Siksha 'O' Anusandhan University has evolved into an institution ofrecognition for its programmes in professional education for the lasteighteen years. The magnitude of involvement by administration,faculty members and students has been increasing in a rhythm ofprogress and futuristic vision. The world today needs professionallytrained and skilled human resources who are simultaneously sensitiveand responsive to socio-cultural and sustainable development issues.The abiding philosophy of all the constituent institutes of theUniversity is a humanistic approach to learning, evaluation, research,publication and social responsibility.

The fact of working on areas in medical science and health care,biotechnology, technological application, digital connectivity, iswell defined tradition. THE UNIVERSITY

Recognizing its contribution to technical and professional educationthe University Grants Commission (UGC) declared Siksha 'O' Anusandhana Deemed University U/S 3 of the UGC Act, 1956 in the year 2007. Eversince its inception in 1996-97 Siksha 'O' Anusandhan University, alongwith all its constituent institutes, has shown impressive progress interms of knowledge, skills, human, and material resources. This hasbeen corroborated by its accreditation of National Assessment andAccreditation Council (NAAC) of University Grants Commission (UGC)with 'A' Grade in the year 2009 in view of its overall performance.Siksha 'O' Anusandhan University has also been accredited byInternational Accreditation Organisation (IAO) for its quality ofEducation responsibility to its students and to the educationprofession.

The University is strategically located in the city, highly accessibleto the Railway Station, Airport and State Secretariat. Each institutehas its own campus that blends environment friendly architecture withabundant greenery.

The founder of the University, Prof. Manojranjan Nayak is an eminenteducationist and a humanist at heart. His simple vision nourished anoble rubric of institutions dedicated to contemporary branches ofeducation and research encompassing technology, medical, dental,nursing, biotechnology, business administration, pharmacy, and law.Transparency in administration, delegation of authority, andfunctional autonomy, emphasis on quality education and research arethe guiding principles of SOA.

All the constituent institutions have state-of-the-art facilities anda talented pool of 1300 faculty members.

The schools of the University have evolved a learning ambience that isflexible and suitable for dissemination of knowledge in frontierareas. The University stands for progressive innovation in education,administration and social responsibility. All this has given arespectable identity to SOA University.

The objective of the University is to promote professional education,research, training and development in engineering, management,computer and medical sciences so as to cater to the need of theengineering, software and hardware, medical and managerial personnel

in the country. Eight institutes weave the close-knit family of theUniversity.

The University saw a record placement of students in the 2012-13session, with students opting for employment through the PlacementCell being recruited by reputed companies, almost 90% of engineeringstudents were placed in companies such as Tata Consultancy Services(TCS), Wipro, Capgemini and HCL, while almost 80% of managementstudents were recruited by ICICI, HDFC, Capital IQ and Airex. Almost80% of undergraduates and 100% of postgraduates from pharmacy wereemployed by Ranbaxy Pharmaceuticals, Scott Edil Pharmacia, MatrixLaboratories and Nouveau Medicament.

The University has placed strong emphasis on research programmesparticularly the Ph.D. programme. The University strongly encouragesfull-time research scholars with fellowships to carry out theirresearch in different institutes. Currently more than 531 researchscholars are pursuing their Ph.D. degree and 16 Ph.D.s have beenawarded, with a few more in the pipeline.

The University has 4 research centres and a Centre of Excellence inTheoretical & Mathematical Sciences to carry out fundamental and basicresearch. There are 628 SCOPUS Index based publications to the creditof the University with a good number of high impact factorpublications. There has been a visible growth in the research scenarioof the University. The University has organized many premierconferences besides a number of national level workshops andconferences. There has been a regular practice of staff developmentprogrammes in different institutes of the University to promote thefaculty members to a greater height.

The University has collaborations with different national levelinstitutes such as NITs, IIMT, software industries and recentlycollaboration has been established with Florida InternationalUniversity, USA.

The University has also set up a Community Radio Service to serve thesocio-economic, cultural, educational and health problems of thepeople in the neighbourhoods.

The Institute of Technical Education and Research (ITER), establishedin 1996, is located at Bhubaneswar and is spread over 40 acres ofscenic landscape. It is 8 kilometres from Bhubaneswar railway station,4 kilometres from the airport and 2 kilometres from the Govt, busstand. The Institute is sensitive to the changing trends in educationand demands of the industry. ITER has attained the status of a premierinstitution of engineering and technology in India. National Board ofAccreditation (AICTE) has accredited and even re-accredited all itseligible under graduate programmes. ITER has gained respectability intechnical education for its innovative curriculum, impressiveplacement, industries interface and well qualified faculty members.The Institute has an enrolment of nearly 7500 students who follow anon-negotiable academic calendar. The Institute has signed MOU withIMMT (CSIR), Infosys for Campus Connect Programme (CCP) & Wipro forMission 10X, Hexaware for Centre for Excellence and Mindtree forGyanbrukshya, Germany. The Institute has also signed MOU with IndianInstitute of Industrial Engineers for spreading the IndustrialEngineering Education, CIPET to given industrial exposure to facultyand students, SBNIT, Surat and MNIT, Jaipur. Accordingly, the studentsare constantly motivated to acquire knowledge and skills.

DEPARTMENT OF CIVIL ENGINEERING

Colossal innovations in micro and macro structural designs and theintroduction of new materials have revolutionized the oldest branch ofengineering i.e. Civil Engineering. The challenge today for thisbranch is to introduce and popularize eco-friendly composite materialsfor construction and infrastructure expansion. To meet the challenges,the Department has grown to eminence by offering a relevant curriculumto undergraduate, postgraduate students and Ph.D. scholars, the resultis quality human resources for the built-in environment, R & Dorganisations and educational institutions, a rational blend of youngand experienced qualified and renowned faculty, updated curricula withwell defined research areas and possession of full-fledgedlaboratories create an educative ambience for training and research.Major defined areas of research are Structural Engineering.Geotechnical Engineering, Water Resources Engineering, EnvironmentalEngineering, Transportation Engineering and Soft Computing. TheDepartment offers B.Tech, M.Tech and Ph.D. programmes. Specializationat the postgraduate level is available in Structural Engineering andGeotechnical Engineering. The Department also understands theresponsibility of incorporating new materials, design and constructionmethodology for preservation of the environment through providingconsultancy services in areas of Civil Engineering. The Department hasthe following laboratories not only to cater to the needs of thestudents but also to fulfill the experimental requirements forresearch and consultancy services:

The academic performance and placement status of students in thisDepartment are excellent. The department has established an "AmericanSociety of Civil Engineering Students Chapter" which is activelyorganising different activities.

DEPARTMENT OF COMPUTER SCIENCE & ENGINEERING

Today, there is an intense and extensive interface between the realworld and the virtual world. The branch of Computer Science andEngineering meets the manifold challenges with profound research onhigh capacity processors and programmes. This branch now is theepicenter of all other branches, including entertainment andmultimedia. This branch is one of the sought after courses by theundergraduate and postgraduate students. The B.Tech programmes havebeen re-accredited by National Board of Accreditation, AICTE. SomePh.D. candidates are actively pursuing their research.

The infrastructure of the department is geared towards meeting thecurrent requirements of the curriculum and industry. Two laboratoriesare dedicated to training in networking. Five computer organisationlaboratories are equipped with more than 600 computers, theselaboratories are connected to the Linux server. HP ProLiant DL380 G7 X56770 (rack mouth), having Intel Xeon X5670 processor. Thelaboratories are also connected to the four servers i.e. ALPHA Server(with unlimited Unix), Windows NT, Novel Netware and Internet WebServer.

One laboratory is equipped with multimedia tools and advancedcomputing resources for research and project activities. Softwareapplication packages like Visual Studio, ORACLE 10g, SQL SERVER,LINUX, MATLAB-7 and various multimedia tools along with programmingsuits like C, C++ and JAVA are made available to all students andfaculty members.

The postgraduate programmes offered by the Department are: Computer Science & Engineering Computer Science & Data Processing

41 faculty members including 1 Professor, 2 Associate Professors, 38Assistant Professors, 1 Senior Lecturer and 2 regular Ph.D. Scholarshave proven expertise in the field of Ad hoc Networks, ArtificialIntelligence, Soft Computing and Machine Learning, Natural Languageprocessing, Data Mining and Bioinformatics, operating Systems,Distributed Systems and Networking, Security, Computational Financeand Cloud Computing. The Department also has 2 Teaching Associates and12 Technical Assistants, assist the students in an interactiveenvironment. The academia are associated members of various

professional bodies like IEEE, IET, CSI, IAENG, ACM, IACSIT, ISTE,OITS among others.

DEPARTMENT OF COMPUTER SCIENCE & INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY

Computer Science and Information Technology introduced the data,information and knowledge to the internet superhighways, making thisworld a global village. Humanity is inevitably dependent on it. As abranch of engineering its relevance will continue to grow in future.

This Department offers M.Tech programme in Computer Science andInformatics. It is well equipped with adequate laboratoryinfrastructure and necessary staff strength. The Department emphasizeson interactive teaching and research and thus caters to thecomputational needs of students and faculty members.

The Department has lab facility to train the students in differentspecialised areas such as Web Technology, Advance Java Platform,Networking, Multimedia and popular programming languages. The labs areconnected to the networking environment with state-of-the-art serverswith emphasis on software engineering, software to make the studentsindustry adaptable. Software application packages like Visual Studio,ORACLE 11g, SQL SERVER, LINUX, MATLAB-7 and programming suites like C,C++ and JAVA are made available to all students and staff. Thelaboratories have high-end servers, including Linux/Unix and Windowsplatforms.

Each lab session in all the semesters has been meticulously designedin the form of assignments, which are to be completed withinstipulated time. Appropriate lab procedures are followed to get theright kind of hands-on-experience and expertise in the above saidsoftware. The Department also offers special training to the studentsin .NET, Core JAVA, Advance Java and various internet tools. Thishelps them in preparing good projects in the areas of Mining, Tourism,Air Ticket Reservation, Web Based Network Programming and SecurityMarketing Application, Healthcare System and Online Examination, AdhocNetworks etc.

The Institute has tie-up with several Industries like Infosys, TCS,Hexaware and others to help the students to be industry ready. TheDepartment also offers industrial electives as a part of the coursecurriculum in which recent advancement in IT is being imparted.

DEPARTMENT OF ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING

As a core branch the Department lives up to the developments takingplace in the field of electricity generation, transmission anddistribution through hydro, thermal, nuclear and nonconventionalsources. Similarly, the Department studies the distribution ofelectricity and use of new materials in different applications. Theundergraduate programme in the Department has been re-accredited byNBA, of AICTE. It offers M.Tech programmes in Power Electronics &Drives as well as Energy Systems & Management. Eminent professors areengaged in quality research and supervision of Ph.D. scholars.

The Department has specific laboratories for Electrical Machines,Control and Instrumentation, Power Systems, Power Electronics, BasicElectrical, Network Devices and Electric Drives, Electrical Design andSimulation Lab.

A Computational Laboratory has been added to the Department forcarrying out Computer Aided research activities. Modernisation andRemoval of Obsolesence (MODROB) is regularly practiced in all thelaboratories. Moreover a Robotics Laboratory is expected to functionshortly.

The Machine Laboratory is equipped with modern electrical machines:single and three phase transformers with multi winding, DC & AC MotorGenerator Sets, Induction and Synchronous Motors and Single PhaseMotors to name a few.

The Control and Instrumentation Laboratory has Amplidyne Set, DCPosition Control System, Data Acquisition System, PID Controller.

The Power Electronics Laboratory is equipped with Converter Rectifiersand Inverters, both single phase and three phase, Cyclo Converter,IGBT based Inverter and other modern equipments in the related field.

The power System Lab is equipped with Relay Trainers, Oil Testing Kit,Current Injection Circuit and Artificial Transmission Line.

Basic Electrical Engineering and Network Devices Laboratory is meantfor verification of Basic Principles of Electrical Engineering andLaws of Electrical Networks. The Department has its own Library havingreferred texts of international repute for faculty members & students.

Besides, the Department has added a computer lab to facilitateComputer Aided Electrical machine Design, software based project workfor final year undergraduate postgraduate students. This lab alsopromotes the faculty members for in-house R & D programme.

The Department of Electrical Instrumentation and Control Engineeringoffers the 4-year B.Tech Programme in Electrical Instrumentation andControl Engineering. The Institute of Technical Education & Researchhas been offering this course since 2008. Electrical Instrumentationand Control is a vast interdisciplinary branch of engineering. TheDepartment is fascinating motley of multifarious disciplines oftechnology such as electronics, electrical, and mechanicalengineering. The branch has evolved as a response to thesophistication of industrial operations. With growing automation ofmanufacturing, nuclear power generation and many other conventionalproduction systems, Instrumentation and Control Engineering has achallenging responsibility of designing and developing reliablecontrol systems. The Department, a relatively new branch ofengineering, attracts a large number of undergraduate students due toits contemporary relevance. Electronics & Communication along with computer engineering has madethis world flat. The importance of the subject is more evident todayin the evolution of consumer and industrial electronics that hasundergone a sea-change. The undergraduate programme in the Departmenthas been re-accredited by National Board of Accreditation (of AICTE).

The Department offers undergraduate programme in Electronics &Communication Engineering and postgraduate programmes in CommunicationSystem Engineering as well as Digital Signal & Image Processing. The Basic Electronics Laboratory introduces students to identify andlearn the fundamentals of devices like diodes, BJTs, FETs, OPAMPs andDigital gates, Principal instruments are CROs, Function Generators andRegulated Power Supply.

The Analog and Digital Electronics Circuit Laboratories are equippedwith circuit simulation packages like multisim, Tanner tools and P-Spice. The signal processing laboratories have advanced software like

Matlab (version 7.1) with toolboxes for image processing, fuzzy logic,genetic algorithm and signal processing.

Digital Electronics Circuits Laboratory uses simulation languages likeVerilog and VHDL. Principal equipments are CROs, Function Generators,Regulated Power Supply, Digital Multimeter.

The Microprocessor and Microcontroller Laboratory houses hardware andsoftware like Keil PK 51, Keil MCB 2919-ED, Reil MCBST M32E-ED, KeiliuMDK-ARM. The VLSI laboratory has 60 floating license of CompleteTanner Tools Pro to facilitate VLSI design.

Communication Engineering Laboratory helps the students to understandvarious nuances of analog and digital communication. The mainequipments are DSOs, CROs, Function Generators and CommunicationTrainer Kits.

Communication System Laboratory deals with Microwave, Optical andSatellite communication systems. The equipments available aremicrowave Benches, Fiber Optics Trainers, Satellite Trainer, SpectrumAnalyzer and Trainer Kits.

Digital Signal Processing Laboratory takes care of the understandingand hands on training of various signal processing techniques andalgorithms. Students are encouraged to develop algorithms andimplement them both in MATLAB and DSP Processors. This laboratory isalso used by both B.Tech and M.Tech students. In addition to theabove, this laboratory also facilitates students who want to do minorand major projects in the area of Signal Processing. The majorequipments in the lab are Personal Computers, MATLAB 7.0.1, TMS 6713DSP Processors with Code Composer studio.

Project Laboratory take care of 30 students at a time. The ProjectLaboratory is equipped with all types of software like MATLAB, Tanner,Com-Sim software and lab view.

The M.Tech Laboratory helps the students to understand variousadvanced communication and signal processing experiments. The mainequipments are DSP processor like TMS 6713, MSP 430 and different DataAcquisition card.

DEPARTMENT OF ELECTRONICS & INSTRUMENTATION ENGINEERING

To meet the growing and long standing demands for industrialautomation and control, the Department started an undergraduateprogramme. The same has been accredited by National Board ofAccreditation (of AICTE). Subsequently, M.Tech programme in VLSI andEmbedded System as well as Microelectronics were introduced.

The Department has an excellent Instrumentation and Process ControlLaboratory, Sensor & Signal Laboratory, Measurement Laboratory, VLSIDesign and Circuit Simulation Laboratory. The laboratories are well-equipped with adequate number of hardware, trainer kits, oscilloscopesand function generators to give hands-on-training on Industrialautomation. The VLSI Laboratory is equipped with software like Aldec(version 7.1), Tanner for Layout Design. For FPGA implementation ithas Boards with Spatern-2 & Spatern-3E. The circuit simulation is donewith software like Multisim, Commsim, Pspice, Circuit Simulator andLab view.

It uses the powerful VLSI software SILVACO T CAD software for virtualfabrication.

The latest version of software such as KEIL for embedded system withARM-7 processor has been added to its kit. The Department is takingstep for setting up a semiconductor device fabrication laboratory.This will facilitate UG, PG and research student activities. It willbe a unique laboratory in this region.

The engineering programmes like Applied Electronics & Instrumentation,Instrumentation & Control Engineering have wide application inindustry. It has application in medicine, surgery, exploration intospace and are in great demand both in core sector and IT industries.

The importance of AE & I & ICE is well established in the precisionmanufacturing process today. Instrumentation and Systems AutomationSociety in the US is formed to assess the efficacy of instruments forobservation, control and measurement of industrial processes.

DEPARTMENT OF MECHANICAL ENGINEERING

Mechanical Engineering is a creative discipline that draws upon anumber of basic and applied sciences, in order to design, build andoptimize devices, machines, processes, and systems which involvemechanical forces, work and energy. It is one of the most versatilefields of engineering influencing almost all aspects of our life, inthe light of emerging technologies, the job description of mechanicalengineers has changed substantially. Applied higher mathematics,advanced engineering mechanics, computational techniques and designtechnology remain the core disciplines. Today' mechanical engineersalso deal with computational fluid dynamics, electro-mechanicaltechnology, material science and simulation. They may also faceinterdisciplinary problems where they will have to employ their softskills. The program has been adapted to these new requirements.

Mechanical engineering is amongst the early branches of engineeringthat started in the Institute. The Department was set up in 1998. TheM.Tech program (Thermal engineering specialization) was introduced in2004-05 academic session. As a core branch, the department caters tothe needs and demands of global industries. In recognition of progressand excellence in teaching, research and infrastructure, theundergraduate programme of the Department has obtained accreditationfrom National Board of Accreditation (NBA) of AICTE in 2004. The samewas re-accredited in the year 2008. The Department started Ph.D.programs from 2007 under SOA University. Admission to the Ph.D.programme is open to students twice a year for the Autumn and Springsemesters. Nine students have registered for the Ph.D. program tilldate.

Thestudents are updated with industry based knowledge in computer aidedmanufacturing at CIM (Computer Integrated Manufacturing) laboratoryDepartment of Mechanical Engineering is actively involved ininteraction with public and private sector industry/Institutions suchas Larsen & Tubro, IMMT (Institute of Minerals and MaterialsTechnology, formerly RRL), CIPET, Wipro, TCS, Infosys, Hexaware andMind Tree. The Department of Mechanical Engineering is the largest Department ofthe Institute and has a workshop, a machine shop and 15 laboratories.The workshop has three sections, namely fitting shop, welding shop andfoundry shop. The workshop is extensively used for imparting training

to all first year students irrespective of their departments.Mechanical engineering students of second and third year also gethands-on-experience on specialized machines. Most of the laboratoriescater not only to undergraduate and post graduate courses but also tosponsored research, industrial consultancy, post graduatedissertations and B. Tech project work. DEPARTMENT OF PHYSICS

The history of development of Science and Technology is fascinating.The study of development of basic science and particularly Physics ismore fascinating as one can see it to have unraveled a great deal ofnature's mystery providing insight into the principles and mechanismthat ultimately govern sustainable growth of Technology. Eachengineering student with a passion to excel in the career needs toundergo a course in Physics at the outset to acquire requisiteknowledge on basic principles of nature and inculcate true scientifictemper in order to be able to handle complex issues later in thebroader field of Technology. Keeping this in view, the coursestructure in Physics has been designed with emphasis on emerging areasof waves & oscillation, optics, electromagnetism and quantummechanics. In addition to providing teaching in Physics, theDepartment also imparts teaching in Electrical Engineering Materials(EEM) at B.Tech level and "Introduction to Nanotechnology" at M.Techlevel.

An Advanced Material Science Lab. has been actively pursuingresearch for benefit of M.Tech & Ph.D. students. The objective ofthe laboratory is to synthesize, fabricate and characterizeadvance materials such as Multiferroics and Multi functionalApplications/Devices.

A magnetic Thin Film Laboratory (funded by S 'O' A University) hasbeen set up recently to fabricate Ferrite thin films andmultiferroics thin films using a spin coating unit. The design &fabrication of low frequency and high frequency devices would alsobe carried out. The M.Tech (VLSI & embeddedsystems/microelectronics) and Ph.D. students use these facilitiesto work in the area of magnetic & dielectric materials.

DEPARTMENT OF CHEMISTRY

The study of Chemistry and its application is indispensable to thestudy of engineering and technology. An application orientedunderstanding of the subject gives the students the leverage to knowthe artifice of technology. The students acquire the knowledge ofchemical compounds and their applications, important especially inelectronics, computer engineering and environmental engineering. TheDepartment gives more emphasis on analytical approach, cleartheoretical concepts and overall performance of the students in orderto achieve academic excellence. The Department has graduated toinclude studies and research in applied chemistry and environmentalscience. Department is well equipped with two Chemistry laboratoriesfor B.Tech students. The evaluation of chemistry laboratory is basedon day-to-day performance, viva-voce / quizzes and laboratory test atthe end of the semester. Department of Chemistry offers M.Tech programme in EnvironmentalScience & Technology and Ph.D. programme in important areas ofChemical Science and Environmental Science. The Department hascustomized a functional micro-biology laboratory for M.Tech students.The Department is committed to sustain the scientific enquiry of thestudents and research that is socially beneficial.

Thrust Areas and Research

The Department is engaged in research in the thrust areas of AppliedChemistry and Environmental Science. The faculty members havepublications in indexed journals. Ph.D. scholars are presently workingin the departmental laboratories. Faculty members are engaged inresearch in the field of solution chemistry, water analysis, solventextraction, nanocomposite sample preparation, synthesis and surfacemodification of nanomeaterials environmental science, etc. The seniorfaculty members of the Department guide and supervise research work.

In a defined impetus to research, an AICTE sponsor project underMODROB scheme has been implemented with instruments like AtomicAbsorption Spectrophotometer (AAS), UV-Visible Spectrophotometer,Flame Photometer and Dissolved Oxygen Meter, TDS-EC analyser, Nephelo-

Turbidity meter, BOD incubator and digital pH meter. Other instrumentslike Conductivity meter and Ultrasonic Interferometer are already inuse for the molecular interaction studies of various systems.Recently, department has installed a Polarizing Trinocular OpticalMicroscope a dipole meter, GM counter and NaI (TI) detector.

The Department organized the 77th DAE – BRNS IANCAS National workshopon "Radiochemistry and Application of Radioisotopes from 28th November– 6th December 2011 in collaboration with Indian Association of NuclearChemists and Allied Scientists, Bhaba Atomic Research Center, Mumbai.Department is regularly organizing faculty seminar and extramurallectures inviting reputed researchers from BRAC, NISER, IACS andvarious other organizations. A National Conference on "Nano –Materials as Catalysts" organized on 25th – 26th, January, 2013 wassponsored by, BRNS, Mumbai.

DEPARTMENT OF MATHEMATICS

Mathematics has served humanity as the most powerful tool by solvingphysical problems of the real and abstract world. It also shows thepath to the symmetry of equations in all branches of knowledge.

The Department, keeping in view the requirements and future prospectsof budding technocrats, has been instrumental in influencing theirlogical, analytical and computational ability to meet the challengesin the technical field.

There are young and energetic faculty members in the department whoare involved in classroom teaching. The senior faculty members guidecurriculum development and research.

The establishment of Centre of Excellence in Theoretical andMathematical Sciences is another distinctive achievement of theDepartment.

The curriculum followed by the Department is contemporary and usefulfor all branches of science and engineering.

The faculty of the Department along with the research scholars havecontributed enormously to different fields of pure and appliedmathematics. Major areas of research are Numerical Analysis, FluidDynamics, Differential Equations, Operation Research, EstimationTheory and Fuzzy Optimization.

Interdisciplinary research, seminars, symposia, invited talks byeminent academicians are among the regular activities of thedepartment. Most of the faculty members are life members of differentprofessional societies such as: ORISSA MATHEMATICAL SOCIETY, INDIANSOCIETY OF TECHNICAL EDUCATION, ORISSA INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY SOCIETY.The participation of the faculty in varieties of curricula in thesesocieties enhance the frontiers of knowledge and research whichinspires the next generation. The Department has a major contributionin conducting the classes of Ph.D. students of the University in alltechnical branches. The faculty members also take part in theadministrative affairs of ITER such as those pertaining toexaminations, students' welfare, and other extracurricular activities.

The Departmental library is well stocked with e-library facilities.Plans are afoot to start postgraduate programmes in emerging fields ofmathematics, Computational Fluid Dynamics, Numerical Optimization andStatistical Analysis.

DEPARTMENT OF HUMANITIES & SOCIAL SCIENCES

The Department of Humanities and Social Sciences engages in teachingacross language, culture, society and technology. Our scope isinternational, our approach interdisciplinary. We work at theintersections of economics, management, literature, technicalcommunication and corporate communication. Our areas of emphasisinclude skill development of undergraduate and post-graduate students,awareness-raising exercises, awakening to global trends and diversityof cultures. The learning environment motivates the students to openup to various aspects of social existence. The Department helpsstudents develop the communicative, analytic and cultural insight tosustain themselves in all aspects of their personal and professionallife. The Department consistently works on innovative ways oftraining, keeping in focus the varied sensibility of the students.Further, the Department implements valuable inputs from the industrye.g. the campus-Connect Programme by Infosys. Research scholarsenrolled in the Ph.D. programme are working on communication studies,language, literature, cultural studies, economics and management.

The Department of Humanities and Social Sciences has several segmentslike English for Communication, Business Communication, Human ResourceManagement, Organizational Behaviour and Engineering Economics. It hasbeen imperative throughout the world to include components of softskills, economics and organizational studies in engineeringprogrammes. This gives human face to the use of engineering andtechnology.

The faculty members are engaged in research and their papers have beenpublished in national and international journals of repute. They havealso authored books, which have been widely circulated and acclaimed.

Three digital communication practice laboratories have been setup. Thelaboratory is equipped with DVD camcorders and digital consoles for240 students for language training, the art of presentation, GD andcultural conditioning of body language. Sound systems and motorizedglass beaded screens are in place for personality and soft skillsdevelopment. The laboratories have visitors from other technicalinstitutions. Companies like Infosys and TCS appreciated the corporateambience of the laboratories.

The Department regularly organizes conference, workshop & socialawareness programmes.

The workshop occupies 7500 sq. ft. of covered space. It consists ofFitting Section, Carpentry Section, Smithy Section and WeldingSection, having a list of equipments like power saw, MIG, TIG Weldingand smithy furnaces. The students are evaluated on the basis of theirunderstanding of related theory, workshop performance.

POST GRADUATE & RESEARCH PROGRAMME

MASTER'S PROGRAMME

The Institute provides facilities for teaching at the postgraduatelevel leading to Master of Technology in Electrical, Mechanical,Computer Science and Engineering, Electronics & CommunicationEngineering. The Master of Computer Application (MCA) degree aims tobring out high quality software professionals much needed in business& financial markets.

RESEARCH PROGRAMME

Research is an integral part of teaching and creating new products forindustry. The Institution is building up facilities for conductingpostgraduate level courses parallel with Advanced Technology. Theresearch and development will also lead to publication of scholarlyarticles in International journals. Conferences at national andinternational levels are held in the Institution to motivate thefaculty members to bring all the researchers from various instituteson one platform. Research will also help in building a superiorknowledge base and quality human resource in the Institution. The SOAUniversity has signed MOU with IIT, Bhubaneswar, IMMT, CIPET, Infosys,Wipro, Hexware for collaboration in the field of research anddevelopment.

MICROELECTRONICS LABORATORY

The revolution in microelectronics has led to rapid growth in alldisciplines, especially in the field of military, communications,medical and many other fields from the past half century. It is onlypossible due to the development of tiny semiconductor devices. Thedevelopment and applications of these semiconductor devices willcontinue for years to come. Hence, the exposure of fabricationprocesses of these semiconductor devices is essential to the students,especially for those who are in the electronics disciplines.

A very few semiconductor devices fabrication facilities are availablein educational institutions and Research Organizations in India. As aresult, semiconductor processing exposure to students in poor.Therefore, the Institute of Technical Education and Research (ITER),SOA University is setting up a unique Microelectronics Laboratoryfacility that will offer hands on training to undergraduate and

postgraduate students for their projects. In addition, the proposedlaboratory may be used extensively by research students of differentdisciplines.

The basic semiconductor devices particularly diode processing will bedemonstrated to the students as a vehicle. The MicroelectronicsLaboratory will house all essential IC fabrication equipment, such asOxidation, Diffusion, Lithography, and Metallization in a clean room.Apart from the semiconductor device, this laboratory will have processsimulation facilities. This combination of facilities will help tocarry out the device process steps of simulation results for betterunderstanding of the subject.

The Microelectronics Laboratory will be utilized to study of processesof Micro-Electro-Mechanical-System (MEMS) device fabrication.Furthermore, this laboratory will initiate the activities towards Nanomaterial studies and Nano structure.

MULTI DISCIPLINARY RESEARCH CELL

The outcome of research, besides delving deep into the understandingof the phenomenon of nature, should address a wide variety of issuesfaced by humanity in the real world. The real world problems are quitecomplex and requires convergence of expertise drawn from differentdisciplines or structural barriers. Hence, in recent years there hasbeen a paradigm shift in the research focus from individualdisciplines to the multidisciplinary domain.

At Siksha 'O' Anusandhan University it has been the aim to addressdifferent issues which are multidisciplinary in nature and as a resulta Multi Disciplinary Research (MDR) Cell was established in August2009. Currently research works are being carried out in the followingareas in MDR Cell.

(i) Micro / Nano Electro Mechanical Systems (MEMS / NEMS)(ii) Energy Systems: Digital Protection of Power Networks, Micro-grid

Structures etc.(iii) Biomedical Signal and Image Analysis(iv) Embedded Systems(v) Nano technology for targeted drug delivery systems

It envisages to encompass the following domains of research:(i) Bioinformatics and Computational Biology(ii) Vibration Analysis and Structural Health Monitoring

Collaborative projects with Industry and Institutes are also on theanvil. The MDR Cell functions under the supervision of Prof. P.K.Dash,Director of Research and Consultancy of SOA University and an eminentacademician and former Professor of NIT, Rourkela.

A Research and Development (R & D) Cell has been established in 2009to reinforce the research activities in the Institute. The Cellconsists of active researchers from all the departments under theChairmanship of Professor P.K.Nanda (former Professor, NIT, Rourkela).The following are the broad objectives of the Cell:

(i) To promote research activities and monitor the quality ofresearch work.

(ii) Encourage faculty members to carry out research throughsponsored projects in different areas.

(iii) To organize workshops / seminars / symposia / conferences tokeep pace with the recent advances and cutting edgetechnology.

(iv) Institute Plenary Lecture Series has been introduced whereeminent researchers and scientists from our country and abroadwould be invited to share their expertise and motivate thestudents and staff members.

(v) This cell also encourages and urges faculty members andstudents to pursue their Ph.D. programme.

Currently, 204 numbers of Ph.D. scholars are continuing their researchin the university and as many as 91 candidates in ITER are pursuingtheir research work for Ph.D.

A strong emphasis has been given to the post-graduate and researchprogramme.

Currently in ITER, the research activities in the following area havebeen initiated and developments of exclusive research laboratories areon the anvil.

Video object detection and tracking, visual surveillance:

The prime objective is to detect video objects in both outdoor andindoor environments. Both slow and fast moving single and multipleobject detection schemes have been developed. Tracking objects isintended for visual surveillance. A group of faculty members and fewresearch scholars are working in this scheme. The objective is todevelop a real time object tracker. The Principal investigator of theterm is Prof. P.K.Nanda, Professor, Electronics & CommunicationEngineering.

Digital Protection of Power Networks, Micro grid structures etc.:

Digital Protection of Power Networks using DSP and FFGA; Micro gridanalysis: This team is headed by Prof. P.K.Dash, Director of Research,SOA University, Dr. P.K.Rout and other research scholars are alsoinvolved. The team has a strong base at national and internationallevels.

Biomedical Signal & Image Analysis:

Classification of Biomedical Signals such as EEG, ECG and othersignals will be attempted in this research. Blind source separation ofsignals is also pursued. Dr. Niva Das, Mr. Mihir Narayan Mohanty andother are currently working on this area. In Biomedical imageanalysis, specifically brain MR image segmentation has been addressedto and the team is working as the same lead by Prof. P.K.Nanda, whosedoctoral thesis deals with Brain MR Image segmentation.

Fault diagnosis using the strategies of image analysis and real timeimplementation:

Different image segmentation strategies have been developed to detectcracks in underground pipes and nuclear reactors, faults inpharmaceutical plants, bottling plants etc. In this area,collaboration already exists with ISI Kolkata; real-timeimplementation is currently being pursued. The principal investigatoris Prof. P.K.Nanda.

Condensed matter physics (many-body problems and hi-Tc Superconductor)

The group consists of faculty members who have obtained Ph.D.s fromreputed institutes like IITs, Institute of Physics and abroad.Currently, the group is carrying out theoretical and experimentalresearch in the following areas:

(i)Many-body problems and hi-Tc Super Conductor.(ii) Synthesis and characterization of magnetic semiconductor for

spintronics applications, metallic alloys, multi-ferroic thinfilms, magnetic thin films, and ferroelectric materials. Thisgroup consists of Dr. S. Mishra, Dr. S.K.Kamilla, Dr. (Mrs.) J.Nanda, Dr. V.R.Rao, Dr. P.R.Das.

Vibration and condition monitoring:

This group is headed by Dr. H.C.Das, who supervises research scholarsin vibration analysis. Besides microarray structure analysis is alsobeing carried out and the group is led by Dr. Olga Ivanovna Bylya.

Recently Prof. P.K.Dash, Director of Research has received a projectof Rs. 20 lakhs on "Design and Development of a FPGA adaptive distancerelay for shunt compensated flexible AC transmission system."

MEMS DESIGN CENTER

A very few semiconductor devices fabrication facility are available inteaching Institutions and Research Organization in India; as a result,above said devices processing exposure to students is very poor. Theproposed microelectronics laboratory will have a unique of thisInstitute and this Institute will have edge over any teachingInstitutions.

The state-of-art laboratory in ITER, SOA University unique in Odishawill have the capability of "hands on training to undergraduate andpostgraduate students" in a few months from now. The basicsemiconductor devices processing training to the students can bedemonstrated through the diode fabrication as a vehicle. In addition,large numbers of equipments, such as oxidation, diffusion,lithography, etching and metallization used for fabrication ofIntegrated Circuits (IC) will be exposed to Under and Post graduatestudents. Furthermore students can carry out their one of the selectedprojects under competent faculties, microelectronics laboratory willbe equipped with basic Micro-Electro-Mechanical-System (MEMS)structures fabrication facilities and students may take up challengingprojects in accordance with the National MEMS program called "NationalProgram on Micro and Smart Systems" (NPMASS). The NPMASS program S 'O'A University has already established a MEMS design centre two yearsback (see MDR Cell). Microelectronics laboratory will be extended forPh.D. program in the areas of "developments and process optimizationof different types of materials, including nano materials and MEMSdevice".

Thus, this center offers ample opportunity to the students and facultymembers of the university to carry research activities in thisdirection. Prof. G.C.Bose (former Professor from IIT, Delhi) is theDirector of MEMS Center and Prof. P.K.Nanda (former Professor fromNIT, Rourkela) is the coordinator of this Cell.

CENTRAL LIBRARY

The Central Library stands right at the entrance of the institute withprominence. The library is fully computerized with self-developedsoftware, and this facilitates open access to all users. The librarysupports the institution's programmes to study and research byoffering access to a wide range of materials both printed andelectronic.

Library at ITER is having 28750 titles on Engineering, Science,Mathematics, Economics and Humanities covering almost every subject ofComputers, Management and others with a total of 1,02,032 volumes. Thee-library offers access to EBSCO, SCOPUS, INFLIBNET, INDEST & DELNET.There are magazines, newspapers technical papers for ready referenceand provide book-bank facility for students.

The Central Library being a member of INDEST Consortium under theheads of the Ministry of Human Resources and Development providesonline access to many important Science & Engineering full journalpapers and abstracting database services. The e-Library is an internalpart of the Central Library set up on Greenstone Package. The readingroom of the Central Library is spacious, well ventilated and properlyfurnished so that more than 500 students can study in comfort. Theservices of the digital library can be availed by the faculty members,research scholars and students for their academic development &research activity.

The repository of knowledge, the Central Library provides a keyfeature for learning and research. Besides, housing adequate number oftext and reference books, the library has subscribed many journals. Inaddition to the hard copy versions of the journals quite a good numberof e-journals, have been subscribed to offer ample scope to carry outresearch work in a wide variety of fields, the full text access isavailable in Science Direct-Engineering and Pharmacy (350), Ebsecd'sAcademic complete (8366), Business Premier (3420), Hospitality andTourism Complete (520), Medline (1500), Cinhall (750), Dentistry andOral Science (125), ASME, IEL (IEEE & IET) (187 + 600 +confproceedings) Cambridge University Press (230). All these areaccessible throughout the university campus. In order to facilitatethe students and staff members, a Digital Library section housing 40PCwith internet is established in the Library.

ROBOTICS CLUB

In order to foster the talents of the young under-graduate andgraduates, robotics Club has been established in the institute since2007. Students of different disciplines have actively participated inbuilding robotics from the basic level to advance level. They haveorganized workshops to provide theoretical and hand-on experience tothe aspiring young and bright engineers. The students of thisuniversity have participated in the National level events at IITs,NITs i.e. IIT, Kharagpur, IIT, Bombay, IIT, Madras, IIT Guwahati, NIT,Rourkela, NIT, Warangle and reputed universities and won manyaccolades.

Its constant endeavour in preparing its graduating engineersand MCA graduates in the field of technology has been an epitome ofsuccess over a period of time.

The placement cell, guided by a Professor is committed to provide theyoung techies for a successful career in the industry of their choice.Having proved its mettle in providing talented professionals as perthe needs of the various sectors, the cell provides a well developedholistic training in order to upgrade the students' technical,aptitude as well as communication skills on a regular basis to makethem "corporate ready".

ITER has signed an MOU with Infosys Technologies under the InfosysCampus Connect program to train the final year students. We are proudto be honoured with the Certificate of Accreditation by WiproTechnologies as a "trusted academic partner". Starting 2011, "ProjectCampus", has also been piloted, an initiative of Wipro technologieswhich similarly aims at training its new recruits. We have also signedan MOU with Hexaware Technologies to establish a nodal centre at ITERreferred to as the Hexaware Academic Centre for Excellence (HACE).ITER has been able to appropriately meet the sudden demand in theautomobile sector from companies such as Honda Motors, Ashok Leyland,TVS Motors, Mahindra & Mahindra, having signed an MOU with Mahindra &Mahindra.

We are proud of having successfully placed 403 candidates of 2011pass-out batch in TCS, with a record breaking achievement of about 94%students clearing the on-line test conducted by TCS, the highest amongall the other institutes across the Country, a landmark in theeducation circle. Yet another feather in our cap is Ashok Leylandhaving offered the highest pay package of Rs. 7.5 lakh per annum to 4of our Mechanical engineering students.

FACILITIES

HOSTEL

The Institution provides facilities for hostel accommodation for bothboys and girls. The hostels are spacious, safe and secured with acordial environment and surrounded by pleasant landscapes. A hygienickitchen has been provided in each hostel with large dining halls. Therooms are well furnished. ITER has two in-campus girls' hostelsaccommodating one thousand students. Both the hostels have round theclock Wi-Fi connectivity and medical facility. Similarly, ITER hasfour boys' hostels accommodating one thousand students. Properhygienic condition and strict supervision is maintained throughout.

TRANSPORTATION

ITER has its dedicated transport for the day scholars, covering entireBhubaneswar. Route plans are chalked out keeping in mind theconvenience of the students. The institute has deployed twelve mediumsized buses so as to save time for students in commuting to and fromthe institute.

ANTI-RAGGING CELL

As per Hon'ble Supreme Court's judgement the institute ensures aragging free environment both inside the academic premises andhostels. An anti-ragging cells under the Chairmanship of Prof. (Dr.)B.K.Sarap functions for the prevention of ragging in all its forms.Further, the Cell has senior faculty members as members who counselthe students to be aware of Hon'ble Supreme Court's judgement and howto abide by it.DATA CENTER

It is a facility used to house computer systems and associatedcomponents such as a tele-communication and storage systems thatincludes redundant power supplies, redundant data communicationconnections and security devices.

Its main purpose is running the applications that handle the corebusiness and operational data of the organization. A group of I.T.professional maintain the network operations of the data centre roundthe clock.

SAAT CELL

The cell functions under the Director (Admissions) and otherprofessors as key officials to conduct All India Entrance Test SIKSHA'O' ANUSANDHAN UNIVERSITY ADMISSION TEST (SAAT) for differentprogrammes being offered by the constituent institutes of SOAUniversity.

MEDICAL FACILITY

24 X 7 medical facilities (free consulting & subsidized investigation)in its own medical college and hospital (IMS & SUM Hospital) areprovided to the students.

SUM Hospital, the state-of-the-art ultra modern hospital has 800 beds,150 A/c cabins with multi-specialities along with ICU, ICCU, NICU andPICU.
