Pastor’s Notes

He is Risen! Alleluia! Alleluia!

I want to extend a warm welcome to all our parishioners, their families and guests, as we celebrate this most holy feast of the Resurrection of Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

The story of Jesus, like every story, has a beginning, a middle and an end. In the beginning of the Scriptures we read of the conception and birth of Jesus, and so we celebrate Christmas Day! However, right away there is already some indication of how Christ’s life will end, when we read of Herod’s threats. Herod threatens the life of Jesus almost immediately after Christ’s birth. To understand fully, we must continue to listen to the story unfold.

We come to the middle of the story. Like any good mystery, suspense starts to build. We know Jesus is innocent; however many are unwilling to believe in His word. Christ starts to teach that He was born to suffer and die for all. This is brought to light as He prophesies that He will go into Jerusalem and suffer, and eventually die. This is why, when we get to the part of the passion and death, we are not surprised.

Although this seems to be the climax of the story, and is the part we focus on in sorrow, we must remember the story goes on to offer great hope: He rises from the dead. Jesus had prophesied this His whole life long. He said He came “to suffer and to die, and then to rise from the dead.” He promised that all who come to believe that He is truly the Son of God, will also rise.

Each of us has our own story, and it begins the day we were baptized. We were presented to God and washed clean in the waters of Baptism and the Holy Spirit. We become a new creation and clothe ourselves in Christ; thus we become part of the Church, and eventually, inheritors of the kingdom of heaven.

Our lives will be filled with great joys, many sorrows, much pain and suffering, because we are truly part of the Body of Christ. It is in and through these moments of our lives – good or bad – that we come to know Christ more fully. Christ came to live, to die and now He comes to rise for each of us – making our lives so very blessed and so very important. We were once dead, and now we live because JESUS CHRIST IS TRULY RISEN TODAY!

May we rejoice in this glorious Easter Day! Father Storey

Three Days That Changed the World ~ Fr. Hector R.G. Perez

Fr. Perez brings us alongside Jesus in the final hours of His public ministry as He brings to fulfillment the very pur-pose of His Incarnation, the salvation of all mankind. Fr. Perez's detailed in-sights of those last three days offer a moving look into the loving heart of the Messiah and detailed descriptions of His intense emotional and physical sufferings as they really were. With this knowledge, our hearts can only love Him more.

Dale Schmidtberger Memorial Coaching Award

The Holy Spirit Athletic Association is asking for nominations for the “Dale Schmidtberger Memorial Coaching Award.” This award is given annually to deserving youth sport coaches at Holy Spirit Parish in Overland Park, Kansas. It is presented in memory of Dale Schmidtberger, a long time coach for various sports teams at Holy Spirit, as well as member of the HSAA board of directors. Dale passed away on October 20, 2003, after a long battle with cancer. This award is to be given to a coach who is nominated by a Holy Spirit youth sports participant or parent. The de-serving coach should be an example of the highest ideals of youth coach-ing, including consistent emphasis upon sportsmanship and fair play. At the same time, the individual must demonstrate excellence in the teach-ing of sports skills and instilling a love of sports into the youth of Holy Spirit Parish. Eligible coaches in-clude not only CYO coaches, but coaches from all sports leagues and club teams. The winning coach will be selected by a committee chosen by the President of the Holy Spirit Athletic Association. This committee will review the nomination forms and the winner will be announced at the annual season ending picnic on April 25th. Emphasis will be given to coaches nominated by a youth sports participant, but also nomina-tions from adults are welcome and appreciated. The winner will receive a plaque and other appropriate gifts from the Holy Spirit Athletic Associa-tion. The concept is simple: Honor deserving coaches at Holy Spirit and honor the memory of Dale Schmidtberger, who so very much loved coaching his sons and the sons of others. To nominate a coach, send a message describing the nom-inee’s coaching experience and why you believe he or she is deserving of the award to Mary Jacobs at [email protected] or Chuck Weinhardt at [email protected]. The deadline for a nomination is April 10th.

SISTER M. TERESA, FSGM DIRECTOR of

School of Religion “Galilee is the place where they were first called, where everything began! To

return there, to return to the place where they were originally called. Jesus had walked along the shores of the lake as the fishermen were casting their nets. He had called them, and they left everything and followed him (cf. Mt 4:18-22). To return to Galilee means to re-read everything on the basis of the cross and its victory, fearlessly: “do not be afraid.” To re-read everything – Jesus’ preaching, His miracles, the new community, the excitement and the defections, even the betrayal – to re-read everything starting from the end, which is a new beginning, from this supreme act of love. For each of us, too, there is a “Galilee” at the origin of our journey with Jesus. “To go to Galilee” means something beautiful, it means rediscovering our baptism as a living fountainhead, drawing new energy from the sources of our faith and our Christian experience. To return to Galilee means above all to return to that blazing light with which God’s grace touched me at the start of the journey. From that flame I can light a fire for today and every day, and bring heat and light to my brothers and sisters. That flame ignites a humble joy, a joy which sorrow and distress cannot dismay, a good, gentle joy. In the life of every Christian, after baptism there is also another “Galilee,” a more existential “Galilee:” the experience of a personal encounter with Jesus Christ who called me to follow Him and to share in His mission. In this sense, returning to Galilee means treasuring in my heart the living memory of that call, when Jesus passed my way, gazed at me with mercy and asked me to follow Him. To return there means reviving the memory of that moment when His eyes met mine, the moment when he made me realize that he loved me.” Pope Francis, Easter Vigil 2014
