Stewardship Perspective: Acts 2:1 – “When the day of Pentecost arrived, they were all together in one place.” Notice that Pentecost is actually an Old Testament festival. It happens around the time when the wheat and oats are ready to be brought in. In the New Testament, this becomes a picture and foreshadowing of the great harvest of humankind that God means to bring in through the preaching of His Word. God gives the seed, and God brings about the harvest – through the work of His Church.

Large Print editions of our Sunday worship folders are available from the ushers. If you are in need of one, don’t hesitate to ask!

June 9, 2019 AS WE GATHER Earth, water, wind, and fire—the primordial elements of creation—provide a finite structure for our access to the infinite God descending for us through Word and Sacrament. From dust of earth our bodies have been created, and to dust we shall return. Nevertheless, we are the bearers of God’s presence in the world. In the waters of Holy Baptism, we are washed and sealed as divine sons and daughters. The breath of God hovering over the waters at creation hovers also over baptismal waters, where new life in Christ begins. That Jesus would baptize with the Holy Spirit and with fire was foretold by John the Baptist. This fire is the consuming love of God, a crucible through which the dross of sin and death is removed, and the gold of faith and life is refined. Come, Holy Spirit!

WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS RINGING OF THE BELLS PRELUDE AND MEDITATION “Den Signede Dag” Wilbur Held The sanctuary is a place of meditation and preparation for worship. Therefore, as the prelude begins, we cease our conversations and quiet our hearts to converse silently with God.

OPENING HYMN “O Day Full of Grace” LSB 503

INVOCATION P: In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. C: Amen. PENTECOST CATECHISM (From Dr. Martin Luther's Small Catechism) P: What is the work of the Holy Spirit? C: I believe that I cannot by my own reason or strength believe in

Jesus Christ, my Lord, or come to Him; but the Holy Spirit has called me by the Gospel, enlightened me with His gifts, sanctified and kept me in the true faith; Even as He calls, gathers, enlightens, and sanctifies the whole Christian church on earth, and keeps it with Jesus Christ in the one true faith.

P: And what is that one true faith? C: I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth.

And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day he rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father almighty. From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of Saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

P: How does the Holy Spirit work in the Christian Church today? C: In this Christian Church, He daily and richly forgives all sins to

me and all believers. P: What has the Holy Spirit led you to believe about yourself? C: I believe that I am a sinner. I know this from God's Word and the

Ten Commandments. I have not kept them. I am sorry for my sin and I know that as a sinner, I deserve God's punishment.

P: Call then upon God, and repent of your sins. C: Merciful Father, I am sorry for my sins and desire to turn away

from them. Forgive me for the sake of Your Son, Jesus Christ, who died and rose again that I might be set free.

P: As a called and ordained servant of the Word, I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.

3

C: Amen. I believe that when the called ministers of Christ absolve those who repent of their sins and are willing to amend, this is as valid and certain, in heaven also, as if Christ, our dear Lord, dealt with us Himself.

P: You are richly blessed! The Holy Spirit gives you the power to become the children of God, and to "devote yourselves to the apostles' teachings" as you have just confessed, to "the fellowship" which we share at this very moment, "the breaking of bread," and to "prayer" in this service and in daily life. What will the Holy Spirit accomplish in the end times?

C: He will at the Last Day raise me and all the dead, and give to me and all believers in Christ eternal life. This is most certainly true!

SONG OF PRAISE “Holy Spirit, Rain Down” ABS (2) 136 (Chorus) Holy Spirit, rain down, rain down. O Comforter and Friend,

how we need Your touch again. Holy Spirit, rain down, rain down. Let Your power fall, Let Your voice be heard.

Come and change our hearts as we stand on Your word. Holy Spirit, rain down. (Repeat first time)

No eye has seen, no ear has heard, No mind can know what God has in store.

So open up heaven, open it wide. Over Your church and over our lives. (Chorus)

PRAYER OF THE DAY P: The Lord be with you. C: And also with you. P: Let us pray. O God, on this day You once taught the hearts of Your

faithful people by sending them the light of Your Holy Spirit. C: Grant us in our day by the same Spirit to have a right

understanding in all things and evermore to rejoice in His holy consolation;

P: through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit,

C: one God, now and forever. Amen.

SERVICE OF THE WORD

OLD TESTAMENT READING Genesis 11:1–9

(The tower of Babel: one language confused and many people scattered) 1Now the whole earth had one language and the same words. 2 And as people migrated from the east, they found a plain in the land of Shinar and settled there. 3 And they said to one another, “Come, let us make bricks, and burn them thoroughly.” And they had brick for stone, and bitumen for mortar. 4 Then they said, “Come, let us build ourselves a city and a tower with its top in the heavens, and let us make a name for ourselves, lest we be dispersed over the face of the whole earth.” 5 And the LORD came down to see the city and the tower, which the children of man had built. 6 And the LORD said, “Behold, they are one people, and they have all one language, and this is only the beginning of what they will do. And nothing that they propose to do will now be impossible for them. 7 Come, let us go down and there confuse their language, so that they may not understand one another's speech.” 8 So the LORD dispersed them from there over the face of all the earth, and they left off building the city. 9 Therefore its name was called Babel, because there the LORD confused the language of all the earth. And from there the LORD dispersed them over the face of all the earth.

L: This is the Word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God. SECOND READING Acts 2:1–21

(The Holy Spirit fills Jesus’ gathered followers, energizing them to tell of God’s mighty works.)

1When the day of Pentecost arrived, they were all together in one place. 2 And suddenly there came from heaven a sound like a mighty rushing wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. 3 And divided tongues as of fire appeared to them and rested on each one of them. 4 And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance. 5 Now there were dwelling in Jerusalem Jews, devout men from every nation under heaven. 6 And at this sound the multitude came together, and they were bewildered, because each one was hearing

5

them speak in his own language. 7 And they were amazed and astonished, saying, “Are not all these who are speaking Galileans? 8 And how is it that we hear, each of us in his own native language? 9 Parthians and Medes and Elamites and residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, 10 Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya belonging to Cyrene, and visitors from Rome, 11 both Jews and proselytes, Cretans and Arabians—we hear them telling in our own tongues the mighty works of God.” 12 And all were amazed and perplexed, saying to one another, “What does this mean?” 13 But others mocking said, “They are filled with new wine.” 14 But Peter, standing with the eleven, lifted up his voice and addressed them: “Men of Judea and all who dwell in Jerusalem, let this be known to you, and give ear to my words. 15 For these people are not drunk, as you suppose, since it is only the third hour of the day. 16 But this is what was uttered through the prophet Joel: 17 “‘And in the last days it shall be, God declares, that I will pour out my Spirit on all flesh, and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams; 18 even on my male servants and female servants in those days I will pour out my Spirit, and they shall prophesy. 19 And I will show wonders in the heavens above and signs on the earth below, blood, and fire, and vapor of smoke; 20 the sun shall be turned to darkness and the moon to blood, before the day of the Lord comes, the great and magnificent day. 21 And it shall come to pass that everyone who calls upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.’

L: This is the Word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God. RESPONSE “Consuming Fire” ABS (2) 134

There must be more than this; Oh breath of God, come breathe within. There must be more than this; Spirit of God we wait for You.

Fill us anew, we pray; Fill us anew, we pray.

(Chorus)

Consuming fire, fan into flame A passion for Your name. Spirit of God, fall in this place, Lord, have Your way. Lord, have Your way with us.

Come like a rushing wind, Clothe us in power from on high. Now set the captives free; Leave us abandoned to Your praise.

Lord, let Your glory fall. Lord, let Your glory fall. (Chorus)

HOLY GOSPEL John 14:23–31 (Jesus promises that the Father will send the Holy Spirit as the Counselor.)

P: The Holy Gospel according to St. Luke, the twenty-fourth chapter. C: (Spoken) Glory to You, O Lord. 23 Jesus answered him, “If anyone loves me, he will keep my word, and my Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him. 24 Whoever does not love me does not keep my words. And the word that you hear is not mine but the Father's who sent me. 25 “These things I have spoken to you while I am still with you. 26 But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you. 27 Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid. 28 You heard me say to you, ‘I am going away, and I will come to you.’ If you loved me, you would have rejoiced, because I am going to the Father, for the Father is greater than I. 29 And now I have told you before it takes place, so that when it does take place you may believe. 30 I will no longer talk much with you, for the ruler of this world is coming. He has no claim on me, 31 but I do as the Father has commanded me, so that the world may know that I love the Father. Rise, let us go from here.

P: This is the Gospel of our Lord! C: (Spoken) Praise to You, O Christ! HYMN OF THE DAY "Holy Spirit, the Dove Sent from Heaven” LSB 502 SERMON “Blah, Blah, Blah” Genesis 11:6,7,9

Rev. Dean Pfeffer

SONG OF RESPONSE “He Reigns” ABS (4) 5

It’s the song of the redeemed— / rising from the African plain… It’s the song of the forgiven / drowning out the Amazon rain…

The song of Asian believers / filled with God’s holy fire… It’s ev’ry tribe, ev’ry tongue, ev’ry nation / a love song born of a grateful

choir… It’s all God’s children singing,

(Chorus) “Glory, glory / hallelujah! He reigns / He reigns!” It’s all God’s children

singing, “Glory, glory / hallelujah! He reigns / He reigns!”

7

Let it rise above the four winds / caught up in the heavenly sound… Let praises echo from the towers of cathedrals /

to the faithful gathered underground… Of all the songs sung from the dawn of creation /

some were meant to persist… Of all the bells rung from a thousand steeples /

none rings truer than this… It’s all God’s children singing, (Chorus)

And all the powers of darkness tremble at what they’ve just heard… ‘Cause all the powers of darkness / can’t drown out a single word…

When all God’s children sing out, (Chorus)

OFFERING PRAYER Lord, help me to grasp that all the blessings I think I have are really

Yours. Help me to grasp that all the blessings our church has do not belong to the church, but to You. Give us healthy giving hearts to use these blessings according to Your purpose. In Your name I pray. Amen.

CELEBRATION OF FRIENDSHIP As the offerings are received, please sign the register in the pews, whether you are a member of Hope Lutheran or a visitor. The person at the end of the pew should start and then pass it along. Thank you for making worship with us a priority this Lord’s Day.

GIVING OF OUR TITHES AND OFFERINGS Our tithes are our regular, top priority, proportionate, grateful gifts to the Lord for the work of the gospel. Our offerings are our special gifts for special causes over and above our tithes.

VOLUNTARY “Santo Espiritu” sett’g: Jon D. Vickers PRAYERS OF GOD’S PEOPLE

P: Let us pray to the Lord on behalf of ourselves and all people as they have need. Lord of mercy, for our good You dispersed the nations, but in love You have gathered those whom You had scattered, that in Jesus Christ every division may be bridged and every nation united in faith. Help us to be faithful in speaking forth Your Word and showing forth the healing power of Your love. Lord, in Your mercy,

C: hear our prayer.

8

P: Lord of power, according to Your promise, You gave Your Spirit to Your sons and daughters and placed in them the fire of Your love for the sake of those who do not know You. Give to Your Church passion for Your work, and raise up those whom You call to be successors to the apostles in proclaiming Your Word and teaching the faith. Lord, in Your mercy,

C: hear our prayer. P: Lord of might, preserve Your people from their enemies, bring peace to

the nations, prosper the cause of life and bless our leaders, especially our president, governor, Congress, legislature, and all judges and magistrates. Give them a relentless pursuit of just laws for the common good of all, with a heart of mercy for the weak and vulnerable. Lord, in Your mercy,

C: hear our prayer. P: Lord of life, preserve for our use the good fruits of the earth and prosper

all honest labor and work, that all industry and technology may serve Your noble purpose and be employed first for the sake of the work of Your Kingdom. Accept the prayers and praise of Your people and the tithes and offerings we bring in thanksgiving before You. Lord, in Your mercy,

C: hear our prayer. P: Lord of compassion, forget not the sick and the suffering, and grant them

healing according to Your will especially do we name before You Dan Senkarik and Rayetta Stare. Give them confidence that You know their need and will well supply them with all that they need to endure to the day of Your coming, when all affliction will end and You will grant the perfect consummation to us and all who have loved Your appearing. Lord, in Your mercy,

C: hear our prayer. P: Lord of love, give to those who weep the joy of Your presence, to those

who mourn the hope of the resurrection, and to those who are alone and afraid the consolation of Your Spirit, that they may not despair nor be overcome by affliction. Help them to know the joy of Your presence through our love and care. Lord, in Your mercy,

C: hear our prayer. P: Into Your hands, O Lord, we commend all for whom we pray, trusting in

Your mercy; through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who taught us to pray: C: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy

kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we

9

forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen.

CLOSING PRAYER God, reignite the hearts of us all to have a passion for the Gospel. Teach our church to share the Gospel with others. Teach us to live as those who are true bearers of the good news of Jesus Christ. Remind us of our purpose. Convict us of our purpose. Empower us to live our purpose. In Jesus name. Amen.

BENEDICTION P: The LORD bless you and keep you.

The LORD make His face shine upon you and be gracious to you. The LORD look upon you with favor and give you peace.

C: Amen. P: We are now entering the mission field! C: ‘Here am I! Send me!’ CLOSING SONG “Let the Flame Burn Brighter” BOB 142

We’ll walk the land with hearts on fire, and ev’ry step will be a prayer; Hope is rising, new day dawning, sound of singing fills the air.

Two thousand years, and still the flame is burning bright across the land; Hearts are waiting, longing, aching for awak’ning once again. (Chorus)

(Chorus) Let the flame burn brighter in the heart of the darkness, turning night into glorious day;

Let the song grow louder, as our love grows stronger, let it shine, let it shine!

And side by side, one heart, one song, through many streams, We’ll flow as one; Till Christ’s compassion floods the nations and all

creation sees Him come.

Our Captain calls, the King of kings and Lord of lords, faithful and true; So let our answer resound like thunder, “Jesus, Master, we’re with You!”

Connecting Points TODAY: the church marks the Festival of Pentecost—the 50th day after

Easter. Pentecost is also marked as the birthday of the Christin Church as

we hear in our reading from Acts. This is the day the Holy Spirit

descended on the disciples as tongues of fire and the Gospel was

proclaimed in many languages for all to hear and understand.

Pentecost marks the end of the “festival half” of the church year. The

color of Pentecost is RED~ the color of both fire and witness.

THANK YOU: to everyone who donated red begonias to aid us in our worship

this Pentecost Sunday. Please remember to take you plant(s) home with

TODAY following worship.

PENTECOST READERS: Thank you to those helping us see what it must have been like

hearing the Word of God proclaimed in different languages at the same

the time as on that first Pentecost. Our Gospel readers today are: Pastor

Shea—Greek; Eddie Attalla—Arabic; Maria Donadelli—Spanish; Alex

Drapp—French; and Nick Trivunovich—Serbian. Thank you for assisting us

outpouring of love as we celebrated 25 years in the Pastoral Ministry of our Lutheran

Church Missouri Synod last Sunday. It was an AMAZING day that we will always

treasure. It really isn’t any wonder why out of 25 years of ministry, we have been

here at Hope for 23 years! God has blessed us beyond measure with a tremendous

staff and congregation. THANK YOU from the bottom of our hearts for a truly

memorable and special day.

ADULTS

THE STORY: The "Greatest Story Ever Told" is more than just a cliché. God goes to great lengths to rescue lost and hurting people. That is what The Story is all about—the story of the Bible, God’s great love affair with humanity. Condensed into 31 accessible chapters, The Story sweeps you into the unfolding progression of Bible characters and events from Genesis to Revelation. Using the clear, accessible text of the NIV Bible, it allows the stories, poems, and teachings of the Bible to read like a novel. And like any good story, The Story is filled with intrigue, drama, conflict, romance, and redemption—and this story’s true! Meets in Fellowship Hall. Leader: Pastor Pfeffer

MIDDLE SCHOOL & HIGH SCHOOL

Like the Apostle Paul in Athens (Acts 17), we too live in a world of increasing plurality. Already our youth are encountering various religions and sects within their schools (e.g., Muslims, Wiccans). So, as we prepare to engage peers of various beliefs and worldviews it is important [a] that we understand these religions and sects so we can share our Hope in way that resonates with them (like Paul in Acts 17:28); and [b] so we aren’t deceived or confused by the plurality we encounter. Leader: Pastor Shea

PRESCHOOL—GRADE 5 THE STORY: Children will experience God's great love as His story comes to life! 31 engaging lessons for preschoolers through elementary children are formatted around relatable Scripture references, memory verses, and Bible themes. Leaders: Yolanda Heipp, Tracy MacDonald, Ellen Whitehurst
