Downtown Missoula is a major destinationand economic driver due to the leadership and work of theDowntown Missoula Partnership, which is comprised of:• Missoula Downtown Association (MDA)• Downtown Business Improvement District (BID)• Missoula Downtown Foundation (MDF)

The Missoula Downtown Association is comprised of its members: proud and dedicated peoplewho work together to fulfill the mission to promote, supportand enhance the vitality of Downtown Missoula for the betterment of the community.

For more than 40 years, the MDA hasplayed a significant role in fostering thehealth of Downtown by:

• Encouraging historical preservation and enhancement of Downtown’s physical beauty

• Creating a unique ambiance by supporting the development of riverfront trails and parks

• Creating and maintaining street improvement and place-making projects

• Serving as the primary advocate for Downtown and maintaining quality relationships and open communicationswith local municipalities and community organizations

•Maintaining and programming Missoula’s Town Square— Caras Park—with more than 100 annual events

• Planning and producing more than 30 community events each year that draw nearly half a million visitors to the heart of Downtown

About the MDA

The MDA is an award-winning, local non-profit organization,supported by the community as a whole through membership, events, and volunteerism.

Major MDA events produced annually include:

• Winter Brewfest: late February

• Garden City Brewfest: first Saturday in May

• Out to Lunch Summer Series:Wednesdays in June, July and August

• Downtown ToNight Summer Series: Thursdays in June, July and August

• River City Roots Festival – Missoula’s Signature Celebration: last weekend in August

• Parade of Lights and Lighting of the Tree:first Saturday in December

• Festival of Trees: In early December

In addition to events, the MDA spends significant resources on advocacy, implementation of the Downtown Master Plan,membership recruitment and retention, and membership services such as Downtown Gift Cards, business guides, calendars, planning tools and more.

ToursDowntown Public Art A vital component of any urban land-scape, the presence of public art in acommunity signifies the character of theneighborhood. Downtown Missoula has awealth of public art and culture. Listedbelow are over 20 works of public art on display in the Downtown area alone.

1. Wagon WheelThe Wagon Wheel mural is on the north wall of the Clyde Coffee on the southeastcorner of Higgins and Fourth.

2. Peace WorksPeace Works was created by area high school students Peter Bradstock, SarahJackson, Amanda Keeland, Brittany Kirkland, Sarah Logan, Yuki Sugimoto, andTara Westle with artist Amie Thurber in thesummer of 2000. A mural celebrating diversity with a colorful, festive atmosphere,Peace Works is located at the rear entranceof the Jeannette Rankin Peace Center at 519 S. Higgins.

3. Dreaming MissoulaThe Dreaming Missoula sculpture is in the Clark Fork Natural Park on the south side of the Clark Fork River near the OrangeStreet bridge. The sculpture was createdin 1994 by Lynne Hull and Kioko Mwitki, anative of Kenya. Hull sculpted the wood elements, and Mwitki fabricated the metal components.

4. ReturningsThe Returnings sculpture (pictured right)is on the East Side of the Higgins AvenueBridge just north of the Clark Fork River.Created by Jeffrey Funk in 1989 as a project of the City of Missoula Public ArtCommittee, these three large bronze fishtwist among boulders and are a favoriteamong children.

5. Untitled The untitled mural in Bess Reed Park onthe south end of Clay Street is behind theHoliday Inn Missoula Downtown along theClark Fork River. Painted by Big BrothersBig Sisters in 1997, this mural features volunteers and children.

6. Cattin’ AroundThe Cattin’ Around sculpture adorns Central Park parking garage in the 100 block of West Main Street. Mike Hollern created thiswhimsical, ferrous cement depiction of asprawled alley cat in 1991 as a project of theCity of Missoula Public Arts Committee. Morerecently, the sculpture has been mentionednationally as a must see for cat lovers. Asmall puddle of water collects on the catsback to create a birdbath.

7. Studebaker The Studebaker on the side of the Studebaker Building at 216 West Main Street was created by noted local artist StanHughes in 2000. The work pays tribute to thehistorical background of the StudebakerBuilding and the heart of the Gasoline Alleyhistoric area, which evolved on West MainStreet in the early 1900s and was a project ofthe City of Missoula Public Arts Committee.

8. Uptown TilesThe Uptown Apartments, located at 329Woody Street, has 500 colorful 6-inch ceramic tiles mounted on seven large concrete planters made by hundreds ofpeople at a First Night Missoula celebration.

9. E.S. Paxson MuralsThe E.S. Paxson Murals are located inside the Missoula County Courthouse at 200West Broadway. Created sometimebetween 1912 and 1914, these historicalscenes were painted on canvas with oils.

10. Veterans MemorialThe Veterans Memorial honors veterans ofWWI and WWII. Located on the MissoulaCounty Courthouse lawn on the corner ofBroadway and Ryman, this cast bronzesculpture of a WWI soldier was created byJ. Pauling in 1921. A 1927 plaque lists WWI veterans and a 1948 plaque listsWWII veterans..

11. The Heart of Missoula Murals

The Heart of Missoula murals are located at 111 West Broadway, at the corner ofBroadway and Higgins Avenues. Thesemurals are the result of a unique public/private collaboration between the MissoulaPublic Art Committee, the Missoula Redevelopment Agency, and Rick Bice.Artist Hadley Ferguson created seven largepanels depicting the University of Montanaand Downtown Missoula. The other fivepanels showcase various buildings andstreets as they existed in the early 1900sand feature the Star Garage, the KohnClock, early newspaper publishing, Missoula railroads, and the Garden City Brewery.

12. Scenic The Scenic mural, a painting of scenic mountains and rivers, was created by John Carlon in 1996 on the east side ofPlonk at 322 North Higgins Avenue.

13. Missoula Art ParkCompleted in the spring of 2017, the Missoula Art Park is Downtown Missoula’snew artistic offering. With a new outdoorgathering place complete with tables,chairs, benches, trees and plants, the ArtPark offers a place for folks to linger and anoutdoor restroom for the public’s use. TheMissoula Art Museum curates rotating artshows in the outdoor space, improving thequality of life for all.

14. Candy LandCompleted in 2007 at 403 North Higginsand commissioned by Keegan Eisenstat,this artwork represents a colorful landscapeof recreation opportunities.

15. PonderLocated indoors at 140 West Pine, Ponderwas designed by Mary Iverson to honor and inspire those who participate in the legislative process. As City Council andcommunity members walk down the longcorridor toward the Council Chambers, they are inspired to go through a process of clearing their minds of concerns for theirpersonal lives, and enter the non-partisan,objective mind set required for public service.

16. Walter Hook SeriesThe Walter Hook Series is located inside theChambers in City Hall at 435 Ryman Street.Painted in 1984-1985 by Missoula artistWalter Hook, the series of seven oils waspurchased with the Bill Cregg MemorialFund and was a project of the City of Mis-soula Public Art Committee.

17. Mountain Line Transfer Center Mural

The mural is located in the Mountain LineTransfer Center between the MissoulaCounty Courthouse and City Hall. Themural features 200 tiles decorated with deer,eagles, bears, trout, bitterroots, roses, andother symbols that represent the naturalheritage of Montana. The mural was created in April of 2000 by Missoula CountyPublic School students with the help oftheir art instructors Katherine Lynch, Jackie Alford, Carla Getz and SusanneWoyciechowicz, with local artist Dana Boussard.

18. Proper ShoppersInstalled at the Mountain Line Transfer Center in 2002, the Proper Shoppers solidbronze sculpture was created by Missoulaartist Tom Rippon, a ceramics professor atUM, and is a project of the City of MissoulaPublic Art Committee. The stylized grand-mother and her favorite grandchild watch as dozens of buses and hundreds of pedestrians scurry about.

19. Virgin MaryThe Virgin Mary sculpture is set in a river cobble grotto in the side garden of St. Francis Xavier Church at 420 West Pine Street. Sculpture and creation date unknown.

20. Wall of 100 Hearts Located at The Heart Institute at ProvidenceSt. Patrick Hospital, these heartfelt mosaicswere made by the sixth grade classes ofWashington Middle School in 2002. As inspiration for the patients, each heart wascreated by an individual student. Teachers Joni McNeil and Mary Gillhousecoordinated with the art direction fromJayne Piazza.

21. First Night Tile Project

The First Night Tile Project is on the North-side/Westside Pedestrian Bridge near theGrand and First Street intersection. Createdby children and adults who participated inthe First Night Missoula public tile project onNew Year’s Eve 1999, these tiles were installed in April 2000. The theme featuresanimals of all types.

22. Crossings The Crossings sculpture is located in front ofthe Northern Pacific Railroad Depot at thenorth end of Higgins Avenue. Consisting offour large red Xs made of enamel on metalwith concrete wing walls and platform set ona stone ballast, it represents railroad themes.“Crossings” is a project of the City of MissoulaPublic Art Committee. Created by Taag Peterson in 1986, the XXXXs relate to the tall trestles necessary for crossing mountain ravine.

23. John MullanThe John Mullan marble sculpture is located in the plaza at the end of North Higgins Avenue in front of the Northern Pacific Railroad Depot. Created in 1914 andone of just six sculptures remaining, thisstructure was erected to mark the route of the wagon road, surveyed and built by John Mullan, from Fort Benton to Fort Walla Walla on the Columbia River.

24. Brennan’s WaveThis Caras Park sculpture, viewing platformand whitewater feature in the Clark ForkRiver are named after world-class Missoulakayaker Brennan Guth, who died in Chile in2001 pursuing his sport and passion.

25. A Carousel for Missoula

“If you will give it a home, and promise noone will ever take it apart, I will build ACarousel for Missoula.” That was the promise Missoula cabinet-maker Chuck Kaparich made to the Missoula City Councilin 1991. By opening day, May 27, 1995, over100,000 hours of volunteer time had goneinto the construction of 38 permanent ponies,three replacement ponies, two chariots, 14gargoyles, gargoyle frames and mirrorframes, and the largest band organ in continuous use in the United States, all withina jewel box building. You can find it at 101Carousel Drive.

26. Dragon HollowDragon Hollow is a magical playgroundadjacent to A Carousel for Missoula. Theplayland was the combined effort of artistsand consultants from Leathers and Associates, Inc. Dragon Hollow was builtby 6,000 volunteers in just nine days.

27. Mountain WatersCurrents Aquatic CenterThe City of Missoula Public Art Committeecommissioned Missoula artist JamesTodd to create a design to be sandblastedby Nash, Inc. on the exterior of the Currents Aquatic Center. Todd’s MountainWaters design features motifs of North-western wildlife amidst cascading waters.

28. Go with the FlowThis sculpture, which stands 20 feet tall at its highest point, is located at the ParkPlace Parking Structure, and tells thestory of changing water, an element thatdesigner Mike Golins speaks deeply topeople in Missoula. “We fish on rivers,tube them, even”, he said, “learn life lessons from their currents.” Golins’ design is a rolling wave that pours into acrashing one that flows into an eddy, andthe entire structure points from DowntownMissoula to the Clark Fork River.

Other Downtown Area Public Art:• MCFDThe Missoula City Fire Departmentmural is a bas-relief located in thearched alcove on the west side of theMissoula Headquarters Fire Station atthe corner of Pine and Madison. RudyAutio created this colorful work project of the City of Missoula Public Art Committee in 1995 with scenes relating to fire-fighting history.

• Untitled The untitled mural at the YWCA, locatedat 1130 West Broadway, is a beautifultribute to the courage and transforma-tion of women. The mural was designedand produced in 2000 by area highschool students Amanda Keeland,Melissa McNay, Carla Rothenbuecher,AC Rothenbuecher and Rachel Baileywith artist Amie Thurber.

• Flower BasketsDesigned by local artist Russell Smith,the son of Russell Smith, Sr., afterwhom the Federal Courthouse isnamed, the Downtown Flower basketswere created in two batches and hungin 1981 and 1985. Each of the 72 baskets are individually-designed andcrafted with a theme of their own. TheMissoula Downtown Association hangsand waters the flowers throughout thesummer months.

• Boulevard BannersIntroduced in 1999, the banners (pictured left) feature four designs onfour distinctly-colored fabrics. The art-work on three banners depict scenes of Missoula taken from a Mark Gutowwatercolor painting. A project fostered byMark Gorseth, the banners are changedseasonally by the Missoula DowntownAssociation and cover all of the lightposts throughout Downtown.

Historic Walking TourHistory can never be covered up, saidChinese Prime Minister Zhu Rongji, andthose words could never be truer than inDowntown Missoula. Take the time tolook up as you tour the many and variedhistorical landmarks listed below, and

remnants of the past will appear to you in tucked-away corners.Count the historic billboards of long-forgotten places like the Atlantic Hotel and the Diner Cafe and you will see the many layers of history like layers of an onion in the story of Missoula.

Tours

1. Wilma Building 131 S. Higgins

Previously known as the Smead-SimonsBuilding, this eight-story Sullivanesque-stylebuilding was commonly referred to as theShowplace of Montana after it was constructed in 1921. It was built by WilliamBilly Simons, an early western entrepreneur,who produced Wild West shows and builtseveral theaters in Oregon, Idaho, andAlaska during the Gold Rush. The theaterbecame a living memorial to his wife, EdnaWilma, a famous light opera star. The historic interior of the Wilma building wasmost recently remodeled in 2015 with stateof the art sound and lighting systems, andrestoring much of the original décor makingit one of the top music venues of its size in the United States. The Wilma was Missoula’s first steel framed modern high-rise building.

2. Florence Building 111 N. Higgins

Constructed in 1941, the Florence Buildingoccupies the same site as two earlier Florence Hotels, both of which burneddown. Much like the east section of thePalace Hotel (Broadway & Ryman), thishotel was built to accommodate the increasing number of automobile travelers,and included an interior, multi-level parkinggarage. Today this excellent example of ArtModerne architecture has been convertedto an office complex with retail businessesoccupying the main floor. The Governor’sRoom, located on the second floor, is stillused as a ballroom/banquet room for special events. The Lobby was recently refurbished to its original state and is alsoavailable for special events.

3. Headquarters Building / Daily Annex 113-119 W. Front

Advertised as an Ornament to the Streetwhen constructed in 1888 as a men’s socialclub and saloon, this building and its 1916partner to the west, the Daily CompanyAnnex, were remodeled over the years withwide metal panels and modern windowsdominating the front facade. In 1892 thebuilding witnessed a major fire and the mysterious murder of Maurice Higgins, son ofa Missoula founder. The Headquarters’ 1990srestoration captures the feel of Missoula’sred-light district of the 1880s while the DailyAnnex addresses the reform movement toshut down the district. Recognized with both local and state preservation awards, theHeadquarters Building/Daily Annex contains anice display of artifacts and project progresson the second floor. Today the building ishome to Bella Sauvage and Laurel CreekClothing & Gifts.

4. Gleim II Building 255 & 257 W. Front

The Gleim II was a brothel owned and operated by Mary Gleim, whose splashy career included conviction for attempted murder of a rival and a prison term in DeerLodge. Built around 1893, after two majorfires swept the Downtown, this red brick,sage-green building was restored in 1995 and captured a Historic Preservation Awardfor that effort. This building was one of eightowned by Gleim during the peak years ofMissoula’s Red Light District. Mother Gleimretained title to this two-story vernacular commercial-style brick building until her death in 1914.

5. Gleim Building 265 W.Front

This classically-styled brick building servedas the headquarters for Mary Gleim’s bordello businesses along Front Street from early 1890s to approximately 1914.Original arches were uncovered in a 1980’srenovation. Listed in the National Registerof Historic Places, this building is an excellent example of Romanesque Revivalarchitecture with its arched windows, brickpilasters, checkerboard banding, and granite sills. Through its lifetime, businesseslocated here included the Pullman Pool Hall (1929), Carroll Nash Cigars (1932), and the Hawthorne Club, a 1940s jazz club.

6. Studebaker Building 216 W. Main

As the automobile gained popularity in the1910s, stables and garages existed side byside. The succession of businesses at thisaddress documents the transition that musthave been hard on the old timers. By 1921,the Main Street Motor Company advertisedrepairs and rental space for 70 vehicleshere. Louis Nybo sold Studebakers, thechoice of the Missoula police force until the 1950s.

7. Palace Hotel 147 W. Broadway

First opened as the Savoy Hotel in 1909,this building is one of the few remainingsymbols of the prosperous period of timewhen the expansion of the railroad throughMissoula enhanced the growth of the lumber and manufacturing industries. Theoriginal structure and a 1941 annex formedMissoula’s largest single hotel. As timepassed, the hotel’s upper floors became an empty, decaying shell, but a 1995 rehabilitation project created 60 upper-floor housing units. Today the Palace Apartments beautifully illustrate how preservation can rejuvenate a city center.

8. Missoula County Courthouse 200 W.Broadway

The neo-classical style sandstone Courthouse (pictured below left) was designed by prominent local architect, A.J.Gibson, and completed in 1910. Features ofthe building include the impressive clocktower which houses a two-ton bell, massiveIonic support columns, copper-faced entrydoors, and vertical panels of beveled glass.Eight murals created by well-known westernartist, Edgar S. Paxson, hang in the building’s entryway and document the valley’s early history.

9. Simons Block 314 N. Higgins

Built in 1899, the Simons Building is one of Downtown Missoula’s newest additions to the National Register of Historic Places,earning honors in 2000. Named after Missoula businessman Louis N. Simons,the building was originally an art store thatevolved into a general hardware store in the1920s. It was also home to one of the city’slast bordellos. The second floor was vacantfor close to 30 years before Dick Clemowbegan renovation.

10. Higgins Block 202 N. Higgins

The Higgins Block, commissioned by Missoula co-founder C.P. Higgins in 1889, isMissoula’s finest example of Queen Annecommercial architecture. Higgins was one of Missoula County’s original county commissioners and a member of Montana’sfirst Territorial Legislature. The Higgins Blockincludes the gray granite, copper-domedcorner building and the red poly-chromedbrick structures to the north and east. ThisNational Register building, was restored inthe early 1980s. The Higgins Block is hometo several businesses today, including Opportunity Bank, Doc’s Gourmet Sandwich Shop, and Butterfly Herbs.

11. Masonic Temple 120-136 E. Broadway

Built in 1909, the Masonic Temple is theonly Beaux Arts style building in Missoula’scentral business district. Particularly notablefor its arched bays, elaborate terra cotta cornice, frieze work, and its elevator, thebuilding still serves as home to the Masons in addition to numerous office and retail businesses.

12. U.S. Post Office & Federal Building 200 E. Broadway

Designed in the Italian Renaissance revivalstyle and constructed of Indiana limestoneand granite, this building was formerly calledthe Federal Building. The original buildingwas erected between 1911-1913, and theeast addition was built in 1929. The northaddition was erected in 1937. Listed on theNational Register of Historic Places thebuilding housed the U.S. Federal DistrictCourt from 1929 to the mid 1990’s, and continues to be the home to Region 1 of the US Forest Service.

13. Carnegie Library/Missoula Art Museum 335 N. Pattee

Designed by A.J. Gibson and built in 1902-03, the Carnegie Library presents itself as atemple of learning in the style of Carnegie libraries across the country. Gibson’s windows add a noticeable design aspectthrough their lighter-colored stone surrounds capped by keystones, whichstand in high contrast to the dark brick walls.The second story, designed by Gibson’s assistant, Ole Bakke, was added in 1913.The building currently houses the MissoulaArt Museum. The modern addition to thesouth was added in 2006, and increasedthe usable area in the Museum by almostfifty percent.

14. Northern Pacific Railroad Depot Railroad & N. Higgins

When the track of the Northern Pacificreached Missoula in 1883, it was possiblythe most significant event in the town’s history. Reliable transportation created amajor economic and commercial distribution hub for Western Montana. This depot building was designed by Reedand Stem, a celebrated architectural firmfrom St. Paul, Minn., that designed over 100depots in America, including New YorkCity’s Grand Central Station. Built in 1901,this National Historic Register building is an architecturally significant example of simplified Renaissance Revival architecture, which represents the historic importance of rail transportation to this city.

15. St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church 420 W.Pine

Constructed between 1891 and 1892, thischurch is a major religious, architectural,and artistic landmark in Missoula. Its 144-foot-high polygonal tent roof spire con-tinues to be a landmark of the Missoula skyline. The interior of this National Register church contains muralspainted around 1900 by Brother J. Carignano, who also painted the murals in the St. Ignatius Mission.

16. Lewis and Clark Interpretive Site Caras Park

If you wish to learn more about the Lewis& Clark Expedition’s journey through theMissoula Valley in 1805 and 1806, theBritish Explorer David Thompson's brief visitin 1812, and the French-Canadian's andSalish Indian's unique names for the area,there are four large and detailed local his-tory interpretive signs located at Caras Park along the Clark Fork Riverfront Trail in Downtown Missoula (nextto the Brennan's Wave Overlook).

Missoula’s DowntownHistoric Districts

East Pine Street Historic DistrictMissoula’s first exclusive residential areagrew up along East Pine Street, and todayit’s one of Missoula’s seven historical districts. The predominating man-made feature and unifying visual element of theDistrict is its historic boulevard, which consists of approximately 15-foot-wideboulevards with large maple trees on eachside of the street and a unique 25-foot-widegrass median. There are a variety of historicbuildings, most of them are multi-family orsingle-family residences built between 1872 and 1940. All but six of the 50 majorbuildings were constructed before 1940.The district contains the city’s oldest residence (Francis Worden House 1874),and the A.J. Gibson designed GovernorJoseph Dixon mansion, both located in the 300 block of East Pine.

Southside Historic District This colorful historic district charts Missoula’s transformation from a rough frontier town to an established community.Anticipating a need to escape the flurry andbustle of Missoula’s town center north of the Clark Fork River, Federal Judge HiramKnowles platted this addition in 1890. By the mid-1890s, gracious Queen Anne styleresidences proclaimed the Southside as awealthy haven. Between 1908 and 1910,the arrival of the Chicago, Milwaukee andSt. Paul Railroad on the Southside's edgeadded the Milwaukee Depot. There are over 60 structures on the Southside Historic District walking tour.

University Area Historic DistrictBounded by South 4th St. E., Beckwith Avenue, Arthur Avenue and Higgins Avenue, the University Area Historic Districtwas officially placed on the National Register of Historic Places on December13, 2000. Missoula’s largest historic district,the University Area District contains somestunning examples of Queen Anne, Craftsman, and Revival styles of architecture.

Downtown Historic DistrictBounded by the Northern Pacific Railroad,the Clark Fork River to the south, Missoula’shistoric downtown is Missoula’s ninth Historic district. The district includes residential neighborhoods on both the eastand west sides, as well as the mixed usehistoric core that grew up between theNorthern Pacific Depot and the MissoulaMercantile, which was located next to theoriginal Missoula Mill site. Including the East Pine Street Historic District, there aremore than 450 contributing structures in thehistoric downtown district. More than 40downtown buildings are individually listed inthe National Register of Historic Places.

The Downtown Missoula Partnership is a unified entity comprised of the Missoula Downtown Association, the Business Improvement District and the Missoula Downtown Foundation. Each are here to serve ourcommunity in different ways!

The Missoula Downtown Association is a not-for-profit membership-based business organization

dedicated to promoting, supporting, and enhancing the vitalityof Downtown Missoula for the betterment of our community.Created in 1975, the organization strives to retain and promote Downtown Missoula as Western Montana's center of business, culture and entertainment; provide a forum formutual solutions to common problems Downtown; encouragepreservation and enhancement of the area's physical beauty;and create public awareness of the historic and cultural significance of Missoula's unique Downtown to thecommunity as a whole.

The Business Improvement Districtof Missoula enhances the vitality of Downtown by facilitating commerce, promoting investment,enhancing streetscapes, conducting maintenanceand improving security and safety. Created in

2005, the BID is funded by property owners within the District.

The Missoula Downtown Foundationis a public benefit corporation organized exclu-sively for charitable and educational purposes of supporting and promoting activities such as

the enhancement of the arts and culture, livability, economy,safety and infrastructure of the greater Downtown Missoulaarea. Created in 2010, the MDF's goal is to fund DowntownMissoula projects and infrastructure.
