The late Sri. G. R. Govindarajulu, Founder of GRG Trust, following the

footsteps of his illustrious parents, started a high school for girls in 1956 in

Peelamedu, Coimbatore. It had a growing popularity in this area and it was the

earnest desire of all the distinguished visitors and the public that the school should

blossom into a full-fledged college for women. Thus PSGR Krishnammal College

for Women was started on 28th June 1963 under the auspices of the GRG Trust,

with Sri G.R. Govindarajulu as Founder Trustee and Smt. Chandrakanthi

Govindarajulu as Founder Correspondent of the College.

Affiliated to Bharathiar University, the college is situated in a beautiful campus. Over a period of 52 years it has grown into a full-fledged first grade post graduate-research institution with multi storied buildings, well equipped laboratories, an excellent ever growing library with a good collection of books, National & International Journals and with an extensive well maintained play ground. The college offers 12 UG and 4 PG Courses under the aided scheme, 19 UG, 7 PG, 3 PG Diploma and 3 Certificate Courses under the unaided scheme and M.Phil and Ph.D. programmes in 11 disciplines. Student enrolment is around 6500.

To ensure quality enhancement and sustenance and to make quality an inherent aspect of the institution, the Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC) was constituted in January 2004. IQAC functions as a nodal center for initiating quality measures in various facets of institutional activities. Heads of Departments and the Co-ordinators of all the service wings are its members. The cell is concerned with setting the targets for every academic year, ensuring that activities take place as planned by comparing the actual performance with the targets set.

Due to the untiring efforts of the management and munificent support of the founders Smt. & Sri. G.R. Govindarajulu and their family members, the college in its second year (1964) of its inception was upgraded to a First Grade college. This is the first women's college in this area to start M.A Literature in 1969, B.Com. in 1970 and B.B.M. in 1987, exclusively for women. Another pioneering initiative at the state level is the starting of MBA course exclusively for women during 1993-94 under the banner of G.R. Govindarajulu School of Management Studies.

With the twin advantage of being the leading academic unit of Bharathiar

University and effective governance by the benevolent management, the

college stands to gain the all round appreciation of all its stakeholders.

Autonomy in 2004, ISO 9001: 2000 certification in March 2007,

Reaccreditation with 'A' grade by NAAC (Third cycle with CGPA 3.58 in Feb

2014). ISO 9001:2008 certification in March 2010, have been the modest but

reaffirming assurances in the vertical climb of the institution towards the

pinnacle of excellence. Department of Botany has been elevated to the status

of DST-FIST sponsored in the year 2009. In 2011 the college was awarded

College with Potential for Excellence status by UGC. College level recognition

by DST-FIST in the year 2012 is a value addition. This was followed by a

celebrated elevation for science departments with the inclusion under the 'Star

Status Scheme' of the DBT in the year 2012. In the post golden jubilee year,

the institution has entered into new ventures with UGC sanctioning skill

enhancing programmes through B.Voc (in two disciplines) and a Community

College in 2014. A Rural Women Technology Park (DST-Sponsored) has

been launched at Pillaiappampalayam, Annur Taluk to empower women in

rural areas through technology transfer and entrepreneurship.

UGC – SPONSORED B.Voc. DEGREE PROGRAMMES

The University Grants Commission (UGC) has launched a scheme on skill

development based higher education as part of College/University education,

leading to Bachelor of Vocation (B.Voc.) Degree with multiple exits such as

Diploma/Advanced Diploma under the National Skill Qualification Framework

(NSQF). The B.Voc. programme is focused on Universities and Colleges

providing undergraduate studies which would also incorporate specific job

roles and their National Occupational Standards (NOSs) along with broad

general education. This would enable the graduates completing B.Voc. to

make a meaningful participation in accelerating India's economy by gaining

appropriate employment, becoming entrepreneurs and creating appropriate

knowledge. PSGR Krishnammal College for Women has taken a new skill

development initiative in the year 2014-15 by introducing B.Voc aided degree

programmes sponsored by UGC. Courses Offered

The Community College is accessible to a large number of individuals of

the community, offers low cost and high quality education locally, that

PSGR KRISHNAMMAL VOCATIONAL TRAINING CENTRE

PSGR Krishnammal Vocational Training Centre has been

instituted in the campus in the year 2013, registered with the

Directorate General of Employment and Training, Ministry of

Labour and Employment, Govt. of India, New Delhi. Objectives

The objectives of the Vocational Training Centre is:

To provide vocational training for the youth and thereby to

improve their employability. To build capacity in the area of development of competency

standards, course curricula, learning material and

assessment standards in the country. Target Group

Preference given to:

Women students who are from rural background First generation students coming for higher education Economically backward Minorities and SC/ST communities

Issue of Certificates

On completion of the Programme, the certificate will be issued by

Rules of Admission / Withdrawal 1. Candidates for admission to the degree class should have passed the XII

Standard or Pre - Degree examination or its equivalent declared eligible

by the Bharathiar University for admission to the degree course. 2. Students who are found to have obtained admission by false

representations will be dismissed with forfeiture of all fees paid. 3. No student will be enrolled or permitted to attend classes until

the fees due from her has been paid. 4. A student admitted after the beginning of a term should pay the

whole fees for the term even if she has paid the fees in some

other college, and it is left to the discretion of the principal to

extend any concession in deserving cases. 5. If a student discontinues her study, a transfer certificate will be

issued on request, with a payment of Rs. 5, provided, she

applies for the same not later than the fifth working day of the

succeeding term after leaving the college. 6. If a student leaves the college at the end of an academic year,

she is entitled to receive the attendance certificate required by

the university if she applies for it.

Rules of Discipline 1. Students should not use cell phones during class hours. 2. Day scholars using two wheelers should wear helmet, failing which

they will not be permitted to park their vehicles inside the campus. 3. Students are directed to look up the notice boards every day 4. Scribbling on the walls, desks or any other kind of damage to

college property is strictly prohibited. Students responsible for

such damages will be severely punished. 46

Rules of Attendance 1. No student may absent herself from the college without assigning proper

reasons. Application for leave must be handed over to the Principal and it

should be countersigned by the HOD concerned. When the absence is due

to unforeseen causes, an application for leave must be submitted as early

as possible, and in no case later than the first day of return to the college.

The leave applied for, in time will ordinarily be granted when proper

reasons are given but in case of sickness extending for more than three

days, submission of a medical certificate is obligatory. 2. If a student absents herself for a week without submitting a

leave application, her name may be struck off the rolls unless

she shows that her failure to obtain leave was unavoidable. 3. A student who is absent for any part of the morning/afternoon

session will be considered absent for half-a-day unless the

Principal is satisfied with the reasons given for the absence. 4. One day absence without leave letter will be considered as two

days of absence unless the Principal is satisfied with the reasons

given for the absence and grants leave. 75% attendance for each

course paper is the minimum eligibility to sit for the ESE. 5. Each Student has to select an extra-curricular activity - Physical

Education / NCC / NSS / YINET / YRC / ROTARACT/ ECO

WATCH / Yoga Club. 6. Terminal examination will ordinarily be held at the end of each semester.

Except in very special cases, students will not be allowed to absent

themselves for these examinations. Two Continuous Assessment (CA)

tests and a Model Examination will be conducted for each course in every

semester. Tentative dates are provided in the calendar. Reports of each

student will be available at the end of every semester on our website.

are open to all the staff and students of the Institute. The libraries render service by providing quality magazines,

journals and newspapers. The Libraries will be kept open from 7.30 am to 6.00 pm on all

working days. Business hours (Both Issue and Return): 8.00 am to 5.45 pm. All the users are required to scan their ID card at the entrance

of the libraries and once again scan their ID at the time of

leaving the libraries. ID card is a must for all transactions. No personal belongings are permitted inside the libraries. Mobile phones and other devices should be in silent mode. Library books should be handled with utmost care. Marking of any

kind of scribbling on pages or folding of pages is strictly

prohibited. Mishandling or damage to the books will invite penalty. If any book issued by the libraries is lost or misplaced, the concerned

borrower will need to replace the same edition of the book. Failure to

replace will invite penalty at twice the cost of the book. Reference books, journals, back volumes, project reports etc,

will not be issued to any users. Laptops may be used inside the libraries (without any audio). Users

are allowed to take the photocopies of the required articles. 58

Users are permitted to take printouts of the required online resources. College Bus The college bus will ply during scheduled time to provide

transport facilities to the hostel students. Canteen The canteen provides refreshments and noon - meals at a subsidized rate. Tutorial System Every student on the college roll is assigned to the care of a staff

member whom she can consult on matters that requires advice. Co-curricular activities

The associations organize various activities to bring out the talents

and skills of the students. Several symposia / seminars are also arranged

in which research papers / papers on current topics, are presented by

students and faculty members. Eminent persons are also invited to

deliver lectures to enrich the academic knowledge of students. 57

National Service Scheme (2 Units) NSS volunteers are rendering creditable services in the adopted

villages, orphanages, old age homes, NGO's & non–NGO's, etc by

conducting adult literacy classes, computer literacy programmes,

common medical camps, blood donation programmes, trekking

programmes, AIDS awareness and need based activities. They will

also participate in the Republic Day camp to be held at New Delhi.

Many volunteers have received State and National Awards so far. National Cadet Corps NCC is the pride of the college and fuctions effectively with Army

and Air Wing. Cadets represent All India Republic Day camp, All

India Thal Sainik camp and All India Vayu Sainik camp regularly. Voluntary Blood Donation Club This club is actively engaged in creating awareness regarding

blood donation. Youth Red Cross This unit aims at inculcating awareness in health and hygiene

and disaster management programmes among the youth. They

also involve in creating awareness about first aid, organize

blood donation programmes, co-ordinate the Deaf Project, visit

orphanages and old age homes. Rotaract Club The club offers the students an opportunity to develop leadership

qualities that is so vital for the present day youth. It prepares them

to meet the challenges of the present day world with confidence. It

also instills in them a sense of social responsibility which is the

need of the hour through various projects. Eco Watch Club The members of the club are taken on eco trips to places in the

Niligiri Biosphere Reserve. They get a chance to encounter the

fauna and flora there. The different programmes and

competitions conducted in the club help the members to

inculcate awareness about nature and its conservation. 58

Consumer Club Consumer club of our college is taking all efforts to create awareness

to keep pace with new and descriptive marketing techniques,

lecturers, outreach programmes, etc with the help of voluntary

consumer organizations, civil supplies and consumer production

department of Tamil Nadu on the exploitative features of traders,

manufacturers are conducted. Besides guiding the students on the

need and how to safe guard themselves against such producers. Entrepreneurship Cell The College is enjoying the status of being a member of NEN

(National Entrepreneurship Network) which aims at creating and

supporting India's largest entrepreneurial community. The

college has been encouraging, educating and facilitating

member students to become entrepreneurs through NEN –

entrepreneurship programmes and activities. Yoga Club Students participate in yoga and health awareness programmes,

organize and participate in yoga competitions, workshops,

seminars, national integration programmes and a project of SDM

(Stop Diabetes Movement) under AYUSH, Ministry of Health and

Family Welfare, Government of India. SDM is a collective effort to

prevent India from becoming the world capital of Diabetes Mellitus

and aim to make India the world leader in mitigating the sufferings

of patients all over the country and as well as the world.

Kavyabharathi is exclusively designed for female students. This

moulded package creates and enriches moral values, developing,

strengthening and maintaining a full- fledged interpersonal

relationship and washes out unintended negative distractions. Gymnasium A well equipped gymnasium is installed for the students and

staff to maintain fitness, in keeping with the adage “A sound mind in a sound body.” Centre for Women's Studies The UGC sponsored Centre for Women's Studies (Phase II) acts as a

catalyst for promoting, strengthening and networking Women's

Studies in the college through teaching, research, fieldwork and

extension activities. The Centre networks with individuals and

organizations to encourage policies, practices and structures in

services which ensure to have a society in which, women are

recognized as valued, active and contributing participants. Gandhian Studies Centre The centre aims to impart the Gandhian vision of total upliftment of

the underprivileged rural women to enable them to live with human

dignity and to realize their identity. Gandhian Studies Centre acts

as a nodal centre to inculcate Gandhian thoughts and principles

among the younger generation to make them good citizens of

India and also to deliver multifaceted functions like teaching,

extension, advocacy, networking, documentation and research. Dr.Ambedkar Studies Centre The Centre aims to incorporate Dr. Ambedkar's thought and to

create awareness in students about their rights and promote

women empowerment through higher education. It also

envisages to widen into a centre for national integration of

students and helps to develop an all India perspective. Centre for Career Development The focused vision of this center is to provide social justice to

narrow down the gap of students belonging to SC/ST, OBC,

minorities, physically challenged, etc and to develop them socially

and educationally competent. This center promotes not only in

higher education but helps students to choose teaching as their

career and to get gainful employment in state services, central

services or equivalent positions in the private sector by organizing

coaching classes with the assistance of subject experts and

resource persons both from the institution and out sourcing. ACS Coaching Centre To encourage and motivate the students to become professionals, our

college is conducting coaching classes for ACS from the academic year

2009-2010 onwards. The regular classes are arranged from 10:00 am to

12:00 pm on all working days. Also classes are arranged on

holidays whenever necessary. Classes are arranged for all

three levels viz Foundation, Executive and Professional.

Resource persons with rich experience from industry,

profession and academics are appointed to handle classes.

Both male and female candidates from outside can also enroll. CA Coaching Centre Our college is accredited by the Institute of Chartered Accountants

of India for conducting coaching classes for CA-CPT from the

academic year 2009-10. The classes for Self-Financing students

are scheduled from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm on all week days and

from 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm for aided students. ICWA Coaching Centre Our college is accredited by the Institute of Cost and

Management Accountants of India for conducting coaching

classes for ICWA Foundation and Intermediate from the

academic year 2012-13. The classes for Self-Financing

students are scheduled from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm on all week

days and from 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm for aided students. Remedial Coaching Scheme UGC sponsored remedial coaching at under graduate and post

graduate level for (i) SC/ST students and (ii) students belonging to

minority communities is provided mainly to improve the academic

skills, linguistic proficiency and level of comprehension. Regional Centre in Geriatric Care Our Institution is recognized as a “Regional Centre in Geriatric Care” by National Institute of Social Defence, New Delhi, an autonomous body of

Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment. The Regional Centre in

Geriatric Care conducts various short term, long term training

programmes including three months, six months training in old age care

(every year from the month of November to March) and sensitisation

programmes to bridge inter-generational gap and on old age care.

Placement is provided to students who have completed long term course

in old age home, hospitals and home care units etc. This centre works for

Government schemes on “Inclusiveness with equal access to all”. GRG – Innovation & Entrepreneurship Development Centre (GRG-IEDC)63Innovation & Entrepreneurship Development Centre

Entrepreneurship Development Board (NSTEDB) which comes under

Department of Science & Technology (DST), Govt. of India was

established in August 2009.The Centre intends to inculcate a spirit of

entrepreneurship and business leadership among the students. The

main objective of the centre is to impart soft skills, trade specific skills

and entrepreneurship training & empowerment of women through

financial independence. Entrepreneurship Awareness Camps (EAC)

is conducted on a regular basis by the IEDC of the college. The Entrepreneurship Cell (E-Cell) has been started in the college which also

encourages, educates and facilitates students who become members to turn

out to be entrepreneurs through its entrepreneurial activities and

programmes. Campus Company an entrepreneurial venture “Magical Shades” started by the students within the campus provide opportunities for the

students to develop entrepreneurial knowledge and skills through personal

experience of establishing, managing, and operating a venture. A-View Facility Amrita Virtual Interactive E-learning World (A –View) is a frame work

that provides a rich interactive social environment for e-learning in

educational corporate, entertainment and other applications. A – View

is a highly compact and flexible software with an objective to provide a

platform for sharing values, resources and knowledge of excellent

teachers from all over the world to the students through EDUSAT

network/internet. The A-View platform involves multiple displays which

will give students unhindered and uninterrupted view of slides, white

board and other multimedia materials apart from teachers' audio /

video. The sessions are recorded and indexed so that it is available to

the students for later reference. My Klassroom A Social learning platform addresses the needs of the learner through

exposure to both students and faculty. PSGR Krishnammal College for Women Alumni Association The Alumni Association of the college acts as a powerful tool in the

development of the college and its student community. It awards gold

medals to the best outgoing students and prizes to the rank holders. It

provides service in the field of placement too. It provides Scholarship to

sports students and funds research projects also it has signed up with

Alma Connect a Platform to connect, and Leverage Alumni Network. College Newsletter The college publishes the IQAC Newsletter at the end of each

academic year to disseminate campus activities and quality

enhancement strategies practiced by the Institution. Research Publications The Manual Journal Prerana and Advances in Applied Research

are published from within the campus. 'Advances in Applied

Research' is a Department of Science and Technology (DST)

recognized peer reviewed, registered, biannual online scientific

research journal, published for the eighth year in succession with

National Academy of Agricultural Sciences (NAAS) Rating of 2.98. 63

GRG Hostel

The hostel is situated in a separate campus, nearly 2 kilometers away

from the college. It accommodates more than 1000 members (students &

teachers). The hostel is under the direct control of the Secretary who is its

Chief Warden. She is vested with powers to interpret and enforce the

rules and is assisted by a warden. The warden guides the deputy

wardens and matrons in the day today administration. The approval of the

chief warden will be required for creating or changing the rules.

Hostel Rules 1. Students are not allowed to go out of the hostel without the

written permission of the warden.

2. No student shall stay outside the hostel for the night without

the written permission from the parent or guardian.

3. A student is permitted to go home only on 'General

Permission' declared twice a month. Students must return to

the hostel on Sundays before 6.00 pm. 4. Hostel students shall not absent themselves from the college

without submitting leave letters countersigned by the warden. 5. Visitors are permitted to meet the inmates on Saturdays, Sundays and

national holidays between 10.00 am to 5.30 pm. Visitors must register

their name and furnish relevant details in the visitors register. 6. Members shall not disturb others and shall in no way

interfere with the work of other inmates.

7. Study hours (7.30 pm. to 10.15 pm) must be strictly observed

and as soon as the silence hours is struck they shall be at their

studies. Students must remain in their respective rooms during

these hours and switch off the lights by 10.30 pm. 8. Misconduct or breach of hostel rules renders the offender liable to

fine or suspension or dismissal from both the hostel and college.

9. Members shall not issue any order to the hostel servants

and shall not interfere with their work.

10. Mis-behaviour on the part of the servants and residents shall be

reported to the deputy warden immediately with all particulars.

The members are not permitted to take any direct measures. 64

11. Members or their guests shall not enter the kitchen without

permission.

12. The chief warden may refuse admission to the hostel or expel

from the hostel any member without assigning any reason. 13. Members of the hostel who want to leave the hostel must

give a written notice of their intention at least a week before

the date of leaving. 14. Students are not allowed to go out for any reason after

punching the attendance.

15. Day scholars taking food without token should pay Rs.500/-

as fine. The hosteler accompanying the day scholar involved

in such incident should also pay Rs.500/- as fine. 16. The students must enter the details in the outgoing register

while going out of the campus.

17. Wards are instructed to fillup “IN” time only after returning from the outings.

18. Cell phones are permitted only inside the rooms and not in

common areas.

19. Students are instructed to punch the attendance before going

out in case of general permission and special permission. 20. Students who are vacating in between should pay the administrative

charges of the remaining months for that academic year. 21. Students should stay in their allotted rooms. If they stay in

others rooms they should pay a fine of Rs 100/- for each day. 22. Students are advised to get prior permission from the

HOI/HOD/ Warden to go out from the college for reasons such

as industry visit, project work, extra classes, sponsorship, etc. 23. Students who are taking leave for more than three days with

permission will be eligible to get mess reduction. But they should

pay the administration charges for the entire leave period.
