WORLD HERITAGE SITE SUOMENLINNAWorld Heritage Site Suomenlinna is a cultural treasure. Its construc-tion began in the mid-18th century, when Finland was still part of Sweden. Today, the fortress and its museums, restaurants and events are a memorable experience for visitors of all ages. Suomenlinna is a popular visitor attraction and also a home to 800 residents. Suomenlinna is only accessible by water. There is a ferry service throughout the year and a water bus service in the summer.
Suomenlinna has something for everyone: six kilometres of walls, 100 cannons, exciting tunnels, beautiful parks and several restaurants & cafés. There are six museums in Suomenlinna. One of them is the submarine Vesikko that was used during the Second World War. Guided walking tours are organized daily in summer season and on weekends all year round. Guided tour is an excellent way to cover the eventful history of the fortress and its main sights.

EHRENSVÄRD MUSEUM 1
The Ehrensvärd Museum is located by the Great Courtyard, in the old Commander’s House. The interior of the museum illustrates an 18th cen-tury residence. The collection includes paintings, furniture, weapons, and ship models portraying vessels of the Swedish Archipelago Fleet. The first resident of the building was Augustin Ehrensvärd (1710–1772), the founder of the Suomenlinna fortress. Ticket sales on the 2nd floor (no elevator).

MILITARY MUSEUM´S MANEGE 2
The exhibition at the Military Museum’s Manege ”Finnish Defence Forces 100 Years at War and Peace” portrays the wars Finland has fought during its independence: the Civil War in 1918, the Winter War in 1939–40, the Continuation War in 1941–44 and the Lapland War in 1944–45. The exhibition continues in the adjacent building, telling the story of the Finnish Defence Forces in the post-war period up to the present day.

SUBMARINE VESIKKO 3
Submarine Vesikko was built in 1933 in Turku and operated as a part of the Finnish navy during the wars in 1939–44. It was opened to the public as a museum after restoration work in 1973. Onboard Vesikko, the visitor can experience the crowded working and living spaces of the submari-ners in the midst of diesel and electric engines and torpedoes.

SUOMENLINNA MUSEUM 4
The main exhibition of the Suomenlinna Museum unveils the history of the fortress from the 18th century to the present day, through the Swed-ish, Russian and Finnish eras. Learn about the years of the construction works, life in the naval base, role of the fortress in conflicts, to the strug-gles of the Civil War and life thereafter. The temporary exhibition of the museum introduces current themes. A short-film, Suomenlinna Experi-ence, brings the past of the fortress to life in 25 min.

SUOMENLINNA TOY MUSEUM 5
The Toy Museum (est. 1985) presents old toys, the oldest of which go back to the beginning of the 19th century. The timeline stops with the fall of the Soviet Union. This private museum features antique dolls, Teddy Bears, Tin Toys, dolls houses and other toys full of history. There is a charming little Café Samovarbar in the Toy Museum, which has an outdoor terra-ce. The museum is located on the ground floor of a villa built in 1911.

Amos Rex, a private art museum with unique architecture, was opened in central Helsinki in 2018. Amos Rex consists of new underground exhibition spaces, the old Lasipalatsi (glass palace) from 1936 and its Bio Rex cine-ma, as well as a vibrant event forum on Lasipalatsi Square, which serves as the roof of the exhibition hall. In 2020, Amos Rex’s exhibition program-me extends from contemporary art to ancient Egypt. Unlike other art museums, Amos Rex is open on Mondays but closed on Tuesdays.

9COLLECTION OF REITZ FOUNDATION
The Reitz Foundation’s collections are on display at the former home of developer and art collector Lauri Reitz. Reitz’s home was opened as an art museum in 1971. The museum showcases landmark works of Finnish fine art primarily from the 19th century as well as a unique col-lection of Finnish antique silver from the 17th to 19th centuries. Other notable items in the collection include antique weaponry and antique timepieces dating back to as early as the 16th century as well as Meissen and Sèvres porcelain. The Design Museum Helsinki founded in 1873, is one of the oldest design museums in the world. The collection consists of 75.000 objects, 45.000 drawings and 125.000 photographs. You are welcome to enjoy the versatile exhibition program as well as the collection exhibition Utopia Now - The Story of Finnish Design. This exhibition tells about the central role of design in the emergence of the Finnish welfare state.

Haltia is a new kind of exhibition and event centre by Nuuksio National Park. Haltia’s exhibitions introduce you to the magnificent scenery of Finnish national parks, as well as nature sites in the Helsinki metropoli-tan area. Finnair City Bus transports passengers every 20–30 minutes daily between Helsinki City and Helsinki Airport. At the airport, the bus arrives and departs from the bus station at Terminal 2. In the city, the bus de-parts from platform 30 at Eliel Square, next to Central Station, and stops at Hesperia Park (on Mannerheimintie opposite to Hotel Scandic Park). The journey to the airport takes ca. 30 mins and is driven via the fastest route available. Our buses have free WiFi and air-conditioning.

Helsinki is well known for its efficient public transportation system. Free travel with Helsinki Card applies to all vehicles: trams, buses, the metro, commuter trains and Suomenlinna ferry. Helsinki Card CITY holders are entitled to unlimited travel within the zones AB. Children under 7 years travel free of charge on public transport.

Show the card to the card reader when boarding a vehicle or entering the metro/Suomenlinna ferry. You do not need to press any of the card reader buttons. Penalty fare and a single fare are charged from anyone travelling without a valid ticket. Therefore, it is impor-tant to show your Helsinki Card to the card reader.

From the beginning of May through August, ferries depart in daytime at shorter intervals, 3–4 times per hour. The ferry trip takes about 15 minutes.
