The Apopka Chief, February 3, 2017, Page 3A By Teresa Sargeant Apopka Chief Staff If given final approv- al by the City Council at its February 15 meeting, an annexation vote will be held April 11 so residents of Fisher Plantation can de- cide if they want their sub- division to annexed into the city limits of Apopka. Fisher Plantation is a housing subdivision locat- ed west of Errol Estate on the west side of Schopke- Lester Road. According to Orange County Supervisor of Elections Bill Cowles’ Monday, January 30, email, there are currently 165 ac- tive voters in the election slated for April 11. State statute requires that a county canvassing board canvas all mail ballot elections. Three members are needed to have a full county canvassing board: a county judge, a county commis- sioner, and the supervisor of elections. In his email, Cowles said Orange County Com- missioner Bryan Nelson, as the Apopka-area represen- tative, might have a conflict in his appointment to the canvassing board. There- fore, Cowles recommended he not be appointed. Both men discussed this topic, according to Cowles’ email. As required by law, the city of Apopka and the state Division of Elections ap- proved the plan for the mail ballot election. The single question for all votes is a simple “Yes” or “No,” ac- cording to the email. The City Council gave first approval of the Fisher Plantation annexation or- dinance at its January 18 meeting. Second approv- al was given Wednesday, February 1. It will be vot- ed on for a third time at the February 15 City Council meeting. According to the ordi- nance, if the referendum re- ceives the majority of voter approval, the Fisher Planta- tion annexation will be ef- fective April 21. In a second email from Cowles, election ballots will be mailed on March 22. The Foliage Garden Club of Apopka will pre- sent its annual fundraiser, “Birds & Blooms,” fashion show and luncheon Satur- day, February 25, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church Apopka, 201 Park Avenue. Garden club mod- els will display Fash- ions from Rich Hip- pie Boutique, Altamonte Springs. The luncheon will be catered by South’rn Red Smok’r. There will be gift baskets drawings and door prizes. Tickets are $20 and should be purchased in ad- vance (not sold at door) from any garden club mem- ber or by calling Kay Huth at 407-889-2872. Those wishing to at- tend should RSVP by Mon- day, February 20, a spokes- woman said. By Teresa SargeantApopka Chief Staff Kit Land Nelson Park in Apopka will be the ven-ue of a tree-climbing cham-pionship, where arborists from all over Florida will test their speed, efficiency and prowess in trees, Feb-ruary 16-19. The last time the Flor-ida Chapter of the Interna-tional Society of Arbori-culture (ISA) held its tree climbing championship was in Magnolia Park in 2015. ISA, a worldwide non-profit organization support-ing tree care research and education, is headquartered in Champaign, Ill. First, on February 16, trees in Kit Land Nelson

Park will be prepared for the climbs by the remov-al of dead wood and moss. Then an outdoor tree school will take place on February 17, when a workshop will instruct pruning and safety techniques. “We like to cut dead branches so they don’t fall,” said Norm Easey, CEO of the Florida Chapter ISA. “If there’s excessive moss – we don’t remove moss because the moss needs to be removed. It doesn’t. We like to remove the moss just to make it easier for the spectators to see up into the tree.” Finally on February 18 and 19, 40 arborists will compete in the tree climb-ing championship. Five sta-tions will test the competi-

tors’ various abilities such as climbing a tree, working through the canopy, cutting poorly attached and dead branches, and doing eleva-tion work. The winner of the ISA Florida Chapter tree climb-ing championship will ad-vance to the international competition in Washington, D.C., this August. The Apopka tree climbing championship is ISA Florida Chapter’s only one this year. On January 18, the City Council listened to Adam Jackson, tree climb-ing championship chair, ex-plain the event and request permission for usage of Kit Land Nelson Park. “We’re in the agricul-tural, horticultural industry, but these are guys that take calculated risks through just experience every day of their lives and they ac-complish things of great-ness, which is basically an art,” Jackson said. Following Jackson’s presentation, City Commis-sioner Doug Bankson said he encouraged Jackson to approach the city for per-mission after attending the one in Magnolia Park. “It is a great fit for our city,” Bankson said. “They actually do go in and take care of our trees, which is a benefit to us. I just think it’s a wonderful event.” The City Council gave unanimous approval of Jackson’s request. The number of cham-pionship participants has grown since 1996, when the ISA Florida Chapter first formed. Originally at 20 competitors, the cap is now at 40. Though the competi-tive energy is high in tree climbing, the point of the Florida Chapter ISA Tree Climbing Championship is not to exhibit the activity as a sport. Hence, according to Easey, tree climbing may not be recognized as such. Instead, the championship is about demonstrating ar-borists’ job efficiency. “If you come out to watch the event, you will see the people on the ground,” Easey said. “The family members and the relatives are all cheering and yelling and shouting as the events go on. So it does feel very competitive. It does feel like a sport, but it really isn’t about speed and time. It’s really more about efficiently working in a tree and showing what arbor-ists do. These are the peo-ple that do it at a very high level.”

Cancer Society. On Feb-ruary 23, fourth grade will be taking a field trip to St. Augustine to enjoy some hands-on learning about FloridaÕ s diverse history.

Students are learning all about geometry in math, creating interactive fold-ables to build meaning for the academic vocabulary. Please make sure to review concepts covered in school with your child by asking them to explain their home-work or playing games that point out shapes, lines and angles that occur in the world around us. We just finished a unit on using decimals in place value, so you can have your child re-view this material by hav-ing them help you count change and keep track of how much items cost at the store.

In ELA (English Lan-guage Arts) students are learning about the craft and structure of literature, us-ing key details and main idea. Students will be read-ing more than one text and comparing them, as well as writing about those com-parisons. We will also be writing in order to explain our responses to reading non-fiction and informa-tional pieces.

In science, we are get-ting ready for the Orange County Science Fair. Stu-dents are going to be work-ing in class to create and run experiments to test their hypotheses to questions they have about different topics. Students are expect-ed to find a topic, form a hypothesis, run tests using variables, and form conclu-sions based upon their ex-periment results. They will use this process to create a

project to enter in the Rock Springs Science Fair. Win-ners will be entered into the OCPS Science Fair. En-courage your students to start thinking about project ideas, gathering materials, and talk to them about their progress!

During the third mark-ing period, our curriculum is focused on getting our students ready for the FSA (Florida Standards Assess-ment). This test will cover learning standards in writ-ing, reading, and mathe-matics. Please make sure that you are in contact with your childÕ s teacher, check-ing agendas and Class Dojo for important messages about your child’s progress. Some great ways to help your child for testing is to make sure that they com-plete daily homework, use programs such as i-Ready and VmathLive on Launch-

pad daily, talk to you about any fears or concerns they have, eat healthy meals, get a good night of rest, and read, read, read! And, com-municate with your childÕ s teacher. Students will be taking the FSA Writing As-sessment on February 28. Students are encouraged to bring their best writing skills to the table in order to communicate all the prog-ress theyÕ ve achieved this year.

Fifth gradeFifth grade is famous

for saying, “The way to be-come a better reader is to read!” To that point, fifth grade students are busy reading fiction and non-fiction books. The reading comprehension skills we will focus on for the month of February include:

*Quote accurately from a text.

*Explain relationships between two or more in-dividuals, events, ideas, or concepts.

*Summarize a text.We are also read-

ing “The City of Ember” as a class. Please contin-ue to encourage your stu-dent to read for Accelerat-ed Reader (AR) and work on i-Ready at home to re-inforce and enrich reading skills. The expectation for fifth grade students at Rock Springs is one book per week with an AR test. Hap-py, Happy Reading!

Important dates: FSA Writing test will be on February 28. FSA Read-ing and Math Assessments are computer-based and a schedule will be sent home. FCAT Science Assessment will be on May 1 and 2.

In writing, students are continuing to devel-op and strengthen writing

as needed by planning, re-vising, editing and rewrit-ing. Students need to intro-duce a topic or text clearly, state an opinion, and create an organizational structure in which ideas are logical-ly grouped to support the writer’s purpose. Students also are expected to use text evidence to support their opinion.

In social studies, fifth grade students are distin-guishing between the ideas of patriots, loyalists, and others during the American Revolution, explaining the role historical documents played in the American Revolution, identifying and locating the 13 original col-onies on a map, and evalu-ating the personal and po-litical hardships resulting from the American Revo-lution.
