Introduction :
Dhaka is one of the most populatedcities in the world and the largestcity in Bangladesh. It is the capitalof Bangladesh, where (DCC) isthe self-governing corporation andorganization having responsibility ofmanaging many functions of Dhaka City. The City corporation area is dividedinto several wards. Each ward has anelected ward commissioner. From 1990it functioned as Dhaka CityCorporation, but in 2011 theCorporation was divided into twodifferent city corporations namedDhaka North and Dhaka South CityCorporation. The administrativedemarcation and renumbering of wardsinto new wards under two citycorporations has given rise to acomplexity about ward numbers.
Dhaka municipality was established in1863, it was renamed as Dhaka CityCorporation in 1990. Dhaka CityCorporation has grown to a largemetropolis with a population nownearing over one crore or more(approximately 12 million). TillNovember 2011 the DCC had 10 zonesand 90 wards as small administrativeunits. The most discussed issue of row
is the split of Dhaka City Corporationby the Local Government as DhakaSouth City Corporation (DSCC) andDhaka North City Corporation (DNCC).
Dissolution, changes of city zoningand wards number:
Government, on 29th November 2011dissolved the Dhaka City Corporationby the Local Government (CityCorporation) Amendment Bill 2011passed by the Parliament of Bangladeshafter being placed in the Parliamenton November 23. According to the bill"the city corporation will be splitinto two corporations, North andSouth, with the southern wing holdingmore territory than the north. Eachcorporation will be a self-governingentity, thus will have the twomayors". Though still now theadministrative head are in control ofthe two city corporations as theelection is yet to be held.Authorities have changed the zoningand the number of wards of the DhakaSouth and the Dhaka North CityCorporation. The LGRD andCooperatives Ministry on December 13,2011 published a gazette effectingchanges in zones and renumbering ofcity corporation wards. The Previous
zone and ward numbers are shown withthe renumbered zone and ward in table1.1 and table 1.2.
