In this time of unprecedented change, I am pleased to be able to strike a note of optimism about the performance of books in our categories. We have seen readers increase the time spent on hobbies and an increase in demand for our books.
While there has been a shift to online sales, I believe that this clear reader demand is a positive sign and great opportunity for our customers and partners
In our previous two catalogues since becoming independent, I thanked our authors, distribution partners and suppliers for their support and encouragement. We owe a debt of thanks to the same group for the tremendous work in overcoming the many barriers and challenges faced this year. We have remained largely in print and in stock of books, have published new titles as planned and have maintained the distribution of books to meet demand with as little disruption as possible. I am also incredibly proud of the David and Charles team for the extraordinary effort put in this year.
We go into this Autumn program with confidence and excitement at the opportunities for our new titles. It could not be a better time for us to be publishing Crochet Iconic Women, a book that celebrates the lives of inspirational women while supporting our charity partner, the WONDER Foundation. A rebellious streak to the list sees us publishing Crochet Hacking and Alternknit Rebellion, while we address the subject of sustainability with the first books in our Zero Waste series. This theme is picked up again as we look forward to 2021 with our Cross Stitch for the Earth title following on from the success of Spring 2020 bestseller, Cross Stitch for the Soul.
Stitch 50 Dogs is an exquisite book and will be closely followed by Stitch 50 Cats in 2021 with both books published in a hardback, gift-friendly format. Early 2021 will also see the fantastic 100 Micro Crochet Motifs, a new date for our Pokémon Crochet release and a book we are tremendously excited about, 100 Plants that Heal.
These are just a selection of the fantastic titles we have coming through in Autumn 2020 and early Spring 2021. We look forward to working with you across all of these books and our strong and resilient backlist as we take the steps to move forward.
Best Wishes,
James Woollam

Consider making Audrey’s necklace with beads or tiny plastic pearls. The necklace she used in the movie “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” has in fact a huge brooch in the middle and several strands of pearls.
Can’t find silver yarn and you really want the tiara and necklace to sparkle? Then use silver embroidery floss and grab it together with the silver yarn when crocheting!

Why her Majesty? Because she is the longest reigning Monarch in British History, which means that she has dedicated her entire life in service to her country, putting herself and her interests always second. She is an example of dedication and sense of duty; of hard work and determination; of resilience and adaptability. She has been a privileged witness of all major events of the 20th Century and has successfully rendered her reign more modern, open and sensitive to a changing public, while maintaining the traditions associated with the crown. She is definitely the living symbol of British culture.

CROCHET HACKING
CROCHET HACKINGEmma Friedlander-Collins
Crochet new life into unloved, unworn clothes with sustainable fashion hacks! This book is a toolkit of hints, tips and instructions to help you rethink the clothes that are already around you, from your own wardrobe to second-hand stores and thrifted finds. Whether it’s repairing tears and holes, adjusting the fit of a garment such as increasing the length of the body or sleeves, or completely restyling a piece of clothing into something altogether more exciting, these innovative crochet ideas will keep more garments out of landfill and bring them back to life as your new wardrobe faves.
There are only a few things you’ll need to get crochet hacking and the first
is probably the most important.
CrochetHackingStarter Kit
CONFIDENCE
More than anything, don’t be afraid of cutting into your clothes. It can be terrifying at first, we’re not used to interacting with our wardrobes like this, but people used to do this all the time. Almost any mis-cut can be fixed with a bit of wool and some lateral thinking, and at the very worst you’ll have learned how not to do something. You can do this!
FABRIC SCISSORS
For almost everything in this book I would say ‘use it as a guide, not a rule’. Except for this one. Cutting up fabric with a little pair of scissors that you find in the kitchen drawer will never be ok. Go on, try it, right now. Found some? Ok, grab any old thing and try and make a nice cut. Doesn’t work, does it? It will be really hard work and the end result will be raggedy. Proper fabric scissors will cut like a dream, leave a lovely smooth finish and leave your hacks looking as professional as possible.
EMBROIDERY NEEDLE
I will happily use any needle I have to hand. A yarn needle is a great size but can make it hard work when sewing into fabric. A large eye embroidery needle will take most yarns and make hand sewing a bit easier.
CROCHET HOOKS
This is a given, but you will notice that I often recommend using a smaller hook than is usual for the yarn weight. This is because it makes a slightly denser crochet fabric, and when you’re working into jersey or wool you want to try to keep the crochet elements from stretching out too much. I often use a mix of yarn weights too, so I find working with a hook that fits the lighter weight yarn tends to be my preferred approach, but experiment and see what works for you.
BODKIN
This is also called a bradawl and is just a long pointy tool used in leather work. They are really inexpensive and having tried a number of things to make holes in fabric this is definitely the best. That said, I often use large sewing needle and then widen the hole with a knitting needle.
LEATHER PUNCH
I have also used a leather punch to make holes in fabric that my husband bought years ago when he was going through a leather working phase (he’s an engineer with a tool obsession, I assume they all go through a similar phase at some point) and it’s ideal for using on denim.
WASHABLE PEN
Used to mark where holes are needed on your fabric.
This book is not just a collection of crochet patterns or a selection of makes and hacks to keep you looking ‘de rigeur’. Oh no! This book is actually a tool kit of hints, tips and instructions to help you rethink the clothes that are already around you, from your own wardrobe to second-hand stores and thrifted finds. This book is a way of life.
New V second handThis book is for people that want to rehabilitate ill-fitting t-shirts and make them functioning members of society again. It’s for people that want to fall back in love with jackets and jumpers that have been lying at the bottom of drawers and hanging in the back of cupboards. Using a bit of crochet, scissors and some simple stitches this book of crochet hacking will show you how to completely rethink your relationship to clothes, inspire you to say yes to preloved, save things from landfill and make real change in the world.
Hacking: A Way of Life
There are already enough clothes in the world. Fact. Every year 80 billion new garments are sold, that is a HUGE amount. As I buy around 4 billion of those, that means that 76 billion are making their way into western wardrobes as we speak. When you get to thinking about how many plants have to be grown, watered, sprayed with pesticides, processed into fabric, cut, sewn, pressed, and then shipped around the world to get to a high street shop near you, it’s mind boggling.
Add that to the fact that most people throw away half a kilo of clothes a year. Each. Even if you donate yours to charity, only 10% are actually bought and rehoused, the rest still end up in landfill giving off methane and take 200 years to break down or get sent overseas for someone else to deal with. This, my friends, is a big part of the climate crisis and to make a difference we need to either keep the clothes we have or buy second-hand clothes.
But this is not a book to make you feel guilty about that. In fact, this book is the opposite. This is for people that love clothes. Keeping them for longer definitely helps, a garment kept for over three years will reduce its global impact by 20–30%. But buying something second-hand instead of new will reduce the carbon footprint by a whopping 82%. So, I’m not talking about mending stuff to make sure it lives longer, I’m talking about remaking stuff. Seeing the potential in second-hand and remodelling, remaking and changing it to make it something you truly love.

18 | KNITTING
ALTERKNIT REBELLION
ALTERKNIT REBELLIONAnna Bauer
A collection of bright, bold and beautiful knitting patterns based on Honsestrikk, a Danish knitting movement from the 1970s which broke away from traditional knitting rules. Honsestrikk, which loosely translates as ‘chicken stitch’ was influenced by the radical social and political movements of the time, including the women’s rights movement, and this can be seen in the personal and political messages of the some of the pattern designs. Instead of the more traditional fair isle colourwork techniques, Honsestrikk knitting featured political messages and motifs, colours clashed and borders butted up against each other in a riot of colour and pattern. With this collection of basic designs and patterns, you can choose your own combinations and create and knit your own free, radical knits.
INCREASES
Increases can also be made in different ways, but I mainly make increases by picking
up a new stitch through the loop in-between, i.e. the yarn running between two
stitches. Insert your needle into the loop from the front and knit into the back of
this loop. By twisting the loop into an eye and picking up a new stitch through the
back of it, you stop this from becoming a hole.
TYING OFF THREADS
It’s hard to get away from the fact that when you knit in lots of colours, there
will be lots of threads to tie off. I recommend that you don’t stitch in loose ends
or tie knots on the reverse. No, pour a glass of wine, put a bit of music on and tie
off properly! At the top of mittens and thumbs, I usually thread the yarn through
the remaining stitches a few times in a spiral, using a wool needle. It gives a bit
of extra reinforcement at the place most exposed to wear, an old trick I picked up
somewhere or other.
BLOCKING AND SHAPING
Once you have knitted your first project, tied off all threads and sewn on all buttons,
you are nearly finished, but only nearly. There remains the last small step of shaping
and blocking your project and this makes a big difference. The yarn must now
properly understand that it is now a mitten or a jumper and not a ball of yarn
anymore. When you rinse the garment and shape it while damp, the fibres will lie
correctly and uneven areas can be smoothed out and, surprisingly, any flaws can
often be magicked away.
If you tie off the threads properly, you can treat yourself to something nice to eat (or drink)
while doing so.

Chickenwrap
Size: Approx. 110 cm (43½in) crossways at the widest point. A size that fi ts most.
Yarn: 2-ply wool in various colours, e.g. Rauma Finull.
Yardage: Approx. 200g (7oz)
Needles: 3mm (US 3) circular needle (80cm/31½in long)
Tension/Gauge: 26 stitches per 10cm (4in) with 3mm (US 3) needles
Accessories: Darning needle, scissors.
MAIN PIECE
Cast on 100 stitches onto 3mm circular needle. If you want to steek your wrap, add 5 bridging stitches. Knit back and forth or in the round. Choose a pattern and the colours you’d like and the order you want them to be in.
Knit until the work measures 100–110cm (39½–43½in). Cast off and tie off the threads.
If you choose to steek: use a sewing machine to sew zigzag seams on each side around the middle bridging stitch. Then sew a straight seam inside the zigzag seams on each side. Take a deep breath and cut up between the seams.
61P R O J E C T S
This “wrap” can be knitt ed in two ways: either in stocking stitch back and forth, or on the round like a tube and then steeked. If you want to try and knit in a patt ern back and forth, this is an excellent project
to start with.

There is no sight more cheery than a perky little robin redbreast. This little bird will need a good deal of stuffing to puff out his bright chest. Make a flock and hang them from a twisted willow branch, covered in twinkling lights.
You will need for one robin• 7.5cm x 7.5cm (3in x 3in) red fabric or felt
• 25.5cm x 15.5cm (10in x 6in) brown fabric or felt
• 7.5cm x 5cm (3in x 2in) white fabric or felt
• Scrap of yellow felt
• Two micro black buttons
• Polyester stuffing and fabric glue
• Brown coton à broder
Finished size: 10cm x 7.5cm (4in x 3in)
Robin Decorations1. Use the robin pattern (see Templates) to cut out: two bodies, four wings and one tail from brown fabric/felt; one breast from red fabric/felt; one belly from white fabric/felt; one beak and two feet from yellow felt.
2. Place the bodies right sides together and sew from A to B only, using a 6mm (¼in) seam allowance and stitching by machine, or by hand with very small backstitches, using matching thread.
3. Place the red breast on top of the white belly so it overlaps at the seam and tack (baste) in place. Blanket stitch the two pieces together by hand. Sew the tail to the other end of the belly.
4. Insert the joined breast/belly/tail piece into the main body, matching and pinning point A to the tail with a little nip and tucking. Sew all the way around leaving NO gap for turning through (see step 6).
5. Pair the wings together, right sides facing, and stitch all the way around the edge, leaving NO turning gap. Make a slit in the inside layer only of each sewn wing (take care not to make the slits on the same side of each wing). Turn the wings to the right side through the slits, and then sew the slits closed. Sew around the edge of each wing with blanket stitch.
6. To turn the robin’s body through to the right side, make a slit on one side of the bird’s body where one of the wings will be positioned (the wing will hide the sewn up slit). Turn inside out and stuff with polyester stuffing paying particular attention to the breast. Make sure the robin is really firm, squashing the body around in your hands to get a nice shape. Sew the slit closed with ladder stitch (see Techniques: Utility stitches). Apply fabric glue to the open side of the wings, then attach to either side of the robin’s body making sure to cover the turning slit.
7. Embroider over the body seams with blanket stitch, then sew a micro button eye on either side of the robin’s head pulling the thread up tightly to get an indentation for the eye socket.
8. Glue or sew the beak onto the robin’s head and the feet beneath the body. Sew a length of decorative cord or a thin piece of ribbon to the back of the bird for hanging.

This door wreath is made from a simple wire base decorated with fabric rags and felt stars and hearts. It’s a great way to use up those linen leftovers from a year’s worth of stitching projects. My children help with the tearing up of the fabric and the tying of the knots. The hearts and stars take just a couple of evenings to complete. The wreath would look great on any internal door, or use it to decorate the feature wall in the living room. For coordinated Christmas decorations, make heart garlands and hanging stars for the tree.
You will need• 1.5m (1¾yd) 120cm (42in) wide dress-weight cotton fabric
• Wire coat hanger shaped into a circle
• Two 33cm x 40.5cm (13in x 16in) pieces of white felt
• Coton à broder: red and taupe, one skein each
• Polyester stuffing
• 23cm x 15cm (9in x 6in) red felt
• Three small pearl buttons
• Twelve small red heart buttons
Finished size: wreath diameter approx. 30.5cm (12in)
Christmas Wreath
Making the wreath base 1. Cut off the selvedge edges of the fabric. Snip along the edge of the fabric every 4cm (1½in) and tear into strips. Put one strip aside.
Some fabrics tear better down or across the grain. Experiment to
find which direction is best for the fabric you are working with.
2. Pull off the stray threads and cut the remaining strips into 12.5cm (5in) lengths. This is a crucial measurement – too long a strip will result in limp rags, too short a strip will result in no rags at all. Stack the strips up and cut through a load at one time. The last thing you want to do is to cut them too neatly.
You can use any fabric leftovers if you don’t mind a more hotch- potch look.

A complete resource for furniture upholstering, regardless of your abilities, with easy-to-follow, illustrated instructions explaining all the essential upholstery techniques, from covering buttons to stripping and upholstering entire chairs. Build your skills at your own pace, with advice on the basics such as choosing materials and tools for the job and estimating yardage, as well as more complex upholstering techniques. It features invaluable advice on what to look for when buying second hand furniture, teaching you what’s fixable and what’s not as well as how to avoid costly mistakes.
PL A NNING YOUR FA BR IC CUTS
TOOLS AN D M ATE R IALS
• Item of furniture: to measure for re-covering
• Notepad and pencil• Soft tape measure• Metre or yard rule• Cutting table• Tailor’s chalk• Sharp scissors
Once you have chosen a piece of furniture to upholster, you’ll need to decide on the top cover and how much material is needed to make it. The first step is to take measurements of the necessary components and draw up a cutting plan to estimate the correct quantity of fabric. A chair is used for the cutting plan in this example.
Take measurements from the chair either before it is stripped or after the new upholstery has been completed. If the chair has been stripped to the frame, measure the fabric generously. Use the old pieces of fabric as a pattern, but again, measure generously to allow for new padding and turnings. Always cut the fabric pieces into squares or rectangles, and mark the underside so you know what piece it is and which side is the top.
Most upholstery fabric is 1.35 m (54 in) wide, but it is occasionally wider, so check before you start the plan. Fabric with a directional pattern will go from top to bottom on the back and from back to front on the seat. This also applies to fabric with a pile, such as velvet. With this type of fabric the warp yarns go vertically and the weft yarns horizontally or parallel to the floor on the seat.
Upholsterer’s Tip
On a chair seat the pile of the fabric has to come from back to front so that when you stand up from the chair, the fabric pile follows.
DRAWING UP THE PLAN
1 Draw a chart for the measurements of the components and an outline of a cutting plan, as
shown in the diagram.
Sketch out a chart to note the name of the fabric component, the number it requires, the abbreviation it uses, and its length and width. These measurements can then be transferred to the cutting plan.
2 Take accurate measurements of the chair’s components with a tape measure and
record them on the chart. Measure the largest pieces first – the seat, and then the inside back, measuring first the length, followed by the width. The covers for inside arms, outside arms and cushions can usually be taken from half the width. The pieces for the wings and facings can usually be taken from the offcuts.
3 Transfer the measurements to the cutting plan. Note the different plans for plain and patterned fabrics. Once you’ve
recorded the measurements on the plan, total up the length measurements to figure the amount of fabric you’ll need.
4 Spread the fabric out on a large table or a tabletop on trestles and mark the required pieces, either with tailor’s
chalk or pins, using the cutting plans illustrated as a guide. A metre or yard rule is useful here for marking straight lines. Using sharp scissors, cut the fabric into the various components, marking each one on the back with its name (use the abbreviations suggested on page 35).
CHECKLIST
1 Before you start marking and cutting the fabric, ask yourself the following questions: Is this the correct fabric? Is it the correct length and width? Is it the correct colour? Is it dirty or damaged? Are there any flaws in the yardage? Have I forgotten anything, such as seam allowances?
2 Check the size of your workbench: this should ideally be large enough to lay out the required pieces for patterning.
3 Make sure you have all your tools close at hand: chalk, masking tape (or pieces of paper for labelling), pins and sharp scissors.
4 Check the pattern: does it need to be centred on the furniture? Is it correctly placed on the yardage to be cut? If there are stripes, are they aligned? Have you taken into account the seams that might appear in the wrong place (the middle of the inside back, for example)? When you have the patterns in place, remember you need to allow for seams – do not forget to include this in your figures for the original measuring.
5 Now mark and cut all pieces for the furniture. Label the pieces with masking tape or paper and stick the labels onto each piece of fabric. Don’t forget to mark the direction of the top and bottom on the fabric. If your workspace is limited, cut the large pieces first, and the pieces you will need to attach first.
TIPS FOR TAKING THE CORRECT MEASUREMENTS
1 2
Make sure that when you measure for a new cover you do it carefully and accurately. Allow enough fabric for the seams if you are sewing pieces together, extra fabric for tucking in, and extra fabric to hold onto when attaching it to the frame. It is unwise to use the existing fabric to make new patterns, except for the cushions and front facings. Make sure you cut the main pieces into squares and rectangles so you can adjust the fabric to the frame and new padding.
First, take the measurements for the largest pieces – the length is for those pieces that will run up the roll, the width is for those pieces running across the covering fabric. Do not include the selvedge (uncut edge) of the fabric in your measuring and cutting. In traditional upholstery, a measured estimate is usually good enough. Slightly oversized pieces are fine, as any trimming or shaping takes place during the upholstery and hand finishing afterwards.

MAKING A CHOICE
If you’re having difficulty figuring out which style is the right one for you, don’t despair. Lots of people are “hybrids” when it comes to decorating preferences. When designing a hybrid room, a good way to compromise is to pick a dominant style and then add accent pieces and accessories in a different style. Remember that the number one rule in decorating is: if you like it, it’s right. Mix and match, and express yourself.
Remember that fabric “grade” is not an indication of quality or durability; it’s just an indicator of how expensive the fabric is to make. Read the details on the fabric label attached to your swatch and make your decision accordingly.
Regardless of colour, fibre, thread count, or grade, upholstery fabrics should always be chosen to serve your needs, whether they be fashionable or practical. There are countless choices to be made, so don’t settle for anything you’re not in love with. Most importantly, be sure to pick a fabric that you can truly live with. And, if you grow tired of it in a few years, remember that virtually all upholstered furniture can be re-covered.
A contemporary line mix textile design which looks hand painted.
CONTE M POR ARYThe term contemporary covers several styles of furniture that were developed in the latter half of the twentieth century. It’s not “modern”, but it is an updated look with sleek, rounded lines, and clean, crisp shapes. Contemporary is considered to be a fashion-forward, upscale design look that favours simplicity and a minimalist approach – the focus is on function and efficiency. Fabrics lean towards textures and weaves in solids, stripes and prints. Colours may be neutral, or bold with striking patterns. Leather is a popular upholstery choice
for contemporary designs. (Accessories may lean towards metal and glass.) One of today’s most popular upholstery looks is “casual contemporary”. It still features lean lines and strong silhouettes, but is much more relaxed, allowing a warmer, more comfortable look.
S LI PCOVE RAlso known as the “slipcover look”, this style has a tailored cover that slips on and off for a comfortable, lived-in look. Slipcover styles enable you to change the look of an entire room simply by changing your furniture covers. “True” slipcovers come all the way off for dry cleaning or spot cleaning.
ECLEC TIC Eclectic interiors are highly individualized and feature a diverse mix of compatible styles. For example, an antique armoire might be paired with a contemporary sofa and chair, with occasional tables that are similar, but don’t match. Accents might include objects collected from around the world, unusual artwork, or pieces with whimsical or
sentimental value. In eclectic room designs, furniture and textured fabric covers typically cross styles and periods, while colour is often the common denominator. True eclectic style can be as distinctive and beautiful as any other category.
Bright, clashing prints make a bold statement in this velvet textile.
There are a number of different textiles to choose from when upholstering a piece of furniture. Your choice of textile will depend on a number of factors – primarily the piece of furniture you are upholstering, but also its use, the room it is going into, and of course your own personal style preferences. Most people know what they like when they see it. But if you take a minute to learn how to define your style preferences, you’ll be more likely to find exactly the furnishings you’re looking for.
Plush fabrics such as velvet, mohair, corduroy or, as shown here, chenille, are inviting and long-wearing.
Traditional botanical motifs, a neutral background and modern palette create a great transitional style.
CHOOSING A STYLE
“Style” is a very personal thing. You may love the smooth, sleek lines of contemporary pieces, or you may prefer the traditional charm of furnishings from the eighteenth century. That’s the beauty of home furnishings – there’s so much to choose from that it’s easy to find the pieces that express your unique style.
It is helpful to know the basic style category you’re looking for; it gives you a great place to start. To help you focus in on a ”look”, browse through your favourite magazines to find pieces or entire rooms that appeal to you. Tear out the pages and take them with you when you shop. Whether it’s a sofa, loveseat, chair or ottoman, upholstered furniture usually falls into one of the following main style categories:
TR ADITIONALThis term refers to that designed with a deliberate adherence to the past. It is by far the largest of the style categories, with a dozen or more sub-categories ranging from Italian Renaissance to Louis XV or Queen Anne, and Chippendale to Art Deco. Traditional styles are more conservative – perhaps even formal – and feature a wealth of elegant details, such as symmetrical designs, graceful carved curves, rich and mellow colours, dark polished woods like cherry and mahogany, and fine upholstery. Think of European antiques,
wingback chairs, camelback sofas, damask, jacquard and chintz fabric covers, and Oriental influences. These are good examples of what “traditional” styling is all about.
TR AN SITIONALThese designs blend influences from a variety of old and new style categories. As a result, the overall look is much more up-to-date than pure traditional styles. Transitional designs, since they usually incorporate both traditional and contemporary elements, are more versatile with regard to interior decorating. Furnishings with transitional styling are easy to coordinate, creating a casual, easy-going look. These styles are more understated, and cater to today’s laid-back lifestyles. This is the world of overstuffed sofas, easy-care “performance” fabrics, solid colours, and lighter-finish woods that will help you to create warm, relaxed interiors that favour neutral colours and soft textures, and make for an inviting look. Picture a loft apartment – light and airy, high ceilings, sleek furniture designs
upholstered in neutrals, with artwork, collectables, pillows and cushions bringing in bright colour splashes.

ACKN OWLE DG E M E NTSTo my mother for her love and patience when I have been engrossed in the “book”. To my many friends who have been so supportive, especially to Peter for his diligent proof reading, and to Pat for providing the food. Not forgetting the students I have met over the past 25 years. Without them and their chairs, I would never have learned so much. Hopefully this book will be a reminder to all of them of the techniques I have taught them.
FOREWORD
The restoration and reupholstery of furniture has recently been enjoying a revival. This new appreciation has been fuelled by an admiration of traditional quality, the wonderful variety of fabrics available and the desire of people of all ages and backgrounds to embark upon projects with pleasing and worthwhile objectives. This guide will help to lead you through the basics of the craft, but also introduce you to some of my personal “tips”, which come from many years’ experience of tackling the “knotty problems” that frequently occur in upholstery. The craft is labour intensive and requires patience and perseverance – but the rewards are wonderful. I hope that this book will be a useful addition to your bookshelf and will encourage you, so that you will both enjoy and take pride in the results.

THE BOOK OF BORO
THE BOOK OF BOROSusan Briscoe
A comprehensive look at the Japanese textile of boro by a renowned expert in this field, Susan Briscoe. Features a stitch directory and instructions for all the necessary techniques . A collection of 20 patterns inspired by historic boro garments.
For this small-scale komebukuro bag, I have used
a similar construction style to original komebukuro
(see Boro History). The patchwork panels that form
the sides are pieced in strips, with the addition
of a few raw-edge appliqué patches. Using 1⁄4in
(6mm) seams throughout, make a 41⁄2in (11.4cm)
pieced square from four 41⁄2 x 11⁄2in (11.4 x 3.8cm)
strips. Make four pieced squares in all (the bag side
panels), add some raw-edge appliqué patches at
random, and sew each to a 41⁄2in (11.4cm) fabric
square (the bag base) to make the cross shape that
completes the bag outer. Join fi ve 41⁄2in (11.4cm)
fabric squares to make the bag lining in the same
mini komebukuro bag
way. Sew the side seams of the bag outer with
right sides together, so that this time the seams
are on the inside of the fi nished bag rather than
on the outside as on the larger komebukuro bag.
Repeat for the bag lining. Make four drawstring
loops (see Komebukuro Bag, step 3) and sew one
to the centre of each top side of the lining, with the
lining fabric folded over to the outside of the bag by
1⁄2in (1.3cm). Fold the top of the bag outer over by
1⁄2in (1.3cm), and do the same with the lining. Place
the lining inside the bag, wrong sides together,
and hand sew all the way around the top. Add
drawstring cords (see Komebukuro Bag, step 8).

THE JOY OF SKETCH
THE JOY OF SKETCHJen Russell-Smith
Rediscover the pleasure you got from childhood drawing, before you became too self-conscious and self-critical to enjoy it. Most children draw. Before we can write, even, we scribble and sketch and create. But somehow that gets lost as we get older. In this accessible guide, largely self-taught artist Jen Russell-Smith takes beginners by the hand and breaks down the barriers we face around sketching, and shows you how to begin with quick, loose sketches building your confidence and skills to draw spontaneously.
