CORRECTION DOES MUCH, BUT ENCOURAGE-MENT DOES MORE.

JOHANN WOLFGANG VON GOETHE

YUGMARG, CHANDIGARH, FRIDAY, APRIL 15, 2022

EDITORIALA connected worldThe word, ‘contact’, when used in a particular

context, has a distasteful connotation. Never-theless, many people envy those who enjoy a

reputation of having useful ‘contacts’ in importantplaces. These contacts are used to one’s advantagewhenever the need arises. I have observed people dex-terously and single-mindedly establishing and culti-vating contacts for future referrals. But I think that Iwould be rather upset if I knew that people were so-cializing with me with the sole intention of getting meto put in a good word for them or their candidates inthe right quarters.

Another loaded term is ‘source’ — meant not asorigin but as an individual who can help you to getsomething you want. I suspect that this usage is pecu-liar to Indians. The following is an example of howthis word is used: “He has a source who can get yourniece a seat in that institution”. Somehow, the termstrikes me as unsavoury.

A third term, related to the word, contacts, is con-nections. In my mind, it is a good and solid word be-cause it implies deep-rooted relations and mutual sup-port unlike the term, contacts, or the shady word, source. It really is wonderful to be connected — topeople, to nature and to oneself. Associated with theterm, connections, is the concept of ‘networking’. Thepractice of networking yields a web of relationsamong your kind. Four types of computer network-ing I learned about are LAN, PAN, MAN and WANand I used to wonder whether these types of networkscould be applied to people as well. Teachers, doctors, lawyers and business people actually network in sim-ilar ways: locally, in personal areas, in metropolitancities and in the ‘wide world’ area. They network ef-ficiently and effectively to their mutual benefit, learn-ing from one another, sharing resources and exchang-ing ideas. This interaction is, of course, greatly facil-itated by information and communication technologyand by various virtual platforms. Incidentally, net-working helped me recently in a curious way. A cou-ple of months ago, I mentioned to a friend, a schoolprincipal in Mumbai, that our school required a Psy-chology teacher urgently, and it was pretty much net-working that produced one for us in Calcutta. Myfriend’s colleague had a huge WhatsApp communityof Psychology teachers and she posted my require-ment on this group. Within days, I found a young Psy-chology teacher. Young people in the West are taughthow to network in a structured way. They are encour-aged to reach out to people they may not have met buthad heard of. I suppose the ‘old school tie’ representsa form of networking, but you don’t have to belong toan exclusive club or a particular association in orderto network.

Biden approves $800M in newmilitary assistance for Ukraine

In anticipation of a new Russian offen-sive in eastern Ukraine, President JoeBiden has approved an 800 million

package of military assistance, includingadditional helicopters and the first provi-sion of American artillery.

The Ukrainians also will receive ar-mored personnel carriers, armoredHumvees, naval drone vessels used incoastal defense, and gear and equipmentused to protect soldiers in chemical, bio-logical, nuclear and radiological attacks.

This new package of assistance willcontain many of the highly effectiveweapons systems we have already provid-ed and new capabilities tailored to thewider assault we expect Russia to launch ineastern Ukraine, Biden said in a statement.

The steady supply of weapons the Unit-ed States and its allies and partners haveprovided to Ukraine has been critical insustaining its fight against the Russian in-vasion, Biden added. It has helped ensurethat (Russia President Vladimir) Putinfailed in his initial war aims to conquer andcontrol Ukraine. We cannot rest now.

Biden announced the aid after a callwith Ukrainian President Volodymyr Ze-lenskyy. It is the latest in a series of U.S. se-curity assistance packages valued at a com-bined 2.6 billion that has been committedto Ukraine since Russia invaded on Feb.24. The weaponry and support material hasplayed an important role in Ukraine's suc-cessful defense thus far.

Biden is under pressure from membersof both parties in Congress to expand andaccelerate U.S. aid.

Robert Gates, a former CIA directorand defense secretary, said Wednesday hebelieves the administration needs to pushhard for weapon donations by NATO mem-bers in Eastern Europe, whose arsenals in-clude Soviet-era tanks and other weaponryand equipment that could help Ukraine im-mediately.

The United States ought to be acting,24/7 how do we mobilize the equipment

and how do we get it into Ukraine and intothe hands of the Ukrainians, Gates said inan online forum sponsored by the CarnegieEndowment for International Peace.

It's critically important and criticallyurgent, and we ought to be sort of ransack-ing the arsenals of those states, and I thinkthey would be cooperative, particularly ifthey are given assurances that the Pentagonwill provide American replacements for thedonated weapons.

The Pentagon said the 800 millionpackage announced by Biden includesweapons and equipment that will requiresome training for a Ukrainian military notfully accustomed to American militarytechnology. U.S. and allied forces had beenpresent inside Ukraine to provide trainingfor eight years before pulling out in ad-vance of the Russia's latest invasion.

The new arms package includes 18 ofthe U.S. Army's 155mm howitzers and40,000 artillery rounds, two air surveil-lance radars, 300 Switchblade kamikazearmed drones, and 500 Javelin missiles de-signed to knock out tanks and other armor. Also included are 10 counter-artilleryradars used to track incoming artillery andother projectiles to determine their point oforigin for counter attacks.

Pentagon press secretary John Kirbysaid delivery of the material will be expe-dited, but he offered no specific timetable.

This list came directly out of multipleconversations with Ukrainians in the lastfew days as we began to see the Russiansnow start to reprioritize the Donbas fight,he said, referring to Russia's shift from afailed offensive in Ukraine's north aimed atKyiv, the capital, to a force buildup in the

country's eastern Donbas region, whereRussian-backed separatists have beenfighting since 2014.

Ukrainian military personnel will needtraining on the radars as well as the how-itzers and the Switchblade drones, Kirbysaid. He said the training may be done byU.S. soldiers in Europe and the arrange-ments are being worked out. These are nothighly complex systems, Kirby said, and soextensive training will not likely be re-quired. Among the other items in the pack-age are 11 Soviet-era Mi-17 helicoptersthat the United States had planned to pro-vide to Afghanistan before Biden last yeardecided to fully withdraw from the country. They are transport helicopters that also canfunction in an attack role. The Pentagonpreviously had sent five Mi-17s to Ukraine,Kirby said.

World Bank lowers Pakistan'sgrowth forecast to 4.3pc

Citing the additional bur-den on the budget putby the last-ditch energy

subsidies by the outgoing Im-ran Khan government, theWorld Bank on Wednesday re-duced Pakistan's economicgrowth rate forecast for thecurrent fiscal year by almostone per cent, reported localmedia.

"The financing of theprice cuts or subsidies can cre-ate an additional burden on thefiscal budget, threaten the on-going programme with the In-ternational Monetary Fund(IMF), and limit the use of thefiscal budget on other, moreproductive projects", theDawn newspaper quoted theWorld Bank as saying aheadof the IMF-WB AnnualSpring Meetings beginningearly next week.

Terming these subsidiesas 'unsustainable and ineffec-tive', the bank's Chief Econo-mist for South Asia RegionHans Timmer advocated thatthe right prices should becharged to consumers and re-distributed to poor house-holds.

"While these measurescan help reduce fluctuations indomestic prices, also consti-tute a direct burden or hidden

liability on the government'sbudget, which could increasefiscal vulnerabilities goingforward. GDP growth is ex-pected to slow to 4.3 per centin FY22 (against 5.6 per centlast year) and to 4 per cent inFY23," said the bank.

The bank noted that Pak-istan had earlier followed itsagreement with the IMF to re-move tax exemptions and in-crease the tax on fuels. How-ever, rising energy prices do-mestically and challengesfrom political oppositionforced the government to offer

electricity and fuel price reliefin February, according to themedia outlet. Noting that ener-gy subsidies are one of Pak-istan's challenges in the cur-rent environment, the banksaid that inflation will reachdouble digits in the countrybefore subsiding in 2023. Fur-ther, accumulated governmentdebt in Pakistan during theCOVID-19 pandemic maylead to fiscal consolidationmeasures as general govern-ment debt has reached over 70per cent of GDP, reported themedia outlet.

Sunscreens can better protect skinwith potent antioxidants

According to a new study, sun-screen does not protect the skinas well as it could because there

is a key ingredient that is missing fromall these creams.

The study was published in thejournal, 'Antioxidants'.

The missing ingredient is a class ofantioxidants (a type of stable molecule)commonly found in nature. Experi-ments have shown that these antioxi-dant molecules eliminate excess iron incells, thereby helping cells maintain ahealthy level of free radicals (a type ofunstable molecule). Free radicals andfree iron are strongly linked to skindamage.

"By including these potent antioxi-dants in skin-care products and sun-screen formulations, and therefore trap-ping free iron, we can expect to get anunprecedented level of protection fromthe sun," said Dr Charareh Pourzand,

who led the research from the Depart-ment of Pharmacy & Pharmacologyand the Centre for Therapeutic Innova-tion at the University of Bath. Scientistshave known for some time that iron de-posits promote the appearance of age-ing, but the latest study highlights theinterplay between free iron and freeradicals in the skin. As a result of theirfindings, Dr Pourzand urged skin-caremanufacturers to look more closely atopportunities to include iron-trappingextracts in their products. A number ofiron-trapping natural extracts have al-ready been identified in the Bath lab(these include several classes of botan-ical, fungal and marine-based com-pounds, among them, extracts fromcertain vegetables, fruits, nuts, seeds, bark and flowers), however, DrPourzand said more research is neededbefore any of these compounds are fitfor commercial purpose.

Pre-schoolers can develop reading skills in virtual classroomAccording to a new study,

children can develop keyreading skills in a virtual

classroom with other students. Thestudy was published in the journal,'Frontiers in Human Neuroscience'.

Researchers said their "ReadingCamp" program demonstrates notonly the effectiveness of the ap-proach but also the potential toreach larger numbers of studentsremotely, by necessity or by choice.

"Children are ready to learn toread at the age of 5. But the pan-demic robbed children of the op-portunity for in-person reading in-struction. What we've shown hereis that an online Reading Camp de-signed to promote learning sociallyworks phenomenally well. An on-line camp can be used all over theworld by children anywhere, and

that is truly exciting," said facultyauthor Patricia Kuhl, co-director ofI-LABS and a UW professor ofspeech and hearing sciences.

It detailed a two-week readingprogram, which teachers providedremotely to 83 5-year-olds begin-

ning in fall 2020.Learning to read involves a se-

ries of steps, from recognizing dis-tinguished sounds in a language(phonological awareness), to iden-tify the names of individual lettersand how they sound (letter-sound

knowledge), to decoding wordsand their meanings.

The study found that the partic-ipants demonstrated learning ofspecific reading skills, such asphonological awareness and letter-sound knowledge, when comparedto a control group of children whodid not receive the instruction.

I-LABS researchers, includingstudy co-author Jason Yeatman(now at Stanford University), 2019offered a two-week reading sum-mer camp to teach early literacyskills to pre-kindergarteners andmeasure brain activity before andafter instruction. With the onset ofthe pandemic in spring 2020, re-searchers decided to adapt the in-person Reading Camp into an on-line version over Zoom.

Ahead of the remote camp, re-

searchers mailed parents a kit ofmaterials, which included head-phones, worksheets and books, aswell as Play-Doh, toys and otherfun items for use in the lessons.Children used coloured plastic eggsfrom the kit, for example, to "vote"for the right answer in their virtualclassroom, rather than raising ahand.

The Reading Camp groupedchildren into six-person class-rooms, each with two instructorstrained in the specific skills les-sons. Sessions lasted three hours aday, with several breaks, short les-sons broken up by activities, andending with a storytime. The class-rooms were often broken into evensmaller, three-student breakoutrooms, each with a teacher to focusthe lessons and games.

"This shows that we can actual-ly teach kids online if we're usingthe correct methodology, keepingthem engaged, and they're interact-ing socially with their peers andteachers," said Yael Weiss-Zruya, aresearch scientist at I-LABS andthe study's first author.

"Combining all of this made itsuccessful," he added.

Children in both the ReadingCamp and control groups took sev-eral standardized and non-stan-dardized tests to assess knowledgeof letters, sounds and words. Theresults showed that the ReadingCamp participants improved in allof the reading skills measured, andtheir phonological awareness andknowledge of lowercase letters andsounds, in particular, more than thechildren in the control group.

handigarh/ Moga : Farmers are queueing up near Moga in Punjab Cand Haryana’s Kaithal district, with

vehicle queues as-long-as 5 kms, leading to high-tech grain storage facilities. Not long ago in February 2021, amidrising protestagainst the government’s Farm Bills, it was these farmers only, whowereblocking good trains in Moga, Punjab. The agitators, assembled at Dagru railway station, stopped a wheat-laden train carrying food grains to a storage facility set up by Adani Group in the village.According to the farmers, the much-debated three farm bills were lop-sided to favour the big corporates as these bills were believed to remove the provision of MSP, leaving them at the mercy of corporates – who will dictate the terms of pricing the farm produce. Interestingly, now when the farm bills have been withdrawn, they are reaching the same facilities to sell their produce, which they were earlier opposing. In Kaithal alone on Tuesday, the storage facility recorded procurement of 9800 MT, carried to the facility in over 2000 goods vehicles. At the height of the agitation in 2021, protest groups were spreading rumours that Adani’s storage facility came up along with the announcement of the farm bills in 2020, pointing fingers towards the group being the real beneficiary of the new law.

Below-the-knee angioplasty is an effective treatment for peripheral artery disease (PAD)anchkula , April 13--: Estimates suggest that there are about 41 to 54 million cases of peripheral artery disease (PAD) in India. Some of the risk factors of this condition include PType 2 diabetes, smoking, and hypercholesterolemia which can cause a plaque build-up

in the arteries over time. There is a need to raise awareness on the risk factors, prevention, and new treatment options for PAD.In people with PAD, there is reduced blood flow to a body part outside of the heart or brain. Commonly it involves arteries that lead to the legs and feet and is the outcome of atherosclerosis, a condition where fatty deposits build-up in the arterial walls. Speaking about this, Dr Akhil Monga, Associate Consultant, Neuro and Vascular Interventional Radiology, Paras Hospital, Panchkula, said, “There is a smooth lining in healthy arteries which prevents blood from clotting and promotes steady flow. However, people with peripheral artery disease (PAD) have arteries that are narrow or blocked due to plaque build-up. Plaque is composed of excessive fat, cholesterol and other substances floating through the bloodstream. When the arteries are blocked, blood cannot flow to the legs thereby causing damage to the tissues. Depending on level and degree of involvement, the symptoms of PAD include intermittent pain during activity in the thighs, buttocks, calves or feet; numbness or pins and needles sensation; discoloration or ulceration of skin and sometimes gangrene.”

Rohit Sharma fined Rs 24 lakhfor slow over-rate

AGENCYPUNE, APRIL 14

Mumbai Indians have been finedfor slow over-rate during theirmatch against Punjab Kings underthe IPL's Code of Conduct here atthe Maharashtra Cricket Associa-tion Stadium.

This was Mumbai Indiansteam's second offence of the sea-son under the Code of Conduct re-lating to a minimum over-rate of-fence. Mumbai Indians captainRohit Sharma was fined Rs 24lakh and the rest of the members inthe playing eleven were fined Rs 6lakh or 25 per cent of their matchfee, whichever is lower.

It was a double blow for thefive-time champions as they suc-cumbed to a 12-run defeat whichwas their fifth loss of the seasonfailing to chase the 199-run targetand they are yet to win a match inthe ongoing season. Moreover, both the captain and the team-mates faced fines.

AGENCYPUNE, APR 14

Mumbai Indians coach Mahela Jayawardenesays it's just a "matter of time" before skip-per Rohit Sharma plays a big knock, some-thing which his team desperately needs to ar-rest its slide in IPL-15.

The MI captain has failed to capitaliseon the starts, managing just 108 runs at anaverage of 21.60 this season.

"If you look at the way he starts, the wayhe hits the ball, it's brilliant. He's timing it,he's getting some really, really good starts.Yes he's disappointed as well, that he's notbeing able to convert them," Jayawardenesaid.

"We've seen Rohit batting deep, batting

for 14-15 overs and getting those big scores. It's just a matter of time. He's a quality play-er and I am not concerned about the form assuch."

MI on Wednesday suffered a 12-run lossat the hands of Punjab Kings -- their fifthsuccessive defeat -- to inch closer to elimi-nation.

Chasing 199, Rohit (28) and Ishan Kis-han (3) got out cheaply as MI were foundstruggling at 32 for 2 in 4.1 overs.

Young Dewald Brevis (49 off 25) andTilak Varma (36 off 20) added 84 runs for thethird wicket after MI decided to hold backSuryakumar Yadav, who came out to bat atnumber five, instead of his usual position atfour.

Suryakumar made 43 off 30 balls before

being dismissed in the 19th over."Today was to try and take the game

deep, because we were playing with six bat-ters. And there's no better person than Suryato finish a game off," Jayawardene said.

"In the powerplay, they would swing theball a bit and all that. So I didn't want Suryato go into that situation and not be able toplay his natural game also. It was just a tac-tical thing."

The 44-year-old said the idea was to givethe youngsters more freedom in the middleas Suryakumar and Kieron Pollard play therole of finishers. "The two young guys, weknow what they are capable of. So giventhem a bit of freedom to go and control thatsituation, so that Polly and Surya are able tochase that. That was the initial thinking.

I am not concerned aboutRohit's form: Jayawardene
