Preface
Rajmash (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) is an important crop of Himalayan hills and
is traditionally being grown in kharif season. It is prone to frost during rabi
season, which restricts its cultivation to kharif season in northern hills. There is
a huge variability available in hills especially indeterminate plant type, which is
of long duration.
Vivekananda Parvatiya Krishi Anusandhan Sansathan (ICAR), Almora has
made a sizable collection of rajmash from interior and remote areas of
Uttarakhand hills especially during the last three years. The areas like Munsiyari,
Chamoli, Joshimath, Pithoragarh, Kharkkarki, Dhakna etc are known for their
special rajmash land races/ varieties. In addition, we collected rajmash line
from Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and North Eastern hill states
too. The variability available in these areas is not only to be conserved but also
it requires evaluation and categorization so that these rajmash germplasm lines
may be utilized by rajmash breeder in the breeding programme for genetic
improvement.
The productivity of Rajmash varies from season to season and region to
region. The yields are generally higher in temperate than the tropical zones.
Rajmash cultivation is possible in spring as well as kharif season. During spring
season rajmash is sown in mid hills by end of March and harvested by June
end and again it is sown in July first week and harvested in October.
We trust this catalogue contains valuable information on various quantitative
and qualitative traits of rajmash which may be utilized by rajmash breeders for
the genetic improvement. These collections are well characterized and
documented in this catalogue.

1. Introduction
Conservation and use of plant genetic resources is essential for sustainable agricultureand food security. A vast genetic diversity of different agriculturally important crops havebeen collected and conserves in situ and ex situ for present use and posterity. However, these vast germplasm collections are not being utilized to a great extent by the breeders. The possible reason is lack of information on potential of germplasm, characterization dataand documentation. A thorough evaluation of germplasm is an essential/pre-requisite for itsutilization in crop improvement. A proper evaluation and characterization of locally adaptedcultivars is urgently needed for varietal diversification and development of new superiorvarieties in terms of yield and resistance to diseases. Rajmash being an important crops andis primarily grown in hills during summer/ kharif season. Uttarakhand is rich in germplasmof different crops. Presently VPKAS is maintaining a good number of determinate andindeterminate Rajmash germplasm. Germplasm from different parts of Uttarakhand havenot been properly evaluated and characterized so far. As the Protection of Plant Varietyand Farmers’ Rights (PPV & FR) Act 2001 has come enforce since January 1, 2005;registration of new/extent/farmers variety of Rajmash has been started w.e.f. 21.6.2007 bythe PPV & FR aurthority. Proper characterization of this crop attain utmost importance toprotect and exploit the genetic resources of Uttarakhand and simultaneously safe guard theinterests of the farmers of the state.
Keeping this objective in view, Department of Agriculture, Uttarakhand funded
adhoc research project entitled “Evaluation and Genetic Enhancement of Local
Rajmash (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) and Local Bhatt (Glycine max L.) Germplasm of
Uttarakhand” to Vivekananda Parvatiya Krishi Anusandhan Sansthan (Indian
Council of Agricultural Research) Almora.
About this catalogue
The present catalogue gives details of 277 accessions. This germplasm comprised
collection from within Uttarakhand State and those procured from other sources
including exotic. These have been evaluated for economically important traits at
Vivekananda Parvatiya Krishi Anusandhan Sansthan (Indian Council of Agricultural
Research) Almora, during 2006-07. The catalogue gives the following details in
brief.
● Listing of evaluation data of individual accessions along with the source district
and state of collection. The data reported for all the accessions are the average
values of the quantitative descriptors.
● Statistical analysis viz. mean, minimum, maximum, range, Standard deviation,
correlation and multiple regression analysis of the data for quantitative traits
and for qualitative traits frequency distributions have been given.
2
● Retrieval of information: Sample queries on several important traits or
combination of traits these queries have been retrieved using the FOXPRO
package.
Germplasm collection and evaluation
Rajmash (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) commonly known as common bean, is an
important pulse crop of temperate and sub-temperate region of India. Enormous
variability exits for growth habit, spiny or non spiny nature, foliage shape and colour,
floral makeup, pod shape, seed size and colour, yield and yield related characters. In
order to study this variability, explorations were undertaken in 2005-06 to collect
local land races and cultivated rajmash germplasm from rajmash growing areas of
Uttarakhand. Those areas were covered which are known for specific type of rajmash.
The germplasm were collected from the interior areas in different locations where
predominantly rajmash was cultivated. Jammu and Kashmir state is also famous for
rajmash. A total 55 germplasm lines were collected from different districts of Kashmir.
The details of the districts, tehsil, villages from where the local germplasm was
collected is mentioned in passport data. The number of collections made and place
of collection is also mentioned in these tables. The large variation for the seed colour
and seed coat varigation was observed among the germplasm collected. Some of
these variations are (shown in the photographs in the front page).
These germplasm were evaluated during kharif 2007 and data was recorded on
23 characters. A wide range of variability was observed for morphological attributes,
yield and its contributing characters.
A total of 277 germplasm lines comprising of both exotic and indigenous
collections were evaluated at Experimental Farm at Vivekananda Parvatiya Krishi
Anusandhan Sansthan, Hawalbagh, Almora located at 290 36’ N, 700 40’E at an altitude
of 1250m (amsl). The climate of this site is sub-temperate with minimum and
maximum temperature ranging between 18.10C to 30.50C over two years. The entries
germplasm was grown in an augmented block design using 3 checks viz, VL Rajma
63; VL Rajma 125 and Shalimar Rajmash 1. Out of 277 germplasm lines 182 were
sown in 2006 and the rest of the lines were sown in 2007. Out of 277 germplasm
lines 248 germplasm were germinated and rest were not germinated. One row of 3
m lengths for each genotype were sown and recommended seed rate and package of
practice were followed to raise a healthy crop. Two irrigations were applied during
the crop season and the fertilizer rate was 60:30:30 N:P:K, respectively. Data were
collected from 5 randomly selected plants from each genotype.
Availability of germplasm
Selection for specific set of desirable accessions can be made on the basis of
characterization and evaluation data presented in catalogue. Request for seed samples
could be made to the Director, VPKAS, Almora (Uttarakhand). Seeds are available
free of charge. The accession numbers must be clearly indicated when such requests
are made.

5. Analysis of Data
Variability Parameters
Among variability parameters in rajmash, higher values of variance and standard
deviation for plant height, days to maturity, test weight, days to 50% flowering and
seed yield per plant were recorded, while as for rest of the traits were found medium
to low. Wide range of variability in plant height (25-295cm), number of pod per
plant (2-20), pod length (7.6-14.7cm), number of seed per pod (2-6), 100 seed weight
(16.32-54.16g) and seed yield per plant (1.57 – 22.20g) has been observed (Table 1).
With the availability of wide range of variation for plant height, seed yield and seed
colour, it opens the scope for development of semi-determinate/determinate/bush
type improved varieties having attractive seed colour with desired traits in view of
demand for export.

Correlation and Regression analysis
Correlation and regression analysis has been done on the following descriptors.
The descriptor seed yield was taken as the dependent variable. The descriptor names
and their codes are as fallows:
Descriptor Code Descriptor name
DFT Days to 50% flowering

LW Leaf width
PH Plant height
DMT Days to 50% maturity

As per the correlation studies for the ten quantitative characters revealed that
seed yield per plant was found positively correlated with all the characters except
plant height. Number of seed per plant was positively correlated with all the traits
except days to 50%flowering, leaf width and plant height. In case of test weight,
negative correlation was observed with leaf width, plant height and number of pods
/plant however rest of the traits were positively correlated with test weight. Number
of pods per plant was positively correlated with all the characters except pod length
and test weight (Table 2).
