Introduction

Peace and stability have significantly contributed to sustained high economic growth. The fruit of the growth has led to the mushrooming of higher education institutions, especially in Phnom Penh. Based on the statistics of the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports, there were 68 of them throughout the country in academic year 2006-2007. This large number of institutions provides ample opportunity and choices for students and their parents to select the one that best serves their interests.

However, this is not a true case for everyone. We witness a missing link between students’ choices and courses offered at university as there is insufficient information about programs provided by those institutions. Students, then, choose a certain subject or university because they see many of their friends or relatives are there, the tuition fee is affordable, majors they are going to study seem interesting, or they do not know where else to go and what else to study. The selection of a particular subject or university is not mainly because of the fact that they have done a thorough reading or consultation comparing the features and benefits of each program through a reliable university guide or directory.

This constraint more or less leads to the mismatch between subjects selected and students’ talents, aptitude and/or individual interests. It can also make them unable to select a degree which fits them financially. Besides, it can result in having too many students studying a few subjects and leaving the other subjects with few students. Consequently, there is a mismatch between the labor market and people with appropriate skills and knowledge.

It is the purpose of this directory to fill in this information gap. It serves as a guide for students to choose from a list of different subjects offered by different universities in Phnom Penh.

If you want to know which subject is available in which higher education institution and which institution has a scholarship program, the size of each higher education institution, and its student services, etc. then you are lucky that you have this book in your hand.

6

How to Use This Directory

This directory is divided into two main parts – the presentation of the basic information of the twenty five higher education institutions surveyed in Phnom Penh. This is followed by “Where to Go If …?” - a section detailing all the subjects offered by the twenty five institutions that participated in this survey so that individuals who are interested in a particular subject can know which university to go to for that subject.

7

About This Survey

In total, forty higher education institutions throughout Phnom Penh were contacted for information so as to compile this directory. However, only twenty five agreed to participate in this survey, while the others refused to participate in the survey, went unanswered for different reasons or provided too scant information to be included in this directory. This directory will present information about each institution in the alphabetical order.
