Growing to Growing to Greenness!Greenness!

The Jane Addams Memorial Tollway (formerly known as the Northwest Tollway) is 54 years old. For the early residents of Hoffman Estates, the opening of the Tollway on Aug. 20, 1958, was a reason to cheer. The Tollway would make the trip to and from the city so much faster than taking Higgins or Golf roads.

The construction of the Toll-way was a boon to developers in the area. Not only was F&S Construction building homes in the new Hoffman Estates development, but other neighboring towns, such as Rolling Meadows and Elk Grove Village, were also being built.

The area’s farmland would soon change forever; however, a way of life was coming to an end. From the cornfi elds would fi rst spring homes, then commercial development that would provide jobs and a tax base for the new communities.

The Werner farm was one of many in Schaumburg Town-ship that was torn down. It was located at Mundhank Road, just south of Higgins Road. It had 12 buildings, including a beautiful home. The Bierman farm was on the east side of Barrington Road, just north of HigginsRoad. If you get on the Tollway at Barrington Road heading to the city, you’ll drive right through their old farmstead. It had nine buildings, including a barn, henhouse, tool shed and farmhouse. They all met the bulldozer as progress on the Tollway moved forward. Other farms included the Williams, Stynaski,Krumfass and Plote farms.

A book titled, “The Illinois Department of Transpor-tation, Illinois Farmland Acquisitions for Schaumburg Township,” is located in the reference area of the Scha-umburg Township District Library. It has photos, plats, appraisals and miscellaneous

documents for those farms purchased for the Tollway development. It also has in-formation about the process that took place. Unfortu-nately, it includes nothing about the sorrow of giving up a farm that may have been in the family for generations.

The farm equipment had to be sold, as well as the live-stock and various items that a farmer might need. Many of the farmers held auctions. It wasn’t easy to say good bye. Knowing that your home was going to be destroyed made the farm families real-ize that it was truly coming to an end.

Many of the farmers moved farther west. Some continued farming, while othersmoved to a city life in Elgin,Palatine, Dundee or Roselle.

Air Pollution Action Daysand Illinois EnviroFlash

Air quality affects how we live and breathe. Like the weather, it can change from day to day. The Air Quality Index (AQI) is a color-coded system that classifi es air quality from “Good” to “Hazardous.” Air Pollution Action Day alerts are is-sued when air quality levels over a large area are expected to reach the category “Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups” – orange on the AQI – for multiple days.

Illinois EnviroFlash is an online tool that sends air quality forecasts and Air Pollution Action Day alerts directly to a subscriber’s e-mail inbox. The program is a partnership between the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and U.S. EPA. You can sign up for e-mail noti-fi cations at illinois.envirofl ash.info.

Each resident can take small steps to participate in improving our Village’s air quality. Examples include driv-ing less and biking more, using low volatile organic compounds (VOC) cleaning products and paints, and mowing the lawn in the evening. A message from Mayor McLeodWith the kids back in school and schedules fi lling up, September can be the start of a very busy time for many families in Hoffman Estates. I wanted to let you know about a few excellent events this month that are worth add-ing to your calendar.

On Saturday, Sept. 8, our Arts Commission will host their fi nal outdoor event of the season at the Virginia Mary Hay-ter Village Green – the annual Platzkonzert Germanfest. Over the past few years, Platzkonzert has become a family favorite in the Village. It features a variety of food, includ-ing brats, sauerkraut and German beer, German music and dancers, and plenty of fun activities for all ages throughout the day. The event begins at 11 a.m., and ends at 3 p.m.

As always, the Village will honor the victims of theSept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks with our Ceremony of Remembrance. The observance will take place at the Vil-lage Hall starting at 5 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 11, and will feature guest speakers, music and light refreshments.

Later in September, we will host a Community Respite Night for families who have children with special needs. Taking place on Friday, Sept. 28, from 5:30 p.m. to8:30 p.m. at the Village Hall, the goal of the evening is to provide fun, supervised activities for special needs chil-dren and their siblings, while parents take the evening off. Organized by our Commission for Disabled Citizens, our recurring Community Respite Nights are a wonderful way to both help families and bring joy to others.

Our Village has been fortunate to have a strong core of volunteers who generously donate their time to organize fantastic events throughout the year. If you are interested in volunteering to serve on one of our boards and commis-sions, contact Sue Lessen at 847-781-2606, or by e-mail at [email protected]. A complete list of volunteer boards and commissions can be found online at www.hoffmanestates.org.

As always, I welcome your feedback and concerns. Please don’t hesitate to contact me directly at 847-781-2604, or by e-mail at [email protected].

Fire Department reminds residents to grill safelyThis summer, there were two sepa-rate fi res in Hoffman Estates caused by improper disposal of hot charcoal from barbecue grills. These fi res have caused tens of thousands of dollars in damage. In both cases, the fi res were preventable.

The Hoffman Estates Fire Depart-ment would like to remind you that barbecue grills should be properly inspected and cleaned prior to use. In 2011, gas and charcoal grills caused 3,400 structure fi res and 4,900 outdoor fi res.

The Hoffman Estates Fire Prevention Bureau provides the following sug-gestions for grilling safety:

• Be sure to properly dispose of hot coals by placing them in a metal container

• Before using the grill, check the con-nection between the propane tank and fuel line

• Do not wear loose clothing near the grill

• Never grill indoors – carbon monoxide could be produced

• Never use gasoline to start charcoal grills

• Make sure to use lighter fl uid safely and prudently

• Comply with any apartment or con-dominium complex rules for grills on balconies

Hoffman Estates Citizen • September 2012

Drivers are reminded that the use of cell phones is restricted in school and construc-tion zones.

For drivers traveling on area roadways, it is a common occurrence: you observe another driver in violation of the Illinois law that prohibits drivers from talking on cell phones in school and construction zones. In an effort to continue to educate area drivers, the Hoffman Estates Police Department is issuing a reminder about this prohibition, which has been in effect since Jan. 1, 2010. It all comes down to safety, and this law is meant to protect drivers, children and con-struction workers from tragic accidents.

When driving in a school or construction zone in Illinois, a driver should devote their full attention to the task of driving, not talking on a cell phone. The law does, how-

ever, provide three exceptions. A driver is permitted to talk on a cell phone in a school or construction zone if:

• The driver is calling 9-1-1 to report an emer-gency situation

• The driver has the cell phone on speaker phone or is using a Bluetooth device, and is not holding the phone

• The driver is a law enforcement offi cer, an emergency vehicle operator, or a construction or maintenance worker, and is using the phone in the course of performing his or her duties

Remember: texting or e-mailing while driv-ing is illegal on any roadway in Illinois.

The Police Department will be conduct-ing enforcement at area schools. To report any violations of this law, call 9-1-1 for an offi cer to respond.
