Dear Friend,
As we navigated another year of the pandemic, we continued
to grow and change as an agency to meet the needs of our
community.
One of our biggest areas of growth was in our social services
offerings. This year, we consolidated all of our social services pro-
grams under the umbrella of JCC Connections, helping anyone
in need access crucial services. We know that people looking for
help often need more than one service and don’t know how to
access it easily. Our one-stop-shop method helps link people to
community resources, benefits, legal and financial counseling,
our Kosher Food Pantry, and so much more.
Our newest department within JCC Connections is Career
Connections, which launched in the fall. The goal of Career Con-
nections is to look at the career seeker as a whole person. The
program allows those looking for career assistance to access the
training they need to take their career to the next level, while also
helping them overcome any barriers they may have to finding
success in their careers. Whether that’s learning soft skills or
finding health insurance, our holistic approach helps meet a wide variety of needs.
As you read through this report, you’ll learn more about these new programs,
as well as the other work we’re doing to have a positive effect in our community.
You’ll also see the impact of our donors, who have stuck with us through these
turbulent times. Thanks to their generosity, the JCC will continue to serve the
community for many years to come.
The JCC has been an important part of Staten Island for over 90 years, and we
will continue to be there for our community going forward. Together, our agency
will grow to be stronger into the future.
Sincerely,
Susan Sappin Orit LenderBoard President Chief Executive Officer

Children & Family
• Early Childhood Education – We provide Daycare, 3-K For All, and Pre-K For
All for young children, available at four sites located throughout the Island.
• First Foot Forward – Our preschool program is dedicated to assisting children
2.6 to 5 years old with developmental needs.
• Explorers After School Program – Our after school program for elementary
and middle school students aims to educate the whole child through various
kinds of activities that stimulate the mind, body, and spirit. Children receive
homework help from DOE teachers, participate in sports and music classes,
and do mindfulness activities. We also have an inclusion program for children
with disabilities.
All of the following educational programs are funded by the NYC Department. of
Youth and Community Development.
• COMPASS and COMPASS Explore Programs – The JCC COMPASS program
at P.S. 65 provides after school programming for elementary school aged
children in the North Shore area. The program complements the school day by
offering academics, socialization, recreation, and the arts. COMPASS Explore
is an educational theatre program intended to help
children build self-esteem.
Our programs offer children and their families a broad range of activities that provide education, enrichment, and fun!
6
• Beacon Program – The JCC Beacon program serves the community on the
North Shore at I.S. 49 and on the South Shore at Tottenville High School. The
after school program for middle school and high school students offers a wide
variety of essential services to school age children as well as their parents and
the community.
• Cornerstone Program – Our three community centers are the Gerard Carter
Center, Cornerstone Todt Hill, and Cornerstone Richmond Terrace. These
centers provide year-round out-of-school time activities for youth ages 5-21 and
programs for adults 22+, including seniors. Our innovative community model
promotes a healthy lifestyle and social engagement for both youth and adults.
• Adolescent Literacy – The JCC offers an Adolescent Literacy program at I.S.
49. This innovative program uses a range of educational approaches to help
struggling 6th, 7th, and 8th graders develop their reading, writing, and oral
communication skills in an after school setting.
• SONYC Program – Our SONYC program at Eagle Academy for Young
Men serves as a pathway to success for youth in 6th, 7th, and 8th grades.
Structured like clubs, the model offers young people a choice in how they
spend their time, provides rigorous instruction in sports and arts, and requires
youth leadership through service.
OTHER YOUTH & TEEN PROGRAMS INCLUDE
• School’s Out – We host fun activities for kids in the Bernikow Building on days
they are off from school.
• iTeens – Our teen leadership group
focuses on planning social events and
organizing community service projects.
The group is guided by the Jewish
value of Tikkun Olam, healing our not
yet perfect world. Previous activities
include a sushi-making class, a gaga
tournament, and an escape the room
experience.
• HIV/AIDS Peer Education Group – Teens receive 60 plus hours of HIV/
AIDS education and performance skills
7
training and are empowered to become peer educators. The peer educators
perform before teen groups and educate attendees on basic HIV/AIDS
information and encourage them via roleplay to make healthy decisions
regarding risky behavior.
• Saturday Night Lights – A youth development and violence prevention
program that activates city spaces on Saturday nights to provide free high-
quality sports, fitness training and youth programs during the hours when
risk of youth involved violence is at its highest. The program is designed for
youth ages 11-18.
• Gun Violence Prevention – This new program, funded by the Governor’s
Office, supports positive youth development and provides positive
opportunities to youth at risk of gun violence.
• The Love Where You Live Campaign – This new
campaign will actively engage and involve residents to
lead cleaning, greening, and beautification campaigns in
their neighborhoods, as well as employ and engage local
artists to lead tailored cultural projects with resident
stewards to address anti-violence and conduct healing
work. This project will take place in the St. George and
Stapleton communities of Staten Island.
FAMILY PROGRAMSThe JCC is committed to providing programs that the whole family can enjoy together. Programs from this past year include our Fall Harvest Festival, Purim Live Game Show, art classes, family hikes, and more!

• JCC Day Camp – Our traditional day
camp gives children the opportunity
to connect with nature in a fun, social
environment. Camp includes swimming,
sports, arts and crafts, music, trips, and
more—all with an emphasis on universal
values like kindness, respect, and
inclusivity. Camp is open to all children,
including campers with special needs.
• Specialty Camps – This past summer, we
offered basketball, aquatics, gymnastics,
and soccer camps for young athletes. This
year, we also ran a specialty camp which
focused on performing arts in conjunction
with IlluminArt Productions.
• Marvin’s Camp for Children with Special Needs – We believe that everyone
should have the opportunity to create great
summer camp memories. Our Marvin’s
Camp for Children with Special Needs
and inclusion program are committed to
providing an educational, creative, social,
and safe environment for kids and teens
with special needs.
• Community-Based Camps – We offer
free camp programs at our Cornerstone,
Beacon, and COMPASS sites. These
programs continue the work we do at
these sites throughout the year, teaching
leadership skills and encouraging
academic success. Community-based
camps are funded by the NYC Department
of Youth and Community Development.
• Summer Rising – This new free
program provides academic support
and enrichment activities to children at
risk of falling behind in school due to the
pandemic. We served over 1,400 children
at nine sites, including P.S. 54 and P.S. 74.
The program is run through a partnership
with the Department of Education and
the Department of Youth & Community
Development.
• Year-round Camp Activities – Camp fun
doesn’t end in the summer! Our year-round
programs allow camp-like activities to
continue throughout the school year.
CampingFun is our tradition! For nearly 90 years, the JCC has been a leader in camping on Staten Island. We offer camps for children of all ages, interests, and abilities.
Sunrise Day CampSunrise Day Camp is the world’s first full
summer day camp for children with cancer
and their siblings, provided completely free of
charge. The Lucille & Jay Chazanoff Sunrise
Day Camp-Staten Island, operated by the JCC
of Staten Island, is the only day camp of its
kind in New York City. The camp serves over
140 children ages 3-16 from Staten Island,
Brooklyn, Manhattan, and nearby New Jersey.
Activities include sports, music, arts & crafts,
swimming, and other games.
This past summer, the camp reopened at
its new home on the grounds of Staten Island
Academy. Staten Island Academy boasts a
12-acre campus, offering ample space for
Sunrise campers to take part in activities
both indoors and outdoors. In addition to
previous summers’ activities, campers now
have access to two swimming pools and larger
field space. To ensure the health and safety of
all its campers, Sunrise has exclusive use of
their own program areas separate from Staten
Island Academy’s summer programs.
Sunrise operates with enhanced safety
protocols in place to minimize the potential of
any COVID-19 transmission at camp. A virtual
camp option is also available for those families
who may prefer or need distance-camping.
Recognizing the extraordinary financial
demands that a child’s chronic illness can
have on a family, Sunrise Day Camp and its
year-round and in-hospital programs, Sunrise
Sundays and Sunrise on Wheels, are provided
completely free of charge to campers’ families.
Sunrise Day Camp-Staten Island serves
children with cancer and their siblings a non-
sectarian basis. We are a proud member of the
Sunrise Association, whose mission is to bring
back the joys of childhood to children with
cancer and their siblings worldwide.
“It’s been a rough time for our family with the pandemic and my son’s cancer diagnosis. When an opportunity to go to Sunrise came along, it was a huge blessing for us. Finally, my son could be social with kids his own age, and his sister could join him.The kids loved every minute of it.”—Daniel, parent of a Sunrise camper

Serving Individuals with DisabilitiesTaking good care of our community members with disabilities is a priority at the
JCC. At the JCC, we believe that providing services to people with disabilities is
a core component to everything we do, and we have a long history of creating
programs to support their needs. Throughout our programs, the JCC offers
inclusion opportunities wherever possible for individuals with disabilities so they
can engage with their peers. We support the families of these individuals, too.
We are not alone in this endeavor—over 20 community partners offer their
support for our work, including UJA-Federation of New York, Butler Foundation,
the Staten Island Borough President’s office, NYC Council Members, and OPWDD
(Office for People with Developmental Disabilities). The JCC is proud to be a place
where people of all abilities can feel safe and included, and most importantly,
where they can learn and have fun.
• First Foot Forward – A preschool, supported by the NYC Dept. of Education
and Dept. of Health and Mental Hygiene, with speech, occupational, and
physical therapy services available. We operate First Foot Forward at three
different sites.
• Marvin’s Camp for Children with Special Needs – A summer program for
children and teens, with a small camper to counselor ratio, offering swimming,
sports, arts and crafts, special event days, and trips.
• Self Direction – Individuals with disabilities choose the mix of supports and
services that work best for themselves, such as JCC Membership, after school
programs, and summer camp.
• Inclusion Program – We offer inclusion opportunities in many of our
traditional programs, including sports, camp, and after school programs, so
that children and young adults with disabilities are able to take part in a wide
array of activities.
• After School Programs – Our after school program for children and teens
with ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorders) and related disabilities presents
an opportunity for them to socialize and engage with peers in an inclusive
environment. We also offer an inclusion program for our Explorers After
School Program.
• Day Habilitation Without Walls Program for Young Adults – This year-
round program offers social, recreational, and vocational activities at the
JCC as well as in collaboration with our partner organizations. Young adults
take part in activities such as delivering meals to the homebound, stocking
our food pantry, and gardening. We also take trips to various museums and
other cultural organizations. Our program maintains a strong emphasis
on community inclusion. We engage our participants in opportunities to
be healthy, social, and active members of the community with a maximum
degree of independence. Our ultimate goal for our participants is to establish
the groundwork for optimal success in achieving their highest potential
as they transition into adulthood. This year, we saw our Day Habilitation
program grow exponentially.
• Scouting – Our Girl Scout access troop serves children and young adults
with disabilities and their typical peers. This year, our Girl Scouts sold over
1,000 boxes of cookies to support the troop!

Arts & Culture
Dr. Esther Grushkin virtual programming, which includes performances, lectures, tours, a book club,
trips, and more!
• Lectures – Virtual and in-person lecture topics included the Bible, film, music,
art, theater, the Holocaust, and more. We were also joined by Rabbis and
Rebbetzins for a series of lectures focusing on Jewish topics. Some of our most
popular virtual programs have included several lecture series with British film
scholar Dr. Julia Wagner and tours of museums around the world led by an
experienced tour guide. We also offered programs that explored the topics of
feminism, Jews of Color, and inter-cultural traditions.
• Trips – After nearly two years, we were finally able to resume trips. We were
very excited to head back to Broadway shows in the late winter and spring.
• Concerts & Performances – We were thrilled to welcome people back in
person to celebrate Jewish Music Month with a performance by the Richmond
County Orchestra. We also hosted the National Yiddish Theatre Folksbiene for
a performance regarding the shared experiences of the African American and
Jewish communities.
• Israeli programs — The goal of our Israeli programs is to create a community
culture that acknowledges and embraces the understanding that Israel is a
complex country with a dynamic culture. Programming aims to foster dialogue
that promotes greater personal connections to Israel. With these personal
connections comes a greater appreciation of the nation’s complexities and a
deeper interest in the country’s history and people. Programs include lectures
from Ben-Gurion University of the Negev, an Israeli Film Festival, and weeklong
celebration of Yom Ha’Atzmaut (Israel Independence Day).
• Dorothy Delson Kuhn Music Institute – Our music school has been
training musicians of all ages and sharing the love of music with Staten
Islanders for over fifty years. We also offer music experiences, led by a
licensed music therapist, for participants with disabilities.
• Art @ the J – Our Murray Berman Art @ the J Gallery features an eclectic
mix of works by local artists.
Launch of Dr. Esther Grushkin Center for Arts + CultureThis year, we launched the Dr. Esther Grushkin Center for Arts + Culture. Dr.
Grushkin was a brilliant woman, a Jewish educator extraordinaire who dedicated
much of her career helping to bring adult Jewish learning and culture to the
Jewish community of Staten Island and beyond. With a passion and depth of
knowledge only matched by her ability to engage her students through
enthusiasm and humor, Dr. Grushkin generated a loyal following among youth
and adults alike as she shared her love for philosophy, the Bible, archaeology,
history, literature, art, music, drama, politics, and journalism.
Inspired by its namesake’s dedication and lifelong love of learning, the center
presents lectures, performances, and seminars led by world-class speakers and
entertainers across a variety of subject areas.
JCC board member and cultural arts committee member Jerome Grushkin
created the center in honor of his late wife. He said, “Esther dedicated her adult life
to education and was an extraordinary teacher and scholar. The Dr. Esther Grushkin
Center for Arts + Culture is dedicated to Esther’s memory to continue and expand
access to exceptional quality programming in adult Jewish learning, performing arts,
and global connections as well as connect with our participants in all ways possible.”
Since its launch in September, the center has already begun producing
engaging cultural programs for participants in Staten Island and beyond. We are
proud to honor Dr. Grushkin’s legacy with this new center that will enrich so many
people’s lives for generations to come.
The Dr. Esther Grushkin Center for Arts + Culture offers a mix of in-person and
14 15
• Social Services at Seaview Senior Housing – The JCC provides a social
services professional to serve as the on-site staff coordinator for social
services exclusively for residents of Seaview Senior Housing, connecting
them to services throughout Staten Island.

counseling and support groups. Through a partnership with Weill Cornell,
we present TRIO for Successful Aging, where mental health and medical
expertise come together in an integrated program to provide social and
aging support services.
• Evidence Based Programs – These programs are proven ways to promote
health and prevent diseases among older adults. The JCC offers several
classes to help improve balance, prevent falls, reduce arthritis pain, and
assist individuals with dementia and their loved ones.
• Beatrice Victor Senior Olympics – A friendly annual competition in sports
and mental challenges produced in collaboration with other local non-profit
organizations. This year, we brought the event back in person!
• Virtual Senior Center – This program provides isolated seniors with online
classes on a variety of topics and opportunities to socialize, with unlimited
internet access to classes.
Senior ServicesAs the “baby boomer” generation ages, the number of Staten Island older adults
continues to grow. The JCC is helping adults enter this new phase of life with
programs and services geared toward keeping them happy, healthy, and engaged.
We are happy to provide our services both in-person and virtually, so we can best
serve all those in need.
Centers for Life Long Development – Older Adult Center Network
This year, we launched the Older Adult Center Network to bring CLLD
programming across Staten Island.
• Bernikow OAC – Housed at our Bernikow Building, this OAC offers intellectual
stimulation, health and wellness education and activities, cultural and inter-
generational opportunities, and arts and entertainment for active adults.
This program serves over 10,000 people every year.
• Stapleton OAC & South Shore OAC – Located in Stapleton on the North
Shore and at our Avis Building on the South Shore, these centers offer a wide
variety of activities to benefit body and mind. Services include education,
health screenings, arts and crafts, nutritious meals, and assistance with
social services.
• NORC GO KOSSAH – The JCC operates Staten Island’s first NORC
(Naturally Occurring Retirement Community) in Stapleton. Stapleton qualifies
as a NORC because it has a large proportion of residents over 60, but was
not specifically planned or designed to meet the needs of seniors living
independently in their homes. The NORC, named GO KOSSAH (Keeping Our
Seniors Safe And Healthy), provides services that complement those offered at
the JCC’s Stapleton Neighborhood Senior Center.

Family Solutions to Memory Loss
Health & WellnessThe pandemic completely changed the way we look at health and wellness. It also
underscored the need for an emphasis on mental wellness. The JCC has worked
hard to adapt and create a safe environment that focuses on helping people regain
a sense of wellness.
• Fitness – As part of our membership, participants get access to our 5,000
square feet of equipment and training areas. We also offer our members group
exercise classes, including yoga, zumba, pilates, crossfit, and kickboxing. In
response to the pandemic, we also launched outdoor fitness classes, including
hikes.
• Aquatics – The JCC is the home of one of the few indoor pool facilities on
Staten Island. We offer private lessons, recreational swim time, and competitive
youth swim teams. In the summer, we also have our Summer Swim Club at our
beautiful outdoor pool.
• Sports – Throughout the year, classes and clinics are available for children
in the areas of soccer, basketball, aquatics, and tennis. We also offer soccer,
aquatics, and basketball camps in the summer. This year, we began offering a
Krav Maga class to teach self-defense to people of all ages!
• Nutrition and lifestyle choices – As we age, health becomes even more
important. We offer fitness classes tailored to seniors to keep them active and
strong. This year, we hosted virtual seminars in conjunction with doctors from
Richmond University Medical Center on a variety of health-related topics.
• Physical Therapy – We were excited to welcome Staten Island Physical
Therapy to our Wellness Center in the Bernikow Building.
In the next ten years, it is projected that one in five Americans will either
have Alzheimer’s Disease or will provide care for a family member with this
disease. Our Family Solutions to Memory Loss Programming helps those
with cognitive issues, as well as their caregivers. Our specialized programs
for those with memory loss include memory stimulation activities,
exercise, creative art and music classes, gardening, and support groups.
Rosemary’s Place, the first program of its kind on Staten Island,
opened in 2018 to serve individuals recently diagnosed with Alzheimer’s
Disease and related dementias. Rosemary’s Place is funded by the
Richmond County Savings Foundation in honor of Rosemary Manzulli.
My Place serves individuals with mild or mid-stage Alzheimer’s
Disease and related dementias.
Who cares for the caregiver? We do. At our Caregiver Support Center,
we offer support groups, referrals to community resources, and assistance
coordinating care. We also run joint programming for caregivers and their
loved ones.
Family Solutions to Memory Loss is funded in part by grants from New
York State Department of Health and New York City Dept. for the Aging.
Special thanks to Michael Manzulli.

Social ServicesAs a result of the pandemic and the crisis in Ukraine, so many people in our
community are still hurting. Now more than ever, the social services that the
JCC provides are crucial to helping people overcome adversity. We saw the
needs for our social services grow immensely over the past year. By partnering
with other agencies, we provide a lifeline of support, guiding people toward the
services they need and walking with them every step of the way.

also hope to have a positive impact on our local business community.
JCC Career Connections offers comprehensive assessments that helps
