These factors can come together to bring an inclusive development to this region

300 days of Sunlight. Enough solar energy to provide 10 times electricity to Ladakh, but it remains untapped

Sustainability

Over .2 million tourists visit lLdakh every year during the 5 month season. 80% tourists are from west and go hiking trips.

Tourism Potential

Problem - Education is still limited to School Text books and Teachers with low exposure towards advancement. 95% of the ladakh youth is tourist guides

Education

Vilages here have not seen electricity ever. They are spread across teh district and not even accessible by roads.

An Ambitious Cause with a Large-scale, Long-term Impact

• Sumda Chenmo, a village of 100 people, 2 days of trek from any nearby motorable road

Where?

• Using a DC Solar Micro-grid

• Each house would be connected to the grid, and 120 LED lamps would be fitted in 14 houses

How?

• Ladakh re ei es arou d 300 da s of right su light e er ear, ith orld’s a i u insolation level of upto 1200w/m2

• Lower temperature allows for better photo voltaic efficiency

Why Solar?

• Displacing usage of 1600 liters of kerosene ( amounting to around 4000kgs of CO2)

• Extending working hours of the villagers by 4/day, whose major occupation is weaving Pashmina shawls and creation of handicrafts, thus improving their yield

• Improving the living environment by eliminating fumes

• Creating a conducive environment for education – for both children and adults

Measurable Impact & Self Sustaining Model Village - Sumda Chenmo

Impact

– Income generation through Home stay (with participation of 100%

households) of INR 2,00,000/- for 8 months

– Reduction in CO2 emissions of 1600 Liters

– Extend the work hours by 4 hours/day with use of electricity post dusk

Self Sustaining Model

– All the grids are managed by the Village Level Entrepreneur (VLE)

– The VLE is responsible for collection of monthly usage charges

– The charges (fee) that are collected from the monthly usage are put into a

village bank account and helps finance the grid maintenance

– The local entrepreneur(s) is trained on solar and takes care of periodic

servicing and repairs of the grid, panels, etc.

We search villages through local Contacts as there is no database or survey

conducted due to their in-accessibility. The team treks sometimes for10-12

days to reach Villages or need to drive on un-motorable roads

It’s important to have the community as well local leadership buy in before implementing the Solar microgrid. The process also includes educating

villagers on the benefits of using Solar and its long term affect

A committee is formed in the village that looks after the upkeep and

maintenance of Grid. Every villager contributes a monthly rental which goes

into a Joint account opened by the villagers
