but also their daily problems,

difficulties and lighter moments. Conversation

was seen as the binding force among the

members. Now: Today, family members seldom come together. Among those present – one eats before the TV, other before the internet and

another with the mobile. When we visit the families, today, we come across each one busy with their own chores - either sleeping or bathing or watching TV or surfing internet or getting ready to go to work. Healthy family life seems to be dwindling.

6. Then: In many parishes, the laity took active

part in organizing cultural programs and hence,

talents were recognized and opportunities were

given for creativity to be displayed at all levels.

People experienced communitarian solidarity. Now: In some parishes, today, people have become mere passive spectators therefore, talents and creativity has been buried; many just fulfil their Sunday obligation and disappear. We see a lack of concern and community spirit.

7. Then: Families enjoyed picnics and excursions

in natural surroundings and historical places. Now: Everything is consumed by big cities, malls, theatres and shopping centers where people sometimes spend hours at a stretch.

8. Then: People lived according to their need.

Last date to submit articles and advertisements is 4th June 2012.

They had few desires, wants and aspirations.

Hence, they were satisfied with what they had or

the few things that were available in the market. Now: Greed has overtaken man. The needs are generated and multiplied every day by TV advertisements and channels, newspapers and posters, products with attractive packaging. These lure consumers to buy more than what they really need. Thus, our shelves are full of clothes, kitchen with utensils, houses with gadgets, showcases with things.

9. Then: The family enjoyed home- cooked food

which was healthy and tasty.Hence, people lived longer and happier. Wastage of food was unheard of. There was reverence for the food. Even the left over was used for the next meal.

Now: Today, the media has glamourised fast

food culture - burgers, sandwiches, KFC chicken,

McDonald's, pizza etc. People like to eat out

spending lot of money and even at the risk of

their health. This has resulted in sicknesses like

obesity, cancer, high blood pressure, diabetes etc.

which has shortened the average life-span of man.

Today, in some families how much food is

wasted? They cook more than needed and do not

consume even half of it. At times, they eat out and

thus the whole food is wasted.

Let us be aware of these negative influences of mass media and use the media for the betterment of our lives.

Lent through EastertideLent through Eastertideent through Eastertide, calls each one of us to walk in the light of Christ, a time of renewal of heart, mind and spirit. It is the primary time for celebrating the Sacrament of Penance, because Lent is the season for Lbaptismal renewal and also an intense period of preparation for Easter.

The Lenten period is used to “give up” something we enjoy or rely on, as part of our personal repentance and commitment to the suffering that Christ experienced – it could be some behavior, some lifestyle pattern, our way of thinking about others etc. This is a time when we could “offer” our “unwanted desires”, and stop hiding from God's love, a time to find out the barrier between us and Christ, and live in complete fullness of God through Christ's example and his ever present love.

When we walk in the light of Christ, we become more aware of those walking alongside us on life's journey. We become more concerned for each other, more attentive to other's needs, thus becoming grateful for everyone in our lives. This is a time not only to go deeper into our prayer life, fasting and thanksgiving, but also help one another to do so, thus letting our light to shine forth for all to see.

Our challenge today is to renew our understanding of this important season of the liturgical year and to see how we can integrate our personal practices into this renewed perspective. Our goal should not just be to abstain from sin for the duration of Lent but to root sin out of our lives forever and “to emerge a stronger and more vital person of faith” from the time we enter this period.

Let us also take a look at the relationship between the Church and the mass media through the articles in this issue.

Many of us are creatively using this instrument, exploring its potential to assist in the tasks of evangelization and

education, as well as for internal communication. However, alongside the Internet and other new means of

communication, the traditional ones also remain highly useful means within a complete panorama of Church

communications. On this note, the team of 'Tidings' wish each one of you a transforming Lenten period and a joyous Easter Season.

lot is spoken today with respect to the A

effect of media on religion. And when I say media I don't only mean cinema and other sorts of visuals. I'm talking about every single kind of it. Right from Radio to Music

CD's, Newspapers to magazines, Television to

70 mm screens in our multiplexes etc. Each of the mentioned has its unique and diverse yet strong effect on the faith of a person.

The influence of media on faith has always been a common topic between generations, parents guiding children what to watch, what to read and what to listen. But somewhere down the line our stereotypic vision on media does affect our judgment. We leave aside our rational thinking and go with orthodox thoughts to judge our entertainment. It is true that many artists in any field do give in to worldly ways to gain fame and prosperity. It is also true that a lot of the entertainment in today's world do affect us in a negative way without us even knowing. Even though of all this that is present in today's world we should always know how to be logical in deciding what our minds should consume.

Studies have noted that majority of the youth today ape what they see on television. To be frank I believe television has a huge role in westernization. Kids today know everything that's going on round the world. We all are familiar with the concept that when you tell someone not to do something it gets him or her more curious to do it. Quite the same principle can be applied to youth and entertainment. If bluntly told not to 'enjoy' something, it does get them more curious. A logical reasoning with a strong baseline as to why not to do something really does help in guidance rather then plain stated rules.

Media as we know it can be strongly used in inculcating as well as propagating faith and goodwill.

Inspirational books, Gospel Music, Positive movies etc. are a great help in spreading a positive vibe among the crowds. We tend to make a few mistakes by judging the modernization of media as a bad turn. A few up beats in music, A little more rational and logical in writing good faith books or a little inclusion of art in cinema does not deem it as inappropriate.

I think its time we let our mind do a little more work and think before we make a judgment. Its time we let creativity merge with positivity to spread peace and love around. As said by Allen Ginsberg 'Whoever controls the media – the images – controls the culture'. So let's use the power of our minds and strength of our faith and reshape the world.

Tidings (Vol.2.4) - 08 - March-2012

Addiction to PornAddiction to Pornddiction is anything we get dependent on, and I Acannot think of my life without it. Generally

addiction keeps on growing in our life. Do you, as a normal person enjoy being a slave to someone? In addiction we are slaves not to someone but to something. You can be addicted even to drinking tea or watching T.V. Addiction is an active belief in commitment of oneself to a negative way of life. Addiction begins and grows when a person abandons natural ways of getting emotional needs satisfied: warm, healthy relationships with others, one's family, with oneself and with the spiritual powers are abandoned. Often teenager's attraction to various addictions is precipitated and accelerated, when they don't see strong values, mutual warm affection and undiscouraged mutual forgiveness in their homes.

Pornography

Pornography is a distortion of sexuality. It comes from the word “Porni” (prostitute) and “Graphein” (to write).

So pornography etymologically means “Prostitute writing”.Pornography is anything (pictures, movies, writings) that exploits and dehumanizes sex. Human beings, especially women become mere sex objects. Pornography eventually causes spiritual and ethical blindness.

N.B: Certain forms of art and literature (e.g. paintings of Michelangelo, Song of Songs in Old Testament) may be sexually explicit but without any dehumanization and degradation. (For more information refer: Lord Longferd, “Pornography”, London: Coronet Books, 1972).

The use of pornography for obtaining illegitimate sexual pleasure and inducing sexual lust leading to the orgasmic relief of masturbation can be the source of extensive demonization. Today such pictures are pushed daily in front of us on news and magazines. You and I, as Christians should not be trapped into it. (Peter

Horrobin,“Healing through Deliverance: The practice of deliverance Ministry”, India: Ben books, 2007).

Who Are The Victims?

Research shows largest number of porn victims belong to 12-17 age groups (In USA). 20% of adults in USA visit porn. 35% of all downloads are pornographic. It is an annual 60 billion US dollars industry (More information: Internet Pornography statistics. html/internetfilter review)

A Porn Victim Can Liberate Himself

Counseling - Most porn victims need a counselor but he should be sensitive to the feelings of the victim. The counselor should avoid an attitude of criticism and humiliation. He should respect the victim as a person and have lot of patience. The counselor should also encourage spiritual resources (Bible, Prayer, sacraments). Shivraj Mahendra in his book “A Christian Response to pornography” gives seven steps to break the stronghold of pornography.

In this brief article, I give nine aspects of cure and healing, taking into account important points of Shivraj Mahendra. I call them aspects because “steps” may mean they are to be practiced only one after another.

Aspect 1: Realize the serious destructive effects of porn for your future, especially for your married life. Some psychiatrists, even Christian ones, advise couples having rough time sexually to indulge in a bit of pornography to get them sexually excited. There may be short term gains from that so called therapy. But research shows long term pain and frustration form such practice. (Ref: Peter Horrobin, Healing Through Deliverance)

Aspect 2: Realize you are going ahead for a serious break away from Jesus Christ, your salvation. Come back to Jesus. Act it out in your room. Pour, with your hands symbolically the precious blood of Jesus on yourself, kneel and raise your hands.

Aspect 3: Realize God is present in all places. Keep your door and window open. Place a picture of Jesus on your laptop or front wall.

Aspect 4: Examine the occasions or situations that urge you into porn and avoid them. Confide this to a good friend. Avoid being lonely, be social. Repeat your focusing in life.

Fr. Michael Morris

OCD

Aspect 5: Be determined for a happy and healthy use of your eyes. Eyes are windows of the mind and heart. Eyes give you porn thoughts and then thoughts become irresistible. Such irresistible thoughts elicit strong desire and desire pulls you into action (internet, T.V etc.).

Aspect 6: Choose persons, friends of strong character. Don't feel shy to open up. There are fellowships (e.g. CH.C Group) that are strongly rooted in prayer, mutual support and confidentiality. You, Christ and such fellowship friends make it easy for you to break the chains of porn.

Aspect 7: Psychologists speak of the cleansing and good feeling effects of catharsis. When you feel the porn urge, come out of your room, go down and play with your society people, do some push-ups or skipping in the hall of your flat. Read the Bible; memorize Ps.51, 119, 9-11, James 1. 14-15, 1Cor 6.18-20. Go to the Blessed Sacrament and remain there with full trust in your victory. Aspect 8: Take one day at a time. And remember the feelings of discouragement are greatest dangers, more than the addiction in itself. Don't condemn yourself as worthless. You are precious to Jesus even after the fall.

Aspect 9: Are you close to Mother Mary? She was just a human being, but strongly focused on Jesus. Pray three Hail Mary's before you sleep, with the following prayer in between, “O Mary conceived without original sin, make my body pure and my soul holy”.

Follow these nine aspects so to say fanatically for those magical 21 days. But 'caveat'-stay away from drugs, alcohol and porn peer groups.

Please see other Bible Readings which are very helpful when one feels the urge for Porn:

he media influences the way we look at everything. They project messages, both subtle and not-so-subtle, Twith sounds, symbols, allegories and metaphors which

at times lead our society toward a materialistic, self-centred and violence-prone lifestyle. These are often in stark contrast to and even challenge our Christian values. But had it not been for the media, we would be living in an information vacuum. So between the devil and the deep sea, where do we Christians find ourselves safe? It is therefore imperative to understand this important vehicle of communication in the light of our Christian faith. The Church, in her pastoral care of the faithful, has not been isolated from the importance and relevance of the media in all its forms. Her understanding and use of mass media has been well-defined, enabling those in pastoral care to exploit the benefits of this high-impact vehicle of communication. Media: Shining Light on Gospel ValuesThe media has largely conquered time and space, making communication between people direct and instantaneous. The Church today is beginning to slowly exploit the power of the media in an effort to spread the values of the kingdom of God. Mass media generates a culture of its own. The question is how does the Church engage this culture, in a way that allows the power of the Gospel to do its work? How is the face of our saviour Jesus to appear in this world of a billion images? We must not forget that if the face of Jesus is not seen, then all the images are finally empty. They appear to substitute for life but do not lead to the fullness of life. The Pontifical Council for Social Communications takes up a vital aspect of that large question and looks at how the Gospel might be proclaimed in the vast and complex world of social communications using “mass media”. This holds greater relevance today than ever before, especially with the rise of digital culture.

Man: Steward of God's Creation:Human beings have invented and reinvent the media, using the gifts of God's creation. We know that God is the creator of “all things visible and invisible.” Among God's more recent gifts are

advanced communication systems involving satellites, cellular phones and computer devices. These gifts make new communication experiences possible; from interactive “virtual reality” and video games, to “smart” homes, video-chats, on-line shopping and financial transactions and high speed data transmission around the globe. These technologies have brought people closer enabling communication at a speed never thought of before. We often take for granted these technologies that have made our lives convenient and comfortable, but we must not forget

Mass media and the ChurchMass media and the Churchthat they are primarily God's creation. Media are powerful forces, but we must be good stewards here. The importance of exercising stewardship in the use of mass media means educating ourselves and others about their power and their limitations and making wise use of them. We are the stewards of God's creation and God in giving us stewardship over creation, demands accountability and justice. As communication attempts to establish power and control over people's lives, we must not be tempted to yield to the baser instincts of greed, conflict and domination. We must be wise in using various modern day gadgets of communication not for selfish purposes, lest we be called to give account of how we have used these devices, but for purposes that edify and uplift mankind from every wretched situation.

The Church as Advocate for Responsible Media In the Conciliar Decree Inter Mirifica (December 4, 1963) on the approval of the new statutes and change to Pontifical Commission for Cinema, Radio and Television, Vatican Council II recognised the power of the media to influence the whole of human society and reinstated the need to immediately train priests, religious and laity, rendering them competent in these newer media vehicles to be used for the apostolate with the objective of both human and moral formation of the Christian faithful. As Christians we cannot afford to support market-structured media, which reinforces a limited world view and provides enormous profit to a privileged few. Instead, we must advocate for open media channels with a genuine free flow of communication to enhance and broaden public discourse. Some conservative mindsets might argue as to why should the churches be concerned with mass media? We can take our cue from the Gospels. In them we see a Jesus who uses parables to explain God's purpose for the world. These stories are free from religious jargon, and use popular themes and the symbols of an agrarian society to give a picture of the Kingdom of God. And in telling these stories Jesus takes theological debate out of the Temple and into the streets and lanes, defying the authority of the religious elite. St Paul too was a champion of the media. Travelling widely, spreading the message of the kingdom of God, he followed it up with letters, which served for strong messaging and high recall value. Had it not been for those letters then, we would not be blessed 2000 years later to

Mass Media – Ignorance is not bliss

edia can be described as a tool of mass communication. Media has different forms Mlike Print (Newspapers, Magazines, etc.),

Radio, Television, Films, Internet and even outdoor Hoardings. The different forms of Media are important part of our daily life as it keeps us in touch with what is happening in different parts of our city, the country and the entire world. Media can be used for information as well as entertainment. It can also be used to create awareness about critical issues and generate support for/against it. It also gives us knowledge on various topics that we know little about. But since all forms of mass media are expensive, they need money to not only sustain them but also to make profits for their owners. This money is pumped in by large business houses who in return get their product advertisements to be carried along with the content. It is here exactly that all misuse and abuse of these media takes place.Today, all forms of media are corrupted by the money that comes from advertisements and seem to have sold their soul to “profit making”. Because of this, we see a deluge of advertisements in all forms of media with such brazenness and indecencies that it makes us shiver. According to a recent research, each day an average person sees more than 200 advertisements. The results of which distort our bodies, our mind and spirits. The central theme of most advertisements is “Buy, Buy, Buy”. They generally portray a life style which is anti-religious and promotes

consumerism. Some ads tell people who to be and how to be it. According to them, girls should be tall, skinny, fair, pretty, and perfect. Young women don't realize that it's an illusion. No wonder our perception of beauty is distorted. Anorexia, Bulimia and Depression are only some of the consequences of attempting this illusion. For this we can squarely blame the manufacturers, their ad campaigns of beauty products and to some extent also ourselves. The use of steroids to develop muscles and abs are destroying the health of so many young boys eager to measure up to the image of their heroes shown daily in the media. The incidences of young boys and girls resorting to robbing and stealing to make money to splurge on these products are increasing every day. Even the adults are not spared by the negative images and stories that are flashed in the media every day. Stories of people getting rich by any methods, lifestyle of the rich and famous, high society scandals, all these are enough to drive anyone to desperation. The moral implications of these images/stories are not taken into consideration as long as the money received from the advertisers is good. Inspite of having a regulatory body which has been given the job of controlling and monitoring them, they seem to find other ways to advertise them. A classic example of this is cigarette and alcohol commercials, which are disguised as awards or as mineral water ads. In addition to this, the impact of film stars and cricketers endorsing such substances definitely leads to the youngsters getting

influenced by them. Not only the advertisement but even the programmes aired are equally to be blamed for the decay in social institutions. Every second serial on air has the theme of extra-marital affairs/pre-marital affairs, violence and hedonistic lifestyles. The portrayal of women in these serials is pathetic and degenerating to say the least. Even the news channels regularly resort to over hyping or fabricating news item to generate TRP's. The hundred's of TV shopping ads which sell lucky amulets, numerological and miracle cures, which are endorsed by celebrities is also responsible for taking advantage of gullible people, who buy these products in the hope of changing their financial or health conditions.

Even journalism has not escaped this corruption. Apart from the slant, shrillness and sensationalism that it indulges in, there is also the blurring of news and opinion on a large scale. Besides this, the “Paid News” scandal which broke out recently, has shown that from being a pillar of society, the media is now leaning on the crutches of the highest bidder. Sections of the media are now for “sale”. For a price, you can buy news on the front page or at prime time. Today a reporter seems to get paid both for publishing a story as well as for not publishing or suppressing a story; it pays both ways.

Besides these, the world of Internet, films and radio has its own set of challenges and dynamics which are too vast to be dealt with in this article. Inspite of all this, mass media has its place in our lives but how large a role it plays depends on us. Will it be purely entertainment or a main source of information for our life choices? We must take the responsibility in deciding what we and our children watch or read. Moreover we must be aware of the influence of media in our lives and be wise enough to reap the benefits but at the same time not be entrapped by its falsity. We must also educate our children and the youth not to believe in everything that the media portrays at face value but exercise caution so as not to be lured away by the glitter of vested interests.

The Prayer of the Church

ey! What prayers do you recite on Tuesdays after the mass?H

It's the liturgy of the hours or in other words it is known as Divine Office, Canonical Hours, and Breviary. To our understanding after the Vatican II it is popularly known as “The Official Prayer of the Church”.Why the Prayer of the Church, when we already have Eucharist, family prayers, charismatic prayers, novenas, night vigils and so on?Liturgy of the Hours is the liturgy celebrated at different fixed hours of the day to sanctify time. It has its base in the invitation of the Lord “You must pray at all times”. (Lk 18:1) The Church recalls the Paschal Mystery in the celebration of Sacraments. It consecrates to God the whole cycle of the day and the night -to ponder on the law of the Lord unceasingly.HISTORY: It started with the recitation of the “Our Father”. Later on the hours were well organized with the inclusion of hymns, antiphons, psalms, scripture reading, canticles, intercession, prayers, office of the readings from the Saints/Fathers of the Church and the scripture. The Liturgy of the Hours later became a prayer of the monks and religious. The Second Vatican council rediscovered

the value of this prayer form and reorganized it as the Prayer of the Church.BIBLICAL BACKGROUND:The prayer of the Church has its command in the words of the Lord to pray ceaselessly. But it has its influence from the Jewish hours of prayers too. Let us look at evidences of the biblical background to this form of prayer:1) Jewish background – Jesus and his Apostles were

Jews, they prayed in Jewish style – morning and evening as mentioned in Dan 6:10-11; Judith 9:1; 12: 5-6; Deut. 6:4-9 “…when you lie down and when you rise”. Noon time was later added as seen in Ps 55: 16-17. During the time of Jesus, there were three hours of prayers. Besides these hours, some pious Jews also prayed at other times and reflected on the law and psalms (esp. Ps 119 which has 176 verses).

2) Jesus' praying pattern – The Gospels testify that Jesus was a 'Man of Prayer'. Jesus recited the Jewish grace before meals (Mt 14:19; Mt 26:26). The very life of Jesus echoes the aspect of prayer or deep communion with the Father at all times. He prayed before electing his twelve apostles (Lk 6:12), He spent time alone on the hills to pray(Mt.14:23), He was transfigured while at prayer (Lk 9:28), He prayed at the multiplication of the loaves (Mt 14:19), before or after performing any healing, cure and miracles (Jn11:41; Jn17:1). He insisted that his disciples must watch and pray. Admiring His life of prayer, the disciples asked Him to teach them to pray (Lk 11:1) and so He taught them the 'Our Father'.(Mk 14:38)

3) The Apostolic Community in Prayer – The Apostles and the early Christians prayed. Peter and John went into the temple for praying (Acts 3: 1-2). Acts 12: 5 and 12 mentions the community gathered

in prayer at night while Peter was in prison. Paul and Silas prayed and sang at midnight (Act 16:25). Paul exhorts the Christian community to make their entire life a prayer – praying ceaselessly at all times (Rom 12:12, Col 4:2, Eph 6:18, 1Thes 5:17). It has two fold dimensions – praying as a community (being of one heart and one mind) and praying ceaselessly (at all times).

SCHOOL OF PRAYER:The Prayer of the Church is classified as follows:Morning Prayer, Office of the readings, Mid day Prayer, Evening Prayer, Night prayer It has four weeks Psalter where in the Psalms are divided according to the time and context. It is prayed not only on Tuesdays but every day. In our parish, we pray this prayer along with the people of God on Tuesdays. The use of Psalms has become a great source of inspiration for our meditation and contemplation. The early Fathers of the Church considered the entire Psalter as the prophecies fulfilled in Jesus (Ps 22, 41, 69). They heard in the Psalms, the voice of Christ or the Father speaking to him. St. Paul says, “Sing Psalms and hymns to God”. Psalms are the voice of the church (of suffering and

of hope).St. Augustine has lots of Psalms interpreted Christological. It is he who made the Psalms, the prayers of the church. The Apostolic constitution Laudis Canticum of Pope Paul VI, points out that the Prayer of the Church, presided over by the bishop with his priests and the entire people of God is the highest form

of Divine worship embraced in the Eucharist and extended to every hour of human life.In the Prayer of the Church, the Psalter basically speaks of human realities, the search for God and the experience of human situation. It speaks of our spiritual life and how to heal our soul by resisting temptations of the world (St. Athanasius). The psalms speak of our human identity, struggles, and hopes. It sincerely expresses the human mind and heart.Since the Prayer of the Church is biblical, ecclesial, patristic and includes all forms of prayer –praise and thanksgiving, singing and chanting, reflection on God's Word and silence, petitions and intercession, hence it is a school of prayer that helps us to learn to pray by “praying”.The Prayer of the Church calls every individual to pray with the mind and heart. When the church is full and prayerful, the joy is great. Community celebration of the liturgy of the hours encourages one another to realize one's vocation and mission in the Church. Blessed Pope John Paul II's, dream was that all the faithful derive a source of inspiration from the Prayer of the Church. It's a call within a Call, for us to rediscover the spiritual treasures of the Church. When we pray the Prayer of the Church, we open ourselves to the reality of human existence. This indeed helps us to reflect meditatively and contemplatively, the very essence of one's existence and relationship with the HOLY TRINITY (Father, Son & Holy Spirit). And every moment it fosters a deeper relationship with God and human beings in the spirit of Prayer, Love and Communion.

The special season before Easter is called “Lent.” In the English language, this word is derived from “lengthening” of daylight hours as we progress from the darkness of winter to the new light of spring. But other languages, such as Spanish, has a name for this season that is derived from the word for 'forty' - the season of forty days.

During this season, we do penance for forty days because Jesus fasted forty days in the wilderness. But did you ever wonder why he was out there for forty days and not seven or ten or fifty? Let us go back to the Old Testament. Noah & company in the Ark watched rainfall for 40 days. Moses was on Mt. Sinai for forty days receiving the Ten Commandments. The Israelites wandered around the desert for forty years. All these “forties” are a necessary and not-so-comfortable prelude for something new. In Noah's case, it is the cleansing of a sinful world by raging flood waters. In Moses' case, it was the birth of the people of the covenant. For the nomadic Israelites, it was the journey before they could settle in the Promised Land. And for Jesus? What did his forty days mean? The birth of a new Israel liberated from sin, reconciled to God, and governed by the law of the Spirit rather than a law chiseled in stone and the mark of a New Covenant.

But think back to the story of Moses and the Israelites. There was someone who did not want them to go out into the desert to offer sacrifice to their God. Pharaoh did not take the loss of his cheap labor lying down. When Jesus begins his mission of liberation, there is another slave master who is no more willing than Pharoah to let his minions go without a fight.

The temptations of Jesus in the desert show us the tactics of Satan. Bread, a symbol for all that sustains our physical life, is a great blessing. But Satan tries to make material things the ultimate, distracting us from a deeper hunger

and a more enduring food. Political power and all leadership is intended by God for the sake of serving the common good; Satan twists things to make leaders self-seeking, oppressive tyrants like himself. The lust for power and fame ironically leads not to dominion but to slavery to the Dark creature. Then there's religious temptation, the trickiest of them all – manipulating God for our own glory, using his gifts to make people look at us rather than at Him, running here and there for the Healing Service rather than running to the Healer -

sounds a lot like the Pharisees.

Jesus triumphs in this first wrestling match. He shows us how to keep from being pinned. Fasting breaks undue attachments to material blessings and stimulates our spiritual appetite. Humble service breaks the stranglehold of pride. Reverent worship with genuine faith breaks the bonds of superstition, magic, and all arrogant religion. And the Word of God is shown as the sword of the Spirit, the secret weapon that slashes through the enemy's lies.

So what about our forty days? Times to use the tactics modeled by our Captain and breakall strongholds of evil through prayer,

fasting, humble service AND most importantly the heavenly bread of the Eucharist and the Word of God. If we make use of them diligently during this season, we can enter into greater freedom. Darkness can give way to increasing light. Something new and wonderful can be born in us.

Make this lenten season something new and wonderful

e find celebrations in the lives of most Christians either low key or absent during the feast of Easter. This may partially be due to the Wfact that there may be left over emotions

gathered during the earlier church services held on Good Friday or generally due to a sharp decline in the extent to which such feasts are celebrated today. Proper insights with regard to the truth and meaning of Easter however would certainly help revive its true spirit of joy.

Today widely accepted and popular teachings on

personality development the world over speak about the need for bringing about 'change' in our lives. That those who resist change will stop growing, their lives become dull and uninteresting and will therefore become unhappy. That on the other hand, those who try to bring about change in their lives and succeed, will find themselves facing new and interesting challenges… a life where knowledge increases, where dazzling possibilities abound, all of which would lead to happiness.

If one would try to find out how and where these programmes derive their inspiration from, one would in all probability be led to teachings on the “Resurrection of Christ” as found in the Bible (Matt 28:1-10). Teachings which tell us about how when two simple people (the two Mary's), were on their way to inspect the tomb of the crucified Jesus, were pleasantly surprised to find the remains of His body missing, and that this was in fact a change brought about by Jesus in His own life. One which is probably the greatest change any life has seen - one where He resurrects in glory from death to life. This stunning fact is sure to generate more excitement

when we realize that we are able to experience a 'Jesus like resurrection” in our own lives. This is what St. Paul has to say in Rom 6:3,11… 'Are you not aware that we who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into His death? So that just as Christ was raised from the dead, we

too might have this New Life.'

It follows then, that everytime we believe in The Resurrection we

keep ourselves open and liable to change. And the time when we believe in the resurrection are those moments when we perform simple Christ like actions. Actions which find us feeding the hungry, forgiving our enemy, touching the lives of the forsaken, reaching out to those in our own homes or going to work with joy. We must strive to live the resurrection joy in our simple daily lives.

With Easter a few days away let there be a resolve to change, and may you experience the peace and joy of the Risen Christ abundantly.

Save your child from the snares of mass mediasthe 21 century saw information technology and

mass media progressing by leaps and bounds. Various means of communication have reached T

millions of people who can access information on entertainment, sports, G.K., political updates etc. Indeed, the Mass Media has a powerful impact on the minds of the young and old.

Of all the various means of mass media communication, the T.V. and Internet, being in the visual form, leaves a deep impact on the minds of children and adolescents and therefore has more lasting effect.T.V. viewing is a major time consuming activity which

influences children and adolescents. While it can be a source of entertainment and information , it may influence them in undesirable ways. Excess T.V. watching takes away precious time that can be used for reading, school work, playing and family and social interaction. Violence, sexual overtures, race and gender stereotypes, drug and alcohol abuse are the common themes of T.V. programmes. A young child's mind is impressionable and may assume that what they see on T.V. is typically safe and acceptable.Studies have shown that children who watch a lot of T.V. are likely to:

· Have lower grades in school· Read fewer books· Exercise less and be overweight

HOW CAN PARENTS HELP?Active parenting ensures children to have a positive experience with T.V. viewing. Parents can help by:

· Viewing programmes with your children

· Selecting developmentally appropriate programmes (age- appropriate)

· Keeping time limits- per day, per week· Turning off the T.V. during family meals and

study time· Restricting programs that you feel are

inappropriate for your childIn addition, encourage discussions about good programmes and point out positive behavior such as cooperation, friendship and concern for others. Relate such behaviors with that of your personal and family values. Talk about the realistic consequences of violence.

With proper parental guidance children can learn to use TV in a healthy and positive way.

Similarly, Internet has made a rapid spread of knowledge possible, whereby one can access any information at the press of a button. But, the internet also has its demerits like exaggerating scandalous and unhealthy issues such as violence and pornography.

Almost everyday we read a news about children trapped through communication with strangers on the internet and their safety is compromised. Because of this threat many parents have installed “child monitoring software” on their computer. But some parents and most adolescents feel this could be an invasion of the child's privacy. Leading psychologists have denounced it and affirmed that it is not an invasion on privacy as long as parents follow two important conditions:

1. Clearly define the rules you expect your child to follow while on the net

2. Communicate beforehand that their activity will be monitored from time to time.

Dr. David Walsh, a leading psychologist and President of the National Institute on Media and Family said “parents have a responsibility to monitor the whereabouts of their kids, whether it is in the real world or the cyber world”.HOW CAN PARENTS HELP?There are so many areas on the internet where a child can

meander, many times by accident and thus be exposed to violent or vulgar graphics, texts or video imagery. Hence, it is very important for parents to learn how to monitor their child's internet activity in order to keep them safe. This can be done by keeping:-

ü Computer in the family room:- One easy way to monitor the activity is to place the computer in the family room where usage can be observed by any family members entering the room

ü Tab on internet history:- you can use this tab to reveal the websites that your child has visited. The downside of this is that history can be cleared or erased and even children can figure out how to clear it.

ü Online child monitoring software:- The best way on how to monitor your child's internet activity is by simply downloading a child monitoring software. The software acts invisibly and tracks all the activity that goes on, and helps the parent to see if any disturbing areas of the internet have been visited by the child.

Parents who are open and honest about their intention to monitor their kid's computer activity can offset some of the potential dangers lurking online. When a child knows

that their parents can read any online exchange, then the temptation to engage in sexually explicit conversations, posting pictures or exchanging personal information may be lessened.Lastly, as Christian parents, we can turn to the Bible to guide our children. The Scriptures encourage us to guard our thinking. Certainly our ears are not the only gateway to our minds. It is equally crucial that we guard our eyes. Jesus taught this importance in Matt 6:22-23, ”The eye is the lamp of the body. If your eyes are healthy, your whole body will be full of light. But if your eyes are unhealthy, your whole body will b full of darkness. If then the light within you is darkness, how great is that darkness!”………

th Jan.25 Small Christian Community Day The Small Christian Community (SCC) Animators' Feast mass was celebrated by Fr. Ivan along with Deacon Ivo. He

highlighted that the Animators should groom themselves with the following three features (viz.) Prayer, Concern and Training. Animators should be people of prayer so that they are in close association with Our Lord. They should be concerned with the happenings in the communities and be sensitive to their members' spiritual and other needs. They should attend training as and when they get the opportunity so that they are in tune with the latest developments of the Church and Parish. The mass was followed by a get-together in the community hall, where Mr. Clifford Faria welcomed all the animators. The programme commenced with an opening prayer by Ms. Noreen and a presentation on the various communities and the happenings in the parish, and cake cutting by Fr. Ivan. Mr. Johnson Saldanha, the Ex Parish Coordinator was felicitated for his valuable contribution to the Parish and SCC, along with Mrs. Tessie and Mrs. Doris the former Area Coordinators.

This graceful evening filled with a lot of excitement, feeling of togetherness, and prizes to the winners came to an end with a short prayer followed by a dance, and a wonderful and appetizing dinner. uman life is divided into five main stages namely infancy, childhood, adolescence, H

adulthood and old age. In each of these stages an individual has to find himself in different situations and face different problems. The old age is not without problems. In old age physical strength deteriorates, mental stability diminishes; money power becomes bleak coupled with negligence from the younger generation.Although the President of India has given her assent to the Maintenance and Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizens Act which punishes children who abandon parents with a prison term of three months or a fine, still the situation is grim for elderly people in India.

After a certain age health problems begin to crop up which leads to losing control over one's body, even not recognizing one's own family owing to Alzheimer, are common in old age. It is then children begin to see their parents as burden. It is these parents who at times wander out of their homes or are thrown out. Some dump their old parents or grand-parents in old-age homes and don't even go to visit them anymore.

Parents cannot be evicted from a house without due process of law if they have

been staying there from before. There are few enactments that can be

applied. But do we always need laws against the ones whom we

gave birth, taught them to walk-talk and for whom we devoted our whole life so that they get a stable future? Here are some considerations, from my perspective, which will go a long way in strengthening relationships:

Do not expect old people to be different from any other age:Some old people can become

v e r y childish; but, young people are also very childish. People do not change much by getting old. A stubborn young person becomes a cantankerous old one. A life-time of evil character does not suddenly become sweet and innocent with age. People can change at any age, if they want to; but they don't automatically change for the better just because they grow old. Just because a person lived long, don't expect to find a saint or a perfect person. Accept people, even old ones, as they are.

Give honor and respect to those who are old.Everyone in existence deserves honor and respect. Make it a practice not to despise any of God's creatures, no matter how small or deformed or worn out they are. An old person who is incontinent does not deserve any less respect than a baby who is not yet potty trained. We need to show respect for those who have lived long on the face of this earth. If we do, when we get in that condition, people will be more likely to show respect for us.

Tidings (Vol.2.4) - 40-March-2012

Learn to love old people.Anyone can love the young and beautiful, particularly when the hormones flow. Young love does exist but it is often confused with passion. To love an older person is closer to true love. Of course, it is a pleasure to deal with an old person who is sweet, lovely, intelligent and self-sufficient. Anyone can do that. It takes real character to love those who don't love us and especially to love those who aren't lovable. So, if the person you are dealing with is an impossible old man or old woman, rise to the occasion and be challenged to treat them especially well.

Be careful about correcting an old person's opinion. The old person may be wrong; but again, you too may be wrong. He/She has lived a long time & his/her opinion is worth the consideration of age. Use prudence and loving judgement before correcting the older person's opinion. Try never to use demeaning hurtful words.

Visit the old people.Take time to visit old people you know, whether you are related to them or not, continuing this trend will assure that when you are old you have someone to visit you. The Bible very clearly tells us, “Honor your Father and Mother” (old people)., which is the first commandment with promises, that “it may be well with you and you may live long on the earth.” This principle of honor is the major way of dealing with our senior citizens – because it is the best way of dealing with older people.

Finally,Treat old people just like you want to be treated when you get old.The third generation will do to the second generation what the second generation did to the first. If you want to perpetuate cruelty to the second and third generation then treat your old folks cruelly. Your children will treat you like you treated your parents and on and on it goes. This circle must be broken to ensure God's healing touch rejuvenates the generations to come. Likewise if you perpetuate kindness – your future will be safe and secure, after all we are destined to grow old and remain old to the end.

he enthusiasm of the youth and generosity to do great things, gave a boost to organise many activities in the Tlast three months. Their active participation made all

events joyful and colourful. Along with the many activities and enriching spiritual life, the formation of NYGs is also at the forefront.

From the month of December onwards many programmes and activities have taken place. The Youth hosted the entire program for the Parish Feast and also presented a wonderful dance performance. The Youth also prepared the liturgy for the Infant Jesus Feast novenas and feast day. The four-day long Christmas carnival and the street children program brought forth the generous service and wholehearted participation from all the youth which was much appreciated by all. The Carmelite Brothers and the youth collaborated in preparing the crib and the star, which was indeed done creatively focusing on the theme, 'Save the girl child'.

th thOn 29 and 30 December, we had 'Christmas Khuxalkay' - carol singing and dance competition for our Parishioners organized by the Youth. There was a good response for both the competitions. For carol singing, Our Lady of Rosary Community won the first prize and Maria Goretti Community won the second prize. The consolation prizes were given to St. Blaise Community and Our Lady of Lourdes Community. In the dance competition Mount Mary Community bagged the first place and Our Lady of Rosary Community the second place. Ankur children's home and Our Lady of Snow Community won the consolation prizes.

On New Year's Eve, the Parish Youth organized the New Year Blast after the night mass. All who attended enjoyed it with full gusto as they welcomed the New Year 2012. It was a great fun event well-organized and appreciated by everyone.

thOn 26 January a few youth from our parish participated in 'The Word of God' seminar, held at DYC Bandra.

thOn 29 January we celebrated Youth Day of our Parish. More than 350 youngsters of our Parish came together from various communities. It was really awesome! The day saw a lot of teamwork, participation and camaraderie among the youth. We had a great time as there were Live performances, Sharing, Prayer, Games, Spot prizes and Jam session. The Youth even extended their hands in preparing the food.

The enthusiastic colorfulness that we experienced during the past three months - knowing each other, bonding, sharing, learning has enlightened us. The active participation in the liturgy and Church programs has enhanced the holistic development of all those involved.

Thanks to all the support, love, and concern that we received from the Parish Fathers and Brothers during these few months in order to make things happen silently but colorfully.

May My Choice Prevail

In the early days when a mother asked her son, 'Son, what is it that is everywhere?' and the child used to reply, 'Mother, God is everywhere……’

…Since those times science advanced to a stage where the only thing permanent was change….Students in school gained knowledge and learnt all kinds of new things. Now the answer to the very same question posed by the mother was ‘Air’.

Gone are the days of the birth of discoveries and inventions, now we are in an age where everything can be sold to anyone who can purchase. Today media is like a nail that drills through different blocks of wood to make a perfect product.

Talking about nails, some may be used to make a love cradle for a baby and some may be used for let's say nailing Jesus on a cross.

Media is merely a tool to suit our purposes. The way we use it categorize it as good or bad.

Today age does not define how young you are….your youth can be calculated on how young and youthful you feel. All of these young people are always connected through media.

The latest surprise statement these days is 'Hey my mom is on facebook'. But that's not all there is to media. Media is a weapon consisting many mediums from an FM radio to cinema multiplexes. Everything is medium, some of which we may carry in our hands as we walk from dawn to dusk.

We are the youth, our hearts are young, sometimes we take a decision on impulse. It is our choice that determines the future of media….

We were created in the likeness of God and we are sent forth to tame, cultivate and harness all the good from His creation, until the time came when we created materials and goods out of his creation.

The Media as we see today is one of Man's biggest and complex creations….to which we are now exposed and the radiations that it emits are neutral until we make a distinction between good and bad.

We are living in such an age where everything is so rapid. For us

both time and money is precious. But mass media is surely a

hot topic on which we can have a discussion. 'Mass media' –

when you come across this word, what instantly comes to mind

are newspapers, television, radio, internet, mobiles, etc. The

list does not end here. Media is a vast field and consists of

various elements. As you all know, media does have a

tremendous influence on society.

We can use mass media to spread the message of our Lord Jesus

Christ to many people who don't know about our faith. Media

is the best medium of communication to get our message

across the masses. The Church can surely use the media in it's

best possible way so that the laity are enriched in their faith, and

also our non-catholic brethren may know more about our

religion.

The written form through which the Catholic faith can be

made known is 'the Bible' – Holy Book for Christians, and

other various books, pamphlets, articles on different topics and

issues related to Christianity. The literate section of the society

will read it , whereas, through sermons (which is in oral form)

people get better understanding. The powerful impact of

media is that people tend to believe what they see. The

animated version of the various stories from the Bible, the

movie –'the Passion of Christ' has been watched by all.

Children understand better through animation what our Lord

Jesus did for us. Take for example, Our Church, which has

installed the LCD's displays the hymns which helps the

congregation to actively participate in the Liturgical

celebration. The powerpoint presentations shown during the

sermons / homily are also helpful as the people are able to grasp

the message more effectively. Thus mass media is such a strong

medium and it has various sources through which the message

can be made known to the people.

Just like the positive side of media, there is bound to be a

negative side also. Through the medium of internet (particular

Media – A powerful tool

websites), magazines, books, films tend to take

children, youngsters and even adults astray. Topics

related to sex, violence, hatred for God, false

interpretations of the Bible and Christainity can

weaken the strong and deep-rooted faith that people

have in the teachings of Christ and the Church. The

negativity cannot influence us; if we have proper

knowledge as to how to differentiate between the

good and bad things of this world.

Mass media, today acts as an agent to the society. It is

that means of communication where the people

interact, know, learn a lot new things and also come together

for a particular cause (social, political, cultural, etc). But the

Church views it as “instruments” through which it can convey

its teachings and messages to the Christians. Any change in the

system of communication does have an impact on the society

and culture. Hence, we should in our own small way do

something for the betterment of society and contribute to

make this world a better place to live in.

th Time 8.10a.m., Sunday 26 Feb 2012. Just like any other Sunday morning, children entered the campus of Holy Cross Convent School for Sunday school. Some were happy and some sleepily moving towards their classrooms as they usually do passing by the Basket ball court. What happened next was an amazing stunt for 6 minutes. Let me explain. As the students began to walk towards their classrooms the beautiful song 'Aye Khuda' was played and a teacher suddenly started a contemporary dance. Within a minute the tempo changed to Rock and Roll with lyrics: 'Jesus came to save my soul'. The already surprised children were again taken aback when more teachers & youth joined in the dance. By now an excited crowd, formed a circle around the basket ball court. It was no longer a surprise but a treat as the children cheered teachers who kept entering the court to dance to this scintillating music. The mob of teachers dancing was such that by the end of the song it looked like most teachers were on the floor. There was a loud cheer when Fr. Arwin, Br. Cannio and Br. Daniel joined the mob to dance.

This Flash Mob definitely made the day of the children. It had amazing moments within the choreography when a human Cross was formed and when the whole mob looked upwards towards the heavens with raised hands to acknowledge Jesus Christ in their lives. Goosebumps were felt by the children and the parents around. As the music stopped, the dancers dispersed among the crowd just like nothing happened. Sunday School finally returned to normalcy but of course with pumped up children. This Flash Mob was with a meaning for this Lent to show how Jesus is always there in our joys & sorrows. Jesus is always present to help us but are we ready to acknowledge it???

Carmelites in the churchCarmelites in the church

Know this...

In the Church, we have 'Religious Orders' and 'Religious Congregations'. What distinguished Religious Orders from the Religious Congregations were the vows professed by its members. While the members of the Religious Order took solemn vows, others took simple vows. Solemn vows were originally considered indissoluble. So, the code of Canon Law 1917 reserved the name Religious Order for institutes in which the vows were solemn, and used the term Congregation for institutes with simple vows. In the stricter sense, incase of men, members of the Order were called 'Regulars', and the Congregation, 'Religious'. For women, those with simple vows were called 'Sisters', while the term 'Nun' was reserved for women with solemn vows.

In practice, even before 1917, dispensations from solemn religious vows were being obtained by grant of the Pope himself, while papal departmentsand superiors, specially delegated by him, could dispense men and women from simple religious vows.

After 1917, many institutes with simple vows appealed to the Holy See (Holy Chair) for permission to make solemn vows. This aborted the distinction between Order and Congregation.

The current Code of Canon Law, which came into force in 1983, maintains the distinction

between solemn and simple vows, but no longer makes any distinction between their

juridical effects, including the distinction between 'Orders' and "Congregations".

Carmelites have been serving in Mira Road since 1988. They were entrusted with the administration of the Mumbai Archdiocese between 1720-1853 during which they served the diocese as bishops and diocesan administrators. Many, perhaps, are interested to know the history of the Carmelite order and their mission in the Church. Through this article, which will run through several issues of Tidings, we wish to throw light on the origin and life of Carmelites in the Church. It is interesting to note that the origin of Carmelites cannot be pointed to one single founder, analogous to

other Orders or congregations which have a particular founder/s. For example: the Benedictine order was founded by St.

Benedict, Jesuits was founded by St. Ignatius

Loyola, the Congregation of the Holy Cross sisters, who serve in our church, was founded by Fr. Theodosious Florentini.

Let us now see, how the Carmelite order came into existence in the Church:

The word 'Carmelite' is originally

referred to the dwellers on Mount Carmel in present day Israel, without any religious connotation. The word 'Carmel' stands for vineyard or orchard. Geographically, Carmel is not a single mountain,

but a whole range of mountains that runs for about 16 miles. CRUSADERS: 'Crusade' was a holy war against the Muslim rule who occupied the Holy land. The Muslim presence in the Holy land began with the initial Muslim conquest of Israel in the 7th Century. These holy places are significant for Christians because of the birth, ministry, crucifixion and the resurrection of Jesus.

Muslims believe that prophet Mohammed ascended into heaven from Jerusalem and hence, consider Jerusalem as the third most sacred site in Islam. When Muslims captured the Holy land and Gaul (France), many Christians were deeply hurt. Moreover, when they forbade the Christians from entering the Holy Land, many opted to wage a war against them to protect the Holy Land. Pope Alexander II, in 1063, gave his consent for the same. There were many crusades or wars against Muslims during which many Christians, Muslims and even Jews lost their lives. Among those who travelled to the Holy Land to fight, many were thrilled to see the sites mentioned in the Bible and some chose to remain there permanently. Those knights (crusaders), tired of slaughter, wanted to live in peace and prayer instead of violence. They chose the caves of a valley in the Carmel range as their place of refuge. This was the beginning of a new Order in the Church. Perhaps those knights, then, never thought that they were beginning a new history in the church, their way of life would soon attract many and produce thousands of saints.THE ALBERTINE RULE:The crusaders who stayed in individual cells on the Carmel mountain slope, eventually, agreed to come together as a community and requested St. Albert, the

then patriarch of Jerusalem, for a written formula to regulate and sanction their way of life. Around 1209, he gave the rule and called it(rule) as the 'formula for living'. This 'Rule' or 'Formula

for Living' was approved by

Pope Honorius III in 1226.

ELIANIC TRADITION:

Mount Carmel reminds us of one of the well-known prophets of the Old Testament, Prophet Elijah. Prophet Elijah who was considered as the precursor of monasticism by several Fathers of the Church, now, began to be considered as the actual founder of the Carmelites. Some even believed that there was unbroken succession of Holy men right from the times of Elijah and Elisha, into the thirteenth century. In this way, the Elianic traditions grew into a grand historiography without a sufficient documentary basis. Today, by papal permission, a statue of St. Elijah is set up in St. Peter's, Rome, among the founders of Religious Orders. Pope

Benedict XIII, himself, is

said to have written the inscription for that statue

calling St. Elijah as the founder of

t h e Carmelites.

However, today there is a paradigm shift, with Carmelites looking upon St. Elijah as an inspiration and model rather than as their literal founder.MARIAN TRADITION:Albertine Rule required the hermit brothers to have an oratory in the midst of their cells where members could assemble for the Eucharist. The hermits dedicated their chapel to the honour of Mother Mary as they felt that the very purpose for which the order was established was to honour our Lady. Pope Clement V states that the Order was divinely instituted in honour of the glorious and blessed Virgin Mary. Since, the oratory was in honour of Mary, people began to call them 'Hermit brothers of Mount Carmel. Pope Innocent IV called them the

Know this...

Historians say that right from the time of Prophet Samuel, there was a body of men called 'Sons of the Prophets'. They, in many respects, resembled the religious institutions of the present Catholic Church. They had a community life, and dedicated their lives to God, yet did not belong to the Tribes of Levi. They too, like present day religious, owed obedience to certain superiors, the most famous of whom were Elijah whom Carmelites consider their founder. However, with the downfall of the Kingdom of Israel, the 'Sons of the Prophets' disappeared from history. Hence, many historians do not accept any kind of uninterrupted connection from

Prophet Elijah to the thirteenth century Carmelite hermits.

'Hermit brothers of the blessed Virgin Mary of Mount Carmel'. Thus, Carmelites got the privilege of calling themselves as 'Brothers of Mary'. Since 1281, Carmelites have been making their profession to God and to the Blessed Virgin Mary of Mount Carmel. A very special feature of Marian devotion is the Carmelite Scapular.CARMELITES IN EUROPE:As time passed by and the crusading armies began to lose ground to the reconquering Saracens, the hermits on Carmel thought of returning to their countries of origin where they could live more safely. But did they receive recognition as monks of Carmelite Order in Europe? How did they survive in this new situation?... Look for answers in the next issue......

be guided into many diverse aspects that govern our lives even today.

All of us, no matter what profession we belong to, need to become alive to the need of the media apostolate. We need to focus on engaging with the media on both social and economic issues reflecting Christian values in our media stories, in our witnessing to God's call in reaching out to the poor and needy and in our efforts at educating the down-trodden and bringing about awareness on ethical and social issues. Most of our young Christians deepened in the faith and blessed with good communication abilities need to be identified and be guided to take up responsibilities in mass media that both exploit their God given talents and stand firm as ethical and moral pillars in the Church today. We need a unified policy with an implementation road-map to effect the Church's ultimate goal of evangelisation, development, proclamation and catechesis. In the words of St Paul, we must become “all to all” in order to become powerful communicators for Christ.
