Indirect Resellers

Many resellers prefer the indirect model and partner with a CSP Indirect Provider (like Re-sello) for the support and billing infrastructure they need to sell through CSP. This is good for partners who want to fully leverage the ben-efits of selling Microsoft cloud services, with a short time to market but without the large upfront investment. Indirect Resellers still build strong relationships with their customers, but offload Microsoft’s support and billing re-quirements to a specialized Indirect Provider.

Direct Bill Partners

Direct Bill Partners work directly with Microsoft and are responsible for the entire customer relationship, including strict auto-mation requirements for provisioning, man-agement and invoicing, as well as offer their own product support to end-users. Direct Bill Partners must also exceed a 300.000 USD annual revenue threshold, and purchase a monthly support package with Microsoft.

Starting out as a new Microsoft CSP partner

As an IT organization you can either purchase directly from Microsoft, or via a CSP Indirect Provider. Buying directly from Microsoft comes with a set of strict requirements. Most IT organi-zations take the indirect route, and choose an Indirect Provider.

CSP models: Indirect Reseller or Direct Bill Partner?

Partners who would like to join the CSP program and sell Microsoft cloud solutions to their customers can choose from one of two models, each with their own benefits and requirements.

Starting out as a CSP Indirect Reseller is without cost, the organization just needs to choose an Indirect Provider, have an active Microsoft Partner Network (MPN) account and become regis-tered into the Microsoft CSP program.

CSP requirements for Direct Bill Partners

Becoming a Direct Bill Partner is a difficult process, requiring partners to adhere to strict re-quirements. Becoming an Indirect Reseller is much easier, since the Indirect Provider takes care of these requirements:1. An active support contract with Microsoft (15,000+ USD year)2. Annual purchase threshold (300,000+ USD)3. Offer added value ( managed service, IP service or a customer solution application)4. Automated CSP solution provisioning, billing and management5. Regular target assessments by Microsoft6. Offer ITIL oriented customer support

Transition from CSP Direct Bill Partner to Indirect Reseller

Active CSP Direct Bill Partners can transition to a CSP Indirect Reseller status by choosing an Indirect Provider that supports the transition process.

Because Azure Virtual Desktop runs in the cloud, it speeds up deployment and significantly reduces the time needed to deploy compared to running on-premises, enabling organizations to deploy in minutes instead of days or even weeks.

IT Admins can simply choose Azure Virtual Desktop from the Azure Marketplace and set up an Azure resource manager template of the required VMs and usage. Workload types based on user persona’s makes this process even easier. And because it runs on Azure, scaling up and down the number of users and VMs on demand can be automated as well.

Offer added value

Using Azure Virtual Desktop requires either Microsoft 365 (Microsoft 365 F1, E3, E5, A3, A5, Busi-ness) or Windows 10 (E3, E5, A3, A5) licenses. Besides that, users only pay for the Azure usage. This offers Microsoft partners the opportunity to sell Windows 10 as fully managed virtual desktop (DaaS) solution through the CSP program.

Microsoft partners can further add value with additional functionalities on top of Azure Virtual Desktop by developing their own services and applications, such as deployment automation and VM provisioning and scaling. These can then be offered through the Azure Marketplace.

On-premises Perpetual Software Licenses

Perpetual software licenses are ‘purchase once, use forever’, such as desktop tools, infrastruc-ture services and productivity servers. Software licenses don’t expire, but upgrades to newer versions are not included. Perpetual software licenses are meant for on-premises use, instead of running on Azure like most other CSP cloud services such as Microsoft 365.

Use cases include running software on-premises, cross-selling cloud services to on-premises customers, and migrating customers from on-premises to the subscription-based services in the cloud.

Why your organization should offer perpetual licenses

The addition of on-premises perpetual licenses to the Microsoft CSP program opens up new opportunities for CSP partners. It also makes it much easier for Microsoft partners purchasing via older Microsoft partner programs, such as Open License, to move to the CSP program now that perpetual software is also available via the CSP program.
