Section B: ACADEMIC TEACHING EXPERIENCE
I have 18 years of teaching record at academic institutions including serving as lecturer and senior lecturer in University of Malaya (the first dental school in Malaysia) for eleven years. I joined International Medical University in January 2008 and was the pioneer batch of academic staff with the first intake of students in February 2008. I was the Director of Oral Health Centre and currently the Associate Dean of Clinical Oral Sciences of School of Dentistry.
1. Development of undergraduate/postgraduate academic programme
Joined IMU in 2008 as an Associate Professor and was appointed the coordinator for Dental Skills Laboratory and was the module coordinator for Dental Practice 1.
Significant Contributions
I was one of the four lecturers as the pioneer batch of academic staff to execute the inaugural Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) programme at IMU in February
2008. As the pioneer batch of staff, I was heavily involved in the designing and implementation of the BDS programme in IMU. I was also actively involved in the designing and supervision of renovation work of the facilities to support pre-clinical (Dental Skills Laboratory) and clinical (Oral Health Centre) teaching and learning activities for the dental students. I was heavily involved in all the Malaysian Qualification Agency (MQA) surveillance monitor visits which led to full accreditation of the BDS programme.
Key achievements
Bachelor of Dental Surgery
• I take responsibility to develop the academic materials and implement the
teaching and learning activities to ensure that they comply with nationally accepted accreditation standards and requirements of Malaysian Qualification Agency (MQA).
• Developed study guides for Dental Practice 1 and Restorative Dentistry. The study guides were based on an outcome-based curriculum and designed with emphasis on IMU core values and learning outcomes.
• Module coordinator for Dental Practice 1 (Semesters 2-5) and Restorative Dentistry (Semesters 6-10). As these are all new modules, Dental Practice 1 is a very comprehensive module as it integrate all clinical dentistry subjects i.e. conservative dentistry, endodontics, periodontics, children’s dentistry, orthodontics and oral surgery at basic levels. Restorative Dentistry encompasses fixed and removable prosthodontics, endodontics, periodontics and implantology.
• Heavily involved in the teaching of Dental Practice 1 and Restorative Dentsitry i.e lectures, seminars, problem based learning, case based learning and clinical supervision
• Coordinated major Professional Examinations for pioneer batch and second batch of dental students (DT1/08- End of Semester (EOS) Sem 4, 7, 9 & 10; DT1/09- EOS Sem 4)
• Introduced Personal and Professional Assessment (PPA) to inculcate professionalism and ethics amongst the dental students.
• Develop Assessment Map for the dental programme to provide comprehensive view for the assessment system in place for accreditation visit by Malaysian Qualification Agency (MQA)
• Have taken the initiative to introduce Peer-Assisted Learning in the School of Dentistry- this has been incorporated for (i) seminar sessions (for Dental Material Sciences between Sem 3 and Sem7; Sem 4 and Sem 8- this was witnessed by the Deans from the partner schools during 2013 AC Meeting) and also (ii) for clinical supervision session (between the Semester 5 and Semester 9 students- this initiative has been approved by Senate Board and was one of the four finalists for the Ron Harden Innovation in Medical Education (RHIME) Award).
• Developed inaugural promotional brochure in collaboration with Marketing Services for Oral Health Centre to attract patients for students’ practical sessions
• Conducted 2 Standardization Workshops (2010 and 2011) to standardize lecturer’s evaluation of practical work by students in the Dental Skills Laboratory
• Conducted Question Setting Workshop and Assessment Workshop (2011 and 2012) to improve the quality of examination questions.
• Conducted Dental Forum (Council member from Malaysian Dental Council, President of Malaysian Dental Association, Chairman of Patient Complaint Bureau, prominent dental practitioners were invited) to promote ethics and professionalism amongst dental students
• Have taken the lead role as group leader in two PBL designing workshops at IMU. Each workshop has successfully design 12 PBLs to promote and support students’ active learning.
• Involved in the development of “Total Environmental Management of the Oral Cavity” component of IMU Wellness and Health Promotion Module for first year medical and dental students. I was invited to present a paper on
this Module at the 2nd Minimal Intervention Dentistry Working Group meeting in Bangkok, Thailand in December 2009
• Develop Assessment Blueprint for dental programme
• Develop guide for Progressive Clinical Competencies for dental students
• Involved in the development of “Total Environmental Management of the Oral Cavity” component of IMU Wellness and Health Promotion Module for first year medical and dental students. I was invited to present a paper on
this Module at the 2nd Minimal Intervention Dentistry Working Group meeting in Bangkok, Thailand in December 2009
• Internal Examiner for DT1/08- EOS Sem 2, 4, 7, 9, 10; DT1/09- EOS Sem 2, 4, 7; DT 1/10- Sem 2, 4, 7; DT 1/11- EOS Sem 2, 4.
Postgraduate Diploma in Implant Dentistry I am involving in developing Postgraduate Diploma in Implant Dentistry for general dental practitioners who are keen to acquire skills and experience in implant dentistry.
Prior to joining IMU, I was holding position of lecturer (1997- 2004) and senior lecturer (2005-2007) in University of Malaya. I have played key role in reviewing and implementation of teaching (lectures, seminars, problem based learning and clinical supervision) of Conservative Dentistry, Dental Materials, Endodontics and Prosthodontics at University of Malaya.
Problem based learning was first introduced in University Malaya in 1998 and I was appointed the Coordinator for Problem-based Learning (PBL) and was instrumental in introducing PBL in the undergraduate and postgraduate course; involving in trigger writing and also workshops for writing triggers for the Faculty. I was also involved in the revision of the Bachelor of Dentistry curriculum (change from traditional departmentalized teaching to integrated teaching and learning).
At postgraduate level, I have also assisted in the designing and delivery of two master programmes (i) Master in Restorative Dentistry, (ii) Master in Implant Dentistry in University Malaya. I was involved in the teaching of both programmes. I was one of the course instructors for the Certificate in Implantology course (joint programme between University of Frankfurt and University of Malaya).
2. Teaching-learning Award
Outstanding Lecturer Award- University of Malaya, 2007 Lecturer evaluation score- International Medical University, 2010-8/10; 2011-8/10; 2012-9/10
With my years of teaching experience, I always believe that students
should have a sound foundation of knowledge and able to apply this
knowledge in the clinical practice. I always try to relate the basic knowledge to
clinical situations to help students see the relevance and promote evidence-
based practice to provide the best care for the patients. I use simple analogies
to explain more complex concepts to help students understand the whole
picture. I am a strong advocate of student-centered learning and critical
thinking. In order for students to maximize their learning during the clinical
sessions, I always made extra effort to conduct reflection session at the
end of clinical session to give direct feedback to students with regards to the
cases that they have treated and also students’ performance. Innovative
technologies have been used in teaching and learning activities eg. video
recording for practical work, website delivery of materials and i-lectures. I also
provide close guidance and support to my mentees and students under my
supervision for projects, research and clinical training. Below are some comments from the students in the lecturer’s evaluation:
DT1/09 Sem 7- Very helpful in clinic. Whenever she supervises me, I learn a lot from her technique, on how she explains to patient and I really like the fact that she always emphasises on minimal intervention.
DT1/10 Sem5- She is a really nice and patient lecturer. She is enthusiatic about teaching and her passion for the students is incredible. Excellent teaching when she helps students during the clinic. She guides students step by step. Keep it up!
DT1/11 Sem 3- One of the most favourite lecturer in IMU. She is considerate, kind, patient, knowledgable, pretty. She really spend time in looking into our prblems, find a way to solve it. She gives clear instructions. She has good virtues that Almost what a great teacher has. IMU totally IN NEED more lecturers LIKE PROF SEOW!
3. Contribution in developing ICT based on teaching/learning modules
As the Director of Oral Health Centre, I have developed the E- Student Assessment (Dental Assessment Portal) with IT department. This electronic portal records all students’ clinical work and able to generate a summary report for all the types of clinical work performed by every student. This can assist in the generation of student portfolio.
I have also worked closely with IT department in the designing and implementation of the E-Patient Management System (OpenDent) from a complimentary open source. This patient management captures the electronic database and clinical records for patients. This enables a paperless environment in the Oral Health Centre.
Besides the two key initiatives above, I have also recorded most practical projects under my care to enable continuous viewing and learning by students.
IMU Innovation Grant- Development and evaluation of electronic video game as part of the Dental Practice module for second year dental students. Project leader- Dr. Hanan Omar, Team member- Prof. Toh Chooi Gait, Prof Dr. Seow Liang Lin, Dr. Umer Daood, Dr. Saad Khan
