Jane Winters named as LCM Executive Director

8
Lake Christian Ministries has an- nounced the appointment of Jane Winters as its new Executive Director effective February 1, 2018. Jane is no stranger to charitable community ser- vice. She has served as Executive Director of the Community Founda- tion of Jackson and Mason Counties in her pre-SML community of Ripley and Point Pleasant, West Virginia. Since relocating to the lake in 2016, she has given extensively of her time and talent to LCM as well as worked as a marketing & development con- sultant for a variety of other charities. She and her husband Roger reside in the Gills Creek area. “I am delighted at being selected for this position,” said Winters, who joined the LCM Board as chair of the Fund Development Committee last January and led LCM’s very success- ful fund development program in 2017. “LCM is embarking on a chal- lenging vision of working toward a poverty free SML community. I look Jane Winters named as LCM Executive Director forward to leading the effort to shape LCM’s direction to pursue this lofty mission. We have a strong and very talented leadership team and volun- teer network who are dedicated to providing for our Neighbors’ immedi- ate needs and helping them move from a life of struggles to a more se- cure future.” Fund Development Committee mem- ber Jim Laseter, who led the estab- lishment of a new Planned Giving pro- gram for LCM last year, has agreed to take over leadership of the LCM Fund Development Committee and activity. In announcing Winters’ appointment, Dave English, LCM Board Chair, also indicated that for the first time the po- sition of Executive Director would be compensated. “For its first 20 years, LCM has been very fortunate that its leadership has flowed naturally from its volunteer base. Starting with Stan Carey, LCM’s first Executive Director (1991) to Jim Cameron (2003) to Mike Bond (2011), each Executive Director came from the existing LCM operating volunteer base.” English continues, “Unfortunately, in April 2014 when Mike stepped down as Executive Director, LCM found that its volunteer work force at a leader- ship level was aging out and only one person, Chuck Murphy, was willing to accept the position — but only for a limited length of time. The same was true in early February 2017 when Dave English stepped into the posi- tion. Dave served as Executive Direc- tor from February to November 2017, at which time Mike Bond began serv- ing as Interim Executive Director. “Concurrent to the search for a direc- tor, the Board created a new Vision of ending poverty in the Smith Mountain Lake area and strengthening our pro- grams that help Neighbors reach their ‘New Tomorrows.’ The Board further decided that, due to the increasing size and complexity of the organiza- tion and needs of our Neighbors, an Executive Director must have skill sets beyond those required in the past. Unfortunately, finding candi- dates for what effectively became a full time unpaid position with broad responsibilities and a broader vision became more challenging. Therefore, after consultation with key pastors, selected donors, heads of both Unit- ed Way Agencies and a Bedford Foundation, the Board decided the position would be compensated, though at a level far below market value. Numerous applications were received.” Reflecting on his 10 months serving both as our Board Chair and Execu- tive Director, English marveled at the commitment of the volunteers who tirelessly come to LCM several times a week and are so dedicated to Neighbors, to LCM and to living out their faith. “They do so without fanfare and with no desire for recognition,” he noted. “There is a great deal of detail in- volved in running LCM,” English add- ed, “but I know Jane Winters is well suited to that task. She is experi- enced, detail oriented, well organized, loves people and is passionate about LCM and the services we provide to our Neighbors. We are in good hands as we move into 2018 and beyond.” Winter 2018

LCM Neighbors - Karen’s Story

through over 40 back, leg, and foot surgeries. After she was deemed a medical liability by employers, her medical bills mounted. The home she had owned since 1997 was re-cently foreclosed.

Despite every attempt to avoid it, Karen was forced into disability. Family income is now limited to her disability checks and two grandchil-dren’s Social Security. Without debt and with some agency help, she now lives within her budget, renting a small home and using an ailing 1996 Chevy Tahoe for transporta-tion.

Karen’s grandchildren came to her in 2008 as a result of abuse and ne-glect in their early lives. Then ages eight, six, and four months, the chil-dren began their journey towards healing under Karen’s tender and committed care. The demons of their early lives still affect them, but Karen’s spiritual, relational, intellec-tual, and motivational resources are helping them heal. Keylie is also re-sponding well to physical and speech therapy, medical attention, childcare and education. At the out-set, when Keylie’s condition was finally diagnosed, doctors held dim views of her future. All are surprised by where she is today.

This story is atypical of the ser-vices and programs LCM routinely provides, but it shows how love, persistence and God’s work can prevail in difficult circumstances. Some important background:

For the past nine years, Karen, 57, has been the guardian of her three grandchildren. The oldest, 17-year-old Breanna, will be graduating from Franklin County High School this spring, works part-time as a certified EMT and has already been accepted to Jefferson Col-lege of Health Sciences. Her dream is to become a trauma doc-tor despite her dyscalculia. Antho-ny, 15, with auditory and visual processing challenges, PTSD, and ADD, needs to be home-schooled. Keylie, 9, has Angelman’s Syn-drome, a genetic abnormality that affects her receptive and expres-sive abilities, muscle tone, and thermostatic control. While Keylie can take a couple of steps with support, she is fundamentally wheelchair-bound, cannot speak, and has undergone ten surgeries.

Karen came to LCM to participate in the “Getting Ahead” class hosted in an ongoing collaboration with the Wonderful Wednesday programs at Bethlehem United Methodist Church. We quickly realized that she had the capacity and wisdom to contribute much about emerging from poverty to her fellow class-mates. Facing her demanding fam-ily situation, Karen learned to excel in scheduling, organizing and set-ting priorities on behalf of her chil-dren. She earned three associate degrees--in accounting, psycholo-gy, and technology — a BS in psy-chology and has nearly completed her Masters. She has worked as an auditor, in telemarketing and customer service, and ran her own construction company. Karen has fought health problems most of her adult life, overcame leukemia 15 years ago and has suffered

Unlike other Getting Ahead students, Karen’s need was not a job. Rather, her need was a quality of life issue: safe and manageable mobility for her grandchildren. With Keylie wheelchair bound and growing heav-ier, Karen had to rely on her grand-son to lift Keylie in and out of the truck’s backseat. A vehicle that would allow her to be lifted and an-chored while underway — and with sufficient heating and cooling to keep her body temperature within safe ranges — was desperately needed.

When Karen’s transportation issues became clear our Getting Ahead volunteers, to began searching for a solution. They learned that a used vehicle meeting Keylie’s needs would sell in the range of $20,000 -$30,000 — well beyond Karen’s family budget. Then, as Christmas was nearing, our volunteers learned of a used mobility vehicle at a deal-ership in Salem. An LCM volunteer spoke with the owner, who after hearing Karen’s story, slashed his price to $13,500…better, but still beyond Karen’s reach.

Happy Ending: Before the end of the year, our dedicated LCM volun-teers went to the Outreach Ministry at LCM member church Bethlehem UMC with a request to combine re-sources to help Karen and Keylie. What resulted was profoundly mov-ing and truly demonstrated God’s work in and through LCM, its mem-ber churches and the community. Six days later BUMC parishioners and the SML Lions were able to pur-chase the van for Karen’s family and provide a donation for future mainte-nance and insurance expenses.

A very special “THANK YOU!” to ALL who stepped forward to make this past Christmas one that Karen’s family--and many at LCM and Beth-lehem United Methodist Church--will never forget.

Lake Christian Ministries’ 25th Anniversary On November 9, 2017, Lake Christian Ministries cel-ebrated its 25th Anniversary and Membership Meet-ing. It was a wonderful opportunity to “Share Our Story.” Due to the generosity of the Capps Home Building Center, the Celebration featured Gayle Turner, a professional storyteller who recounted Lake Christian Ministries’ first 25 years in an enter-taining and interactive way.

Turner also introduced the Vision for Lake Christian Ministries for the next 25 years by having each member of the audience open a blue velvet bag and hold a large clear marble symbolizing the vision of Lake Christian Ministries: “A poverty-free Smith Mountain Lake community where each individu-al is valued, connected, and lives in hope.”

The 25th Anniversary celebration took place in Trinity Ecumenical Parish’s Fellowship Hall, where attend-ance was limited to venue capacity of 175 persons despite more wishing to come. Turner told many stories. Some of the most memora-ble recounted LCM’s Beginning, the evolution to Jim Cameron’s leadership, the donation of the Capps fa-cility, and renovations by the Bent Nail Company. At-

tendee Stan Carey, our first Executive Di-rector, was surround-ed by many who played an important part in the Beginning, including Connie and Fred Canova, Lois and Dick Garlough, Ave

and Bill Wenzel and Linda Imirie. The Capps family was represented by Ryan and Sally Cappellari and Bruce Shelton, while the Bent Nail contingent was led by Jim and Margie Byrnes. Chris Cameron, widow of Jim Cameron, was also able to join the celebration.

In the spirit of the cooperation among the churches that formed Lake Christian Ministries, the simple lunch was prepared by the Hospitality Group at Bethlehem United Methodist Church and transported to TEP. The program ended with the recognition of the Charter Members of the new LCM Sustainers Society, Bart & Corinne Matthies and Andy & Lea Larsen.

Nine Neighbors began meeting for LCM’s fourth “Getting Ahead in a Just Getting By World” course on January 10, with graduation targeted for late May after 16 weeks of intensive self-examination, study and classroom discussions.

Two new facilitators are leading the training: Jon Atchue, who holds a Masters in counseling from Les-

ley University in Cambridge, MA became an LCM volunteer after recently retiring to SML following many years as Chief Human Resources Officer of London-based Rexam, world’s largest maker of beverage cans. He is being assisted by Cathy Cal-loway, a Neighbor who successfully completed the “Getting Ahead…” study program last August and has returned to co-facilitate our first 2018 session. “Cathy relates exceptionally well because she has walked in the same shoes as many of the course participants,” Jon said. “In fact, she knew several of them previously as friends, neighbors and LCM Neighbors.”

Atchue also noted that several of the students en-rolled in “Getting Ahead…” at the urging of family members and/or friends who are graduates of the program. “We are thrilled that word about how much this course can help a struggling family is getting around,” he said.

If you are 70½ years old or older, you can take advantage of a simple way to benefit our Neighbors in need and re-ceive tax benefits in return. You can give up to $100,000 from your IRA directly to a qualified charity like LCM with-out having to pay income taxes on the gift. This law no longer has an expiration date, so you are free to make an annual gift to LCM to support our daily services or you can make a gift from your Required Minimum Distribution (RMD) to help build LCM’s long-term funds that provide lasting support for our Neighbors.

Donations from LCM’s generous donors, churches, gran-tors, Business Partners, and civic organizations made the following programs and services possible for our Neigh-bors in need during 2017:

•112,750 nutritious meals were provided to 2,200 individuals through the LCM food center in Moneta and mobile food pantries that travel to Penhook UMC and the Moneta Senior Center; •Clothing and gifts were shared with 400 of our Neighbors’ children through “A Child’s Christ-mas;” •306 families were assisted with crisis financial assistance through direct payment to providers for housing; fuel; utilities; medical service; den-tures, and other special needs; and

Over the last 18 months, three nationally acclaimed “Getting Ahead in a Just Getting by World” programs were conducted for 32 Neighbors with a goal of moving them toward a better quality of life. 53% of these partici-pants are now employed on a part-time or full-time basis and the others are working toward a more secure future with college classes, family counseling and medical sup-port.

Your gift can be used today, allowing you to see the difference your donation is making.

You pay no income taxes on the gift. The transfer generates neither taxable income nor a tax deduction, so you benefit even if you do not itemize deductions.

If you have not yet taken your Required Minimum Dis-tribution for 2018, your IRA charitable rollover gift can satisfy all or part of that requirement.
