FEEDING PETS OF THE HOMELESS
From the Founder/President . . .
The Annual Report provides me with an opportunity to reflect on the past year’s
accomplishments. It is during this time that I pause to recognize you; our donors, our member
collection sites, the distributing organizations, the volunteers, the doctors, board of directors
and staff. I am reminded of the good that
you have done in communities across the
country.
I am inspired by you, the member collection
sites and your efforts to help feed hungry
pets in your communities.
I am inspired by you, the distributing
organizations that offer the pet food
donations to the poorest in your
communities.
I am inspired by you, the donors for your
generosity that allows Pets of the Homeless
to provide veterinary care and sponsor
wellness clinics. You can be confident
knowing that your money is well spent. 84%
goes directly to programs and makes a true
difference in the lives of pets that belong to
the homeless.
I am inspired by the many veterinarians and
their staff that we call upon to assist with emergencies across the country.
I am inspired by you, the volunteers who recruit collection sites, make pickups and deliveries,
fundraise, and provide transportation to get an ill or injured pet to a hospital.
I am inspired by you, the staff that keeps the momentum rolling.
Every one of you has added to the success of Pets of the Homeless.
With sincere appreciation,
Genevieve Frederick

FEEDING PETS OF THE HOMELESS
From the Executive Director
Looking back on the accomplishments of 2013, I am reminded that everything that Pets of the
Homeless does is possible only with the support of our dedicated donors, members and
volunteers.
Teamwork is the key that gives us the national scope we need to bring help to companion pets
owned by homeless people. Our partnership with you is what keeps us running.
Since 2008, we’ve reduced the number of companion animals that are in need of food and
emergency veterinary care.
Every day, we grow stronger and bigger: This year we helped over 2,700 companion pets owned
by homeless people with emergency veterinary care and/or vaccinations.
These accomplishments give me real hope that every year, we are making a difference.
Thank you for your support, which helps us grow and continue our collaborative work to help
pets of the homeless. Together, we are changing society.
Sincerely,
Renee Lowry

FEEDING PETS OF THE HOMELESS
Mission Statement Through the “Pets of the Homeless” program, we will do our part in helping to reduce hunger in
pets belonging to the homeless and provide veterinary care for pets of the homeless in
communities across the country.
We believe in the healing power of companion pets and of the human/animal bond which is
very important to life.
Our actions will include the following:
Promote to veterinarians and pet related businesses the importance of joining the
program as a collection site
Campaign to food distributing organizations the importance of distributing pet food to
the less fortunate
Speak out on the issue of pets of homeless and the disadvantaged
Provide funding to licensed veterinarians and other nonprofit organizations that meet
our objective to administer veterinary care to pets of the homeless
Provide pet sleeping crates to homeless shelters
Brief History Feeding Pets of the Homeless, also known as Pets of the Homeless, received nonprofit status in
July 2008 as a public charity. We are a
volunteer member organization that provides
pet food and veterinary care to the homeless
in local communities across the United States
and a few in Canada. The pet food is collected
by our 471 member collection sites and
volunteers and then delivered to over 400
food banks, soup kitchens and homeless
shelters. Accordingly, our collection sites
have provided over 226 tons of pet food,
which in turn is one less worry for a homeless
person on a given day.
Pets of the Homeless has awarded funding to veterinarians that meet our objectives of
providing veterinary care to pets of the homeless. Since 2008, we have awarded over $173,800
for vet care, pet food and crates and have assisted with veterinary care to over 10,400 pets. We
provide pet sleeping crates to shelters so homeless can bring their pets in with them and receive
the social services that will help get them out of homelessness.

Demographics Each year, 3.5 million experience homelessness in America
and more everyday are facing homelessness. Over 76% are
chronically homeless due to a physical disability,
developmental disability, HIV/AIDS, mental illness and
substance abuse problems. We estimate that as many as 10-
25% have pets. Many people are facing homelessness for
many reasons and the situation is getting worse. The need
for pet food and veterinary care is at an all-time high.
The homeless with pets receive various forms of assistance
from Pets of the Homeless, sometimes just an ear to listen
to their struggles of daily survival. The website is kept
current so you the donors of pet food and the homeless
who need pet food can find appropriate locations.
2013 shows a decrease in pet food donations.

Veterinary Care Through generous donations Pets of the Homeless can continue to help homeless who do not
have the resources to prevent diseases with wellness exams nor for emergencies due to illness
or injuries.
Each year the number of cases increases as more homeless advocates find our website or
through word of mouth in homeless groups.
Many of the cases are reported on Facebook and/or our monthly e-newsletter. Subscribers
often communicate their heartfelt thanks.
Thanks from a Veteran "Again I cannot express my gratitude to
Pets of the Homeless as not only were they
the only organization, their quick and
decisive action saved my Service Animal
who is more like my child, but also me, as I
cannot tell anyone who has not
experienced the feeling of isolated
helplessness when your beloved friend is
so sick and ill, you feel so disgusted that
you do not have the resources to provide
the lifesaving attention they need and you
do everything you can possibly do and
then you realize time is running out for
them and then you get a call back and find
out that indeed although you are one of
the invisible people, others look at you but
don't see you, as though you don't exist or
perhaps prefer if you didn't. Finally after
all that Pets of The Homeless will help you.
"Girley was diagnosed with pancreatitis and her kidneys were failing she was in all actuality dead
without Pets of the Homeless' intervention on my behalf she received IV infusion of antibiotics
for 36 hours along with tests and x rays which I could not have done at the time and I have her
now. She is getting her strength back and now her appetite is back...tail wagging. I am a
disabled American veteran I have been disfigured during my service for my country and when I
finally had to ask for help for the one thing I hold dear to me, the only thing in the world I have
left, not one agency, not one so called charity, not one vet that I contacted, and I can say that
Renee with Pets of the Homeless, you are a lifesaver and Girley's guardian angel..thank you so
very much." David

How donation dollars are spent Each one dollar that was donated in 2013, $.84 went to program expenses, $.06 went to
advertising and fundraising and $.10 went towards general expenses including salaries.
From The Better Business Bureau - their standards seek to ensure that the charity spends its
funds honestly and prudently, whereas the charity spends at least 65% of its total expenses on
program activities, and spend no more than 35% of related contributions on fund raising. Pets
of the Homeless has demonstrated that we use funds in a very reasonable way.

Goals for the future . . . • Increase pet food donations
Fundraise and apply for grants to be able to hire more staff • Increase media coverage to stimulate public action and support • Increase the number of collection sites to every state and in cities which have the largest homeless populations • Increase the number of collection site members that report their successes and stories • Increase e-newsletter subscriptions • Bring awareness to homeless shelters about Pets of the Homeless Crate Project. The project allows pets of the homeless to sleep comfortably and safely next to their owners. This is an important first step to help homeless get the services they require to end their homelessness and begin a new life with their companion pet.
