A SUBSTANTIAL INSTITUTION

A Brief Resume of its Past Showiit to be a Credit to the TownThe New Men Well Known,

Reliable Business Men

Hearing there had been achange in the ownership of theNational Hank of Carlsbad, theofficials were interviewed bythis paper yesterday. II. A.Houser, president, and R. B.Armstrong, cashier, have soldtheir entire stock in the bank toC. II. McLenathen, C. M. Rich-

ards and Elliott Hendricks. Mr.Armstrong has resigned to seekless confining work and Mr.Houser to return to Illinois, their resignations to take effectJanuary 1st, liXri. at which timeMr. McLenathen will be presi-

dent and Mr. Richards cashierof the bank. The new men areboth old friends of the Cl'RRENT

and it is fortunate if there is tobe a change that the officers areto be local men, fully acquaintedwith the peoph here and withthe ways of this country, sothere will be no change in thepolicy of the bank such asthere would undoubtedly be ifstrangers came in. Mr.

has done as much asany man in Carlsbad, in thetwenty years he has lived here,to help build up the country, has made a business success, and is eipjiped in" every wayfor the H)sition of president ofthe bank. Mr. Morgan Livings-ton is to remain as vice-preside-

Mr. Livingston is thelargest individual owner of cat-

tle in this section and, it is un-

derstood is the largest owner ofstock in the bank, and all knowhe is to stay. Mr. Richard"came here from l Muía, III.,nve years ago, wrier ne wascashier of the First NationalBank of that place for manyyears. He went into the lumberbusiness here and organized theRichards Lumber Co. "Bob,"as he is known here, is a goodmixer, has had five years amongthe people here and with hislong experience in the bankingbusiness will be the veryman to make the bank grow, asits cashier.

Elliott Hendricks. Dr. F. F.Doepp and J. O. Cameron arethe remaining directors whohelp in the management of thebanks' business. Mr. Armstrongwill remain here, but Mr. Houserwill return to Illinois after sevenyears in the bank. He camehere to take advantage of theclimate and pronounces it thet'nest in the world. When hewent into the S. T Bitting Bankas its cashier, it was only start-ing. He it as theNational Bank of Carlsbad, inIt ).'. and has seen the bankgrow to four times its size then.Mr. Armstrong, as cashier, andMr. Houser as president tookhold when Mr. Bitting retiredand the bank had grown till to-

day it makes the strongest state-ment it has ever made, and is

proud of the fact that it went'thru the recent panic, without1ever having had to sue a man oncharge oil a loss. It also took1care of all of its customers with-

out borrowing any money or sel-

ling any of its loans, due to itspolicy of big reserve even at asacrifice of big profits, which isthe best safeguard to depositors. The new managers have the bestwishes of all for future success,

Recipe for Pumpkin Pie.

First get your pumpkin. Thenkill it and skin it. Cut pumpkininto small hunks with an axe.Boil the hunks. Boil them somemore. Continue to boil hunksuntil they become a mucky gob.Unless you produce a mucky gobthe pie will be lumpy. Andfresh picked eggs to commoncows milk. Beat the eggs. They may be hard to beat, butbeat them. Use a carpet lieaterif necessary. Now pinch thewilt and add the pinch. Add adash of cinnamon, add a fewnutmegs (whole) these will givethe pie that rich nutty flavor somuch desired. Add three-- 1

fouiths cup of molasses. Do1

not add mustard -- this is not a'mutard plaster, it is a pie. Nowadd this mixture to the muckygob. Sur until thoroughly dis-

solved. stand while yougive your pie pans a coat ofcrust Then pour the mixtureinto the pie pans until they slopover. Place in a hot oven. When you can't stick a fork intothe pies they are done. Re-

move the pies from the oven andplace on the back piazza to oil.If the dog likes them they're allright.- - Foolish Almanak.

The Story of a Dollar Bill

Ton years ajfo a farmer puthia initials on a dollar bill. Thenext day he went to the neuresttown and Bpent it with a mer-chant. Before the year was outhe got the dollar back. Fourtimes in six years he got the dol-

lar back for produce, and threétimes he heard of it in the pock-

ets of neighbors. The last time he got it back,

four years ago, he sent it to amail-ord- er house. He never hasseen that dollar since, and neverwill. That dollar bill will neverpay any more school tax for him, will never build or brighten anyof thé houses of the community. He sent it entirely out of thecircle of usefulness to himselfand his neiithlmrs wiien he sentit to a mail-orde- r house.

Conditions for growing aspara-gus are very favorable. It is acrop that is also veryIt takes a little time to get as-

duct that does not need to huntfor a market It ia always in

demand, and can be shipped longdistances. Growers in NewMexico claim $200.00 to $300.00net profit a year per acre of as-
