First Grade Continuous Learning May 2020

Draw a picture of your favorite spot to read and study at home. Include as many details as you can. Color your picture and add labels.

NAME:

Dear Families:

This packet includes daily math and literacy activities that your student can complete offline from home.

Many of the activities will be review activities to serve as extra practice while some skills may be new to

your student. Please feel free to help your student review any pages that may be challenging.

Daily Activities:

• Reading: Every day, your student should be reading whether that be with you or independently.

Included in this packet are several texts for your student to read. The same book or text can be

read multiple times throughout the month. Students who are able can complete a reading log

capturing what they read each day.

• Snap Words (Sight Words): Included in the packet are cards with grade level SNAP words that

students should master by the end of the year. SNAP words are words that are used most

frequently in English. Your student should know these words in a SNAP - meaning they don 1 t

hesitate or try to sound these words out when they see them. Ways to !earn SNAP words:

o Visual: Have your student look at the word and talk about the shapes of the letters.

Draw a box to outline the shape of the word.

o Auditory: Spell and say the word repeatedly. Rhythm and/or singing helps commit the

spelling and the word to memory.

Kinesthetic: Write the word in the air or with different pens, markers, and paints to build

muscle memory for writing the word.

o Combine all three: Make up cheers, songs, or dances to go with the word. Play games

with the words. Hide words around the house and have your student try to find the

word. Turn off the lights and use the flashlight on your phone to point to a word and

have your student say that word. Categorize words by first letter, number of letters, easy

words, tricky words, etc. Make up your own game!

o Use the blank cards to add other fun words your student discovers!

• Writing: Blank pages are included in the packet for your student to create their own stories. This

is the perfect time to foster their creativity and imagination. Students should practice writing

fiction and non-fiction texts.

• Math: There are several math worksheets included in the packet. Once your student has

completed the worksheets, have them write their own problems for a family member to

complete. Your student can check the work to make sure all the answers are correct.

• Additional Practice: This packet also contains additional activity pages for your student to

practice basic literacy and math skills. Give your student choice and let them choose which 1-2

activities they will complete each day.

Keep learning fun and remember that each student works at their ow·n pace. If your student gets

restless or frustrated, take a brain break and revisit the activity later. Use this opportunity of working at

home to develop independence, perseverance, problem-so!ving skills, and creativity. The most

important thing is for your student to enjoy learning!
