The Italian hotel contract sector, an undisputed leader at international level for design and quality, is undergo-ing a moment of great transformation as a result of radical modifications to the context in which it has to op-

erate. It emerges from a report by Federlegno/Arredo that the critical variable that the companies in the sector are called upon to develop today is no longer the “ability to do” but the “ability to sell”, understood as the ability to control the distribution channel and engage and interact with customers. And so the new edition of Pianetahotel International follows the path suggested by the report, aiming to act as a precious ally to the supply companies in their activities of communication and promotion on international markets during the principal trade fairs of the sector. As well as the directory bringing together over 250 companies from the widest range of sectors - from illumina-tion technique to wall coverings, furnishing accessories and technologies - we discuss new trends and interior projects created by Italian professionals and supply companies throughout the world. A panoramic view emphasizing the leadership of our production chain which,

with economic recovery announced as round the corner, intends to play a more significant role today also on the commercial front.As Giovanni Anzani, chairman of Assarredo-Federlegno Arredo, explains in the interview published on page 16, we have to take a step forward in terms of organization. The challenge awaiting companies in the contract sector, in fact, is that of adopting a model where collabo-rative competition gets the better of competi-tion for its own sake. A model in which small and large companies operate together follow-ing a logical system. A goal that, in the light of the critical mass of our competitors and the current economic difficulties, is an obligatory path. Failing which, we risk losing our market quotas and dispersing a know-how that the whole world envies.

Toscana Promozione is organizing ‘Selection of Tuscan Wines’, a prestigious competition now at its 9th edition. It identifi es and demonstrates the quality of the fi nest labels of Tuscan wine production by submitting them to a qualifi ed jury which chooses from the hundreds of labels presented by the

producers, who have free and unlimited access to the competition. Authorized by the Ministry of Agricul-tural, Alimentary and Forestry Policies, the initiative is organized by Toscana Promozione in collaboration

with Enoteca Italiana of Siena, Associazione Enologi Enotecnici Italiani, the protecting Consortiums, the Provinces and Chambers of Commerce of Tuscany and ICE, the Institute for Foreign Trade.

The aim of the competition is to select and give awards to the best Tuscan wines, divided by category and price level, in order to bring them to the attention of international operators of the sector (from buyers to importers, purchasing offi cials of HoReCa, opinion makers, experts in oenology and the specialized press) through the creation of a bouquet of excellence. A selection of wines with im-portant, high quality names, but also brands and productions that are less famous, but of superior level, as well as the surprises and novelties that buyers can include in their own ‘wine lists’.

In order to guarantee the quality of its choice, the competition adopts the strict methods of the Union International des Oenologues, a decision which enables the competing wines to be assessed impar-

tially without knowledge of their label. Organization of the competition is managed by Enoteca Italiana of Siena, while the Tuscan Delegation of AIS (Associazione Italiana Sommelier) will collect the samples

from the wine-cellars. Selection is overseen by 77 jurors (11 commissions, each with 7 members) consist-ing of oenologists, sommeliers and journalists of the sector. All wines achieving a mark of at least 82/100 at

the ‘Selection’ phase receive a Diploma and are added to the initiative’s database. Wines achieving more than 85/100 obtain a Special Mention while the fi ve best wines of each category are awarded a special Diploma of Hon-

our. Selection takes places in Siena (19-22 November 2010) at the Hotel Garden and will be attended only by the jurors and organizers of the competition, who will taste all the wines submitted and admitted to the competition.

The success which all the world ascribes to Italian industrial de-sign is the fruit of a virtuous process. Its origins go back to the mid 1950s, or even earlier, with the birth and industrialization in the 1930s of a number of companies in the furniture production district of Brianza.Andrea Branzi is an architect and designer, one of the ‘creators’ of Italian design and among the founders of Archizoom Associati, the first avant-garde project group in the international field. «Ital-ian design of the immediate post-war years - he explains - was

the history of industrial design together with many well-remem-bered designers: Giò Ponti, Rodolfo Bonetto, Giuseppe Terragni and, later, Marco Zanuso, Vico Magistretti, Achille Castiglioni and Ico Parisi. Essential names in the field of lighting are Artemide Flos, Luceplan, OLuce, IGuzzini Illuminazione and De Majo while knick-knacks and tableware include such long-established com-panies as Alessi, Richard Ginori, Livellara and Sambonet. The list of brands in the houseware sector that hold the name of Italy high in the world would be long indeed. The truly interesting fact, though, is that the interaction between company and design of the ‘forefathers’ led to a widespread ‘pollination’ that nourished scores of companies, some of which later found a precise position in the reference markets and became leaders in their turn. This is the case, in the contract market, with Interna, today a major player

the result of a strange alliance between intellectuals and small-to-medium sized employers. In geographical areas such as Milan they established a sort of operative alliance which opted to set up at once, starting with industrial products, the transformation of society and structures that Rome was slow to programme».The Italian design system (the network of Agencies for research, innovation and promotion in the field of design is entitled ‘sistema design Italia’ - www.sistemadesignitalia.it) is based, now as in its earliest days, on the synergy between small-to-medium sized companies, design schools and enlightened designers. Protago-nists of furnishing and accessories include such now-historical brands as Zanotta, Cassina, Alias, Kartell, Arflex, Gruppo Feg, Danese, Driade, Poliform, Molteni&C, B&B Italia, Moroso, Bernini, Poltrona Frau, Emu and Tisettanta which wrote the first pages in

with the most important international hotel chains, collaborating with the most exclusive design signatures in the world. As for the Contract market, it is worth underlining that by now all major producers in the furnishing sector offer exclusive product lines for hotels, restaurants, offices and even yachts and cruise ships (a field in which Italy is a leader) and are for the most part able to create custom-made furniture, accessories and furnishing sys-tems and to offer a ‘turnkey’ service without geographical limits, supplying requirements from every corner of the planet.The high qualitative level of Italian production therefore goes hand in hand with a global vision of the contract sector, both in terms of supply, with ‘ad hoc’ products specifically conceived for the different markets, and in terms of organization, which is based on a worldwide sales network able to ensure differentiated and tailor-made products and services. The goal of many Italian com-panies of the sector, already partially achieved, is internationaliza-tion, even while the strength of the various companies lies in their capacity to ‘break out’ into the foreign markets while remaining firmly linked to their origins and traditions. It is by no chance that the names of the architects and designers with the highest reputation in the international field are those as-sociated with Italian producer companies, in a relationship of syn-ergic exchange that helps raise the qualitative level of the brand and confers increasing fame on Italian-made design. In the name of that design culture born at the beginning of the last century which has brought the production of design and furnishing in Italy to a high level of excellence and which today, more than ever, sets an example for the whole world.

2009 was an annus horribilis for Italian-made exports, of which furnishing is a leading protagonist. In particular, with a shortfall in large building projects at an international level, a stop to plans for new hotels practically everywhere, and the crisis affecting important outlet markets such as Dubai, the contract market registered a shrinkage in exports of around 22%. This touched, in the furnishing industry alone, important sectors such as padded furniture, bathroom furnishing and kitchens, as well as interior components and finishings such as structures in wood, doors and windows. To these must be added vital items such as ceramics for flooring and wall tiles, marble and stone. Overall the contract market (that is to say multiple supplies for offices, hotels, condominiums etc.) absorbed 12% of the 28 billion euro billed by the furnishing industry alone in 2009.The first signs of a recovery can be glimpsed, but the Chairman of Assarredo, Giovanni Anzani, feels they provide a motive for rethinking the Italian company system’s supply model for the contract. ‘In Italy

there are high quality skills and production capacity - he declares - but the problem is that we need to structure and organize the supply better. Very few companies are present all over the world. We’re very good at one-off operations, at presenting ourselves as direct, traditional negotiators. We’re not so good at showing we have an adequate structure in terms of guarantees and strong support’.The words of the sector employers’ representative reveal clearly the double track along which the Italian contract supply system runs. On the one hand the companies have savoir-faire, supported by a positive collaboration with architects and designers. On the other hand, they have difficulty in convincing investors and customers that they are a real system. Thus far the diagnosis. But Anzani also makes clear the means for dealing with the upturn, which is any

case expected to be long and difficult. ‘The challenge awaiting us is that of adopting a model of collaborative competition in which companies competing amongst themselves present themselves together according to a logical system, where companies that are smaller or less structured but possess high product skills can act as sub-suppliers’. A few years ago this path was already undertaken, in substance, with the creation, inside the sector employers’ association, of a sort of coordination centre which would look after this project: the ICDI, the Italian Contract and Design Industry. ‘But times were different - explains Anzani -. Growth was still expanding, companies had their order books full and everything was going fine. Things are very different today. With the first signs of an upturn, the contours of the markets we operate in have changed. We’re no longer in the presence of a luxury economy and if we can probably recover,

Wherever you go in the world, ceramics means ‘made in Italy’. It-aly is right at the top with 9% of world ceramic tile production and 40% of that in the EU. This is due to a production sector amount-ing to almost 200 companies, over 25,000 employees and col-laborators, turning out some 500 million square metres a year. In the first quarter of 2010, 69.5 million square metres (+1.7%) were produced for the international market with a total billing of

804.8 million euro (+1.9%); this expansion comes from the extra-EU markets, where growth is in double figures (+11.2%) following high performances by Asia (+25.1%) and the USA (+18.7%).The success, unmistakable style and quality characterizing Ital-ian ceramic tiles also derive from the sector industry’s ongoing investments in technology and research, reaching 5.5% of the overall billing in 2010. The results, especially in terms of product, are tangible. A wide range of typologies takes in single-baked, double-baked, porcelain-covered stone, brick and clinker and this year, as always, paraded the ‘best of itself’ at the Cersaie International Trade Fair of Bologna. The undoubted leader among the single typologies, always and everywhere, is porcelain-covered stone. Widely used by the hotel sector, indoors and outdoors, due to its high performance in terms of toughness, long life and flexible use, it accounts for 48.5% of national production, with 308.7 million square metres.Processed with textures and finishings that give it a perfect re-semblance to stones, granites, fabrics or wood, porcelain-covered stoneware is divided into an infinite number of unique variants. The Italian enterprise system’s capacity to sound out new paths and open up new fields of use for ceramic coverings, or to revital-ize those existing, is shown by one of the latest such innovations.

This is Laminam, the name identifying both the company and the product, which is a special ceramic sheet, tough but very thin, only 3 mm thick and 3 metres long. No longer a tile, therefore, but a sur-face for floors and walls, indoors and outdoors, for ventilated walls, dividing walls and coverings. But ceramics reach top elegance in mosaics, an unbroken tradition beginning with the masterpieces of Imperial Rome and still alive today. Companies such as Bisazza, Sicis and many others even offer mosaic surfaces decorated with personalized designs proposed by the customer and implemented with digital technique. The potential of this technology is obvious and many hotels around the world already boast creations in mo-saic made by Italian companies. As well as ceramics, Italy has scored notable success in the pro-duction of parquet flooring and is among the world leaders in pro-ducing stone materials for building and interior design; It is by no chance that Verona hosts the major international trade fair of the

Last April at Orlando (FI), the project for the Prizeotel of Bremen (Germany) achieved first prize in the North-American Distributor Award Competition 2010. Signed by the eccentric Karim Rashid, it was considered one of the finest projects in the world

sector, Marmomacc, the International Exhibition of Stone design & Technology. The excellence of the stone materials is shown by the unique processes the companies have developed, successfully moulding stone, marble, onyx and semi-precious stones in sur-faces that are textured, inlaid or even given three-dimensional ef-fect. Relying on a long traditional of transforming and processing stone, companies such as Budri, il Casone, Antolini, Lithos Design, etc. avail themselves of designers of the calibre of Massimo Iosa Ghini, Patricia Urquiola, Marco Piva, Michele Del Lucchi and Aldo Cibic, to mention only a few, as a means of continually enhancing the quality and design of their end products.

made with Italian tiles by North American architects. The prize was due to the extraordinary contribution of Ceramiche Refin, the top Italian company in the sector. Project oriented from its origins, the company succeeded in supporting the New York designer’s creativity with two specially created collections for the hotel’s flooring and interior walls.But, to appreciate fully the value of the prize and the concept, it must be remembered that the underlying premise of Rashid’s project was the customer’s wish for a design but low-cost hotel offering attractive and comfortable rooms at reasonable prices. For this reason Rashid himself has described the Prizeotel as a project of ‘designocracy’: high design available to all. The budget set was 1.5 million euro for designing and realizing 3,200 sq m, including a hall with reception area, two lounge bars and 150 bedrooms. The designer’s imagination and Refin’s skills produced amazing results: the hotel succeeds in offering a sensorial experience,

tactile as well as visual, that is always new, expressed above all in the materials used for the flooring and walls; porcelain-covered stone alternating with resins and wallpaper. The ceramics created by Refin exclusively for the Rashid project are unforgettable, personalized with graphics characterized by undulating lines approaching and moving away from each other to create an uninterrupted fluid movement on the surfaces. This unusual texture is proposed in two colour schemes: green lines on a black background and silver lines on a white background. In addition, decorations were used in some of the bathrooms from the R+Evolution collection, designed by Rashid in 2008 for DesignTaleStudio, Ceramiche Refin’s creative laboratory.

wellbeing in hotels, a global concept

For a hotel the concept of wellbeing is expressed first and fore-most in the comfort of the structure’s spaces - from the bedrooms to the hall and the lounge zones - and takes its most condensed form in spas and wellbeing centres. Dreamlike places with inter-nal and external pools, thalassotherapy, hydromassage and aes-thetic centres equipped with the most avant-garde technologies characterize the wellbeing centres of the newest hotels, created in Italy and all over the world by such Italian architects as Simone Micheli, Chicco Bestetti, Matteo Nunziati or the Studio Thun & Partners, which has signed the Hotel Now of Milan. In this latter the new suites offer the best of oriental and Mediterranean spas and can even be booked for a single day in order to enjoy maxi-mum wellbeing in total privacy. Antonio Rodriguez, head of the Studio’s product design sector, emphasizes how important it is to rediscover our roots, going back to the authentic spas of Impe-

rial Rome. Also among today’s most prestigious establishments is the Younique, designed by Matteo Nunziati, a 2,000 sq m luxury wellbeing centre only a hundred metres from Milan Cathedral yet with an almost private atmosphere. While the architect Simone Micheli creates almost dreamlike en-vironments, bringing a strong charge of technological and crea-tive innovation to his projects, where perception of space is lost among lighting displays and fl uctuating confi nes. Just a few ex-amples are the spa of Livigno (among the mountains of Sondrio) and the Wellbeing-spas of the Exedra Hotel-Boscolo Group of Mi-lan, Nice and Budapest. If it is true that Italian project makers are able to achieve a bal-ance between innovation and spa traditions, it is also true that this design tradition has been kept alive in our country by companies’ and designers’ ongoing research and by the various dedicated trade fair exhibitions. The salon of Host, in Milan, with 1,445 ex-hibitors from 40 countries and 125,000 operators attending its most recent edition, 33,000 of them foreigners from 141 coun-tries, dedicates an entire sector, Hotel&Spa Emotion, to wellbeing. On display here were the most innovatory products for creating prestigious wellbeing spaces. While high design sanitary fi xtures in ceramics and complete shower-washbasin-fi tness area project solutions create the new wellbeing-rooms of the most exclusive hotels. The fantastic dimension of the Spa

It could be described as the three-dimensional manifesto of the marriage between architecture, the sensory and wellbeing, mingling within an ancestral atmosphere: it is the wellbeing centre of the Exedra Nice Hotel in Nice, belonging to Boscolo Hotels and designed by the architect Simone Micheli. A place in which to celebrate the relationship between man, constructed space and relaxation, it develops in a fantastic dimension. Starting from the lounge zone, the vertical spaces are covered fl uidly with moulded, dynamic surfaces, fi nished with plaster and glossy white resin. Emerging from them are the round glass windows of the multimedia monitors. Led lighting fl ows from the hollow ceilings, transforming the simple boxlike room into a scenic display rich in emotions. The reception zone is furnished with a fl uidly-shaped desk, varnished glossy white, and rear-

lit corbels. It is ‘supported’ by a pillar in tree-form which rises to disappear in the ceiling, illuminated with yellow lighting. The swimming-pool, too is pervaded by gleams of blue light produced by underwater led lighting, while the great bellow-shaped ceiling unleashes a spectacular cascade of raindrops. Another ‘tree’ at the centre and a conical element on the wall create water jets to enliven the space. The great window of the swimming-pool gives a view of the relaxation zone with its flooring in natural stone and comfortable chaise-longues. Here, too, light plays a primary role. ‘It’s a total design, aimed at an extraordinary search for emotiveness. The spaces are treated as splinters of architecture, proclaiming a seductive theatricality which interacts with all the sensorial spheres. The paths and relaxation zones are designed to complete the effect and lull the guest into a sweet dream of relaxation’, explains Simone Micheli. All the furnishings and floors (except those of the treatment booths which are in solid surface Staron by Samsung) are produced by Italian companies and most are signed by Simone Micheli. These include the Axia Bath Collection, the loungers by Lemi, the Hug relaxation loungers by Schönhuber Franchi and the Frozen sanitary equipment by Simas Acqua Space.

Luxury, customization is strategic

Hotels out of fairy tales opening onto breathtaking views, skyscrap-ers in the middle of metropolises, resorts conceived as private resi-dences: these are the scenarios, the terms of reference when we speak of luxury hotels. And luxury, in architecture generally, is a concept that has continuity with the past. Ages and styles change, but luxury buildings and hotels, the immediate reflection of well-being, have always existed. Indeed, in a certain sense they have written the history of architecture and of man. And, given that luxury is the trappings of wealth, lo and behold the majestic new hotels rising in the nouveau riche countries of the world, from the Arab Emirates to China, Russia and Thailand. Those dealing today in hotel contracts have enormous opportunities in this sector and in the new countries. Specialized Italian architects and companies therefore have already in their portfolios numerous prestigious hotels created all over the world. Derna Del Stabile, co-owner of Interna Group - a company specializing in the high level contract sector on an inter-national scale - notes that there are great possibilities abroad, but that selection is cutthroat.But the crucial point is one alone: to be up to the competition. It is clear, then, that only companies in the upper bracket can guaran-tee high quality products and provide customer assistance, even abroad, from the project to ‘turnkey’, creating furnishing and com-ponents on request. During the last year Interna Group, for exam-

ple, has created the interior design of such hotels as the brand new Hotel Armani in Dubai, La Mamounia in Marrakech, the Regent Grand Hotel in Bordeaux, the ships Dream and Azura for Fincantieri, the Louis Vuitton shops and the Cartier Worldwide Boutiques. The secret? ‘Given the supply, the custom-made is strategic. A com-pany needs maximum flexibility in order to satisfy completely the demands of each project, and a high level of technical and mana-gerial specialization as well as investments in know how, human resources, information technology and production techniques and technologies’, Derna Del Stabile explains. Innumerable Italian fur-nishing brands are creating luxury hotels while as many architects are dealing with the project. The ‘type of luxury’ they succeed in creating together varies from case to case according to the culture of the country in which the hotel is to be built or the nature of the request, ranging from the extravagance of those created in Russia, China and the Arab countries to the gentler elegance of the hotels in the EU or in places where tourism is mainly European. But in any case, the ‘hand’ of Italian designers and the quality of Italian products is always recognizable. Marbles, fine woods and technical ceramics for coverings and finishings and elegant furnishing items, classic or contemporary, standard and custom-made, create the unmistakable style of resorts such as Elounda Beach on Crete (B&B Italia), of hotels belonging to great chains such as the Hyatt Park of Shanghai (Interna Group) and of luxury mega-residences such as Peak One in Hong Kong (Poliform).

Mirage Hotel, Kazan Spaces give form to illusion

Mirage, in Kazan, capital of the autonomous Republic of Tatarstan, in Russia. With seven storeys above ground, 109 rooms ranging from standard to suites and presidential, conference rooms, restaurants, wellbeing centres, bars and night clubs, with a total surface above ground of 20,000 square metres, the Hotel Mirage is a business-oriented 5-star hotel rising close to the majestic pyramid in steel and glass that is the city’s conference centre and reception structure. civil engineering company, was revised and extended by the Studio Marco Piva, which also oversaw the internal layout. ‘The hotel structure basically consisted of two blocks joined by a slab developed over two floors containing the common spaces - continues Marco Piva -. On the first floor, as well as the conference centre, are located the cafeteria bar, a Sushi Bar, a restaurant with a view of the Kremlin and of the great steel and glass pyramid, while ‘Opera’, the principal restaurant, is characterized by its attention to Italian cuisine. On the ground floor is the wellbeing centre, overlooking the external scenario of the swimming-pools with its jets of heated water’. In the two blocks are the 109 rooms of the Mirage, offering different sizes and characterized by a modern, elegant style but, above all, equipped with furniture and components created by Tisettanta Contract to a project by the Studio Marco Piva. The rest of the hotel is finished with materials, furniture and complements by other well-known Italian brands, including Sicis, Leucos, Luminara, Marazzi, Moroso, iGuzzini, Artemide and Bonacina.

Ahistorical trademark symbolic of Milanese cake-making, Tre Marie lives poised between tra-dition and legend. It is told that a group of knights, returning from the Holy Land in 1150, founded the Confraternity of the Four Maries. Their bakery offered fl our and bread to the needy, in

exchange for copper coins portraying the four pious women most loved by Jesus. Over the years the heritage of the confraternity was taken up by the bakery of the Tre Marie (Three Maries), the signboard of which, as a mark of respect,

separated the image of the Blessed Virgin from that of the ‘lesser’ Maries. Thus was born the Tre Marie trademark. During the centuries the bakery was transformed and in 1896 became the famous pastry-shop in Milan’s Corso Vittorio Emanuele.

In the 1960s it was decided to ‘export’ the Panettone beyond the city walls of Milan. No fewer than 150 letters were written by hand and sent to the most representative pastry-shops of Italy, proposing an ‘exclusive’ offer of the Christmas product. Success factorsfor hotel industry

We have identified in the following pages certain

macro-trends that are affecting our contempo-

rary perspective of the hotel as a container. We have done this through the vi-

sions of seven celebrated Italian architecture studios. These are projects, already

completed or under construction, in Italy and the rest of the world. From Milan

to the Swiss Alps, Saudi Arabia and Eastern Europe. Among the most commonly-

encountered themes is that of eco-sustainability. Hotels that put their stakes on

the ‘green’, whether for reasons of energy savings or as a means of affirming

a virtuous decision. Another notable trend is that of creating authentic ‘homes

away from home’, effectively large suites dominated by elegant furnishings, de-

sign accessories and wide-ranging technological equipment. We will discuss, with

images and accompanying descriptions, hybrid structures where a commercial

centre communes with a hotel and where eastern and western cultures meet and

walk hand in hand. There will be space for hotels opening straight onto the city by

means of large glazed areas providing a means of communication between the

outer and the inner worlds. We will deal with lounge bars and highly elegant res-

taurants capable of attracting a clientele not limited to those carrying suitcases.

And lastly there is the cultural thread. A page that until recently remained closed

to the hotel project book. We hope these models will be as interesting for you as

they were for us and we wish you a happy (first) viewing.

St. Moritz, in Switzerland, has always been a favoured destination of the jet set. In this mountain resort, with its enchanting landscape, Studio Keyart has designed private apartments inside the Kempinski Residences, annexed to the five-star Kempinski Grand Hotel des

Bains. The images show the creation of a holiday apartment, of about 1,000 sq m, divided into two parts: a principal apartment and a guests’ apartment. The principal apartment is subdivided in its turn into private areas and common spaces. Inside the suite

are a night zone, dressing-room, makeup zone and a large bathroom-wellbeing area. The common spaces have a separate entrance and consist of an equipped vestibule, a large lounge, a dining-room, a kitchen and a catering area for the hotel services.

Riyadh Gallery Hotel will soon occupy an area of the imposing Riyadh Gallery Mall, one of the most important commercial centres of the Saudi capital. A visionary structure offering a hybrid combination of hospital and shopping experiences, of luxurious mall environment

and hotel structure. It takes concrete form by creating an ad hoc pathway through the principal lobby and by the routes to the different floors, putting the hotel guests in direct communication with the mall. The hotel appears as the pulsing heart of the entire complex. A

restaurant zone and a perspective of the suite

crossroads of activities, people and functions, in a flux of atmospheres where dynamic places integrate with relaxation spaces and traditional hospitality. The hotel complex will have 256 rooms ranging from standard to family and suites. ‘For this new hotel structure’, the architect Favetta explains, ‘I took as my model graphic elements from local tradition, but I recombined them with symbols and colours of western culture. In this play of patterns I bore in mind the extent to which tradition is ingrained in this people,

and how important it is for their mentality to regenerate the past through a new and stimulating personalization’. The spirit of this project is to create in Riyadh the first ‘traditional boutique hotel’. An innovatory concept for this city of six million inhabitants: its hospitality sector still lacked a place offering experiments outside the traditional canons.

The Hotel Milano Scala, a zero emissions hotel, is located in the heart of Milan. The structure has 62 rooms, of which 10 are Suites or Junior Suites. It has seven floors plus one more, the last, set up as a panoramic terrace. Marchetti dealt with the design of the common

zones, the lift exit areas and the corridors leading guests to their rooms. The world of the theatre is the principal theme around which the design was developed. From the reception area suggesting a foyer to the Primadonna lounge bar evoking the atmosphere of

an elegant salon. Books and items relating to the subject, and classical music in the background. Everything seems to have been chosen to communicate to the guest a story that has brought greatness to a theatre and to the city that hosts it.

Townhouse Street is a project born in Milan, but easily exported. A commercial space, on the ground floor of Via Goldoni 33, transformed into the suites of the first hotel fronting on the street, completely computerized. An idea of Alessandro Rossi, given material form by the architect Smone Micheli, gave birth to these ‘apartments’, unprecedented both in their concept and their image. A vision of hospitality that sets aside the stereotypes of the canonical hotel. Missing from the scheme are the reception area, lobby, stairs, lifts and corridors. The single suites give directly onto the city and have independent access from the window fronting onto the street, electronically controlled by an alpha-numerical type-

Beppe Riboli conceived the external architecture and the interior design of the Mo.om Hotel-Motel, a short distance from Malpensa Airport, Milan. The structure consists of a central body, the hotel, with 62 rooms (including 2 suites); two lateral bodies, the motel, with 76 rooms (38 suites); a more separate body, the dependence, alongside a tree-lined avenue, consisting of 6 suites; a further, independent, body, called the Super-Suite or UFO, making a total of 152

rooms. The separate yet close bodies of the architectural complex express the ambivalent presence of two different but related realities: hotel and motel. The project for this eco-friendly hotel was the fruit of a collaboration between Riboli and the architect Mario Grosso, a specialist in bio-climatic designs and technologies who was responsible for the futuristic triple-generation power-plant: a system combining production of electricity and heat, providing both heating and cooling.

The new creation by the prolific Studio of Luca Scacchetti will arise in Chisinau (Republic of Moldova). A five-star hotel inserted in a pre-existing concrete structure. On the upper floors, 30 rooms and a presidential suite. On the ground floor, as well as the

reception area and the hall, a bar open to the public and a gourmet restaurant specializing in creative Italian cuisine. All these zones open to the exterior with a large glazed area projecting the life of the hotel outwards. On the sixth floor, another bar with a panoramic view

of the city, intended as an evening restaurant for small snacks and a meeting place for night entertainment, open to hotel guests and external clientele. A beauty centre and a spa are planned for the basement.
