state director of collectionsfor the United War Work cam-- 1

paign, has announced that thenational treasury has called upii'.i

j New Mexico for its Hrst pledge offifty per cent of its subscriptions, and has notified county collectors

'and county treasurers to immedi- -ntely begin collecting, on thepledges. It will'be recalled thatpledges made during the cam-paign were payable 50 per bent byDecember 2, another 25 per centnot later than January 15, andthe liual 25 per cent not laterthan March 1.

Some ol the counties have re-

ported the collection of J0 percent ol the total amount pledgedduring the campaign, while othercounties secured- - but little cashduring the week of the campaign.

New Mexico received highhonors during the campaign, inas-much as two huts will be namedafter this state. New Mexico wasone of tfie first ten states to raiseher quota, and will have a mov-ableh- ut

named after it In addi-tion, each of the first ten statessubscribing the largest percent-age will be so honored. Stateheadquarters has recommendedthat one be a Young Men's Christian Association, ami the other aKnightsof Columbus hut. '

I hese buildings will be movableand vill be assigned to the division in France that has the greatest number of New Mexico boys.t he huts will move as the divi

sion moves and will serve theboys, no matter where tiiey arestationed.

Mr McDowell has receivednotice that the Southern depart- -

partments in the amount of oversubscription,

ley. A little in excuss of $5,500were the cash results, whilepledges amounting to SfiSD wereturned in. Unr original quotawas $4,500, and it will be seenthat our county exceeded that bya good sum.

Chairman Fiuley wishes to ex-

press Ins gratitude to all the com-niuuit- v

chairmen throughout thecounty, and all committees andworkers as well. Notwithstand-ing the prevalence of a seriousepidemic at '.ie time, these work-ers pushed the drive, and not onlyachieved success but produced allatlering excess over the quota.

That man can't swim. He's drownInter Luclle shouted. "Won't Homebody gave him?"

"I'll get him," I Immediately volun-teered briefly.

"You'll be drowned yourself," Ladleprotested.

"No, ho won't," Bopp sssured her."Monty enn swim llko n turtle. I'to often Been him In the Unk at the Athletic club. Besides, from fasting bo'saa full of air aa a llfo preserver."

It was not until I had almost reachedbore that I noticed anything necul

by an exclamation ofwomanly concern.

"Is she drowned?" she asked.I shook my bead negatively."J net swallowed o little too much

water, I guess," explained one of themen from the boat "Bbe'll be all rightas soon as she gets a cup of hot coffeeIn ber."

"Who U she, Captain Perkins, andwhy is she dressed that way?" askedLc.r-llc- , Ignoring the reference to coffee.

"I dunno it bo she be," said the cap-tain. "She come aboard at IluenaVista and ssld she wss going to fairView."

"Dressed like thatr"No, sir; sho was dressed swell.

When we struck the rock over yonderI told ber wo might have to swim andshe'd orter dress Just as light as poaal.ble. She went Into the cabin with hergrip, and when she came out she waslike this and asked me If I calculatedthat was light enough. I 'lowed It was,and we didn't have no time for expla.nations, becauso Just then we broke Intwo."

We made a rough stretcher and car.rled the unconscious girl to the houso. When wo had placed her In an upstairsroom wo left her to Luclle's care andhad a stag party In my bedchamber. There were now six men of us.

Of the uewcomcrs the captain was atall, wiry old man with sharp, ferretblack eyes asd a set of whiskers cor-rect-

trimmed for one of the "natives"In "Shore Acres."

One of the other men, a green, lankyyoungster, was obviously an employeeon the boat The other was Just aobviously a passenger. The boatmenwere Inclined to tske things philosoph-ically. The imssenger was annoyedand uncomfortablo under the Incon-veniences hn had beeu made to suffer. He was not a fat uiau, hut bo had abuild similar to mine before 1 startedfasting.

I offered the passenger a suit of myclothe. "You're about my build," Isuggested.

I told the captain and the other manI would outfit them with some of Mr,On-en'- s old clothes. 1 rummaged theeloseu, but all 1 could llnd was aslightly moth eaten suit of eveningclothes and a red and white blazer. Ibad nevrr inspected Mr. Orecu of own-lo- g

"Why don't you try fainting?" d

Bopp amiably."Ilesldcs I have an Important engage-

"Ned Blaney," I repeated. "Thattelegram must have been for him."

"Is there a telephone?" Inquired thepassenger.

We escorted him to It la a body.Over tho wire he asked for the best

hotel In Fair View. That was a cinchfor the operator.

"Hello."Is Mr. N. Blaney registered there?"Thank you. WIU yea see If he Is la

"Tell him to call up Green's bland,"I answered.

"Hello. Tell Mr. Dlaney to call opGreen's Island and ask for Mr. LtpteaS. Clair. Qoodby."

After he had bung up the receiverthere was silence for a few mom eats;then Dopp In a tone of repressed emo-tion Inquired, "May I ask If yea orMr. Upton S. Clalrr

"And you." continued Bopp, check-ing off on his fingers, "feel faint fromhunger and think that you will atarveto death If you don't get food?"

"Is there anything atrange In that?"Bopp said nothing, but picked up a

magazine which Luclle had left openedface downward on the table and hand-ed It to Mr. Clair. He looked at tt fora moment and then smiled.

"I remember when I wrote this. Itwas over a year ago. It's a ballytheory. Isn't It?"

"Didn't you ever try Itr"Why, ao. I've never had time. I've

always wanted to meet some one whohad made the experiment to see if Iwas right"

ask about tho result of the experiment, bocauso you are going to try It yourself."

A burst of applause greeted me fromIlopp.

" 'Hating three meats a day Is a ha-bit'" I quoted. "'We have made ty-

rants of our stomachs. They demandto be fed every so often, and if wo answer that demand we are slave.'"

Llpton B. Clair groaned.1 explained how we had sent our

supplies and cook away ao that wsshould not be tempted.

"And wben do you expect to receiveinoro supplies?" he lntiulrcd.

"You were ou the boat which wasbringing the groceries," I Informedhim.

"Then they sre out there In theIske?"

I nodded, fie ruabed out

THK OARRIZOZO NEWS.

"Where are you going?" Kent yeHed.To av sobm of those groceries,

said the dtoUsgaJabed author. This wss such a weaderful Idea that

we all followed hiss, Kent morethoaghtfal than the rest panslag toget a clothesline from the shed.

It was still too rough to go oat towhere the Mary Bell had gone downeven If we bad possessed a boat batboxes and crate of groceries,, fruitsand vegetables were still streamingpast the leeward point of the cove.

We spent two hours trying to husothese packages. Only one throw net-

ted us anything, and wbea we hadopened the caso we towed in we foundthrco dozen boxes of wet matches.

"How soon can I get away?" Clalrasked Captain Perkins as we straggledup tbo path.

"Tnat sea out there," mused the cap-

tain, "don't look like it had any Inten-tion of quitting for a couple of daysanyhow, so Jest set"

"Stay hero?""You guessed It"Clalr walked on' In silence for a mo-

ment; then he voiced his thoughts thus:"I believe I can make copy out of thisexperience. I'll be a second IloblnsonCrusoe."

" 'Pears to me," debated the captain,"that you got an awful let of societyfor a Robluson Crusoe. Seems llko Irecollect this fellow Crusoe bad onlyone nigger to wait on him."

"His man Friday," interpolated Bopp,"That's the one. If you don't count

the women and the dog there's six hu-man souls oa this Island."

"That won't make any difference."I came to the rescue. "Hvery firstclsss 'Uncle Tom's Cabin' show nowadays has two Topsys and two littleEvas at least We'll have one Ilobln-son Crusea and five Fridays."

That's a good Idea," assentedClalr, enthusiastically following up thescheme with details. "I'll get a beltaad whenever I waat anything I'll ringfor you."

"Flae," agreed Bopp, who began totee possibilities In the scheme. "We'llget you a lot of musical belts, so thatthe ringing won't annoy us any If youkeep It up for soma time."

"Maybe I could rig up an electricchime," Kent suggested, with on eyeto mechanical details of which healone was master. "We'd each haveto have a number dad only answerour own note oa the chime. For In-

stance, 'do' would call for the ginkwho was Friday No. 1. That wouldbe the captain here."

"Let me be Friday the thirteenth,"Bopp continued, "and Jim, the galleymechanic, can be Black Friday. Seatyou're Good Friday you get a hotcross bun. What shall I baptize you.Monty? I can't think of any moraFridays."

'Let me be Ash Wednesday. I don'tcare much for fish anyway."

By this time we had reached thehouse.

Luclle greeted rts downstairs la theliving room.

"Miss Dunmore Is waiting for yon."I looked around to see whom she

was addressing."I mean you, Mr. Blalney.""Who Is Miss Dunmorol""The lady whose life you saved. Do

you mean to say that you didn't rec-ognize her with those things on?"

"I don't know what you mean.""That's right," Bald Bopp. "No mat-

ter what you say we'll all of us agreethat It's true. Wo men must stick to-

gether. Monty never saw the lady be-fore."

This wss especially despicable ontho part of Bopp, as he knew as wellss I dtd that the telegram had been forthe other Blaney whom Clalr bad spo-ken of.

"How about this, then?" InquiredLuclle sweetly, handing me a dampnewspnper clipping. "Bhe had that Inher band all the time."

I looked ut It in amazement. It wasmy own criticism of a production of"As You Like It" which bud beenstaged the week before. One para-graph was marked with u blue penciland read as follows;

Tho fashionable audience which assem- -bld to so Miss Lantland as Rosalind wasobviously disappointed when tho manase-mo- nt
