EXECUTIVE SUMMARY __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ This year marked a different type of year for the Multicultural Center for the first time it was all virtual. The Multicultural Center’s (MC) services and programming went virtual, due to COVID-19 and the campus shut down. During this digital pivot, we were able to continue to provide programming, education and opportunity for our students and the campus community. Although, many of our signature programs took on a different look and feel our constituents remained faithful and supportive. During this time of a virtual Center, we were able to provide over 98 programs, with approximately 5,561 in attendance virtually. We were able to stay connected to students, staff and faculty through various streams of technology and platforms as well as through our website. We experienced over 16,788 visits and 37,215 views on our interactive website. As we experienced a new normal of operating in a virtual world, we learned both positive and negative lessons. We learned that our virtual programs offered us an opportunity to reach speakers and panelist which drew large viewership. However, we lost the connection and connectivity with our students due to not having any in person events. Now, we have transitioned back to campus and will continue to offer some programming virtual and some in person, more of a hybrid model. I am proud of our AMAZING Staff who have worked tirelessly to provide support and programs for our students and constituents in multiple ways during these times. Our commitment to the university and the Multicultural Center has only grown deeper during this pandemic. Arthur Gregg Assistant Vice President/Multicultural Affairs Director/Multicultural Center

POINTS OF PRIDE __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ CULTURAL CELEBRATIONS MLK Dream Week The Multicultural Center (MC) held its Martin Luther King, Jr. Dream Week virtually. Although, it was the first virtual Dr. King, the Celebration breakfast the program was a huge success. Dr. Froswa’ Booker-Drew, speaker, author and Vice-President of Community Alliance for the State Fair of Texas was this year’s keynote speaker. Dr. Booker-Drew educated our campus on “Moving from Injustice to Justice” following the example set by Dr. King’s leadership for and other just causes. She urged viewers to not only seek education, but exercise action in uplifting the downtrodden so that all may unite for a better America. Following the breakfast, the MC partnered with the Office of Student Volunteerism to host its first-ever virtual day of service. Activities included the creation of virtual greeting cards for first responders and senior citizens, and reflections on Dr. King’s commitment to serving the “Beloved Community.” Juneteenth Week of Celebration The Multicultural Center (MC) created a weeklong celebration commemorating the Juneteenth Holiday for 2021. The MC assisted the Living Our values taskforce, Black Faculty Staff Alliance (BFSA) ERG & Office of Communications into developing a campus wide marketing plan to inform the campus of the Juneteenth holiday and variety of accompanying celebrations. Event highlights included the BFSA Juneteenth kickoff, Trivia night, Instagram Cookoff, Juneteenth Book Club, and the perennial Celebration featuring Activist Vickie Washington Nance and DJ Texas Tip. DIVERSITY EDUCATION Classroom Presentations The Multicultural Center’s Diversity Education Team provided approximately 35 virtual presentations on various topics around diversity to almost 1,200 students. We were able to transition to all virtual while maintaining the high level of quality presentations. The presentation topics offered were the following: Diversity 101, Microaggressions, Cultural Competency for student employees and Implicit Bias. We are glad to say that an average of 88% of students rated these presentations above average on our overall rating scale. Comet Cultural Conversation Series A new initiative for the Multicultural Center this year was the Comet Cultural Conversation Series. This virtual series was birthed out of the conversations that came out of the Black Lives Matters workshop held in 2020. This year’s series topic was designed to explore systemic racism and targeted the Dallas/Ft. Worth Metroplex. Each session included special guest speakers, interactive group dialogues and opportunities to learn more about the immediate area. The Center hosted 4 sessions with a total attendance of 225 students, staff, faculty, and community guest. We are proud to report that 87% of participants in attendance reported an increase in knowledge of systemic racism by attending these programs.

STUDENT SUCCESS

Student Leadership Weekends

The Multicultural Center had to pivot this year and hold all of our student leadership weekends virtually (Operation: I AM, VOICES and our new program M.O.V.E. for Asian American Pacific Islander Students). Over thirty-nine (39) students attended the Operation I Am: Black Student Leadership Weekend. This year’s theme was “Strengthening Our Community”. Over fifty-nine (59) students attended the VOICES: Hispanic Student Leadership Weekend. Over thirty-three (33) students attended our very first AAPI program M.O.V.E. Asian American Pacific Islander Student Leadership Retreat. One student quoted "I realized that I have certain ways of thinking from the environments I grew up in that aren't necessarily beneficial or could even be harmful to certain communities and learning to dismantle that started here at M.O.V.E." All programs were filled with fun and informative sessions to connect students to all aspects of academic and campus life.
