In 1 890 an exped i t i on was sent in to M exi co under th e auspice s

o f the Academy of N atu ral S ciences o f Phi l ade l ph i a , and i n charge

of Prof. Ange l o He i l prin . The work extended from the O rizabaregion to the Pen insul a o f Yucat an , whe re Mr . Witm e r S ton e , th e

O rni tho logis t o f the party,i nc idental ly co l lected about th ree hundred

plan ts . These were approx imate ly de termined by the l a te Mr . J . H .

Redfie ld and di s t rib uted,as about n i ne ty-five spec ies

,i n the herb

arium o f the Academy,whence they have been kindly reas sembled

by Mr . S t ewardson B rown , and communi cated to me fo r s tudy by
