MOST IMPORTANT LOK SABHA SECRETARIAT EDITORIAL AND TRANSLATION SERVICE ------- PARLIAMENT HOUSE ANNEXE NEW DELHI – 110001 No. 31587 Dated the 15 th April, 2019 CIRCULAR Subject: Use of Unicode Compatibile fonts (Mangal, Utsah etc.) for working in Hindi on computers in Lok Sabha Secretariat and while exchanging information with Ministries/Department of Central Government. It has been observed that the use of proprietary fonts of different standards in Lok Sabha Secretariat, which are not compatible with each other, is causing serious problems in information exchange within and outside Secretariat and need for unified font for Hindi is being felt continuously. Presently, in the Lok Sabha Secretariat, non-standardised 'Aryan' and 'Kruti Dev' fonts are being used widely by various Branches, except Reporters Branch, who are using Unicode compliant fonts. To overcome the issue of compatiability in Hindi fonts, Department of Information Technology, Government of India has accepted Unicode encoding for fonts as Indian standard. By using Unicode compliant Fonts for Hindi, the problem relating to the exchange of Hindi documents/files is completely solved, besides getting additional advantages like search facility. Unicode fonts are very convenient for Uploading/updating information on Hindi websites also as such text can be viewed on any PC since unicode fonts are in-built feature of Windows operating system. Moreover, information in these fonts can be exchanged with handheld gadgets (Mobile Phones, Tablet PCs etc.) too.

ANNEXURE

Procedure to enable use of unicode to work in hindi

on computers having Windows XP/Vista/Windows 7

Operating System

Windows XP - With Indic Languages enabled (as given in Step A)

Windows Vista Windows 7

Step A: To enable Indic Languages in Windows XP

Go to Start-> Control Panel > Regional & Language Options >Click on

Languages Tab (the following screen will appear) Tick the Check box to Install

files for complex scripts... and click OK.

2. (Following message would appear) Click OK

3. You will be required to place Windows XP CD in the CD drive to enable

Indic Language including Hindi.
