BULLDOGS BY THE NUMBERS

2RPI: MSU made program history last week with the release of the first NCAA RPI rankings of the season. The Bulldogs came in at No. 2, their highest ranking ever.

7NON-CONFERENCE WINS: The Bulldogs won all of their non-conference matches this for just the third time in program history. The 7-0-0 start was the best since 2012.

19TOP DRAWER POLL: MSU received its first ranking in program history this week when TopDrawerSoccer.com placed the Bulldogs at No. 19.

TEAM NOTES

MAKING HISTORY• The Bulldogs will play their first game ever as a ranked team on

Friday after landing at No. 19 in the TopDrawerSoccer.com poll this week. It is MSU’s first ranking in program history.

• Tom Anagnost has now led the Bulldogs to their highest RPI in school history in back-to-back years. Last season, MSU climbed as high as No. 37 for the first time. This season, State opened the year at No. 2 and checks in at the No. 3 spot this week.

• MSU was one of three teams in the SEC to win all of its non-con-ference contests along with Auburn and Texas A&M. This year marks just the third time in school history State has done so.

• Combined with the end of 2017, State’s perfect non-conference stretch led to a school-record-tying eight-match winning streak.

COMEBACK KIDS• The Bulldogs claimed a historic comeback win in overtime against

No. 13/6 South Carolina (9/20). After scoring first in all of their non-conference matches, MSU has trailed first in all three of its SEC games.

• The win was State’s first against a ranked opponent since 2015 (Oct. 21 vs. No. 20 Kentucky) and snapped South Carolina’s 24-match unbeaten streak in SEC play that dated to the same year. MSU defeated the Gamecocks for the first time since 2005.

• MSU last won a conference game in overtime in 2012 when the Bulldogs defeated Ole Miss, 3-2.

• After playing nine one-goal games last year, State went eight games before a one-goal match in 2018. Each of the last two matches have been decided by a single tally.

YOUTH MOVEMENT• State is tied with LSU and South Carolina for the highest number

of freshmen in the SEC this season (13). Eighteen of MSU’s 27 players are underclassmen (66.7 percent), which ranks sixth in the conference.

• The Bulldogs welcome 15 newcomers and return 12 players from a year ago. Of all the teams on State’s schedule this season, only South Alabama (11) returned fewer players.

• Two MSU freshmen are currently chasing the program’s freshmen records. Miranda Carrasco is fourth on the freshman leaderboard in assists (6), but would need 10 more to catch Jessi Moore’s 2001 performance.

• Moore also holds the freshman goals record at 11, but Zakirah McGillivary is in the hunt and currently tied for third with six.

• McGillivary’s four game-winning goals are tied with Moore for the freshman record. She is one shy of tying MaKayla Waldner for the MSU single-season record (5) set last season.

FIRST BLOOD• State was 9-2-2 when scoring first in 2017 and is 7-0-0 this year

when opening the scoring. All-time, the Bulldogs are 140-34-6 when they net the first goal of a match.

• The Bulldogs found the net just 3:10 into the 2018 season when MaKayla Waldner scored a header goal. She followed that per-formance with the 10th-fastest goal in school history at Stephen F. Austin (0:56). At Memphis, Brooke McKee scored just 1:10 into the match to close a streak of five matches with MSU scoring inside the first five minutes.

• Last week’s shutout lost to Auburn ended MSU’s 11-game streak of scoring first that saw the team post a 9-1-1 record.

WINNING WALDNER• MaKayla Waldner set the school record for single-season

game-winning goals with five last year. After recording the game-winning goal in the first two matches of 2018, she is just one shy of matching the MSU career record.

• The junior leads MSU in shots (30) and shots on goal (15). She finished the 2017 season ranked second in the SEC and No. 22 in the NCAA in game-winners.

• She was ranked the No. 14 player in the SEC by TopDrawerSoccer.com entering the season.

CARRASCO CROSSES• A fixture on MSU’s back line, Miranda Carrasco has also played

a part in the Bulldogs’ scoring. The Cypress, Texas, native is tied for second in the SEC in assists with six and is tied for 12th in the nation.

• In her debut against Southern Miss (8/16), the freshman took the corners that led to the first and third goals of the match.

• She picked up two assists at Stephen F. Austin (8/19), both off corners, and played mulitple dangerous balls into the box from out wide.

• Against Central Arkansas (8/30), she played a perfect long ball in that Carly Mauldin beat the keeper to with a header to score.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU • MaKayla Waldner scored twice on her birthday at Stephen

F. Austin (8/19). She has now scored on or the day before her birthday every season at MSU.

• AK Ward celebrated her birthday on August 22 and scored the game-winning goal at Memphis the next day. Last year, she scored her first career goal against Missouri State (8/20/17) just two days before her birthday.

• Courtney Robicheaux (9/26) and Hailey Zerbel (9/29) are up this week against Florida. Robicheaux has scored five times in her career, while Zerbel is looking for her first.

• Gabriella Coleman (10/10) is the fifth potential birthday scorer on the roster, but she has yet to line up her goals with a game near her date of birth.

DAWG DEFENSE• Prior to its 3-0 loss at Auburn, the last time an MSU squad lost

by more than one goal was Oct. 20, 2016, when the Bulldogs lost, 3-0, at Tennessee.

• MSU is holding opponents to an average of 9.2 shots per game, which is fourth in the conference. No Bulldog squad has ever held opponents under 10.0 shots per game for a full season.

• State has held opponents to five or fewer shots four times this season and a .076 shooting percentage.

• Rhylee DeCrane has six shutouts this year as MSU blanked six of its first seven opponents for the first time in program history. She made a season-high six saves in the win over No. 13/6 South Carolina.

MATCH-BY-MATCH STARTERS

TEAM NOTES

PARTY LIKE IT’S ‘99• Zakirah McGillivary sent a school-record-record crowd home

happy on Thursday with an overtime winner against No. 13/6 South Carolina (9/20).

• She was named the SEC Freshman of the Week (9/24) for her ef-forts. McGillivary earned the honor (8/27) after scoring two goals and picking up an assist against Memphis and South Alabama.

• Her first award marked the first time a Bulldog has received the honor since 2012. The second made her the first MSU player to be recognized with a weekly honor twice in one season.

• McGillivary scored her first career goal and assisted on the first goal of the match at Memphis (8/23). She followed that perfor-mance with the game-winner at South Alabama (8/26).

• South Alabama kicked off a streak that saw her score the game-winner in three straight matches (Central Arkansas - 8/30, Austin Peay - 9/2).

FRESH FACES• The Bulldogs added new members to the coaching and support

staff this season to go along with the newcomers on the roster.• Josh Rife joins the Bulldogs as an assistant coach after serving

as the associate head coach at Liberty. He brings a decade of coaching experience and an 11-year playing career to the staff.

• Jeremy Sullivan comes to State from Austin Peay where he was the associate head coach. Sullivan will serve as a volunteer assistant working primarily with the goalkeepers.

• Geri Siudzinski spent the past two seasons as a graduate assistant coach at Ashland University in Ohio. She has joined the staff as coordinator of operations.

• Aaron Duvall recently finished graduate school at East Tennessee State and will be the soccer program’s strength and conditioning coach this season.

MSU PLAYING 24TH SEASON OF SOCCER• State will play its 24th season of soccer in 2018. MSU holds a

165-255-30 all-time record.• MSU’s match against Austin Peay on Sept. 2 marked the 23rd

anniversary of the first match in school history.• Tom Anagnost is the fifth head coach in program history and is

in his second season at the helm. Anagnost led the Bulldogs to was then their highest ranking in the RPI in program history last season when they reached No. 37.

• Anagnost became the fastest coach in program history to win 10 matches with the Bulldog victory over Southern Miss (8/16), doing so in just 19 games.

SOUTHEASTERN STRENGTH• The Southeastern Conference held the No. 1 RPI in the nation

last year and put an NCAA-leading nine teams into the national tournament. Two of those teams advanced to the Elite 8.

• Based on final 2017 RPIs, State will face the toughest SEC sched-ule of any team in the conference with their opponents holding an average RPI of 27.6. In the most-recent RPI rankings, MSU’s schedule ranks second with an average opponent RPI of 36.6.

• State opened the SEC slate with four straight matches against teams that finished in the top 25 of the RPI last year.

• The Bulldogs will play their third straight ranked opponent on Sunday. MSU has never played three consecutive matches against ranked teams.

HOME SWEET HOME• Last season, MSU finished with a 7-2-3 record (.708) at home. • The Bulldogs have added four new attendance figures to the

all-time top 10 crowds in school history under Tom Anagnost, including a record-breaking 1,402 fans against No. 13/6 South Carolina this year.

• State is undefeated at home this year and has allowed just one goal at the MSU Soccer Field, coming on a penalty kick. MSU has outshot opponents by 59 attempts (95-34) in Starkville, but that lead is trimmed to just 23 shots on the road (81-58).

Statistic Home Road Goals 14 11 Goals Allowed 1 6 Shots 95 81 Shots Allowed 34 58 Shots on Goal 42 36 Shots on Goal Allowed 11 24 Corner Kicks 35 20 Corner Kicks Allowed 8 21

AN MSU WIN WOULD...• Make the 2018 team the fastest to 10 wins in program history. The

current record is 13 matches set by the 1997 squad.• Snap a five-match losing streak to Florida and be the Bulldogs

first win in the series since 2011.• Mark MSU’s best start to conference play (2-2-0) since 2001,

when the Bulldogs won the SEC West Division championship.• Guarantee that the Bulldogs finish the regular season above .500,

which would mark just the second pair of consecutive winning seasons in school history (1996-97).
