GSSC OFFERS NEW ENERGY PATCH PROGRAM IN PARTNERSHIP WITH PSEG LONG ISLAND

RACE CAR BOASTS GSSC PRIDE AT NATIONAL COMPETITION

As part of its STEM initiative, GSSC has partnered with PSEG Long Island in unveiling a new patch program that teaches girls the importance of energy conservation. Girls who complete the requirements receive the exclusive Energy Patch.

The new program addresses topics

such as home energy conservation,

emergency preparedness, indoor

electrical safety, electric vehicles

and much more.

“We are delighted to partner with

PSEG Long Island as we offer this

unique patch program to girls,”

says Yvonne Grant, President

& CEO of Girl Scouts of Suffolk

County. “Girl Scouts pledge to

use resources wisely and respect

their environment, and PSEG Long

Island’s Energy Patch Program is a

terrific way to teach girls about the

importance of conservation.”

For more information on the Energy

Patch Program, visit www.gssc.us.

Race car driver Val Smeland, a 20 year veteran of the National Hot Rod Association (NHRA), recently raced his car at a national competition in Chicago, Illinois.

Typically, decals on a race car are

used to promote the driver and his

or her supporters and sponsors.

Val’s wife, Donna Smeland, is Chair

of the Board for GSSC. So, in a

show of support, Val displayed a

Girl Scouts of Suffolk County decal

on his car.

After the race, a group of Girl

Scouts from Girl Scouts

of Greater Chicago

of North Eastern

Indiana stopped

by the pit to visit

Val and his crew

because they

noticed the logo

on his car. Not

only were the girls

fans, but a few of

them were also Junior Dragster

competitors!

It just goes to show that Girl Scouts

can do anything. Plus, one of the

great things about racing is that not

only are there many women fans,

but there are many women

competitors as well.

Congratulations to Val Smeland on

a great race, and many thanks to

him for his unique show of support

for Girl Scouts of Suffolk County!

NEWS

GSSC | 11

GSSC

GSSC has recently debuted the

Customer Engagement Initiative

(CEI) that consists of three all-

new, online tools—a membership

registration system, a newly-

designed website, and the

Volunteer Toolkit (VTK).

These items will provide a quality,

customer-centric and consistent

experience, resulting in girl and

volunteer membership growth. Here

are the facts:

The Benefits

• CEI will make for a faster and

easier way to join Girl Scouts. The

process now takes only one week

instead of four to six weeks.

• Volunteers can find content

quickly and easily on the new

website (www.gssc.us) by using

the “search” function. Searching

for forms and events just

got easier!

• Volunteering will now take less

than 100 hours per year, instead

of the 200 hours of years prior.

The Volunteer Toolkit

• The Volunteer Toolkit (VTK)

will make managing a troop so

much easier.

• Volunteers can manage

troops, plan meetings for the

year, communicate with girls’

parents, and connect with other

volunteers—and all at the touch

of a button!

Opportunity Catalog

• The new online Opportunity

Catalog makes joining a Girl

Scout troop a snap!

• The catalog allows parents and

volunteers to search for troops

and locations and meeting days

that work for them.

• The catalog also shows the

volunteer positions that need

to be filled to start a troop.

Volunteers will be appointed to a

troop in one week instead of the

four to six week process under

the old system.

• Parents will be regularly informed

of their girl’s status regarding

joining a troop.

The Bottom Line

The formula is simple: More

volunteers recruited = more girls

are served = an enhanced and more

relevant Girl Experience!

NEWSGSSC

Girl Scouting remains the best girl-led leadership program in the

nation for more than one hundred years.

The Boy Scouts of America’s (BSA) Board of Directors recently

voted to include girls in their recruitment efforts. Girl Scouts

of Suffolk County (GSSC) remains committed to and believes

strongly in the importance of the all-girl, girl-led, and girl-

friendly environment that Girl Scouts provides, which creates a

necessary safe space for girls to learn and thrive. We are proud

to offer valuable experiences for girls such as STEM, outdoor,

entrepreneurship, and life-skills programming.

We are dedicated to ensuring that girls are able to take

advantage of a program tailored specifically to their unique

developmental needs. Only Girl Scouts has more than 100 years

of experience helping girls tap into their leadership potential

by reinforcing and extending the skills they learn in school in a

supportive, encouraging environment in which they feel safe to

be themselves. Statistics show that single-gender environments

among youth benefits both boys and girls, as they promote

collaboration instead of competition without the stress and

pressure that coed environments can perpetuate.

BSA’s announcement has also promoted some misconceptions

such as Girl Scouts does not offer a recognition like the Eagle

Scout Award, and does not offer quality outdoor programs.

Of course, those in Girl Scouting know that neither of these

sentiments are true. The Girl Scout Gold Award is the highest

award a girl can earn in Girl Scouting. Ninety-six percent of Gold

Award Girl Scouts attributes Girl Scouts to encouraging them

to set ambitious goals, and 81% consider themselves leaders,

compared with 50% of non-alumnae.

Additionally, the Girl Scout Gold Award requires more than 80

hours of community service. The project must meet an expressed

need in the community, have a global impact, and be sustainable

for three years.

GSSC also offers a robust repertoire of outdoor programs. Girls

can choose from a myriad of outdoor experiences such as

camping, archery, canoeing, corcls, outdoor cooking, fishing,

hiking, and many more.

Girl Scouts is, and will remain, the scouting program that truly

benefits girls by providing a safe space for them to learn and lead.

GSSC is proud to continue this tradition, and looks forward to

many more years of helping girls become the strong, confident

and successful leaders of tomorrow.

SUPPORT SISTER SCOUTS IN DISASTER-STRICKEN AREASGSSC’s thoughts and warm wishes continue to be with our sister Girl Scout councils impacted by

Hurricanes Harvey, Irma and Maria: Girl Scouts of Caribe, Girl Scouts of Citrus, Girl Scouts of Gateway,

Girl Scouts of Gulfcoast Florida, Girl Scouts of Southeast Florida, Girl Scouts of Tropical Florida, Girl

Scouts of West Central Florida, Girl Scouts of Historic Georgia, Girl Scouts of San Jacinto, Girl Scouts of

Central Texas, Girl Scouts of Greater South Texas and Girl Scouts of Louisiana-Pines to the Gulf.

We also continue to think of those Girl Scouts who have been affected by the wildfires in California.

If you would like to donate items to help those in disaster-stricken areas, please contact your local

township. Many are setting up distribution centers to send supplies to those who have been hit hardest

by the recent series of natural disasters.

Together, let’s show our sister scouts that we stand strong with them during this difficult time.

From dive tanks to infinity rooms to

inspirational speakers (and more!), G.I.R.L.

2017 truly was an epic event—and the

LARGEST girl-led event in the world!

Hosted by Girl Scouts, this mega event

took place in Columbus, Ohio, October

6–8, and provided

every G.I.R.L. (Go-

getter, Innovator,

Risk-taker, Leader)™

with unforgettable

experiences.

And before G.I.R.L.

2017 kicked off,

hundreds of Girl

Scout delegates—

both girls and

adults—traveled from across the United

States to represent their councils and

the Girl Scout Movement at the 54th

National Council Session. At this meeting,

delegates are responsible for influencing

the strategic direction of the Movement

by providing guidance to the

Girl Scouts of the USA Board

of Directors, whether through

board member elections,

promoting positive change and more.

GSSC was delighted to be part of this

extraordinary experience, and sent 10

delegates to the National Session: Terry

Doherty, Tom Flanagan, Jennifer Glover,

Yvonne Grant, JeanAnn Johnston, Jenna

Kierstedt, Jackie Morgan, Kerrie Ryan,

Tammy Severino, and Donna Smeland.

GSSC also sent 6 Girl Scouts to the G.I.R.L.

2017 session, including Girl Scouts Grier

Adams, Naomi Blowe, Jazmine Bush, Chloe

Bzdyk, Margaret Hoge and Julia Jacobellis,

as well as two adult chaperones: Alena

We’re looking forward to the 55th

GOLD AWARDGSSC

It was an inspiring evening of friendship and excellence as more than 85 of GSSC’s finest received the Girl Scout Gold Award at East Wind in Wading River on June 6, 2018.

The Girl Scout Gold Award, Girl

through completion of a project

that meets an expressed need

in the community.

A Gold Award Girl Scout becomes a
