A two-story frame residence w i t h h o r i z o n t a l s i d i n g , of c e n t r a l h a l l p l a n w i t h a shingled gable roof w i t h the ridge p a r a l l e l t o the f r o n t of the house. There i s an attached shed roofed f r o n t g a l l e r y and corresponding lean-to one-story rear se.ction. There i s one large stepped chimney on the n o r t h side of the house which i s not o r i g i n a l . The g a l l e r y has three hays w i t h the center bay narrower than the side bays. The posts are capped and there i s a s l a t balustrade. The f r o n t and rear doors are paneled and double w i t h seven l i g h t side l i g h t s extend ing t o the a r c h i t r a v e and f o u r h o r i z o n t a l l i g h t s i n the transoms The windows are s i x over s i x double hung sash type; those on the f i r s t s t o r y are l a r g e r than the windows at the second l e v e l . V e r t i c a l s t r i p s accentuate the corners. The house i s simple w i t h c a r e f u l craftsmanship evident. There are four rooms down­s t a i r s and one large room above. There i s a log shed i n the rear, h a l f enclosed, h a l f open area under one roo f . The house has been r e s t o r e d as a house museum. E l e c t r i c i t y and plumbing have been removed.

The French Home Trading Post, i n Beaumont, Texas, was b u i l t i n 1845 by John Jay French, a merchant and tanner who came from New York t o Texas i n the 1830s. His house served as a s t o r e , and e a r l y Beaumont s e t t l e r s came t o "French Town" to trade t h e i r produce f o r s t o r e goods. Recently, the Beaumont Junior League bought the home and deeded i t t o the Beaumont Heritage Society. The Society, w i t h A r c h i t e c t R a i f o r d S t r i p l i n j g , r e s t o r e d the t r a d i n g post t o i t s o r i g i n a l c o n d i t i o n .

French was a t r a d e r i n any commodity t h a t made money — skins, a g r i c u l t u r e , or land. Before he moved t o Texas, he was a member of the f i r m o f Coe and French, Tanners, i n Oxford, Connecticut. He became i n s p i r e d by the t a l k he heard of land values i n Texas and came t o Texas i n about 183 2. He had pur­chased goods i n the East t o e s t a b l i s h a stor e but l o s t much of i t i n a shi;^ Vreck. For a wh i l e he peddled what remained of h i s supplies"""^ I n 1835 he app l i e d f o r a grant of land on Flores Creek from the Mexican government. S h o r t l y a f t e r he received the grant, he r e a l i z e d t h a t nearby Beaumont was a more p r o f i t ­able area, and he bought 300 acres three and one-half miles northwest of the town. He brought h i s w i f e and c h i l d r e n t o Texas from New York and probably l i v e d at Taylor's Bayou f o r several years.

He bought the land f o r h i s house f o r $400 i n promissory notes from a Joel Lewis,and i n 1845 he b u i l t a home which consisted of four downstairs rooms and one large u p s t a i r s room. He b u i l t a tannery and f i v e vats and also had m i l l s f o r corn and g r a i n . I n a d d i t i o n , French kept a t r a d i n g post which i s thought t o have occupied the upper s t o r y o f h i s house. Eventu­a l l y , French sol d h i s business t o h i s sons, and became involved i n land s p e c u l a t i o n . By 1877 he had bought more than 8000 acre i n various East Texas counties, as w e l l as a b u i l d i n g on The Strand i n Galveston. Later owners o f the French Home and Trading Post have included members o f the French f a m i l y , a Mrs. Lawrence, the M.A. Merchants, and the Beaumont Heritage Society. This l a s t group has done extensive r e s t o r a t i o n work

The m a j o r i t y of the property proposed f o r a d d i t i o n i s r e s i d e n t i a l . As would be expected on the edge of the Big Thicket, i t i s h e a v i l y xvooded w i t h oak, pine, cedar, magnolias, and shrubbery. Modern development, however, .has removed most of the n a t u r a l underbrush. The area i s on the c o a s t a l p l a i n and t h e r e f o r e l a w - l y i n g c nd f l a t . Due t o the la r g e scale and density of the trees and the sm.all scale of the four modern s t r u c t u r e s i n the proposed acreage, the area maintains the impression of a r u r a l countryside r a t h e r than a modem r e s i d e n t i a l developm.ent.

Occupying the 7.05 acres besides the John French home are 1 h i s t o r i c ( a l t e r e d ) and 4 modem s t r u c t u r e s . On t r a c t 222 i s the David French home, b u i l t during the 1850's. A t t h a t time i t was a 2-stcry frame house, simi].ar to h i s f a t h e r ' s home across the road. I n 1917, the second s t o r y was removed, and a d d i t i o n s were made t o the f i r s t f l o o r . Today i t i s l i - f - s t o r i e s , covers approximately 3000 square f e e t , and i s topped by a dormered him r o o f . The porch, supported by Tuscan columns, has been enclosed by screening.

Tract 200 contains a small stucco house of less than 1000 square f e e t . Of simple design, i t s o n l y d i s t i n g u i s h i n g f e a t u r e i s a red t i l e r o o f . There are tv/o small frame houses present. The one on t r a c t 275 was b u i l t during the 1940's and houses the Beaumont Heritage Society's

o f f i c e s . I t has a s i n g l e gable r o o f , detached gabled c a r p o r t , and i s painted dark r u s t w i t h white t r i m . The other, on t r a c t 289, has a

I t also has a porch w i t h Tuscan columns. A l l o f the yards are well-maintained, and most are enclosed by cyclone f e n c i n g .

The nineteenth century French f a m i l y cemetery i s found norrh of t r a c t 200, on t r a c t 305. I t i s approxi.mately 35 f e e t square, surrouiided by chain cyclone fencing, w.ith one gate. The headstones are of simple g r a n i t e design.

Future development o f the miuseum includes purchase of the David French home ( t r a c t 222) f o r use as the permanent Heritage Society o f f i c e and g i f t shop. Preservation of the home, which has remained i n the French f a m i l y since i t v/as b u i l t i n the 1850's, would p o r t r a y l a t t e r - d a y development of the French settlement as an i n t e g r a l p a r t o f the museum's s i t e i n t e r p r e t a t i o n .

iv'hen the o f f i c e s were r e l o c a t e d t o tiie David French House from t h e i r present l o c a t i o n , the e x i s t i n g modern o f f i c e s t r u c t u r e and c a r p o r t would be removed from t r a c t 275. Reconstruction of the tannery would take place a t the rear of t h i s t r a c t , on t r a c t 2 98, which w i l l be p a r t of the i n t e r p r e t i v e t r a i l t o the cemetery.

The present French Trading Post Museum i s only p a r t of a l a r g e r h i s t o r i c community. The 7.05 acres surrounding the French Trading Post (N.R. 1970) were o r i g i n a l l y p a r t of the 300 acres bought by John Jay French i n 1835. The o r i g i n a l wood frame, l o g and b r i c k complex, b u i l t i n 1845, included the John French home (now i n t e r p r e t e d as a museum by the Beaumont Heritage Society) , a tannery v/ith f i v e vaus, a g r i s t m . i l l , a t r a d i n g post, a wine house, a barn, a ce::ietery and at l e a s t one subsequent home b u i l t f o r other French f a m i l y members. According to o r a l t r a d i t i o n , b r i c k used i n c o n s t r u c t i o n of the settlement were made at the s i t e . Recent a r c h e o l o g i c a l i n v e s t i g a t i o n s have un­covered b r i c k features which may be i n t e r p r e t e d by the museum f o l l o w i n g more i n t e n s i v e i n v e s t i g a t i o n .

The David French House was b u i l t f o r the son of John French i n the 1850's very much l i k e the f a t h e r ' s house. I t has subsequently been a l t e r e d by French descendants, having remained i n the same f a m i l y f o r some 120 years. The Beaumont Heritage Society plans to acquire the home f o r use as the French Trading Post Museum o f f i c e and meeting rooms, i n t e r p r e t i n g the house w i t h i t s a l t e r a t i o n s i n l i g h t o f the development of the French settlement.

Adjacent r e s i d e n t i a l p r o p e r t i e s i n the prorjosed a d d i t i o n are important as b u f f e r s to the museum and w i l l only be considered f o r a c q u i s i t i o n by the Society i f proposed development o f the p r o p e r t i e s threatens the museum complex.

Only 7.05 acres i s proposed f o r noniination r a t h e r than t2ie e n t i r e 300 acres o r i g i n a l l y purchased by John French due to the f a c t t h a t these 7.05 acres help to maintain the r u r a l character o f the complex, w h i l e the remaining acreage has undergone extensive modern development which could f u r t h e r encroach on the French settlement area i n f u t u r e years (although no such plans are now known).
