We also work towards improving nutritional status of women and children, particularly the marginalized.

Ÿ INDCARE Trust build the skills of Self Help Groups to disseminate key messages on healthy family management approach involving issues such as men’s health like Urinary Tract Infection(UTI), Respiratory Tract Infections(RTI), prostate cancer, diabetes and hypertension. Ÿ INDCARE Trust works for the environment by promoting organic farming, cultivation of medicinal plants and management of natural resource through land, soil, water and energy conservation.

Ÿ INDCARE Trust also aims to contribute, while participating as a grass root level NGO, towards national development goals, millennium development goals and sustainable development goals.

“What counts in life is not the mere fact that we have lived. It is what difference we have

made to the lives of others that will determine the significance of the life we lead.”

~ Nelson Mandela

From the Director’s DeskOver the last thirty years since the inception in 1989, we have become the torchbearers of enabling development into the lives of people. At INDCARE Trust we have supported thousands of people through enterprise development, basic needs ful f i lment, sk i l l development, increasing employability, enhancing entrpreneurial knowledge and strengthening institutions. We are focussed on providing sustainable livelihood to empower marginalised communities especially women.

An important theme that we focus on is that, “women are always told of their duties but never acquainted with their rights.” We step in and enable women to bring a transformation in their lives in the home and further empower them to step out of their homes for a brighter and more secure future. We also connect our various initiatives for instance we link legal experts at our INDCARE College of Law to underprivileged communities especially women to provide them legal guidance on their rights.

Our work in Una, Himachal Pradesh for organic farming and promotion of farmer producer organization is a testament to our work for health, protection of environment, mitigation of climate change and the upliftment of farmers. We are practising new innovations, ideas and techniques in Una such as micro irrigation, shallow well, poly houses, kisan kendra, and cultivation of medicinal plants and herbs for wellness such as shatavari and sarpganda , dragon plant, black wheat, citrus fruits, apples etc.

Our work had humble beginnings in 1989 and now we are celebrating 30 years of strength, progress and empowerment! Our journey represents belief in inclusiveness, the idea that all humans have the right to live their lives with dignity and respect. In this journey, whatever we have achieved has been through the participation of a number of individuals who worked with us, funded us, and contributed their ideas. I thank all of you, especially the team of INDCARE Trust, both past and present who have not only helped the organisation to grow to such a stature that it can now positively impact the lives of the less the fortunate, but have also given valuable inputs into the formulation of this report.Jai Hind, Jai kisan!

For the last three decades INDCARE Trust has been successfully working in different parts of the country with the goal of improving the living conditions and quality of life of the vulnerable communities. The main aim of the organisation is to empower communities through implementation, action and research. We empower the vulnerable especially the women and children through grass root level intervention. Through our 30 year long journey, INDCARE Trust has engaged with a number of organisations and networks at the local, national and international level. This has provided us a helping hand in our goal of enabling communities and working for various themes such as health, gender, agriculture and food security.

Sustainable development is very important for measuring organizational roadmap and thus a common thread in all our programmes is empowering communities through employability and entrepreneurship. Providing the vulnerable population with livelihood opportunities through various programmes has been our mandate from the very beginning. The collective goal is to lead into a future that is secure, dignified and full of opportunities.

Our work has also been guided by the smiles that we have been able to bring on the faces of girls and women all over the country. This has been the most important factor that has motivated us through the last three decades. Our worth is not measured in numbers but through our impact in the lives of people we have touched.

INDCARE Trust has been working in different parts of India in within the span of 30 years and has reached to people in more than ten states. In the present financial year it has covered the states of Delhi, Haryana, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh (Bundelkhand both, urban and rural locations) Orissa, Uttarakhand and Rajasthan.

Our Operating Quarters and Registration DetailsWhile the registered office of INDCARE Trust is in the west, at Vikas Nagar, the office in the South Patel Nagar is well equipped to handle day to day operations. At Una, we first started b y i n t r o d u c i n g technologies for energy saving and water saving to form resources by using which we have d e m o n s t r a t e d a practical model for c h e m i c a l - f r e e cultivation. We used Part ic ipatory Rural Appraisal (PRA) and Participatory Learning and Action (PLA) for learning about and engaging with the communities. It combines an ever-growing toolkit of participatory methods intended to facilitate a process of collective analysis and learning. The community witnessed how in our pilot project we could grow tomato, cucumber, green pepper and other green vegetables in the land that could not yield much and was c o n s i d e r e d a s banjar zameen. Their interest was a l s o g e n e ra t e d when we did not use chemicals and p e s t i c i d e s b u t i n s t e a d u s e d natural ingredients like gau mutra, cow dung, panch gavya, neem spray and lassi which are locally available ingredients that were earlier considered useless by the local mindset, to nourish that land. The next step was to scale up and we first started working on natural resource management on a bigger scale. Thus we focused on soil conservation, leaving aside the historically chemical-fed agricultural land which was infertile for crop production. We have focused on barren and neglected land that is referred to as 'banjar zameen' and we have encouraged farmers that have barren land from 2 canals to 1 acre or more to participate.

“Chemical free”- Organic - Medicinal Farming & Farmer Producer Organisation

INDCARE

It is also an inclusive agenda that provides equal access for all. Secondly, water harvesting and soi l conservation programmes have been initiated on a larger scale after our pilot project so that farmers are gaining knowledge to implement in their fields too. Our initiative for building shallow wells while also assessing subsidies from agriculture department has motivated farmers for sustainable management of natural resources. Another example that the farmer community has now adopted is inter cropping. Our NGO has set these examples as a step forward for building the potential for "go-green" enterprises.

An unusual element that we have introduced is location-specific options for agricultural products. For instance, bringing flora and fauna production that has never been grown in Una but is very beneficial. One example is how Dragon tree (Dracaeno draco) was introduced keeping in mind the lack of water, as it uses less amount of water, it is temperature resistant, and is resistant to the monkey menace which greatly affects other crops in Una. It also provided a new aesthetic and the fruit is highly valued in the market.

Another example is Blackwheat, farmers have grown wheat for many years but the introduction of Blackwheat is changing the landscape of Una because it is sustainable in the weather and is highly valued in the market which provides the farmers with new financial opportunities. We have also focused on good health and thus cultivated medicinal plants and herbs for wellness such as Shatavari (asparagus r a c e m o s u s ) a n d S a r p g a n d a (rauvolfiaserpentina). These are also highly valued in the market, providing better avenues for farmers.

Thus we have been successful in introducing these new and different varieties for the benefit of farmers. A centre for “Kisan Kendra” has also been established which provides constant support to the farmers and is continuously building capacity regarding farming techniques, a collective leadership and sustainable development.

Another important issue that we have focused on is climate change mitigation. Through innovative techniques such as micro irrigation, shallow well, organic manure, polyhouses, vermicomposting, and water harvesting we have prevented the use of non-renewable resources and also provides sustainable alternatives to the marginalized community who are presently depended on resource harmful for the environment. We have also worked with the Agricultural Technology Management Agency - ATMA scheme for sustainable development in the agriculture sector.

We are creating a community of farmers around this project through Farmer Producer Organisation (FPO), this has not only created employment but is also a good source for the farmers to access government schemes for credit, enterprise development and sustainable livelihood. INDCARE Trust has used scientific planning with a participatory approach. Our vision for this initiative has always been to build community ownership for local stakeholders for sustainable growth of rural communities at a rapid pace.

The World Bank estimates that India is one of the highest ranking countries in the world for the number of children suffering from malnutrition. Children in the age group 0-6 years constitute around 158 million of the population of India (2011 census). 44% of these are underweight. Additionally 72% of infants have anemia. Research has conclusively shown that malnutrition during pregnancy causes the child to have increased risk of future diseases, physical retardation, and reduced cognitive abilities. 56.2% of total women suffer from anemia and have lower than normal levels of blood hemoglobin. Among pregnant women, anemia has increased from 50% to almost 58%. Poverty and poor purchasing power have been identified as two major factors responsible for low dietary intake. The government has initiated major nutritional intervention programmes to improve the health status of women and children and bring down mortality.

Launched on 2nd October, 1975, the Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS) Scheme is one of the flagship programmes of the Government of India and represents one of the world's largest and unique programmes for early childhood care and development. It is the foremost symbol of country's commitment to its children and nursing mothers, as a response to the challenge of providing pre-school non-formal education on one hand and breaking the vicious cycle of malnutrition, morbidity, reduced learning capacity and mortality on the other. Since the mother is as important for the child, the ICDS program also focuses on the needs of pregnant women, adolescent children, lactating mothers through a vast network of 'Aanganwaris' or ICDS centers.

INDCARE Trust with its various efforts in a number of areas in Delhi, in collaboration with the Ministry of Women and Chi ld development, has tried to make the Right to Food, through the ICDS, as accessible as it can be. Through this attempt, 49 Self-help groups were also linked to the scheme and 490 women got employment. At present, 30% of the total assets is also held by these women. This is a remarkable achievement in itself. Moreover, we created a self sustaining model through one of our initiatives, Jan Aahar, which provide low cost, nutritious, hygienic meals for the needy.

INDCARE

Right to Food -ICDS

INDCARE Trust has equipped adolescent girls to improve and upgrade their home-based and vocational skills, and promoted their overall development, including awareness about their health, personal hygiene, nutrition and family welfare and management. This was under the Rajiv Gandhi Scheme for Empowerment of Adolescent Girls – SABLA, where the main objective was to improve the nutritional and health status of adolescent girls in the age group of 11-18 years and empowers them by providing education in life-skills, health and nutrition. Awareness was also imparted about Adolescent Reproductive and Sexual Health (ARSH), and family and child care.

.Besides nutrition and health, trainings were also provided in areas such as confidence building, self-awareness and self-esteem, decision making, critical thinking, communication skills, rights & entitlement, coping with stress and responding to peer pressure, functional literacy, etc.

Since 2010, INDCARE Trust has been working in the districts of the districts of Nagloi, Mangolpuri and Shahabad Dairy for providing nutritious food to poor and low-income group people working in factories, shops and other establishments. This initiative is under the Jan Aahar scheme which has been launched by the Delhi Government under which poor and low-income group people will be offered nutritious and delicious meal twice a day at a low price of Rs 15/- ( revised rate 18/- ). This is our initiative to create a self-sustaining model that promotes self-reliance for women and good health for all. Women from Self Help Groups promoted by our NGO are engaged to procure raw materials, cook food as per requirement and prescribe by the norms by Department of Women and Child Development.SHG women groups have got proper training by INDCARE Trust for cooking, packing and maintaining r e c o r d s . T h i s c o m b i n e s o u r resolve for women empowerment and a l s o p r o m o t e s health and wellness through proper nutrition.

The greatest invisibility of women prevails in health issues. Reproductive health strategies include education for responsible and healthy sexuality, safe and appropriate contraception and services for STD, RTI, pregnancy and abortion. At INDACRE Trust we not only work on women's health but also support research, development and awareness for men's health & focus on health issues for men and women both such as prevention of Prostate Cancer, Urinary Tract Infection, as well as Breast Cancer and Cervical Cancer.

The organization also strongly believe that the root of Indian traditional practices lies in maintaining coherence and balance with humans and nature. For this the organisation is in the process to develop Una, Himachal Pradesh as the hub of research and development of Naturopathy, Yoga and Ayurveda centre to ensure the outreach to all parts of India. This comprehensive programme for health and wellness would be a one of a kind initiative to promote the true Indian vision for a healthy body and mind through alternative medicines.

Adoption of Reproductive Health Care as one of the Core InterventionsINDCARE Trust has adopted the following objectives in relation to the issues of Reproductive health Care:Ÿ To achieve maximum immunization of all the children in the project areas.Ÿ To ensure counseling to the RTIS, STIS and other needy women.Ÿ To motivate and sensitize people towards reproductive health through

advocacy measures as well as IEC activities.Ÿ To promote the use of medicinal plants for a better and healthy lifestyle for

instance in our initiative for organic farming and livelihood development in Una, Himachal Pradesh, such as Shatavari and Sarpganda .

Strategies Adopted by INDCARE Trust to Achieve the Above GoalsŸ Institutional strengthening of the network for reproductive & child healthŸ Effectively implementing the plan and gradually decentralizing itŸ Interlinking it with other schemesŸ Intensifying research in Institutes of Health, Research and Training

institutionŸ Developing a mechanism for monitoring and evaluation for proper

utilization of resourcesŸ Using means like clinics and awareness camps in rural and urban areas, for

Our Governing Body and Structure A Board of Trustees governs INDCARE Trust. The General Body Meeting is held annually on the 7th of September, each year. During this meeting, the progress of the organization and its projects are reviewed and future plans are discussed. Financial and physical achievements are assessed and goals are set. Financial targets and budgets for the forthcoming year are decided.

About our Managing Trustee and Founder Mrs. Reeva Sood, is a sociologist by training and undertook her studies in Personal Management, Labour Welfare and Micro finance in India and abroad. She has been a scholar of the Harvard school in Financial Institution for Private Enterprise Development. In the mid-80's, Mrs. Reeva Sood became interested in gender issues at large, especially in their role in socio-economic development in urban as well as in rural sectors of the society. She was amongst a very early group of professionals from the 'social/development sector' in India to translate this interest into formal employment and entrepreneurship for women through micro-finance with the Government and other national and international partners. INDCARE College of Law was also established through her past experiences in this field where women lacked legal support in the face of atrocities. She has been working for the right to food and the right to livelihood through various initiatives. Additionally, while focusing on health and wellness, Mrs. Reeva Sood has worked on health issues for men and women. With an aim to use alternative medicine, medicinal plants and organic produce for a healthier lifestyle, she has initiated chemical-free farming in Una, Himachal Pradesh. This is proving to be beneficial for the environment too. In this project, she has focussed on the socio-economic upliftment of farmers by providing them with linkages with governmental schemes, banks and the market.

INDCARE Trust operationalizes themes in the areas of entrepreneurship, citizenship, empowerment, employment, environment, health and development. INDCARE Trust's objective is to test new approaches, catalyze, sponsor and support the development and implementation of cutting edge and innovative interventions.

This is our mission because our NGO wants to expand the set of economic opportunities available to the marginalized communities, especially the women in developing countries today while actively measuring, evaluating, disseminating and learning from results. We have initiated a sustained global affiliation with the government to incubate self-sustaining and home-grown women investment initiatives and financing facilities in key regions and are looking forward to contributions by committed corporates and organisations.

We are also working towards an action-oriented research agenda which corrects a bias that could release micro-finance to millions of eligible, credit-constrained and excluded women across the country using existing Micro Finance and Banking infrastructure and with a technology portal that connects Women Self Help Group’s micro-enterprise and financiers together. Our initiatives for the protection of the environment are important to mitigate climate change and also unleash natural resource management potential. Our work in health and wellness is a part of our comprehensive mission to provide wellness opportunities to all. From our health services for men and women to our medicinal plant cultivation and Naturopathy, Yoga and Ayurveda centre, our aim has always been to empower the marginalized communities.
