Report on the Pilgrimage to Medugorje The first night of our arrival I invited all the “newbies” for a brief tour of some of the sites around St. James Church. On our arrival we found that Adoration of the Most Blessed Sacrament was taking place in the large area behind the Church. It was a fitting way for us to begin our pilgrimage to Medugorje: adoration of our Lord Jesus Christ. When it was over I showed some in our group the “grotto”, a large outdoor area where there is a large crucifix and opportunities to light candles. Several of us lit candles in memory of deceased loved ones, offer recovery from sicknesses and injuries. We then joined the rest of our group at our favorite restau-rant, Valdo’s, for some pizza and deserts. After an hour we returned to our Pansion for a well-deserved night’s sleep!

Thursday morning I was awakened by a thunderstorm at 7am. We gathered at breakfast at 8am in the dining hall. You might wonder what would be served for breakfast. I’ve traveled to many different parts of the world. I’ve been served a ham sandwich in Haiti; scones and a full Irish breakfast in Ireland; empanadas in Colombia; sweet rolls and coffee in Austria, breakfast wraps in Texas, etc. In Medugorje, they like to offer different kinds of foods that would ap-peal to many different nationalities.

So each day at breakfast we had a variety of eggs, breads, cheeses, sausages, sliced meats, yogurts, liver paté, etc. Their coffee machine made a variety of coffees and teas too. A special treat for me and our group was a pot of their “Croatian” coffee, rich and strong!

After breakfast we gathered in a special room right off the dining area. It had lots of charm. It looked like a small alpine beer hall where the locals would gather after dinner to continue conversation with the local ale! Well, it was just the right size for our group!

I began each day with a decade of the rosary, beginning this day with the Annunciation: the angel Gabriel announces to Mary that she was most favored and would bear a son who would be the “anointed one” that God has promised for generations. More next week….

World Mission Sunday —Baptized and Sent EVERY YEAR, SOMETHING SPECIAL HAPPENS on the next-to-last Sunday of October.

WORLD MISSION SUNDAY joins all Catholics of the world into one community of faith. By virtue of our Baptism, we are called to be missionaries, through prayer, participation in the Eucharist, and by giving generously to the collection for the Society for the Propaga-tion of the Faith.

This year, Pope Francis addresses his World Mission Sunday mes-sage to us as we live out our baptismal call to be sent forth to evange-lize the world. This is the mission that all Christians have received, and God gives us the grace to live it out wherever we may be.

As we pray and respond on World Mission Sunday here at home, we share in those celebrations taking place in every parish, seminary, school and convent all over the world. Together with the Church of Christ on mission in the world, we are baptized and sent, providing the prayerful and financial support necessary to bring the Lord’s mer-cy and concrete help to the most vulnerable communities in the Pope’s missions.

In a world where so much divides us, World Mission Sunday rejoices in our unity as missionaries by our Baptism. And it provides an op-portunity to support the life-giving presence of the Church among the poor and marginalized in more than 1,111 mission dioceses.

altar servers Altar Serving is a wonderful way to assist our clergy at the weekend liturgies and celebrations throughout the year. We are very proud of our young people for being so prepared and reverent in their service. In addition to serving your parish, this is a great chance to practice presence, poise and diligence—important qualities as you get older. If you are interested in joining this ministry, we would love to have you! Students must have received First Eucharist in order to serve. Please come to an informational meeting with an adult on Thursday, October 24, at 5:30, in the Geraghty Parish Center; we’ll have pizza and go through any questions that you may have. No RSVP necessary but contact Jeff Kamradt with any questions: [email protected]. See you then!”

prison ministry The Saint Dominic Church Prison Ministry currently has twelve members on its team. On a rotating schedule, three members of the Prison Ministry visit men at the Willard-Cybulski Correctional Institution in Enfield every Monday evening from 6:30 p.m. to 8:15 p.m., leaving the Saint Dominic Church parking lot at 5:15 p.m. What we are most proud of and celebrate as a team is that our group is announced by the Corrections Officer as the St. Dominic Catholic Men’s Faith Sharing group prior to each session.

The Prison Ministry utilizes the Small Christian Community format based on Insights, a seasonal scripture- based reflection booklet, and focuses on the readings, including the Gospel, from the Sunday mass prior to the visit. Ministry members and the men have the opportunity to pray together, read the scripture readings aloud, and discuss reflection questions to help gain a more personal insight to the readings. Ministry members are all grateful for this opportunity to share their Catholic faith with the men; truly embracing the spirit of the Corporal Work of Mercy, “I was in prison and you came to visit me.” (Matthew 25:36)

Deacon Michael Torres of Saint Martha Parish in Enfield is the Catholic Chaplain for the Willard-Cybulski Correctional Institution and assists the Prison Ministry by arranging for background checks and the orientation that is required prior to anyone volunteering at a correctional institution.

If you feel Jesus calling you to this Ministry please contact Mark Proffitt at (860) 621-4316, or [email protected].

Please stop by and visit our table as part of the St. Dominic Ministry Fair this weekend and talk with the Prison Ministry team members about their experiences meeting with the men from Willard-Cybulski Correctional Institution.

men’s and women’s ACTS retreats

An ACTS retreat is a three-day, three-night Catholic lay retreat presented by men or women who have attended prior ACTS retreats, under the guidance of a Catholic Guide. Offering a unique format, this re-treat is unlike anything you may have experienced in the past. The goals are to renew yourself spiritually, to strengthen your faith and its application in your daily life, and to create lasting and supporting friendships within your church communities.

The Retreat begins Thursday evening, with a 5:45 pm check-in at the sponsoring parish. Participants will then be transported to Our Lady of Calvary Retreat House, Farmington for the remainder of the retreat. The retreat will end on Sunday, with a morning mass and reception at the sponsoring parish. Transportation to and from Farmington will be pro-vided.

Go to actsct.org for more information about ACTS retreats. On the 'Events' page are links to an informative brochure and retreat registration form.

good news and bad news!

The Men’s Club’s fiscal year ended on September 30th.

The Good News: To kick off the 2019-2020 year the Club scheduled a great Ger-man/Polish dinner event on October 27th. These events help raise money for their successful Scholarship Pro-gram.

The Bad News: It’s time to let you know that “the DUES ARE DUE”.

The annual fee remains at $10.00 and you may use the envelope you’ve received in the mail or the ones available in the Geraghty Parish Center. In today’s busy world you may not be able to make the monthly meetings or attend all our fundraisers, but your annual dues contribution assists the club in making possible the many wonderful things it does for our Parish. If you are not a member please consider joining this fine group of men and offering them your ideas and help. Thank you

health ministry Blood pressure screenings by an RN are held the second Sunday of each month in the parish center health office. Fall & holiday salty foods: Colder weather brings a new set of foods that are higher in salt/sodium. If you are treated for high blood pressure or heart failure, or wish to prevent those conditions, limit your salt/sodium intake and read your labels for these wintry foods: canned soup and stews, baked goods, shellfish, ham, and Chinese takeout food with soy sauce or soups. Instead, try your hand at making soup with low sodium broth in your crockpot or instant pot, eat fresh apples and other fall fruits for snacks and desserts, choose white fish or salmon, have turkey or chicken instead of ham, and order “ steamed” Chinese dishes using duck sauce in place of soy sauce/gravy provided by the restaurant. Your heart will thank you! Diabetes support group for persons with diabetes or pre-diabetes meets the last Tuesday of the month from 10-11:30 am in the accessible parish Community Learning Center, from September through June. LADIES: Many parishioners do not use the traditional envelope system and will not receive a Ladies Pink Membership envelope. In turn, we have fewer paying members and are asking those wanting to pay dues, to please put your dues in an envelope along with your name and phone number and mark it for Ladies of Saint Dominic on the outside. You can also pick up a ladies envelope in the parish center near the sacristy. Checks made payable to Saint Dominic Church. You may put it in the collection basket or mail it to the church. Dues are $10.00 per year and are collected in September. We meet 6-7 months a year, a fun group, and always enjoy new faces to our group. Thank you for reading this request and paying your dues. Partners in Faith We had a wonderful start to our new year! Thank you to everyone who came and learned about one of the prayer traditions of our faith, the Rosary. We have started planning for next month already. If you missed class, there is no makeup—which is why we encourage you to switch to another night. There are only 7 classes; missing even one is significant. Illness and emergencies arise but always call the office to see what is available later in the week.

Families who eat are expected on the hour (11:00 Sunday, 5:00 M/W/F and 6:00 T/T) and families who are joining us just for class should arrive at :25 after the hour so that we are all ready to start on time. Dinner this month is pizza. Looking forward to it!

Those families who did not register before the September 12 extended deadline should turn in their registration as soon as possible in order to join us beginning with the November session.

Students preparing for First Reconciliation and First Eucharist this year met for their first workshop of the year. Please ask you child about class and help them with any questions they might have. When you come to church, sit in the front so they can see!

If your child would like to receive the sacraments of Reconciliation and Eucharist but has not been attending religion classes at this point, please call the office about our Catch-Up option.

Students who would like to be a junior lector and share the Second Reading at our weekend liturgies with our community, please call Mrs. Kamradt to start this awesome opportunity. Besides helping our community, you will be learning the valuable skills of poise, public speaking and diligence—all traits that academic honor so-cieties and college admissions offices LOVE to see on resumes.

Students who are age 3 through kindergarten are invited to join our Joy in the Beginning group which meets during the 10:00 am mass on Sundays. Led by a kindergarten teacher in the Bristol district, Joy is how our youngest parishioners meet Jesus—through play, crafts, storytelling and Bible stories. There is a small fee and the group meets almost every Sunday (you will get a calendar). Registrations will be available on the black-topped table outside the RE office beginning this weekend. We begin meeting Sunday, November 3.

Students who are in grades 1—> 3 are invited to come to the 10:00 am mass on Sundays and join our Good News group when it gathers downstairs at the start of the First Reading. Look for our teacher standing in the rear of the church and join her for about 15 minutes; you will come back up to rejoin your family for the rest of mass during the offertory. There is no fee for this gathering and it only meets when you see the teacher standing in the back at the start of the First Reading—no teacher, no class. Start looking for the teacher on Sunday, October 26.

Confirmation -Confirmation was celebrated here on Friday night with Monsignor John Georgia conferring the Sacrament on 72 of our young people. It was a beautiful liturgy and a wonderful night for these students who worked hard to be prepared. Thank you to all of their families for being diligent and consistent in their dedication to the program. Thank you, too, to our liturgical team that night, including Fr. May, our deacons, our music ministry, our EMOHC ministry and the Knights of Columbus. Students who did not pick up their certificates can do so from the black-topped table outside the RE office. Congratulations!

Thank you to all the Confirmation Class of 2020 students and parents for a great “1st Day” turnout. I look forward to seeing all of you on your scheduled days and taking this journey together. We have a lot ahead of us in the coming year, with classes, guest speakers, activities, assignments and retreats.

On October 21st we will have our first guest speaker, Bret Nicols who will be joining us for a two-hour event. We ask that everyone to be prompt to the event. Thank you , Michelle Batista

annual memorial liturgy Friday, November 8, 2019 We would like to invite all parishioners to join us for this special Liturgy remembering all of our loved ones who have died. Once a year we take time for this special remembrance. November is a month we dedicate to those who have gone before us. It is also a time to extend sympathy and encour-agement to those of us who know the many faces of grief. Invitations have been sent to those whom we were aware had experienced the loss of a family member since November 2018.

Let us join together in remembering and celebrating those we have loved in life. Would you please complete the bottom portion of this page and return it via the collection basket or drop it off at the parish office as soon as possible (preferably before October 26th ). You may also let us know if you will be joining us that day by calling the parish office at 860.628.0349.

Each year, we prepare a video presentation as part of the service and for the reception fol-lowing the memorial mass. We would ask that you please send one photo of your loved one (no frames please). The photo will be included in our video presentation. Your original pho-to will be available for pick up at the conclusion of the memorial mass. saint dominic reads The Education Committee is happy to announce that it's time for the next season of the popular Saint Dominic Reads!

The selection for our community reading and discussion this time is the New York Times best selling book, Tattoos on the Heart (The Power of Boundless Compassion) by Father Gregory Boyle, SJ, the founder of Homeboy Industries.

Author Annie Lamott describes it as “An astonishing book….about suffering and dignity, death and resurrection. It is lovely and tough and tender beyond my ability to describe, and left me in tears of both sorrow and laughter.”

Tattoos on the Heart will be sold after each Mass on October 19 and 20 (at the Ministry Fair) and October 26 and 27, at a cost of $13.

Father Boyle donates all of his net proceeds from the book to Homeboy Industries.

Our book discussion will be held in January, and will include a short video interview with Father Boyle (or ‘G-dog’, as the homies call him).
