WELCOME ICC PRESIDENT

It gives me great pleasure to welcome all the teams, officials and spectators to the ICC World Twenty20 to be held on the beautiful island of Sri Lanka.

This is the fourth edition of the ICC World Twenty20 but the first to be held in Asia, and the tournament again showcases not only the world’s best male Twenty20 players but also the best women cricketers in nation versus nation cricket.

The previous three ICC World Twenty20 events have been resounding successes – in South Africa in 2007 when India took home the trophy; in England in 2009 when Pakistan and England won the men’s and women’s events respectively, and then in 2010 in the Caribbean when England and Australia were victorious. We’ve seen three events and three different winners in the men’s event and two different winners in the women’s tournament.

I am delighted that, once again, the men’s and women’s semi-finals and final will be played on the same day, in front of the same crowd, at the same venue, as this helps give the women’s game unprecedented promotion across the world. By integrating the two events, the ICC is standing by its strategic plan pledge to build a bigger, better global game.

Sri Lanka is a wonderful place to stage the ICC World Twenty20, and this event follows fast in the footsteps of last year’s wonderfully successful ICC Cricket World Cup, which was held not only here in Sri Lanka but also in India and Bangladesh. The legacy of that tournament was three outstanding grounds at Premadasa, Pallekele and Hambantota that are being utilized in this event along with the beautifully picturesque Galle, which will host the women’s group games.

Sri Lanka was the beaten finalist in the 2009 ICC World Twenty20 and the again in the ICC Cricket World Cup last year. I am sure than Mahela Jayawardene’s team will want to go one better on home soil and lift an ICC global trophy again. While in the women’s event, New Zealand, beaten finalists in the last three ICC global women’s events, will also be looking to take that final step.

I look forward to greeting the eventual winners in Colombo and presenting them with the ICC World Twenty20 trophies. I wish all 12 men’s and 8 women’s teams the very best of luck as they look to add to the rich history of this event with vibrant and exciting cricket played in the Great Spirit of this Great Sport.

Travelling in Sri Lanka 1.1Travelling in Sri Lanka

SRI LANKAWe welcome you to our beautiful island, Sri Lanka. The island’s proud history of over 2500 years and the breathtaking diversity of scenery will capture your heart and soul like no other destination. May the time you spend on our Island be filled with exciting experiences – memories of which you will carry long after you leave our shores!

What may strike you most about Sri Lanka is its amazing diversity of scenery. It is possible to pass green paddy fields, sun-bronzed beaches, ruined cities, small lively villages, near desert regions, sanctuaries for wildlife in tropical jungles, and hill country tea plantations literally within hours of each other.

Ancient Sanskrit literature refers to Sri Lanka as ‘Sinhaladvipa’ – Island of the Sinhalese. The people called by that name have inhabited this island from earliest historical times.

However, the earliest recorded civilization records back to 380 BC, when Anuradhapura (205 km from Colombo) was established as the first Capital City. Following the advent of Buddhism in the 3rd century BC, a civilization rich in Indo-Aryan culture took root. It produced the great cities with “dagabas” which compare, and even exceed in size, the pyramids of Egypt, palaces and pleasure gardens, rich art and architecture and the gigantic irrigation works, many of which are still in use today.

In the 16th century, the island had its first recorded encounter with traders and colonizers, with the arrival of the Portuguese in 1505. What followed was a period of nearly five hundred years during which the island came under the control and influence of the Portuguese, Dutch and British. While the Portuguese and Dutch ruled over the maritime regions for a rough 150 years each, the British established complete control over the island with the fall of the Kandyan Kingdom in 1815. They too ruled for 150 years before the country regained independence in 1948. The impact of many cultures over the centuries, from the South Indian to the Moorish and that of the western colonizers have resulted in the country’s culture being enriched by a rich diversity, much of which is in evidence today. The island’s economy has traditionally been based on agriculture, with rice as the main food crop. Spices such as cardamom, cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg and pepper have been age old exports, as were gems and even peacocks and elephants. With western commercial influence, rice gave way to cash crops, until British made tea the base of the economy.

The new thrust in the economy is on export led industry. Agriculture is now being revived. Non-traditional exports such as garments, seafood, foliage, cut flowers and tropical fish and value added agro-industries have, in recent years, contributed to the economic advance of Sri Lanka.

Although well on the road to modernization, the country and its people still cherish most of their traditional values and take pride in their rich culture. As much as the beauty and the diversity of scenery, and the warmth and friendship of the people, it is an aspect which continues to attract visitors from abroad.

HOW TEAMS QUALIFIED

MEN’S TEAMSThe ICC World Twenty20 Sri Lanka 2012 will be contested by 12 teams - the 10 Full Members and two qualifiers, Ireland and Afghanistan.

The ten full members of the ICC are taking part in the event after accepting invitations to do so, but Ireland and Afghanistan had a much tougher route to Sri Lanka.

The two associates qualified for the tournament after reaching the final of the ICC World Twenty20 Qualifier 2012, the ultimate event in a qualification pathway that commenced with 12 regional events. The 16-team tournament brought together the strongest Associate and Affiliate Members from the five regions. Ireland, the number two ranked team, beat defending champions Afghanistan by five wickets in the final in front of a crowd of over 5,000 fans to win the tournament.

As the tournament winner, Ireland joins Australia and the West Indies in Group B, while Afghanistan will complete Group A, which also includes defending champion England and 2007 winner India.

WOMEN’S TEAMSEight women’s teams will be competing in the Women’s fixtures of the ICC World Twenty20 Sri Lanka 2012. Six of the teams are taking part in the tournament by virtue of finishing in the top six of the previous event held in the West Indies – defending champions Australia, along with New Zealand, India, England, West Indies and Sri Lanka.

The remaining two positions will be filled by Pakistan and South Africa, who qualified through the ICC Women’s World Cup Qualifier Bangladesh 2011. The qualifier provided teams with qualification opportunities for two global events – the World Twenty20 Sri Lanka 2012 and the ICC Women’s World Cup 2013. Ten teams competed in the tournament, and Pakistan and South Africa captured the final two positions in the ICC World Twenty20 Sri Lanka 2012, as the other two semi-finalists (West Indies and Sri Lanka) had already booked their places in the tournament by virtue of their performances at the previous event.

ESSENTIAL MEDIA INFORMATION

OVERVIEWThe ICC World Twenty20 Sri Lanka 2012 aims to provide extensive, world-class facilities to the media.

This section provides the practical information you require in relation to the media facilities available, both on match days and non-match days, at the venues and off-site. These facilities include:

• accreditation information

• broadcast information

• media transportation on match days

• central media centres

• venue media centres

• accreditation centres

More detailed information on each of these topics can be found at the online media centre at www.worldt20media.com.

ACCREDITATION OVERVIEWA full tournament accreditation system will be in operation across all venues for all ICC World Twenty20 Sri Lanka 2012 matches, warm-up matches and practice sessions.

The accreditation system is designed to help, not to hinder. Its purpose is to provide accredited persons with a controlled environment in which they can work as efficiently and as effectively as possible. Accreditation is the method of providing access to match venues for all working personnel who do not hold a match ticket.

Media personnel wishing to access the stadia or any off-site practice grounds on non-match days are advised to wear their accreditation, as the venue security will be operating 24 hours a day during the tournament, and accreditation will be required to access media facilities and any preferential media parking that may be arranged.

An accreditation pass is personal and non-transferable. It allows access to certain accredited areas but does not entitle the holder to a press seat or photo position. On match days, a press box or photographer match pass will be required. Certain members of the media will also require a secondary accreditation device (see below).

All accreditation-related queries should be directed to [email protected].

Note: All information is correct at time of going to press. Please check the online media centre at www.worldt20media.com for any amendments to the following.

4.2 Essential Media Information

ACCREDITATION GUIDE

ACCREDITATION CENTRESThere will be an accreditation centre located in each host city. The accreditation centres in Colombo, Kandy and Hambantota will open from Saturday 1 September 2012, while the centre in Galle will open from 18 September 2012. Please note the published hours are flexible and subject to change should the need arise.

Please check the online media centre for any amendments at www.worldtwenty20media.com.

TOURNAMENT ACCREDITATION PASS TYPESMedia will be issued with a tournament accreditation pass. The tournament accreditation pass is a photo pass for multi-venue users. This pass will be valid for all tournament venues, warm-up matches and official team practices.

To gain access to a match, media requires a secondary accreditation device. In addition to a tournament accreditation pass, media will require a media match ticket. Photographers will also be issued a numbered bib on each match day.

TOURNAMENT ACCREDITATION PASS COLLECTION PROCEDURESWritten press and photographers must collect their passes from the accreditation centre they indicated in their original application.

All accreditation passes must be collected in person. You will be asked to produce the photo identity document you provided when you applied on line for accreditation in order to collect your pass, a copy of which will be taken for our records. You will be asked to sign for your pass on receipt. Collection and signature will confirm your agreement to the media tournament terms and conditions.

LOST / STOLEN / FORGOTTEN ACCREDITATION PASSESAny lost or stolen accreditation pass represents a potential compromise to tournament security. It is therefore essential that every effort is made to look after passes. A lost or stolen pass should be immediately reported to the nearest police station (a police report will be required), to any operational accreditation centre, via mail to [email protected] or by calling the tournament accreditation manager Kaunain Merchant on +94 774 338 327. A full police investigation will be undertaken prior to any decision being made to re-issue the pass and this is likely to cause a delay. If a pass has been left at a hotel or other local venue, the accreditee will be required to return to the location to retrieve it.

MEDIA TICKETING

ACCESS TO VENUES: MEDIA MATCH TICKET ALLOCATIONA media accreditation pass itself does not automatically entitle the holder to a seat in the press box or a photographic position. It is possible there will be a need to ticket some or all of the matches during the tournament. All match ticket requests made by individual journalists, photographers and non-rights-holding broadcasters are collated and ranked in accordance with the pre-agreed priority order. This order is determined by the ICC, which has ultimate control over the process.

All media attending the tournament are required to adhere to the tournament media terms and conditions. These can be found in the media section of the event website at icc-cricket.com.

There are two match-specific media ticket priority orders; one for determining the allocation of press seats in press boxes and overflow seating areas, and another for determining the allocation of photographic positions.

The priority order for media match ticketing can be found in the media section of the event website at www.icc-cricket.com.

MEDIA TICKETING

PRESS BOX, MEDIA CENTRE, OVERFLOW SEATING ALLOCATIONSSpace is limited at each venue due to high demand, so please be aware that your match/press box and photography position request is not necessarily a guarantee that the ICC will be able to accommodate all your requests.

A waiting list will operate and media who do not take up a position they have requested in a press box or overflow seat 30 minutes before the scheduled start of play may lose their allocation.

For information regarding photographer position allocation and non-rights holders, please go to the online media centre at www.worldt20media.com.

Code of Conduct Please note that photographers are required to agree to the code of conduct for the tournament as well as the tournament media terms and conditions. For full details, please refer to the media section of the official event site at www.icc-cricket.com

Photographers should adhere to the requests of security personnel, tournament officials and venue staff at all times.

Waiting ListsAccredited journalists and photographers who are not allocated press-box seat or position for a match due to excess demand will be placed on a waiting list. Press-box and photographer positions not collected within the specified time will then be re-allocated to the waiting list.

No ShowsJournalists and photographers who have requested and been allocated to a match-day or photo position and who subsequently fail to collect that ticket, or fail to report their cancellation before the deadline without good reason, may be penalised and could be placed at the bottom of the priority order for the next match. Multiple no-shows without prior warning may result in further match requests being suspended for the individual and organisation. Failure to attend two match days, which have been requested by an individual, may result in the withdrawal of accreditation.

Applications for Semi-Finals and Final Accreditation for press box positions/photo positions at the semi-finals and the final can only be made after the results are obtained from the matches played on 2 October 2012. Requests for these positions must be made via the online accreditation system. Media will need to log in using the username and password account details to select the positions required. Any changes to requests must be made to [email protected] by 1200 (noon) the day prior to the match.

CITY INFORMATION

COLOMBO

4.13

Colombo is the capital city of Sri Lanka, located on the south-west coast of the island. The city is a beehive of commotion, a vibrant mixture of commercial activity and historical beauty. Frenetic traffic fills the main Galle Road, and the city bustles with colonial style museums, restaurants, sidewalk cafes, markets, beaches and greenery. The lush greenery of Sri Lanka’s countryside spills over to Colombo, as evidenced by Galle Face Green Promenade and the Colombo Zoological Gardens. The Promenade, which stretches across 13 acres, presents a spectacular view between Galle Road and the Indian Ocean. The Gardens are home to a variety of animals, birds and reptiles from all over the world.

Colombo offers a range of accommodation options, from budget to five star hotels. The city also offers a huge range of restaurants with a wide range of food.

R PREMADASA INTERNATIONAL CRICKET STADIUM

Stadium AddressMaligawatte, Colombo, Sri Lanka

The 28,000-seater R. Premadasa International Stadium was established in 1986. Originally called the Khettarama Cricket Stadium, it was renamed in 1994 after the late Sri Lankan president Ranasinghe Premadasa. This is Sri Lanka’s biggest stadium and was built on swampland previously used by monks ferrying across to the Khettarama temple, adjacent to the stadium.

The venue hosted its first official match with an ODI between Sri Lanka and New Zealand in April 1986. The first Test was played between Sri Lanka and Australia in September 1992.

One of four Test grounds in Colombo, the ground is best remembered for being the venue where Sri Lanka recorded the highest Test total in history – 952 for 6 declared against India in 1997, with Sanath Jayasuriya (340) and Roshan Mahanama (225) contributing 576 for the second wicket, the highest partnership for any wicket in Test cricket.

KANDY

4.17

Pallekele’s cricket stadium is located about half an hour from the city of Kandy. The original name of Kandy is Maha Nuvara; Kandy is its English name, which means ‘capital’. Built in 1357, Kandy is the cultural capital of Sri Lanka, and is also the last royal capital.

The city boasts a vast array of cultural and religious attractions, particularly temples and shrines. The Temple of Tooth, constructed in the 16th century, is the most important place of worship for Buddhism in Sri Lanka. There are three major Hindu shrines located close to the Temple of Tooth where Lord Vishnu, Lord Natha and Goddess Patthini sit.

Historically significant sites include the Old Royal Palace, the Royal Botanical Gardens, and the Embekke Temples, which date back to the 14th century.

Kandy offers a range of accommodation options, from budget to five star hotels. A variety of local and international restaurants are located around the city and in all leading hotels.

Places of worship, such as churches, gurdwaras, mosques, synagogues and temples can be found in many areas of the city.

CITY INFORMATION

HAMBANTOTA

4.21

Hambantota is a picturesque coastal town located in the southern part of Sri Lanka. It is famous for wildlife, historical sites and a spectacular 150 kilometre stretch of sandy beach. The city was badly hit by the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, and is continuing to undergo major development and changes.

The Hambantota district borders the sacred city of Kataragama and the Udawalawe national park. It offers nature-lovers a multiplicity of sites and activities to enjoy. Mountain climbing, trekking, cycling, scuba diving and safaris are some of the activities a tourist can undertake to enjoy the local flora and fauna. Yala National Park is believed to contain the highest concentration of leopards in the world, and Bundala is a sanctuary recognized by the international Ramsar Convention on wetlands. Yala, Bundala and Kumana Parks lie at the tip of a migratory route for birds, and play host to vast flocks of water and forest birds from August to March each year.

Hambantota offers a few star class hotels, though plenty of bungalows-turned-motels are available. It is necessary to book accommodation early when visiting Hambanota.

The city has many street restaurants, which mainly serve local spicy dishes and popular Chinese dishes, while hotels provide a variety of local and international flavors.

Check with your hotel reception for local places of worship.

GALLE

4.25

Often referred to as ‘the Walled City’, Galle was founded by the Portugese in the sixteenth century. Located on the south-west tip of the island, the city has been recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage site.

The city has stood through colonial periods of Portuguese, Dutch and British, with its famous fortifications built by the Dutch, primarily in the seventeenth century.

The city boasts an array of historically and religiously significant sites, with colonial mansions, the oldest Protestant church in Sri Lanka, and the commanding Galle Fort overlooking the cricket stadium and the ocean. Unawatuna Bay provides safe swimming and snorkeling, protected as it is by a reef.

Galle is also well-known for its range of tempting souvenirs, particularly handmade Galle lace and gemstones.

Galle offers a range of star class and budget hotels located close to the venue. Local restaurants offer a variety of local dishes, while hotels serve popular international dishes.

Places of worship, such as churches, gurdwaras, mosques, synagogues and temples can be found in many areas of the city, so check with your hotel reception or your tuk tuk driver.

GALLE INTERNATIONAL STADIUM

Stadium AddressGalle, Sri Lanka

Known previously as the Esplanade, Galle International Stadium is situated near Galle Fort, with the Indian Ocean visible on both sides of the ground. It was one of the most picturesque stadiums in the world before it was completely destroyed by a tsunami in 2004. For a time, the future of the venue was in some doubt, but international support from such luminaries as Ian Botham and Shane Warne (who had taken his 500th Test wicket on the ground earlier that year) led to a pledge to rebuild the ground from scratch. After being rebuilt, the ground reopened for the Third Test of England’s tour of Sri Lanka in October 2007.

The first Test match played at the stadium was between Sri Lanka and New Zealand in June 1998.

Until the disaster, Galle had been something of a Sri Lankan stronghold, with six wins and two defeats in 11 matches, the majority of these engineered by Muttiah Muralitharan, who had taken 87 wickets in those games.

PEPSI ICC DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMMEThe Pepsi ICC Development Programme plays a key role in the ICC’s strategic vision of building a bigger, better global game.

Within the 95 Associate and Affiliate Members (AMs), over 750,000 people are now participating in formal cricket activities and leagues. With the support of the Development Programme, it is the ICC’s objective for this number to reach over 1.5 million by 2015.

A further objective of the Development Programme is to assist improving the performance standards of the top AMs. This is achieved through the dedicated ICC High Performance Programme (HPP). Ireland and Afghanistan, along with The Netherlands, Scotland, Canada and Kenya, have received assistance through the HPP is recent years.

The Development Programme is managed from the ICC Headquarters in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. The ICC Global Development Manager is Tim Anderson.

For more information about the Pepsi ICC Development Programme, please visit www.icc-cricket.com.

ROOM TO READThe ICC piloted a partnership with Room to Read at the ICC Cricket World Cup 2011, and the success of this initiative has convinced both parties extend their relationship through to 2015.

The long-term partnership aims to promote literacy and gender equality in education throughout Asia and Africa through campaigning, awareness-raising and tactical fundraising.

The partnerships’ three global champions are Virat Kohli, Angelo Mathews and Shane Watson.

This year, the partnership has seen the opening of legacy libraries from the ICC Cricket World Cup 2011 in Bangladesh, India and Sri Lanka.

During the ICC World Twenty20 Sri Lanka 2012, the ICC and Room to Read continue their positive work with the development of local language cricket books to promote literacy, the first of which features local star Angelo Mathews. This book – Little Angelo’s Big Day Out - is available in both Sinhalese and Tamil and will be distributed to youngsters throughout Sri Lanka as part of the ICC World Twenty20’s local legacy.

The ICC’s broadcast partner, ESPN Star Sports, will also be producing a Room to Read public service announcement for the WT20 that will be shown on big screens during the tournament and on television screens around the world.

MURALI HARMONY CUPAs part of its commitment to the local community in Sri Lanka, the ICC is supporting the Murali Harmony Cup, a peace-building initiative that brings together young Sri Lankans from across the island. The Murali Harmony Cup is a Twenty20 tournament that is being played to celebrate cricket, promote peace in regions affected by civil war, and leave behind a positive social legacy.

To be played over six days at Jaffna, Kilinochchi, Mankulam, Vavuniya and Oddusuddan, the event features 12 school boys’ teams and eight women’s teams, mirroring the ICC World Twenty20 format.

The competing teams come from across towns and villages in north-east Sri Lanka, the inspirational ‘Cricket Village’ built in Seenigama after the 2004 tsunami, and host cities of the ICC World Twenty20 2012.

Players from the Murali Harmony Cup will get an opportunity to train with champion cricketers during the ICC World Twenty20 team training sessions, and the ICC will upgrade the sporting infrastructure of the host schools.

The Murali Harmony Cup is endorsed by Sri Lanka legend Muttiah Muralidaran and supported by current greats Mahela Jayewardena and Kumar Sangakkara. Also involved are the Foundation of Goodness, Think Wise, Room to Read and the Sri Lanka Army.

In 2012 the Murali Harmony Cup is also being supported by Emirates. The ICC partner will be bringing the winning youngsters to Colombo to watch the ICC World Twenty20 semi-finals, and sending some of the top-performing players on a tour to Singapore.

Several of the participating teams at the WT20 will also interact with the youngsters during specially-arranged training sessions.

For more information about the Murali Cup, please visit www.themuralicup.com.

THINK WISEThe ICC’s Think Wise partnership with UNAIDS and UNICEF has been raising awareness and reducing stigma around HIV and AIDS since 2003.

By providing exposure at major events and involving elite players, Think Wise campaigns have been credited with contributing to reduced levels of stigma and greater levels of awareness in Africa, Asia and the Caribbean.

During the ICC World Twenty20 Sri Lanka 2012, players from South Africa and the West Indies will undertake specific awareness-raising activities and a public service announcement featuring Kumar Sangakkara and Virender Sehwag will be screened at tournament matches.

In keeping with a custom that began in 2004, players from the teams taking part in the men’s and women’s semi-finals will wear red ribbons as a sign of solidarity for people living with HIV and AIDS.

The umpires and referees will also sport the Think Wise logo on their shirt sleeves.
