August, 2017Time:9:20 a.m. – 11:20a.m.

Venue:Capitanio Hall

Details of Resource Persons if any:Ms. Raisa Luther

The Department of Psychology arranged a guest lecture on 2nd

August, 2017 on „Substance

Use Disorders – Effects, Management and Treatment‟ for its BA Psychology, MSc

Applied Psychology and PGD Counseling students. The interactive session was taken by Ms.

Raisa Luther, Addiction Therapist at Hope Trust Rehabilitation Centre.

Keeping in mind the recent events wherein a drug racket was uprooted in Hyderabad and

students of many schools in the city had been targeted by drug peddlers; the practical

knowledge and skills to handle clients have become an imperative for a psychologist.

The areas focused upon were classification of drugs and its effects, characteristics of

addictions, treatment planning, psychological intervention and debunking myths.

The aim of the session was to equip students with the knowledge to understand the genesis of

drug addiction which initially begins as a recreational use and leads to substance dependence;

and the skills required to treat these addictions. The different drugs, the common names of

drugs, their accessibility and social acceptance were discussed as well.

Effects of drugs such as marijuana, alcohol, heroin, meth, cocaine and LSD varying from low

addictive properties to high addictive properties were elaborated upon; their long term

consequences were detailed. Treatment for these consists of three phases: opening phase,

middle phase and ending phase. Each phase of recovery was dissected for the better

understanding of the students, with the main focus being on Cognitive Behavioral Therapy

(CBT) and Bio-Psycho-Social Interview.

The session aimed at training students to determine the Level of Care (LOC) that the client

needs and recognizing emotional and behavioral complications. It also covered relapse,

reconstructive automatic thoughts and Leaving Against Medical Advice (LAMA).

The guest speaker was keen on the session being interactive for the students to best imbibe

knowledge, she did so with the help of her own personal experiences and a variety of case

studies. The session was an overall success and the Department of Psychology was much

appreciated for putting it all together.

Title of the programme: Workshop on Mindfulness

psychologist in India, and founder of Pause for Perspective

The Department of Psychology, on the 11th

Mindfulness for the students of 1st year M.Sc. Applied Psychology and PG Diploma -

Psychological Counselling Skills. The workshop was conducted by Ms.AarathiSelvan,

clinical psychologist and founder of Pause for Perspective. The session dealt with what

Mindfulness is all about and demonstrated few mindfulness techniques using several

activities that the students enthusiastically participated in. It was a very useful session and the

made the students reflect on their everyday mundane lives by engaging them in many

innovative activities.

students explore what mindfulness is and what are the components encompassing it. She went

on to elaborate on how mindfulness is the quality or state of being conscious or aware of

things around us and explained the definition given by Jon KabatZinn. The concept of self-

awareness was beautifully explained through an activity called “Messages to Myself” in

which the students were asked to create a collage, from the material available, which

conveyed messages that made them feel good. Some of the students gave a presentation on

the collage they had prepared.

The speaker, with the help of a bar of chocolate, explained how the sense of smell, sight,

feeling, hearing, and tasting is equally important as the sense of thinking. Also, she made the

students to ponder upon questions like “What is the colour of joy?”, “What is the sound of

joy?”, “What does love smell like?”

model of the brain. The speaker equipped the students with few quick mindfulness

techniques, which could be used at any point of time.

Title of the programme: Guest Lecture on Alternate Therapies.

Date: 15/09/2017 from 12pm to 2pm

Venue: St. Francis College for Women, Begumpet, Hyderabad.

Speaker: Mrs. Malathi A Rao.

Mrs Malathi A Rao who is one of the founder Directors of Aaradhya Learning and

Development Solutions Pvt Ltd, and an accredited EFT practitioner, was gracious to host the

1st year M.Sc. students of Applied Psychology, to explain what Alternate Therapies are and to

demonstrate the EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique).

Alternate Therapy is a therapy that is not a part of standard medical practice but used instead

of conventional treatment. The speaker started off by making the students explore about what

alternate therapy is and then extensively covered upon the concepts of Energy, Energy

Medicine and its different types, and EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique).

The speaker enlightened the students on how energy medicine, energy therapy, energy

healing, or spiritual healing are all branches of alternative medicine based on a pseudo-

scientific belief that healers can channel healing energy into a patient and effect positive

results.

The experiment “Water Crystals” by Dr. Emoto which is conducted in 1990‟s, which

explained how water picks up energy from the environment and manifests that energy into

forming a crystal was explained by the speaker which elaborated the connection between

water and energy in a human body through a demonstration. This was followed by

demonstrating the technique of “Zip up” (Protecting one‟s own energies).

The Emotional Freedom Technique was demonstrated using various examples for which all

the students participated as volunteers enthusiastically. The theory and the concepts behind

this technique were covered first, followed by the demonstration. The speaker explained

about how every human being has emotionswhich are natural and how an individual should

allow the emotional energy to flow by accepting and acknowledging it. This was further

explained by a demonstration using the EFT tapping points which are KC( The Karate Chop),

TOH(Top of the head), EB(at the beginning of the eyebrow), SE(Outside Corner of the eye),

UE(Under an Eye), UN(Bottom of your nose and the top of your upper lip),Ch(Midway

between the point of your chin and the bottom of your lower lip), CB(Collarbone), UA(Under

the Arm). The session was extremely interesting and informative. It helped the students gain

insight into Alternate Therapies in a very practical manner. This guest lecture also equipped

the students with several techniques of Alternate Therapy and ways to cope with their

everyday stress. Mrs. Malathi A Rao inspired the students upon exploring the field of

Alternate Therapies. Overall, it was an extremely useful and interactive session with a lot of

unbelievably effective demonstration.

Title of the Program: Drug Awareness Campaign

Date: July 27th

2017

Time: 8:30 AM to 10:30 AM

The Department of Psychology, along with the NCC and NSS units, organized a drug

awareness campaign on July 27th

2017 to create awareness among the students and in the

surrounding areas about the alarming increase in the prevalence of drug use in the city. The

awareness campaign started out with a walk on the streets around the campus. The students

prepared many banners and posters advocating slogans such as „Say No to Drugs‟, „Choose

to Refuse‟, „Drugs Ruin Lives‟, „Drug Abuse Has No Excuse‟ etc. The eye-catching posters

depicting the adverse effects of drug abuse and the slogans shouted by the students grasped

the attention of passers-by.

Students from the Department of Psychology, being familiar with the consequences of drug

abuse, spoke about the same in the college assembly addressing all the students. Information

about the signs and symptoms to look out for was disseminated. Emphasis was also given to

not taking up such habits in the first place. The students discussed the behavioural and

psychological changes a person may display when he/she is on drugs. The Principal summed

up the talk by encouraging students to keep an eye out on any person who might need help in

letting go of the habit or is struggling with it. The important message that the students

communicated was that life is too precious to waste it away using drugs.

Social Outreach

M.Sc. – I – Applied Psychology - Community Outreach Program

Outreach is an activity of providing services to any populations who might not otherwise

have access to those services. A key component of outreach is helping those in need of

outreach services at the locations where people generally don‟t go. In addition to delivering

services, outreach has an educational role, raising the awareness of existing services. So did

we do, covered the underprivileged schools and rehab and filled in the gap by volunteering.

Our topic was “GROUP COHESIVENESS”, we taught the students how to work in a group

and help each other in every aspect of life. We went to a girl‟s school where we taught them

about the difference between good touch and bad touch. In rehab we made them do SWOT

ANALYSIS and how it helps a person know his strength, weakness, opportunities and threats

which is very important for them.

All together it was a great learning experience for all of us,even we came to know the

importance and usefulness of working in a group. We got an idea as to how we can connect

to the community and help them out in several ways. This outreach was an effective way of

reaching people and even knowing our capabilities as how we can convince people and get

them in the right direction. The outreach was designed and implemented to reduce symptoms

and restore or improve functioning of a person struggling with addiction issues and in schools

to work in group. So, overall it was a great learning experience for all of us.

The target group for Group „A‟ was underprivileged school children; so the place that was

most suitable for this was Government schools. The topic chosen was personality

development. After the places were contacted and finalised, the groups went to Government

schools and blind school. Before the activities on personality development were started, it

was made sure that the target group, i.e., Government school children were given our

introductions and then vice versa. After that two ice breaker activities were conducted to

increase the familiarity and comfort level between all the people.

The first ice breaker activity was to make every child stand up and introduce him or

herself with their name and then introduce their partner and tell a quality they like in

themselves and their partner. The next ice breaker was to tell all the children why were there

and where we were from. The third activity was to ask all the children what the words

“personality” and “development” meant to them. The fourth activity was Chinese whispers,

wherein, all the children were made to first play the game. At the end of the activity when

they all realised each one heard something different; we talked about the dangers of rumours

and why we should not believe them. The fifth activity was where the children were asked

what they want to become when they grow up and all of them were allowed to tell and also

why they wanted to become that. The final activity was talent recognition; where we asked all

the children if any of them had any talents and they want to exhibit them in front of the class,

for example, dancing, singing, etc. At the end of the activity; we wished all the children “all

the best” for their future and asked them if they like the session that day, took the feedback

and would end the session.

After the ice breaker session there were many activities conducted on memory building

which include activities on serial processing, touch processing and story building activities.

Other modules for the children were about personal hygiene, awareness on drug abuse, stress

management and motivation to study.

After the little art session, they also had a small activity for the children in the class wherein

Outreach Activities by MSc Applied Psychology Outreach is an activity of providing services to any populations who might not otherwise

have access to those services. A key component of outreach is helping those in need of

outreach services at the locations where people generally don‟t go. In addition to delivering

services, outreach has an educational role, raising the awareness of existing services.

The students of MSc. Applied Psychology-I along with their incharge faculty Ms. Hilda

,visited the underprivileged schools and rehab and filled in the gap by volunteering. Their

topic was “GROUP COHESIVENESS”, the students taught them how to work in a group and

help each other in every aspect of life. Also they went to a girl‟s school where they taught

them about the difference between good touch and bad touch. In rehab they made them do

SWOT ANALYSIS and how it helps a person know his strength, weakness, opportunities

and threats which is very important for them.

All together it was a great learning experience for all the students, eventhey came to know the

importance and usefulness of working in a group. They got an idea as to how one can connect

to the community and help them out in several ways. This outreach programme was an

effective way of reaching people and even knowing theirown capabilities as how one can

convince people and get them in the right direction. The outreach was designed and

implemented to reduce symptoms and restore or improve functioning of a person struggling

with addiction issues and in schools to work in group. So, overall it was a great learning

experience for all of them.

The target group for Group „A‟ was underprivileged school children; so the place that was

most suitable for this was Government schools. The topic chosen was personality

development. After the places were contacted and finalised, the groups went to Government

schools and blind school. Before the activities on personality development were started, it

was made sure that the target group, i.e., Government school children were given

introductions and then vice versa.

At the end of the activity when

they all realised each one heard something different; the students talked about the dangers of

rumours and why we should not believe them. The fifth activity was where the children were

asked what they want to become when they grow up and all of them were allowed to tell and

also why they wanted to become that. The final activity was talent recognition; where they

asked all the children if any of them had any talents and they want to exhibit them in front of

the class, for example, dancing, singing, etc. At the end of the activity; students wished all the

children “all the best” for their future and asked them if they like the session that day, took

the feedback and would end the session.

After the ice breaker session there were many activities conducted on memory building

which include activities on serial processing, touch processing and story building activities.

Other modules for the children were about personal hygiene, awareness on drug abuse, stress

management and motivation to study.

is a valuable asset for their future endeavours.

Outreach Activities by MSc Mathematics

“Knowledge Is Power” A quote we have heard the entire life but we think the value of it is

understood when there are people whose crescendo of knowledge is not as wide as

ours, whose access to knowledge is not as broader or wider like ours.

And that‟s the reason we personally feel giving knowledge is the best blessing we have

received through this Outreach Programme.

To give their support and participation ,the students of MSc Mathematics-I along with the

incharge faculty Ms. Rekha Jaichander enthusiastically went to St. Andrews High School

located at Somajiguda. A total of 24 students assisted the teachers and guided the children

from Lkg to 10th

grade from 15th to 21stNovember during their regular timings of the school

which was from 8:30amto 4:00pm.

A pair of two were assigned for each class to teach different subjects and to have a healthy

interaction which required complete participation of every student. The children were quite

cooperative and showed great interest in what was being taught.

We feel the primary motto of education in school not only concentrates on academic

excellence but also on all round development which gives the child a stronger foundation to

excel in various other fields.

On the final day, the school management arranged a short program where the children

entertained the students of MSc Mathematics-I with dance and other activities. The director of

the school interacted with them and spoke words of inspiration and encouragement saying

that this gesture of our students will help and affect the children in the long run.

Outreach Activities by MSc Microbiology

L V Prasad eye institute contains a fully equipped rehabilitation center where visually

impaired people are trained to improve the quality of their life. They organize certain courses

such as computer skills, technological skills and also help the visually impaired students

complete their education in any field of their choice.

The students of M.Sc Microbiology-I along with their incharge faculty Dr. B Aruna were part

of one such program organized for the visually challenged persons to complete their

education.

The program was a 30 hour program, with each session lasting for 2 hours. During these

sessions, the students were asked to read out loud the text books provided to them by the

institute and their voices were recorded to provide the oral material for the visually impaired

students. Alternatively, they were asked to type textbook material provided by the institute

into a word document. The institute has programmes to convert these documents into Braille

which is also used as material for the education programmes. All the students completed

equal sessions of recording as well as editing.

Overall the program was highly successful as each student got to interact with the people who

work with the visually impaired on a day to day basis. They got to learn a lot of new things

and the feeling of reaching out to people gave them immense satisfaction. Each student is

monitored by program in charge Mr.Vinay, who would evaluate them based on their

punctuality and performance. The students will submit their report at the end of their field

work and will be evaluated internally.

On the third and last day of their school visit on 20th

December 2017, the students performed

live experiments and demonstrations for the students related to the theory that they had earlier

taught. This helped the children understand their concepts better and see how the practical is

interconnected with the theoretical knowledge they learn.

As a contribution, the students donated a microscope to the school that would surely help the

children in their studies. Students also gifted the children chocolates as a token of affection

towards their very first students.

The visit gave the Francis girls to reach out to the society and do their part to educate young

India. It also mutually benefitted the school children, where they gained exposure to new and

bright ideas and helped empower themselves by knowing the different opportunities available

in the future.

On 10th

January 2018, the students visited an orphanage which also served as an old age

home to many. There they spent time with senior citizens with whom they shared stories.

They also enjoyed themselves with the little children and played various fun games to lighten

the monotonous mode of the shelter.

The social outreach programme has most definitely helped shape the girls of Francis. It has

given them the golden chance to look beyond their education and personal life and to help the

society in whatever way they can. They will surely remember this wonderful experience

throughout their lives.
