Dear Friends,

It won’t be long now until our garden begins to produce this seasons fruits! Green leafy varieties, beets,

radishes, and carrots will again be first. Summer squashes, eggplant, cucumbers, tomatoes and herbs will

begin to fill in the full complement of tastes, smells, and colors. As God said, “‘Let the earth put forth

vegetation: plants yielding seed, and fruit trees of every kind on earth that bear fruit with the seed in it.’

And it was so.” Genesis 1:11

Our “Dig It! Garden Camp for Growing, Cooking,” and Caring” will allow us to share the truth of God’s

abundance with children. We are inviting kids to join in summer fun and activities around growing and

learning about food we grow in our gardens. Kids will enjoy crafts, have fun in hands-on garden

exploration and care, and create meals as they learn about a garden’s impact on community.

Dig It! for 2017 will center on Climate Change and how our individual choices and life in community

are related to climate change. Together we will find meaning for us as we relate ‘who we are’ with ‘our

purpose and place in God’s world’.

Looking forward to experiencing “Christ in Community” through our gardens!

Our mission focus for the month of May will be the Food Pantry. Donations of nonperishable foods may be brought to church any time and placed in the designated baskets. Items needed include canned fruit and veggies, soup, tuna, peanut butter, mac & cheese, crackers and pasta. If you would prefer to give a cash donation, please place it in the mission offering envelopes found in each pew. If you are interested in volunteering in the food pantry, see our Food Pantry Coordinator, Nancy Eberle.

May Mission

Our heartfelt love and sympathy to Donna

Longest and her family on the death of her

husband, Richard, on April 1st. Our

thoughts and prayers are with all of you.

We also remember the family of Ancle

Cavins, our friend and neighbor who

passed away on April 20. Ancle was a

good friend to our church, helping in the

gardens, bringing snacks to the office and

cleaning up around the church. We will

truly miss him.

REPORT Thank you to all those who contributed to the Homeward Bound Walk to benefit Family Promise. It was a beautiful day for a walk, sunny and warm. Roger and Kathy McClannen walked representing Brown Street UMC. We are happy to report that we raised $378.02. Family Promise set a goal of $12,000. The final accounting isn’t in yet, but they think they surpassed that goal. They also raised more money than any other agency involved in the walk! Thanks for your support.

Happy Mother’s Day

Enclosed in this month’s newsletter you will find a brochure for Dig It! Garden Camp for Growing, Cooking, and Caring. We are excited to be able to offer this opportunity for the children of our neighborhood and city. If you know of a child who would be interested in attending, please pass this brochure on to them. We are also looking for volunteers to help with camp. You don’t need to be there for all three weeks, but we would like a one week commitment. Pastor Barb and her committee have worked hard to plan 3 weeks of fun activities and experiences for the children. Let’s help them make it a great success!

Please plan to join us on Saturday, May 13th at 9:00 am for our annual garden planting day. There will be some soil moving, planting, mulching, weeding, watering and general clean up to be done– jobs for every age and ability. Come and help us as we get ready for another great season of gardening at the Brown Street UMC Share Gardens!
