Better quality MPEG-2 SD on one card (2RU and then 1RU encoders!

MPEG-2 (even HD) on a chip

MPEG-4 still a whole card

Everything now available on a chip. Performance and functionality increasing…

- Dramatic changes in technology - Huge increases in silicon densities and speeds Premium performance on a dense platform is now possible

06.06.2012 Appear TV 27

• Encodes up to 2 HD or 4 SD channels per blade - Dual HD encoder offers HDSDI with the addition of AES unbalanced audio inputs - SD encoder supports 4 services per blade and is license key upgradeable to 2 x HD - Imminent software option will provide premium video quality in exchange for a 50% reduction in density (eg. 1HD or 2SD per card) • Rate Control Modes:

– Constant Bit Rate (CBR) – Variable Bit Rate (VBR) – Capped VBR (CVBR) – Statistical Multiplexing (in future release)

• Adjustable GOP structure • External clock reference (Frame sync) • 2 encoded stereo audio pairs per video

HD/SD MPEG-2/4 Encoder with SDI/HDSDI input

Analogue input option

06.06.2012 Appear TV 28

• Significant advantages since it will handle COMPONENT video as well as composite! • Available Q4 2012

The problems with Composite

06.06.2012 Appear TV 29

1. Analog Broadcast studio, no problems since high quality rubidium or other accurate oscillator used. 2. Digital distribution to a professional IRD. This depends upon the following;

• Where the 27MHz MPEG clock comes from • This may be internally generated (poor) • Derived from PCR (locked to clock source in the encoder) – potentially better • Derived from a high stability external source (frame sync input) – best.

3. Consumer or pro-sumer set top box. Almost certainly internally generated from a low-cost crystal oscillator. Poor.

F(csc) = 4.43361875 MHz

Composite and component video

06.06.2012 Appear TV 30

With digital distribution of analogue signals, the best solution is to keep the chrominance and luminance signals separate and AVOID using composite!

06.06.2012 Appear TV 33

The NMS

06.06.2012 Appear TV 34

• Compression vendors will usually want to sell an NMS with their system • It will be their own NMS • It will be proprietary and designed to work with their equipment only • If third party equipment is supported, it will only be for limited products that are needed to make their portfolio complete • It can provide vendor lock-in and restrict the equipment choices you can make in the future!

The NMS

06.06.2012 Appear TV 35

• Appear TV takes a different approach.

• We try and build redundancy options into our chassis so that an NMS becomes optional. This can reduce system complexity and cost • When an NMS is required, we provide a choice of open NMS platforms to match any price and functionality requirement that are equipment vendor agnostic Appear TV can provide leading NMS solutions, when they are needed, using Partners who have integrated our solutions. This approach avoids vendor lock-in!

06.06.2012 Appear TV 36

Protecting the distribution network

06.06.2012 Appear TV 37

• For cable, the distribution mechanism is almost always over IP • Redundant networks, supporting video and broadband / internet services • Video services delivered efficiently via RTP over UDP multicasts • Transient network disturbances provide the biggest risk of QOS affecting issues • Typically, QOS is protected by adding SMPTE2022 FEC • Only one delivery network is used at any one time.

• FEC overheads can be significant (40% or more of total video traffic) • Still not effective in coping with long duration burst errors

Appear TV can of course provide the same solution, ….but we also have a better way……

Protecting the distribution network

06.06.2012 Appear TV 38

What if it was possible to;

• Make an edge device that monitored the traffic arriving via both the A and B networks simultaneously • Align and take IP packets from either network, seamlessly, to re-construct the output from both networks • You would have a seamless solution using both networks to provide 100% FEC without having to add SMPTE 2022 FEC at all! The new Appear TV seamless IP switch delivers all of these features!

Output card source redundancy

06.06.2012 Appear TV 46

Notice the example if for an RF modulator card. We can provide A range of analogue video modulators and FM radio modulators as well!

Other key redundancy options

06.06.2012 Appear TV 47

• You can nominate an input to act as a back-up. • For example, if an IP input fails, use the satellite input as back-up. • Or use a DTT input to back up a satellite feed etc. • This is the INPUT PORT redundancy feature. • The same concept can be used for SERVICE LEVEL redundancy where incoming transport streams are different
