COURSES

PREPARED

World Regional Geography A lower-division course that provides an

introduction to basic geographical concepts. The course examines regional

elements of physical, cultural, historical, economic, and political geography.

Introduction to Human Geography A lower-division course that introduces

human geography through lecture, writing exercises, and group “field”

projects. Students investigate in-depth case studies that show how geography

shapes political, social and economic processes of the world around us.

Population Geography An upper-division/graduate course that examines

population processes and patterns of mortality, fertility, and migration in a

contemporary, international geographic setting. The class combines lectures,

exercises, and discussions.

Inequality USA An upper-division/graduate course to understand how and why

US inequality exists. Students learn how to study various spaces, which include

individuals, groups, neighborhoods, communities, organizations, institutions,

governments, & states as products & producers of inequality.

Mega-Cities An upper-division/graduate-level seminar that provides a global

perspective on the nature of urbanization, the forces behind these patterns,

and their effects on the social, political, economic, and environmental

organization and governance of the world’s largest mega-cities.

Silverton Field Experience An upper-division/graduate-level field course that

focuses on Silverton, Colorado’s cultural and physical landscapes. Participants

select an overarching, central question related to the fieldsite and develop a

research project based on that question.

Race, Ethnicity, and Place An upper-division/graduate course that concerns

the dynamics and processes of racialization in varying U.S. urban contexts. The

class emphasizes discussion, as well as learning the methods utilized by

geographers in exploring race, ethnicity, and place.

Global Migration An upper-division/graduate-level seminar that outlines how

international migration has become a major factor in economic, political, and

cultural change. Current themes such as transnationalism, citizenship, and the

consequences of migration are discussed and critiqued by students.

Geographic Summit for Undergraduate Students An upper-division “capstone”

course reviewing the breadth and depth of the discipline of geography,

engaging in professional engagement, preparing a CV / resume, and learning

the particulars of career planning strategies for geographers.

Geographic Research Methods for Graduate Students A graduate-level

seminar that focuses on the analysis of research topics and methodologies in

geography. Students will define a research topic, review literature in their field

of interest, and prepare a research proposal.
