Honorable Aldo Leopold and Honrabie R. T. Balthls. both of the Un
iud SUlM Forest Service, will address the people of Carlsbad at theCommercial club roomi on tha evening of February 9th. next. Tha prin
is clpal lubjact of their lectures will berelatlnir to trama and Huh protectionand every member of tha Carlsbad Rod
nd Oun Club ia expected to be there. All cltisens. however, Interested inthese aubjecta, are invited to be pre-aen- t.
Bupervlaor R. F. Balthfi, of the A.amo National Forest, has announcedthat Aldo Leopold, who ia In chargeof the gama and Ash work of tha Dis-
trict Forester Office, at Albuquerque, will (Iva an illustrated public lecturashortly, tha date to be announced later,tn Carlsbad, on "The Wild Game of
" ,New Mexico". The lecture will be U-- '''
lustra ted by many beautiful coloredlantern slides of wild anímala andbirds in their native haunts. Therewill ha no chares for admission andeverybody Is invited, Inoluding ladies
nd children.
Mr. Leopold represents the UnitedfiUteo Forest Service and also theAlbuquerque Game Protection Asmo-elatio- n
of which he Is Secretary. Hehaa been closely Identified with themovement for better game protectionwhich has of lata made (Treat stridesin New Mexico, and Is (riving this lec-
ture in Alamogordo In order to placebefore our citizens the aims and ob--
. Jacte of the irame protection move-f- Jmenu and to explain the necessity forimmediate and decisiva action to savethe game supply of the state. Mr.Leo-pol-d
lectured last week at Silver Cityunder the auspices of the Southwes-tern New Mexico's Sportsmen's Asso-ciation, and proceeds from there withSupervisor Balthls to the Guadalupemountains to lay out plana for pro-tecting the remnant of mountain sheepfound there. He will then iro to Roe-we- ll
and Carlsbad to (rive lecturesnd- - confer with Pecos valley sporta-me-n.
This lectura ought to be of interestnot only to sportsmen, but also to local stockmen and business men, Inas-much as Mr. Leopold will discuss indetail tha proposed National Game
Ua, Refuge in tha Guadalupe mountains,"T tha principal object of which will be
to save the remnant of mountain aheepMr. Leopold holda the opinion thatthese sheep, if they can be saved fromextinction, can be developed Into oneof tha moat valuable resources of thispart of tft átate. Tkay ara tha solaremnant of a bow almost extinctpedes, ha Dtatea, and if they have a
chanca te increase ta tha point whereman making trip to their range
would have a god chanca of seeingthem, people would coma from all overtha country just for a look at them.Mountain aheep are acknowledged tobe tha Anee, of all gama animals, andtha mountain sheep of tha Guadalupes
ra no exception to this rula,a-- Mr. Leopold states that tha Gamef Protectiv Associations now organised
at Taos, Santa Fa, Albuquerque, Mag- -
dalena and Silver City ara Intenselyi interested in the Guadalupe sheep, and
f
ra going to insist that tha law pro-tecting them be absolutely and rigidlyenforced. In this they are naturallydesirious of tha full cooperation oftheir fellow clUtens in tha Alamogordoregion. It ia pointed out that theseassociations have already made one
' vary effective move toward thaof thee sheep In .persuading
i Mia Federal government to send trap' per to the Guadalupe country to ex- -'
terminate the mountain lions, whichheretofore have been very destructivathere, not only to the Mountain sheepbut also to local livestock.
Supervisor Balthia and Mr. Leopoldpent yesterday in Cloudcroft giving
public lecture there laat night. Kla reported that there was a largeaudience and that considerable inter-est was aroused.
Local Forest Oflloers have submittedreports showing that a total of b,deer and 61 turkey were killed byhunters in the Alamo National Forest
uring the open season of 11)16. Mr.aopold expiessea the opinion that
these figures, even though very appro-ximately coirect, indicate an alarmingscarcity of game. An ace of almoat
million aerea like the Alamo Forestught to yield twenty times that num-
ber of killabla anímala each year, heaays, and the fact that it does not,
how that tha breeding stock mustbo restored before the full value f.fur local fame resources can be de-
veloped. He point aut that T.000people vtaitCloudaroft and other polct
in tha Forest each year, and thatreally adequate game supply wouldbring larga proportion of these peo-
ple back each fall on hunting trips.Really rood hunting would bring pro-bably $25,000 into the region eachyear, he says. And the only way tonet really good hunting Is for thepeople to Join actively and aggressive-ly in vigorous campaign to enforcethe game law, exterminate predatoryanimals, and educate the entire publicto a realisation of what game is real-ly worth.

A NOTABLE TRIBUTE.
Shortly after the opening of con-- 1
gres a 640 acre tockraising home- -slead bill waa Introduced in the house. It wa referred to the Secretary of,the Interior for examination and re-port, and on December 15, First As-
sistant Secretary Jone made a reporton the bill which the committee on..pu,,ic ,,nd C,U .xh.utive, de- -tailed, and very instructive report, heartily and earnestly recommendingthe passage of tha bill as soon as pos-sible.
This is the same bill that passedthe house on January 18, 11)15, butfailed of consideration in the senate.
In ita favorable reoort of tha billto tha house on the 11th of this month, the committee on public lands paysthis notable tribute to the work ofHon. H. B. Ferguison when he waa Intha last congress.
"The bill Is the result of the jointefforts of the committee and tha In-
terior department Several of thawestern members of the committeehave for two or three years been es-pecially active in support of thi mea-
sure. Congressman I-- ergusson.of NewMexico (smre deceased) wa at thattime the author of tha bill that waa !
considered by the committee. He devoted an Immense amount of time, anerirv. and Dainstakinir service to thehearing and preparation
.of the data
M a. ma estin support of uils mil. ills wnoieheart waa in the measure, and whenthia bill is enacted into law the entirewest will owe a debt of gratitude toHarvey B. Fergusson. Ha reported thabill out for tha committee May 6,1!14."
v
The tribute of th committee to thework of both Mr. Jones and Mr. Fer-gusson in behalf of this measur I
not only creditable to the people ofNew Mexico whose favored sons theyhave been for many years, but it ispeculiarly pleasurable to the editor ofthe Eagle, for this reason.
In the Fergusson-llernande- s cam-paign in 1014, he elaborated in hiscampaign talks on the great benefitsthis measure promised to the massesof small stork-raise- and farmers inthe state. He called into action ev-ery ounce of reserve fore In pointingout th great work Mr. Jones wasdoing aa Assistant Secretary to mod-
ify th rule of tha department thatwar restrictivo in their effects inthe use of th public domain, andobstructiva to settlers around th var-ios Indian reservations and to hisaid in restoring to th public .domainand free pasturage many thousands ofacre of lands from thaforest reserves.
He waxed as eloquent aa In himlaid in recalling to the people thatmonument to Mr. Fergusson's loyaltyand ability as a public servant, thaFergusson act, giving the territorythat million aeree of land for publicschools, and then he pointed to thotwin monument Mr. Fergusson was er-
ecting and would complete if theywould return him to congress.
Hut it waa not in the atari that hieye ihould see the day whereuntohe hsd sent his splendid labors forthis beneficial measure. Others arecompleting the work his hands foundlo do iq life, and now that he sleepsthe sleep of the
class, they arnot forgetting a juat tribute to hisworth in that "the entire west willowe a debt of gratitude" to him.
Yea, verily, men's works do followthem I
Antony said; "the evil that men dolives after them, the good is oft in-
terred with their bones." Not sowith Mr, Fergusson in thia behalf.Countless generations yet unborn willenjoy beneficence of the Fergusson act,and of th stock-raisin- g homesteadbill which h initiated and fathered al-
most to th statute book. .
And Mr. Jones by reason of largoropportunities, is surpassing Mr. Fergusson in results for the benefit ofthe people of his slate and the weakIt will be a pleasur to recount themin detail as Unie passes.
Verily tha people of New Mexicohav pride in such clean and retultfulsons as Fergusson and Jones. Theyar not ng-t- r statesman santa tEagle.

THE GERMANS BRING CAP-TURED ENGLISH LINER
INTO NEW YORK HARBOR.

Newport News, Vs., Feb 1 With thsGerman naval ansian flutering boldly from ths stern and In charge of a '
German prisa crew, th British SouthAfrican liner Appam, given up for,Inst, took refuge in Hampton Roadthis morning with ths story of seven '
vessels destroyed by German searaid- -'
era on tn African coast. .
Ths Appam was captured off thCanary Islands, on January 16 bv aGerman raider, four days after shehad sailed from Dakar, British West,Africa for Plymouth, England.
Lieutenant Here, of the Germannavy, placed on the Appam when shewas captured, brought in the prize, '
eluding the cordon of British cruisers '
across the Atlantic and adding to thehistoric chapter of German exploitat sea, a chapter to rank with the ad-ventures of the Dresden, Karlsruhe,Print Eilel Friedrich, .t ard K:onI'rinr. W i I helm.
Whether the raptor wan a 'ierniunIJ boat or a hitherto unreported (i"r-ma- n
auxiliury cruiser is undetermin-ed. From what was learned by some,of the ollicials who bonnled the Ap-pam, it is believed that some steam- -er, armed as a German auxiliary, raiding shipping off the Africancoast, took the British liner and putthe prixe crew aboard. This view issupported by the fact that a Mulnna-riii- o
could hahrdly have spared a lieu-tenant and such a larg crew to aprlx.
There were a total of 451 personsaboard ths ship, including ths sur-viving member of the crew of (evenother ship sunk by the raider which:captured th Appam, and twentyGerman civilian who were being!transported from Africa to England, I
to be placed in detention campa. Thepersons on board the vessel, were'listed a follow: Original member j
of crew, 165: original passengers.116; German prisoners, bound forBritish detention camps, 20; survi-vors of ship dsstroysd 138; prixecrew, TA
A. larg percentage of the numberon board are women and children, andit la said several high colonial olllc- -'
jala who were returning to Englandfront Africa, There are also onboard the captured four wounded '
sailor who were taken from one ofthe sunken ships which resisted cap-- ,ture and was shelled.
The passengers and captured crewslined the rails of the craft as she layabout a quurler of a mile oil tnc OldPoint dock, and appeared to vinco1groat interest in the hurried develop-ments following the unhei allied ar-rival of Hie ship in Hampton itiiuds.
According to the informuiioued from tlioke who had talked withLieutenant Kerg, in chuige of theprixe crew, the liner was cuptuiedwithout show of resistance on Jan- -'
