James has been a golf professional at all levels for nearly 30 years. He has held positions as General Manager, Golf Professional, Marketing Expert, Consultant and Business Professional. James leads our professional team and has developed a comprehensive golf program. Whether you are just starting to play, are an experienced golfer looking for a tune up or competitive player seeking an all-encompassing golf life style... his program is designed to keep your goals in mind.

Welcome to 2022, and Cardinal Creek Golf Club at Scott Air Force Base. We

appreciate your business and are honored to have your continued support of

our club and programs. Last year was a historic year for so many reasons. Not

only has Covid continued to affect all of us in so many ways, we are dealing with

a troubled economy, increase in wages, supply chain issues, high fuel prices,

stimulus, no stimulus, employment, unemployment, vaccines, one shot, two

shots, three shots, go! Where does the stress end and fun begin? We hope the

answer is with us, here at Cardinal Creek Golf Club.

Last year, a record 25,240 people played golf, fling golf and foot golf at our

course. We reached our goals, and most importantly were able to re-invest in

your golf course. After 7 years of planning, pushing, pulling and twisting, we

completed a full renovation of the sand bunkers and the surrounding drainage

complexes. If you have seen the finished project you already understand, but those that have not will see that the transformation of

the course is unbelievable. My bias aside, I feel the end result is simply incredible. We started with 30 sand bunker complexes. Very

few were playable 5 years ago and none were playable just 2 years ago. The three phase project removed 17 sand bunkers, enhanced

mounding, fairway extensions, and bail out areas were added. Then this last summer the largest phase took remaining sand bunker

complexes and extensions of those and completely took our course to resort quality with modern designed sand bunkers and

complete drainage of several more areas. The grow is under way, our plans are to re-open the areas completely for public play by

Memorial Day weekend of this year. Our future is now focused on more drainage in troubled areas and the beautification of our golf

course. We are now definitely the "Showcase" golf course of Air Mobility Command.

The golf course was not the only improvement completed at Cardinal Creek last year. A late season flood in 2020 created extensive

damage to our clubhouse and cart barn, as well as, the surrounding areas. All of which have been repaired, resided and signage

replaced.

For 2022, new sliding walls in the Café are already in the works. This enhancement will allow smaller private groups to utilize

portions of our Café during the daytime hours, that won't affect the daily access to the "Best Burger" on base. We also hope to

complete repairs to our upstairs meeting room that will allow greater audio visual and a more accommodating meeting space.

We encourage you to review and mark your calendars as we added to our in-house events and tournaments scheduled for this

year. We have overhauled our golf lesson programs , and are offering golf lessons for any level of golfer, adult or junior. Maybe a

sand lesson is in your future.

"Golf is a good walk spoiled" - Mark Twain. It is our pleasure to spoil your days on the course. Welcome back to another season at

"your" Cardinal Creek Golf Course at Scott Air Force Base.

Who influenced you to play golf? It is an inter-esting question for most people and there are as many answers as there are bogey’s

during my rounds. I am a volunteer coach for the McKendree women’s golf team and asked them the same question often. Most times I hear dad took me out and I was hooked. One said an older sister played, and I played along. I am not sure where the moms were but golf doesn’t seem to have been as popular with women as it was with men twenty years ago.

In my case, it was my dad. He played and when he wanted to go to the driving range, we all went, dad, mom, my sister, and I. Again, mom wasn’t interested in playing (she probably relished the quiet, LOL) and, as I recall, she sat in the car and worked the cross-word puzzle from the daily newspaper. My sister and I were not that easy. We wanted to do whatever dad did. So he put a driver in our hands, gave us some golf balls, and told us not to hit each other with the club.

It isn’t necessarily recommended that young golfers start out with a driver but what did my dad know about that. I often asked dad why he didn’t work more on my

short game. He said I never wanted to. Hmmmm….that would have been the first time I didn’t do what he wanted me to do. Probably has a lot to do with him wanting my sister and I to be entertained so he could hone his game.

He would occasionally come over to see how we were doing and provide some pointers but, basically let us have fun and learn to love golf. He was taking lessons from the local PGA Professional and occasionally the Pro would wander over and give us a quick tip to keep us busy. Smart men both as they knew if we were content, dad could work on his game.

Dad was an electrical engineer by trade but was also handy with the hammer and saw. He built a heated stall for the driv-ing range so people could hit balls in the winter. I suspect this was self-serving, we also suspect it got built in trade for HIS lessons (no indoor simulators in those days).

I have great memories of being on the course with dad and can remember things dad would say. “Keep it in the short grass” was a favorite. He also often quoted Confucius, “Look up, see bad shot.” Boy, isn’t that the truth!!! How many times have you reminded yourself or someone to keep their head down?

WHO INFLUENCEDYOU TO PLAY

by Shirley BaughCCGC Team Member

" In my case, it was my dad. "

10

I remember walking the course with him. “Golf: A good walk spoiled,” Even have memories of carrying the golf bag as I got older. Carts weren’t an option then, at least for dad and I.

I also remember standing in the backyard with my baseball ball glove on as he chipped golf balls my way, (I may have had a case for something, LOL) as I worked on catching and he worked on chipping. Mom went in the house. She had no desire to see how that would turn out. The good news, no black eyes.

One time my dad was swinging a club in the living room and hit the leg of the coffee table. He broke the leg in half, table fell over, and everything on it hit the hardwood floor. Dad was in trouble! My sister and I thought it was hilarious. Mom had other thoughts, Dad didn’t play any golf for a bit.

Have you ever encouraged someone to take up the game of golf? Mentoring someone into the game cre-ates a lifetime of memories during years of playing to-gether. We know people who are successfully playing golf into their 80’s and 90’s. Think of the quality time in a golf cart with your golf partner! Think of all the stories, the laughs, and the fun those times provide.

Who can you introduce into the game? Your son, your daughter, your grandchildren. My sons say that my dad, their grandpa, was instrumental in getting them into the game. They both have their favorite stories about being on the course with him.

My nephew has one of my dad’s putters, a Ping, made when putters were the only club Ping made. I have one of dad’s putters too. It sits in the corner of the living room and I occasionally use it to practice put-ting into dad’s old green electric ball return. We spent many hours practicing our putting in the living room when I was a kid.

The golf course is a perfect place to spend some qual-ity time with your kids or grandkids. They will talk about it long after you are gone. And what can you do as a family on vacation? Yep, you can all play golf!

How do you get your children or grandchildren in-terested? I have grandchildren so I am interested in the answer to that question too. I asked around to some local coaches and golf instructors. Buy them the plastic clubs and oversized balls. Let them swing away in the back yard. Go play miniature golf! Take

them on the course or to the driving range with you.

Have you heard of Foot Golf and Fling Golf? What a game changer! Foot Golf is a cross between soccer and golf. Players use a soccer ball on a specially de-signed course. You can play along side your kids as they play golf with soccer balls. It takes 10 minutes to learn and the next step, you guessed it, time on the driving range with a golf club. Fling Golf is a cross between lacrosse and golf. Players atually fling the golf ball with a lacrosse modeled fling stick. It takes 10 minutes to learn and the next step, you guessed it, time on the driving range with a golf club.

What is the payoff for kids that play golf? Think col-lege! Think Scholarships! Almost all Colleges, Uni-versities and JR Colleges offer men’s and women’s golf teams and are looking for players. It is one more option your student has to get involved in an activity when they are in high school and in college. Statistics show that students do better in school when they are involved in extracurricular activities, especially if it teaches life lessons. In what other sport does a play-er call a penalty on themselves? Only in golf do we see this type of integrity, honesty and sportsmanship.

Put a club in a young person’s hand. Start now. It is about making memories, it is about fun and about cre-ating a love for a sport. Golf can be played through-out one’s life. My dad passed away 10 years ago but his impact on me, my sons, and my nephew’s lives on through our golf games!

Time to hit the course, I think I can beat dad today!

" Statistics show that students do better in school when they are in-volved in extracurricular activities, especially if it teaches life lessons. "

CRUISES COVID SPAIN & ITALYby Rowena Johnson- Cardinal Creek Cafe -

My husband, Kevin, and I love to travel. Covid restrictions have kept us close to home recently, but in 2021 we once again took to the air and sea for international travel. Our recent adventure was incredible and worth the hassles required. Viva La Rambla, Barcelona! Barcelona is the "Cosmopolitan capital of Spain's Catalonia region." It is well known for its art, architecture, food and its most famous street, La Rambla! Barcelona was the port of call for our cruise of the Mediterranean, with scheduled visits to Spain (Palma De Mallorca and the Balearic Islands), France (Marseille), and finally Italy (Pisa, Rome and Naples). Unfortunately, due to current Covid restrictions and limita-tions, France was excluded. Next time!

The current Covid restrictions, limitations and requirements for overseas travel was a challenge. We were re-quired to validate and clear each entity separately - airline, cruise line, and countries visited (Spain & Italy). Each required roughly the same information but four different platforms of input. We equally managed and matched each request with due diligence and checklist tracking. I recommend, always make a list, and prioritize so nothing is missed, also to ensure critical items are completed before due dates.

Kevin and I arrived in Barcelona two days prior to our cruise departure. We needed to first partake and enjoy Bar-celona's art, architecture, food, and culture. And partake we did! The weather was low 70's and sunny! We stayed in a hotel right on La Rambla street. The Hotel Oriente Atriam has great acccomodations, very helpful and kind staff, breakfast and Wi-Fi. When traveling, especially abroad, I recommend when using public Wi-Fi access points, to use a VPN (Virtual Private Network) on your device(s). It ensures your device(s) and your personal information is not compromised.

Our foodie adventure was highlighted by the visit to the "Mercado del al Boqueria," simply the La Boqueria. La Bo-queria is the most famous market in Barcelona, and located in the center of La Rambla. What better place to enjoy the occasional breakfast, lunch and dinner (get there early - small eateries fill fast). If you like paella (spanish rice mixed with saffron, meats, seafood & veggies) or you've never experienced it, this is the place to go! No trip to La Boqueria would be complete without sampling the much coveted "Jamon Iberico," dried-cured ham (like prosciutto), having a smooth texture and rich, savory taste. La Boqueria is always good eats, great atmosphere, and a great synergy of food and flavors.

By the time two days had passed, we had seen Gothic Quarter, La Sagrada Familia, Placa de Catalunya, Park Guell, Cathedral Barcelona, Montjuic, Columbus Monument, Barcelona Beach, Picasso's Museum and Monserrat. This ar-ticle hasn't enough space to detail all our visits, however, at your leisure please google each for your enjoyment.

Finally, the day of the cruise, our first great stop was in Palma de Mallorca. It's a resort city with landmarks show-casing its gothic history, begun in the 13th Century (124 BC). Sites include Royal Palace of La Almundaina, Cathe-dral-Basilica de Santa Maria, Castel de Beliver, and so much more. The narrow streets and markets are truly a site to see and enjoy. There is a lot of walking, so we recommend hop on/hop off bus tours, which are reasonably priced.

Upon arrival in Italy, Pisa was our first stop. For most, if not all, Mediterranean food and wine is a joy to the palate. No visit to Pisa is complete without seeing the Piazza del Duomo, Cattedrale di Pisa, and of course the Leaning Tow-er of Pisa. Tourists from all over desire the photo of holding up or pushing up this tower, and we were no exception.

Next stop, Rome. The Colosseum, Pantheon, The Trevi Fountain, Vatican City, St. Peter's Basilica, Sistine Chapel and more were on our list, however, the restrictions did not allow entry. It was still a beautiful sight to see, outside.

Our last stop before returning to Barcelona was Naples, Italy. Located on the Bay of Naples and near Mt. Vesuvius, it has one of the most beautiful seaside views. We took it all in with Mt. Vesuvius in the background. Other sites near were Castel Nuovo, Royal Palace of Naples, Ovo Castle and less I forget, the Duomo di San Gennaro, with its many frescos (wall & ceiling paintings). We loved Naples, as many tourists do, with its multi-colored buildings, romantic overlooks, and of course the dining was delicious. As our cruise travel was coming to an end, we returned to the ship for our journey back to Barcelona.

Not to go unmentioned, we were afforded several Covid tests prior to boarding by cruise medical personnel, and again just before deporting into Italy, and finally at the very end of the cruise deporting back to Spain. The last test was for travelers back to their country. The U.S. required a test, at least 72 hours prior, which was much needed for approval to return to the good ol' USA. Traveling to other countries is a great experience, but our heart is always at home. ~ CIAO!

· Of The Thousands of Golf Holes In The World - Only A Handful Stand Out ·

Looking through the various definitions of the GAME of golf, I settled on the one from the Merriam-Webster Dictionary. It says,

>TEE T IMES Yes, Our Cardinal Creek Golf Course utilizes tee times for 100% of the times we’re open. You can book easily on-line at www.375fss.com/golf or you can give us a call at 618-256-2385 x 1 during our normal business hours. It is always best to make a tee time for twosome, threesome and foursomes. We don’t generally make a tee time for a single player but are happy to add you to a two or threesome reservations. We also suggest singles just show up and Pro Shop team will work our magic and get you out on the course quickly.

>ON TIME Speaking of TEE TIMES, let’s go over what that means. If you have that coveted 9:00 am weekend tee time, to us that means actual-ly being out on the first tee hitting your first drive of the day at that time, NOT walking into the shop at 9:00 am. We recommend arriving at least 15 minutes early to ensure smooth transition from check in to golf cart to first tee. If you are delayed, most times, NOT EV-ERY TIME, but most of the time our Pro Shop magicians can provide some fancy hocus po-cus and get you and your group out on the golf course close to your tee time. If we can’t I can guarantee you we will do our best.

>GAMES Whether you and your group are playing Bingo/Bango/Bongo, Wolf, Six-Six-Six, Four-some (alternate shot), Vegas, Foursomes (best ball), Skins, Nassau, Rabbit, etc., get ev-erything squared away before that first ball is hit on the 1st tee-and definitely BEFORE your tee time. Are you playing GOLF or bumping the ball up. If bumping up, be clear, are you improving your lie a few inches, or implying the “Judge Smails” method of “Winter Rules.” If there are any rules issues, our staff is fairly capable and can answer some ba-sic golf rules questions, but we prefer to not be thrown into the middle of any individual game officiating.

>BE NICE In the immortal words of Dalton… “Be Nice.” We are sorry that for whatever reason you couldn’t get here 15 minutes early and will try our best to get you on the golf course quickly, but if you come guns a blazing, our magical special skills get tested. Here’s a little secret my Pro Shop colleagues don’t want me to let out, so please don’t tell anyone. We will jump through hoops, apologize to groups after yours, we will work our MAGIC to get you and your group on the golf course so please “Be Nice."

>GOLF CARTSIt has been said by someone way more famous than James, our fearless leader, that “Golf is a good walk spoiled." Many golfers love to walk and can get plenty of the exercise that 9 or 18 holes can give. However, if you’re older, recovering from a surgical procedure, have only one good leg, or just feel like riding, we have a cart for you. We ask that golf carts should NEVER be driven on tee boxes OR within 30 yards of a green. Note that just because you see another player like a one-legged pirate (referring to myself, folks) driving up close to a tee box or green isn’t a green light for you to do it. There’s generally a medical exemption or ADA (Americans with Disability Act) accommodation being utilized to help that particular person enjoy their GAME. We ask that you also note that there are two (2) seats in our golf cart. We rent each seat in a cart. EACH PLAYER has to pay for their SEAT. Driving or riding makes no difference. Our carts all go about 9 mph. If you’re looking for something faster, head west to World Wide Technologies racetrack where you may be able to drive as fast as you like.

Golf - a game in which a player using special clubs attempts to sink a ball, with as few strokes as possible, into each of 9 or 18 successive holes on a course.

"

"Now as I go through this writing, I want to emphasize the word

GAME. Here at Cardinal Creek Golf Course, located on Scott Air Force Base, we have one of the best layouts-and I dare say- best values of any course in the St. Louis region. There are several facets of this GAME we all love or hate-some-times both simultaneously-that some of us have forgot. This ultimately takes away from the fun this GAME provides each player. Going through some of these facets will hopefully draw attention to the fact that how you approach your GAME direct-ly/indirectly impacts everyone else’s enjoyment of this GAME. Let’s run through some of these facets to help us all have a more enjoyable GAME.

18

Following simple steps will enhance YOUR enjoy-ment of this GAME we love to hate-or hate to love! None of us out here playing Cardinal Creek are do it to earn a living playing golf. We’re all out here to get better, have fun, make new friends, and may-be-just maybe-hit that shot of a lifetime!

>CART RULESOur carts are more than adequate to get you around for 9 or 18 holes. Although at times we have to suspend our normal 90 degree rule due to wet conditions. This is due to abnormal rain amounts that mandate we keep carts on the paved cart paths known as “CART PATH ONLY.” We don’t do this to inconvenience players or to see who won’t play. (We already know who won’t play when we put Cart Path Only) We do it for the safety of our customers and to protect our course that we work so diligently to improve. You would be surprised how much damage one cart can do by violating this rule. Our Pro Shop staff are all golfers ourselves and want our course to be protected. So we appreciate your understanding of why this rule is so important to us and for you to follow.

>CONDI T IONSWe ask your help in keeping our course in GREAT shape. We actually look at it as your responsibility! Start by replacing your divots. This will help our fairways and driving range repair itself more quickly rather than leaving a scar to heal itself. Repair your ball marks on greens. If everyone would simply adopt a “fix one ball mark plus 2 others” it would guarantee that an unrepaired ball mark won’t be the one you have to putt through the next time. Many years ago on a local radio station, they played a segment every Thursday morning called “Golf tips from Don, the Legend." They are hilarious and can be found on YouTube, I must warn you Don loved his Bloody Mary’s and evidently enjoyed a couple before each tip so his language could be considered not so PG, however he did a great segment on repairing divots and ball marks that is really spot on.

>BEHAVIORThere are times when Pro Shop staff have had to come out on the course to mediate disputes because a golfer feels that they were wronged on purpose by another golfer. The % of players who do this type of thing on purpose is so low only a math teacher would understand it. If everyone would have the philosophy that other players are playing GREAT that day and, say hits a career shot that maybe even hits a cart path and goes even farther than any BK expected that gets into your group, assume they DIDN’T do it on purpose and accept their apology. If it happens again, remember most of us are adults and this situation should be handled like adults. Remember the two ears, one mouth philosophy. Hear one out before responding and remember, we all hit that wind aided, cart path careen-ing, career shot every now and then. Be happy for the person. If there is ever a dispute on course that adults can’t solve peacefully and positively, call the Pro Shop, we will again use our magical skills to offer alternative positive outcomes in most cases.

>PLAY READY GOLFIf everyone plays their own ball and plays ready golf-meaning to hit when it’s your turn then safely advance forward to where your shot ended up and be ready to play again.

>LOST BALLThere are times like looking for a lost ball (3 minutes once looking has commenced) where you might get behind. We’ve all been there and we don’t like losing golf balls but keep it to 3 minutes.

>AHEAD OF YOUThe best measure of proper POP is that you keep the group IN FRONT of you with-in two golf shots of your group. If every-one uses this guideline we will certainly get you through the course in an enjoy-able POP.

>ONE BALLSpeaking of playing your own ball, it’s important to know that your pace of play impacts everyone behind you and playing more than one ball slows YOUR prog-ress and those behind you. Obviously if you’re the only group around, then you can take as long as you’d like. However, being alone on our course is becoming more rare as people discover what a gem Cardinal Creek is! So please be aware of those around you and remain in position.

>PACE OF PLAY (POP)As more and more people play and watch golf, POP has become a large issue. When someone feels they need to look at every putt from all 360 degrees then misses by two feet something went wrong. Playing 9 holes should not take much longer than 2 hours to 2 ¼ hours; 18 hole between 4 and 4 ½ hours.

I have been cooking for as long as I can remember. Be it standing on a stool alongside my grandmother, or mom giving me step by step instructions over the phone, to help get the family's evening meal on the table. Being one of nine children, I suppose I was always helping to keep the tribe fed.

Here are a couple of my favorites:

Sprinkle yeast into warm water. Combine flour, sugar and salt in a separate bowl. Cut in the margarine like pie dough until mixture looks like course meal. Add the dissolved yeast, egg, and lukewarm milk. Beat until thoroughly blended. Cover and refrigerate overnight. Divide dough into 3 equal pieces. On a lightly floured board, roll one piece into a 16 inch square. Brush with melted margarine. Cut into 16, 4 inch squares. Put squares on cookie sheet. Cut each diagonally from each corner to within 1/2 inch of center. In each center, place a teaspoon of pie filling. Rotate the points to form pinwheels. Let rise about 45 minutes. Repeat with rest of dough. Bake at 350 for approximately 12 minutes. Cool, top with drizzle of powdered sugar icing, center with a cherry.

This recipe guarantees perfectly pink prime rib cooked some-where a shade under medium rare. Cook a touch longer for medium. Serves 4 adults, so adjust for larger parties and events.

Perfect Prime Rib41/211-

pounds prime rib roastcup unsalted butter, softendedtbsp. freshly ground black peppertsp. herbes de Provence Kosher salt

Place rib roast on plate and set out, this brings the roast to room temperature, about 4 hours should do it.

Preheat oven to 500 degrees. Combine butter, pepper, and herbes de Provence in a bowl; mix until well blended. Spread butter mixture evenly over entire roast. Season roast generously with kosher salt.

Roast the 4 pound prime rib in the preheated oven for 20 minutes. Turn off the oven, and leave the roast inside with the door closed. Let the roast sit in the oven for 2 hours. Remove roast from oven, slice, and serve with side of Beef Au Jus.

Cooking Notes: Cooking times will vary depending on size of prime rib roast. To calcu-late cooking time, multiply exact weight of roast by 5. Round result to nearest whole number. The rib is cooked at 500 degrees F for exactly that many minutes. Example: 6 pound roast - 6x5=30, so cooking time is 30 minutes.

This Holiday Cocktail is a singular in ingredients and tradtional Cosmopolitan. It lends itself many themes that I have utilized over the years. It can be made as individual cocktail or by the pitcher, serving all night. I also change the name to suit the holiday on hand, such as; Reindeer, Valentines, Fireworks, or Frank Costanza's Festivus Cocktail.

At “our” golf course, we seem to start every year with a raccoon problem. They eat, poop, and basically mess up our clubhouse surrounds every year. On occasion a family of raccoons will move in and live off of discarded remnants of the "cafe" cooking in our dumpsters and trash cans. We do our best to keep the area clean and closed but these critters are smart and get in somehow. Traps will be set by the base pest con-trol people in an attempt to catch and relocate the raccoons. Over the course of years and many encounters, you seem to get know each raccoon by appearance and personality. Not only what they do, but how they react and where they go. We’ve had one memorable raccoon that caused us the largest headache of all that ever visited the course. I first bumped into him when I was taking out the trash for the kitchen crew sometime in the spring a few years ago. The café dumpster is small with the lid around chest height. I lifted up the lid to dump some trash and found the raccoon sitting at the opposite end of the dumpster, just sitting, looking at me. The raccoon was a lean adolescent with a timid demeanor. Most raccoons would just sit there and stare at you with wide, serious eyes but, not this one. This raccoon hugged the wall of the dumpster in such a way that it made a pose so majestic that it allowed me time to take a picture with my smartphone to immortalize the moment. Over the course of the next few weeks this raccoon became a major terror to our staff. There were situa-tions where at night they would open the dumpster and find “Charlie” as we called him, waiting inside. On one occasion “Charlie” jumped on the shoulder on one of our team to make a run for it while she was throwing something away. It scared her so much that on the second time she had another colleague come out with her to open the lid so she can pitch the trash bag inside. “Charlie” had other ideas and sent them off screaming right back inside. To make matters worse, "Charlie" and its raccoon buddies ripped apart the trash bags and scattered garbage all over the pavement. Not just in the kitchen dumpster, but also in the trash cans surrounding the clubhouse. I had to wash out and disinfect every trash can in an attempt to keep them away, but they still stick their noses in them. It had gotten so bad that pest control was called again.

Within a week of pest control setting down traps around the clubhouse and cart barn dumpsters, raccoons were being trapped left to right. From two baby kits to a massive fur bag of a raccoon. However, super raccoon “Charlie” may have been too large to fit but was smart enough to avoid the traps. He was smart and even when pest control tried using freshly cooked cheeseburgers as bait to lure him in, nothing. For weeks “Charlie” evaded the traps and hit the dumpsters at night. Sometimes I would see him creeping around the Creek around dusk and as far as we know, he kept raiding the kitchen dumpster unimpeded. Then one day I was just passing by and caught sight of “Charlie” squeezing into the kitchen dumpster once again. The Super Raccoon had gotten too greedy this time. I grabbed whatever I could - garden bricks, bungie cords, and a random plank of wood – and pinned that lid down the best I could. We contacted pest control, we had finally got the raccoon, or so I thought. As pest control was on its way, “Charlie” wasn’t giving up. Next thing I knew, I saw a couple of tiny raccoon paws sticking out of the lid around the middle of the dumpster, and then my jaw dropped when “Charlie” started squeezing itself through the gap between the dumpster lids. There were enough trash bags in the dumpster for it to reach that high, but that’s not what surprised me. What surprised me was the fact that it was pushing up against the weighted lid of bricks. I stepped back and watched as "Charlie" managed to squeeze right between the lids like he was Raccoon Superman. It was also hot that day, which made the plastic soft from the heat. That plastic bent and warped around his frame as it squeezed its fat raccoon body through.

It would’ve gotten free had not pest control arrived in time. They wasted no time getting out a fresh cage and a pole to noose and bag the raccoon. First they had to pull “Charlie” out of the gap by noosing him and yanking him out. When they did, the plastic lid clapped back shut but remained bent where “Charlie” was. That raccoon didn’t struggle much after getting roped, but when they attempted to place him in the cage, that raccoon slipped right on out the moment the Animal Control Specialist released the rope. Like that, "Charlie" was free and rather than taking off running, the raccoon did something that all perfectly normal raccoons would never do after getting free, it started walking away. Pest Control went chasing after that raccoon. Not running, but walking right behind it with the noose pole hovered just over its back. “Charlie” led the chase, down across the lake’s edge toward the Practice Green, then down the road. Both raccoon and pest control walking at a steady pace. Then as if he knew, “Charlie” broke to a sprint at the creek and disappeared in the grass. “Charlie” never returned after that. No more midnight trash raids or sightings. As far as everyone involved was concerned, he had decided to move on elsewhere. We thank ourselves every day that we have not encountered another “Charlie” since.

YOU WILL

PLAY BETTERIf you have confidence in your game, and even if you don't, the one thing that you can be sure of is the simple act of playing more will improve your game. This especially goes for the one round a month or less type of golfer. More than that, when you play in competition your focus improves, and you now have goals when you are on the course. You think more strategically about your game and your decision making. Over time you do more of the little things well. In short, you will get better by playing more often in competition.

Whenever I think about all the years I have spent playing golf, I can't believe how differently I looked at the game after I joined a weekly league. It fundamentally changed the way I played, how I thought about my game, and how much enjoyment I get out of it. A golf league may not be for everyone, but here are 4 great reasons why you should consider joining. - JAMES MCCORMICK

YOU WILL

BUILD FRIENDSHIPSCamaraderie is one of the biggest reasons I play league golf. The time honored tradition of discussing your round with the golfers you played with and the good natured banter about both successes and failures gets better with more friends and league mates in attendance. Let's face it, the shared experience of a golf game can bring together people who otherwise would not have anything in com-mon. The camaraderie of a good golf league may be the best reason to play in one.

YOU WILL

PLAY MOREI remember my first season of league golf. I committed to getting out 10 times that season, and by the time I had finished the first few months of play I had already been out 8 times. That was 3 more times than I had played the entire year before. Why? In league play there is just more reasons to play every week. First, the competition in league play brings an added level of motivation to get out and play. Recognition from other golfers when you finish atop the leader-board is great, but what really got me out more often was all the new opportunities to play with a much larger group of people. Any time I wanted to play a round of golf, I could, thanks to my golf league.

YOU WILL

HAVE MORE FUNI love the old saying that "a bad day of golf beats a good day at the office." This is never more true than in league play. We are taught as children that competition offers the opportunity to learn and improve at whatever sport we are playing. So even if I'm losing, sometimes badly, I get much more out of the round than with just a casual game. Besides, I relish the likely abuse I'll get afterwards and if you play league golf, you will too.

Now I know what you're thinking here... Baseball Drill?! Well, believe it or not, this "baseball drill" will help you to get the feel for a thought-free, instinctive golf swing!

This is a drill I've used for years and years to help my students to coordinate the movement of the club and body. In a short space of time you'll be amazed how quickly you are able to maximize your velocity through the hitting area with a loud swish. Swinging a club base-ball style is also a terrific way to increase your clubhead speed. When you hold the club out at waist high, you will automatically seem to turn your upper body much more effectively, and the result is that you make a better coil and release - i.e. you load up your backswing and unwind with more speed and power.

T H E M A N Y W A Y S T O . . .

HIT IT FURTHER!

THE BASEBALL DRILL1 This also helps anyone with a tendency to swing on an out-to-in swing plane. Holding the club up at this angle give you a much better sense of swinging the club around your body, moving inside back to square and inside once more on the way through. Ideally for most golfers, this will help produce a draw shaped shot, one that moves right to left in the air - a far cry from the left to right slice shape that costs distance and accuracy. So use this drill to up your speed and at the same time to ge the feel for the shape and the path of your golf swing. Make swings out in front of you and lower the clubhead in stages until you are ready to strike a ball off a tee. As you simplify your mechanics, your shots will become longer, more accurate and most importantly, more consistent.

" The 'Baseball Drill' will help you to get the feel for a thought-free, instinctive swing! "

Once you get in a comfortable position over the ball, start your swing with a 'low and slow' move that promises your upper body all the time it needs to complete a full

'wind-up'. By creating a move at the start of the swing that is not rushed, your swing will initiate the proper coiling process. Make it a smooth 'one-piece' action, the arms and shoulders maintaining their relationship with the clubhead as it moves away on the desired inside track.

To think 'low and slow' has the further benefit that it in-volves the whole body in starting the swing, which im-mediately eliminates some of the problems associated with picking the club up too quickly with the hands and

START LOW - CREATE WIDTH2 losing the natural radius. What you are trying to create here is a wonderful circular motion with the clubhead, and the better your rhythm, the more speed you will en-joy as you accelerate into the ball. Swing at a comfort-able pace and you simply give yourself a better chance of winding and unwinding your body in sequence, the long term benefit being that you are on track to create a shal-low 'flat spot' at the bottom of the swing (again, perfect for sweeping the ball away).

Many great players (Jack Nicklaus and Nick Faldo among them) have found that hovering the clubhead at address helps to promote this wide move away from the ball. Grounding the clubhead at address can sometimes lead to a jerky first move, but if you hover the clubhead a little off the ground you do tend to find that the club glides away from the ball, and that sets you on the way to a full backswing. Give it a try!

by David Leadbetter

" To create the correct angle of attack for your driver, tee the ball so that at least half of it is above the surface of the clubface at address. "

It is astonishing to see how many golfers that play this great game actually hold the golf club incorrectly. In my estimation, at least 75% of all amateurs have a less than

perfect grip! Like the great Ben Hogan would say, "Good golf begins with a good grip", and no truer words were even spoken. Without the proper grip (your only connec-tion to the golf club), you won't be able to properly set your wrists to maximize your velocity at impact. Here are a few key pointers to get a good grip, every time. If you still find yourself having difficulty perfecting your grip, try the David Leadbetter Glove, which has visual in-dicators to help remind you of a few key positions you should have your hand in, each and every time you grip the club.

First... with the club held up in front of your body, be cer-tain that the bottom or "leading edge" of the club face is vertical to the horizon or in the 12 o'clock position. From there, lay the grip in the fingers of your left hand, so that it runs from just below the base of your little finger all the way to the first joint of the forefinger.

A GOOD GRIP = MORE POWER3

I find that it is vitally important for golf-ers to create the right mental image of the swing they are about to execute, particular-ly off the tee. While many golf shots re-

quire a descending blow to the ball, the driver demands a slightly ascending, sweeping blow with no contact with the turf. This will ensure that you do not lose any club-head speed through impact to ultimately leave you with maximum carry and roll.

A simple way to visualize this motion is to think of how you would kick a soccer ball. Your foot should sweep in

TEE IT HIGH, SEE 'EM FLY4

Second... close your hand around the grip and squeeze gently with the last three fingers. In this position, you should be able to see between two and three knuckles on the back of your hand, while the left thumb and forefinger are snug together.

Third... check to see that the 'line' that is created between your left thumb and knuckle should point in the direction of the right eye.

Fourth... spread the right hand so that as it joins the left, the club runs through the channel that is created at the base of the middle two fingers. When you close the right hand, the left thumb should disappear in that little 'cup' at the base of the right thumb. The 'line' on the right hand should now appear to run parallel to that same line cre-ated by your left hand.

Lastly... you should, as I call it, 'trigger' the right forefin-ger. In order to 'trigger' that finger, you should crook it around the shaft so that if virtually meets the underside of the right thumb. You want your hands to be compact on the club, but don't squeeze too tightly! Your grip pres-sure must at all times be sensitive to the weight of the clubhead.

behind the ball, just above the turf and then rise upward just before impact to strike the ball just below its equa-tor. That same angle of attack should be created with your driver. In order to do so, particularly with today's large-headed drivers, you should tee the ball so that at least half of the ball is above the clubface at address.

Too many players hit range balls, chips, and putts on the prac-tice green without any real meaning. Yes, they want to get it as close to the hole as possible, or make their 5 footer, or try not to slice their drive but, are they really getting themselves better at playing golf. Golf is about shooting the lowest score possible on each hole. You don’t get extra points for hitting it to 10 feet if you miss the putt. Just like there is no bonus for hitting your drive 300 down the middle if you miss the green, don’t get up and down, and make a bogey. Golf is about playing and scoring. It’s not about making great swings, especially if you can’t convert those great shots into great scores. So… what should you work on? To make this as simple as pos-sible, you should work on playing golf. That means a few things; 1. Being in the proper mindset, 2. Practice actual scenarios you will encounter on the course, and 3. Refine your technique. Let’s go over what these actually mean and it will aid you in designing a practice routine to help you shoot lower scores and have more fun on the course. To play good golf you have to be comfortable being in high pres-sure situations. This is different for each player and each player’s skill level. I might be nervous or stressed when I am leading a tournament by a shot or two, someone trying to break 90 might be nervous when they have one hole to play and all they have to do is make a bogey to shoot 89. We can both be feeling the same stress just in different situations. The key to handling this is putting yourself in the situation or in that feeling more often.

We do this with specific drills, games, and competitions in our practice. My favorite game is an up and down game that is done on the practice green. It forces me to get up and down from all around the green and to different holes. This game puts pressure on me that I will see in a normal round of golf. The most common and my favorite way to put a little extra pressure on myself or my students is to make a bet during a game or a round of golf. Many times this is a money game but it doesn’t have to be. Some common bets have been for pushups, rides to the course, lunch, or drinks after the round/practice session. The key is to put yourself in that stressful situation as often as possible so that you get comfortable being uncomfortable. Our second key is practicing actual scenarios you see on the course that might present an issue. This is also going to be differ-ent for each player. I personally struggle with the drive on hole 5. I like to hit a left to right ball flight with my driver and this means I have to aim almost out of bounds to hit the middle of the fairway. If I start the ball in the middle it will hit on the right side and bounce right into the trees. So I practice hitting a draw 3 wood or 3 iron on the range by making a fairway that resembles the tight-ness of hole 5 and work on starting my ball down the right with a slight draw to the middle. Find what gives you the most trouble on the course and recreate that on the practice range or green. You can take this to the next level by introducing a game that has some consequences. An example in my scenario would be: hit 5 shots in a row inside my fairway parameters and I can’t move on to the next part of my practice until I do. This way when I get to

42

shot number 5, and I have to hit the fairway to move on, it’s a pressure filled scenario that I will find on the course. Find what leads to your highest scores and make a game or competition in your practice to fix it. Make it count a little extra by having consequences for a poor shot and rewarding for a good shot. Put pressure on your practice to make it more realistic.

Lastly you have to address your actual technique. If a player is trying to hit a shot and they are doing it incorrectly, their rate of success will be dismal. In order to hit a sand shot there are certain techniques and foundations that a player has to do correctly to be successful. If you’re not doing them, you simply will not hit a good shot, and if you do it is luck. I do not want to hope for luck so I make sure that I analyze my technique if I’m having difficulties. Now, I’m a golf instructor, it’s how I make my living, so I had to write in this article at some point that you should come see me with these problems. If you are having trouble with a specific shot or with your swing in general, give me a call. I will look at your issue and we will figure out what you do well and what we can improve on, then come up with a plan that is tailored to you and your body mechanics so that you know exactly what to practice. If you don’t know what to fix and what causes certain issues you will be digging a bigger hole to climb out of later. Get the help now and let’s get you to playing the best golf of your life and having more fun on the golf course.
