As the school year comes to a close, many students are antici-pating the glory that is summer. Although the end of the school year may be a hectic time full of stressing over finals and for the seniors, graduation, it’s al-ways comforting to know that care-free living is just around the corner. The summer time is a great opportunity for students to get away from the school en-vironment and relax their minds and focus on enjoying the swel-tering heat! Some students will travel to their favorite beaches, go to amusement parks, go on a camping trip, or just hang around with friends. No matter what the person is doing, it’s surely more exciting than sit-ting in a classroom! There are so many intriguing activities the summer can hold, but the most important part is what you make of it yourself. This sum-mer will only be as exciting as you make it. Even though sum-mer only lasts for three months, if you make the most of it, the memories will last forever. So when school has finally ended at the end of May, and we say goodbye to our friends who are going to college, we must pre-pare ourselves for the coming year. Some of us will be visiting colleges ourselves, the reality of growing up hitting hard. Wheth-er you happen to be spending your summer days basking in the rays of sunshine on a sandy beach, the sound of seagulls above, or camping under the twilight sky, crickets chirping in the woods nearby, appreciate ev-ery second of it, because you’ll never get this summer back, so make it one to remember!

Cavenas Breaks Two School Records

Athletic standout, Tyler Cavenas, had an exciting track season. Com-peting in both the discus and shot put, Cavenas broke the school record in both events, with a discus distance of 149’9” at the District Meet and a cool 50’11” with the shot at the League Meet. He also placed first at the Pine Grove Invitational in both events, as well as first in discus at Districts. In the shot, Cavenas took the gold at the Tamaqua Invitational and Leagues and second at Districts. He ended the season with a trip to the State Meet, where he competed in both events. Tyler has been in contact with numerous universities and is leaning toward the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, where he would play football.

AwarenessEarth Day is a day meant to increase awareness and appreciation for the earth’s environment. Held on April 22, Earth Day is currently celebrated in more than 175 countries annually.Earth Day was founded in 1970 by Gaylord Nelson, a senator from Wisconsin. Nelson got the idea of Earth Day after he saw the effects of a large oil spill in 1969 in Santa Barbara, California. Nelson thought the world would be a healthier place to live if more people knew about protecting the earth. On April 22, 1970, 20 million Americans participated in the first Earth Day. These people protested things that would harm the earth such as air and water pol-lution.Today, Earth Day is celebrated in many ways. People plant trees or pick up trash. Celebrating Earth Day is doing anything that benefits the environment. To cel-ebrate Earth Day, you can recycle or reuse objects. You can also ride your bike places instead of driv-ing.

As many of you know, SHINE is an after-school program in our elementary school, which offers academic, social, and family support to members of our student body. This program is funded through federal money, that is passed down to the Pennsylvania Department of Education, and then to Lehigh Carbon Community, which runs the pro-gram. Over the past nine years the program has run suc-cessfully in Schuylkill and Carbon County schools with no gaps in service. Unfortunately, SHINE does not have the funding to continue the kindergarten-fourth grade part of the program after June 30, 2013. Our SHINE staff is aggressively searching for funding. We can use your help. Please write a letter addressed to “Elected Officials” and hand it in to one of us. We will be mailing the letters from you, our students, and their parents in bulk in the near future. Some activities that we complete at SHINE include: homework help, test preparation, remediation ac-tivities, enrichment activities (including STEM), physical activities, social skills, hygiene education, and a hot meal. We also offer a monthly family dinner, summer home vis-its, GED and ESL courses, and summer camp, all free of cost. Thank you for taking this time to offer your support to our SHINE students.Megan Tomko and Audra Kufro
