The Dry Stone Walling Association of Great Britain (DSWA), founded in 1968, is a registered charity that works to

advance education in the craft and heritage of dry stone walling. The Association relies on subscriptions for much of its

regular income.

The Association, in partnership with Lantra Awards, operates the only nationally accredited progressive assessment

scheme for skills in dry stone walling at Levels 1, 2 and 3 and leading to the DSWA Master Craftsman certificate. All

current professional wallers are issued with a Professional Member card stating name, level of certification and year of

membership. If you have any doubt about the credentials of any waller or dyker - on this list or otherwise - please

contact DSWA for advice.

Definitions for Levels of Certification

MASTER CRAFTSMAN CERTIFICATE HOLDERS: have a proven ability to produce quality work to a high

standard in a variety of commercial situations including the construction of a full range of features, eg steps, stiles,

sheep holes, pillars, arches, etc. They have progressed through the other levels of certification.

ADVANCED CERTIFICATE HOLDERS: have a proven ability to build set pieces of work with an emphasis on

finish and quality including construction of retaining walls, curves and work on sloping ground. They will also hold

the Intermediate certificate.

INTERMEDIATE CERTIFICATE HOLDERS: have demonstrated their ability to construct a sound, free-

standing dry stone wall which includes a cheekend.

INITIAL CERTIFICATE HOLDERS: have demonstrated their ability to rebuild gaps in free-standing dry stone

walls.

How to use this Register

The Register confirms that all those listed are capable of carrying out work to at least the standard of the level of

certification held.

Each entry gives the member’s contact details including email and website information if available. The on-line

version of the register provides direct links to professional members' websites where further information about the

individual's work can be viewed.

The Register is divided into countries and England is further divided into counties to enable you to find certificated

professional wallers/dykers near you (see page 3). However, please note that many wallers/dykers work anywhere

and it may be useful to check adjacent areas if you are close to a boundary.

Each entry also has a Work Code against it, if provided. Many of our members work countrywide so it is worth

considering Work Code "D" entries when seeking wallers/dykers. The work codes are shown overleaf.

Each section is further subdivided according to the level of certification held by the member. The highest level of

certification - the Master Craftsman Certificate is obtained after testing over a variety of features, having also gained

the other certificates. A brief explanation of the levels of certification is shown above.

Certificates are issued following successful tests carried out in front of the Association’s Examiners who require an

increasing standard in the quality of work to be demonstrated at each progressive level of certification.

As with other contractors, it is good practice to obtain several price estimates, examine previous work and if in

doubt, contact the Association to check the level of competence of the waller concerned.

This Register also includes a section for Corporate members, some of which supply stone. The Register information is

available on the DSWA website, www.dswa.org.uk, from within the Members section and under the Contractors and

Corporate heading respectively. The website is regularly updated.

In cases of disputes/problems relating to quality of work, the Association can recommend a short list of consultants who

are available to inspect work. A fee may be required. Details available from the DSWA Office. The Association does

not deal with disputes/complaints relating to contractual issues.

Clients are urged to seek confirmation from wallers and dykers that they have sufficient public liability insurance for the

work in hand.

It is very difficult for the Association to be able to give a "current rate" for dry stone walling. Output rates are variable

due to stone type, terrain, dressing required, etc. Where the highest quality walling is required, the reduced speed of

work may result in a consequent increase in the per metre price.

Pinnacle Award Scheme

The Pinnacle Award Scheme recognises projects of highest quality or particularly unusual dry stone walling work.

Successful projects have varied from a traditional Blackhouse in Scotland to sheep pens built by the National Trust in the

Peak District and a number of private commissions. If you are involved with a prestigious or unusual project, do consider

its possible eligibility for this scheme. Further details about the Pinnacle Award Scheme and an application form are

available on request from the DSWA Office.
