CHAPTER-I

Introduction

Computing is a very fast moving science and technology in the modern world in the same way as New London

Travels (NLT) in growing and expanding their business in London. Currently, they have ten employees in

different specific roles such as receiving calls, processing bookings and running administration. This proposition

is going to anticipate the concept of sharing and working together in a dynamic team, with a futuristic vision that

will be more proficient in this challenging and quick changing field.

Scenario and Scopes

After observing, investigating and analysing the existing computers, equipment, operating systems, software,

available resources and also surveying their workplace environment, job pattern, work-load, client’s

requirements, customer services, internal activities, management, account and administration; some similarities

and sharing scope has been found in NLT’s office services. It gives an opportunity to upgrade RAM, rearranging

and reuse of their three existing third generation quad-core systems in a new look for three booking officers.

Rest of the required computers have been divided in two categories after a logical and careful considering of

their data, information, security system, multitasking work pattern and uses. Most advance upgraded fourth

generation multi-core processing systems have been selected for two administrators and five up-to-date multi-

tasking computer systems have been prepared for one telephone operator and four call desk assistants to

perform their jobs efficiently and on time.

In this current competitive market, it is very important to share the information, data and files among the

working team members for the success of business; also sharing printers, copier, fax, scanners and other

ancillary facilities can make an important impact to keep the office running cost in a considerable level.

Obviously, a consideration of network system for this proposed computer facilities can make a difference in

NLT’s performance and achievement. After careful consideration, analysis and evaluation of their individual role,

responsibility, requirements, security and data protection policy, all the systems’ specifications have been

classified in three categories.

Required Components and Devices

The selection process of computer hardware and peripheral accessories have not been compromised with

quality, integrity, function, purpose and activity. Multi-core fourth generation processor with highly configured

cache memory, high-speed RAM, fast-strong-durable hard drive, synchronised motherboard, excellent

protection and security system can do more convenient, fast and user friendly for administration, reservation

and booking process at NLT.

Testing Strategies

The variation of computer components and architecture are so vast and advanced that they became very

difficult to identify and compare the efficiency and performance of different components and systems simply by

observing at their specifications. Consequently, tests have been established to identify measure, compare and

evaluate different computer systems.

Before determining the approaches of testing it is obvious to consider the practicality and feasibility of three

potential strategies such as top down testing, bottom up testing and thread testing.

Testing Approach

‘Black Box Testing’ and ‘White Box Testing’ these two different methodologies are commonly used in software

examination, engineering principles and hardware efficiency and performance assessment.

Black Box Testing

‘Black Box Testing’ indicates that the system, the component, the program, the assembly - whatever is observed

as a 'box‘ where it has some specific inputs, and it has some expected outputs in certain criteria. In this case we

don't need to know what is inside it we just treat it as a black box with participations and productivities or

defined inputs and defined outputs. It simply pays attention to what goes in and what comes out as collection of

predictable behaviours and well-defined parameters; for example it known as behavioural or functional testing.

White Box Testing

‘White Box Testing’ on the other hand, permits us to identify what is inside the box also allows to correct the

testing procedures to perhaps garb the matters of the box, in some way or it permits us to specify precise tests

using exact data because it provides something specific and detailed about the performance of the system. It

aims as testing each aspect of program logic. Sometimes it is known as structural testing.

Selection of Testing

As it has been mentioned for ‘white box testing’ some procedures, specific guideline and steps such as create

test plan, check the internal subroutines, outline the application block, trial loop and conditional statements and

perform security testing.

However, considering the practical situation in this regard ‘black box testing’ has been chosen to ensure the

important specifications and characteristics and to evaluate the performance of the proposed system.

CHAPTER-II

Operating Systems

An operating system, or OS, is an integrated set of software or programs that links, controls and communicates

with the hardware or resources and separates applications or programs from the hardware. It also access

software layers for allowing other applications or programs to install and run for aiming to produce desired

results. Similarly, it provides basic functionality for processors, memories, input/output devices and

communication devices and its graphical user interface or GUI, that includes most well-known basic commands

of the desktop and the ability to manage file-folders, copy, paste, move, delete, rename, recover or undelete

and many more operational features (TechTerms, 2012).

Unprecedented growth development use of computing throughout the past several decades and the sky-high

expectation of users have mobilised huge developments, diversity, controls and changes in design and structure

of operating systems.

In computer platforms, the kernel of the operating systems is a central component and crucial factor where it

acts as a bridge between programmes or applications and authentic data analysing processes that prepared at

the hardware levels; also communicates between software and hardware mechanisms. The kernel runs most of

the functional amenities in user space as an operative or server for achieving to increase the maintainability and

modularity of operating systems (TechTerms, 2012).

Features and Requirements of Different OS

Android, Solaris, FreeBSD, NetBSD, OpenBSD, Linux, Mac OS X, Microsoft Windows, UNIX, IBM VM/370, Google

Chrome OS and many more standard bespoke customised professional and embedded operating systems are

available in current computing world. Although each of them is different but all contribute support and provide

as a computer's essential and fundamental user interfaces, it significantly affects how users interact with the

devices. Therefore, many users prefer to use a specific operating system. However, in the selection process of

the operating system it has been carefully considered and evaluated certain properties, as efficiency, usability,

robustness, portability, scalability, interactivity, extensibility, protection and security of the computer platforms.

Windows:

On 20 November 1985 Microsoft Corporation ships Windows 1.0 the first version of their new operating system

rather than typing ‘MS-DOS’ commands, users just move a mouse to point and click their way through screens,

or “windows.” Bill Gates expressed, “It is unique software designed for the serious PC user.”(Microsoft, 2014)

After a long continual journey of vigorous research and development ‘Windows 8’ brings a fast fluid and

extreme modern computing experience with most advance features of shearing and working together in both

standard and ‘touchscreen’ interfaces that help professionals to stay connected to their colleagues and clients

from anywhere anytime. Windows 8.1 introduces new manageability, mobility, security and experience of

networking capabilities–with a goal of offering most user friendly, easy accessible powerful operating system for

versatile modern business and personal computer platforms (Microsoft, 2014).

Advantages and Features of Windows 8.1

Windows 8.1 was designed to power an exciting and affordable new generation of tablets and desktop

computers with most familiar desktop folders and icons.

Defender and Smart-Screen guard the system against viruses, spyware and malicious software in real time.

Bing smart search gives clean results and graphic views.

It lets us work the way we want, and flow smoothly from one thing to another.

SkyDrive, Microsoft account, Internet Explorer 11, video, voice, instant messaging and great apps bring more

extensibility and robustness (Microsoft, 2013).

Mac OS:

On January 24, 1984, Apple Computer Inc. introduced the Macintosh personal computers which came bundled

with what was later renamed to Mac OS, but then known simply as the ‘System Software’. The Macintosh is

Advantages and Features of OS X 10.9 Mavericks

OS X Mavericks was launched on October 2013 In OS with some powerful time saving and excellent energy

efficient superiority such as its ‘Timer Coalescing’ groups operate together in low-level and creates in tiny

periods of idle time that allows to reduce up to 72 percent CPUs energy by entering a low-power state more

often.

Playing music, downloading a file, or checking email, for example - App Nap conserves valuable battery life by

slowing the app down and decreases CPU energy up to 23 percent.

It automatically compresses data from inactive apps, making more memory available; this compressing and

decompressing happens almost instantly and make it extra fast.

‘Timer coalescing’ which enhances energy efficiency by

subsiding 70 percent CPU usages.

When approaching maximum memory

capacity, ‘Compressed Memory’ automatically

Compatible with only Mac models such as iMac 2007 or newer, MacBook-2009, MacBook-Pro-2007, MacBook

small piece of a Linux distribution. It is the software on a computer that enables applications and the computer

App Nap which sleeps apps that is

Selection of Operating System

No doubt Windows 8.1, OS X Mavericks and Linux 5 all are excellent as an operating system for desktop

platforms but the components are not compatible with OS X Mavericks. On the other hand, most users prefer to

use a specific, familiar and well-known operating system. As we know more than ninety percent of global

computing population are based on Microsoft Windows operating system personal uses, even though Linux is

compatible free open source operating system.

However, considering other flexibilities and familiarities Windows 8.1 has been chosen to facilitated latest

networking working features to establish a ‘WORKGROUP’ category that will help them to bring more dynamism

at NLT’s services through better communication, flexible or common uses of facilities and file or data share.

CHAPTER-III

Test Plan for Major Components

To ensure the quality and properties of provided components and considering the limitations of testing

resources and practicality, a test plan has produced under the methodology of black box or functional testing.

Setup the flags and sockets with power supply and the monitor. Turn on the ‘Systems and’ speakers. Follow the

onscreen commands and instructions; complete the opening windows and wait until the desktop appears. Then

follow the steps through figure by figure as mentioned below.

Guidelines for Users

All member staffs of New London Travels must comply with the computing and network resource policy when

using their system at workplace that will help them for have a greater efficiency and better protection.

Choose a password that is at least six

characters long and a combination of upper or

lower case letters, numbers or punctuation.

Do not write it down and change it on a regular

basis.

Don’t leave the systems for any break without

‘Log off’ or ‘Lock’

Always try to set a recommended power plan

and energy saving mode.

For better performance turn off un-used

programmes or application and try to optimise

the use of memory.

Run ‘Disk Cleanup’ on regular basis and set a

schedule of ‘Defragmentation’ to maximise the

use of Hard Drives.

CHAPTER–IV

Security Strategy for Systems

Understanding

the operating system is the

first and vital step for any

effective security policy.

‘Windows Firewall’ must be

turned ‘ON’

‘Windows Update’ always

keeps ‘ON’

Check the messages in

‘Action Center’ while flag up

at status bar and any

warning or red signal should

be solved earnestly.

System Security is an extreme essential and vital strategy for any organisation and their customers’ confidence;

without any policy of trusted system and data protection, clients’ faith cannot be achieved, which is inevitably

important for a growing and expanding business as New London Travels.

To identify the potential targets and security threat, it

is very important to be familiar and apprehend with

the terminologies such as Hackers, Scammers,

Crackers, Viruses, malware, Nightmare,

spyware, Ransomware, Scareware etc.

There is no compromise to install and update an internet security and antivirus for the systems but before

download and setup, it is always recommended to check the compatibility with Windows on their link:

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows/antivirus-partners#AVtabs=win7.

In the same way for protection purpose it is also essential to understand the definition of Firewall,

Antivirus, Port Scanners, Universal Port Scanners and Internet-Security etc. Also

recognise the correct and trusted antivirus because hackers occasionally use replica antivirus programs to

hoax users into installing viruses or malware on their computers. (Microsoft, 2013)

Health and Safety

The purposes and motivations of the health & safety advices, guidelines and procedures are for precautions,

protections and safeguard in the workstations for the employees; in addition, other personnel in the building or

vicinity, also equipment and premises as well.

To avoid muscular and skeletal strain it is

very important the position of equipment,

adjustable chair, correctly oriented heads

and proper support for hands, arms, backs,

feet, forelegs and thighs.

Different input devices and keyboard must

be suitable in configuration and size and

configured to reduce strain of fingers, hands,

arms and shoulders.

Repetitive strain injuries:

Comfortable and relaxed vision should be

ensured by adjusting monitor position and

display screen operator’s head and spinal

code must be strait.

Brightness, contrast, view angle,

surrounding of the room’s lighting and

surface colour should be prescribed by

designers and professionals.

Make sure each and every component meets

the prescribed standard and safety

guidelines before assemble and during

assemble confirm that all the connections

are in right place and not loosely attached

firmly finished without any trailing wires.

Conclusion

It was significant to find out the possible optimisation and upgrading option of the existing resources that aided

as a saving in budget and a breakthrough to procure the advanced components, powerful operating system,

dynamic networking features, thriving communication facilities, most reliable backup and security protection

which could coup with the near future in this fast moving computing world. The scope to add a server in the

system will be simplified and centralized the services which are very important for long run sustainability in the

business of New London Travels.
