BREAD REVIEW 2013-14(ANNUAL REPORT)

PROGRAMS FOR 2014-2015

BREAD Society was established 25 years ago in August 1989. For two decades, it was engaged in awarding scholarships of financial assistance for higher education to meritorious underprivileged students, especially from rural areas. During the last five years it has established 551 Children's Libraries in govt. high schools to inculcate reading habit among high school students as govt. is supporting higher education with tuition fee waiver and monthly maintenance scholarships.

Equally importantly, its focus is on monitoring the performance of the libraries it has established. In 2014-15, it will establish 80 new libraries by July 2014 and keep 20 sets of books in readiness.

BREAD Society selects schools in an unbiased manner by setting up Children's Libraries in govt. high schools which secure 6 or more National Means cum Merit Scholarships (NMMS) in a year. NMMS Test is held in 8th standard for govt. and aided high school children. Children selected are awarded Rs. 6,000 per annum for four years from 9th standard till completion of Intermediate. Many Head Masters and teachers help in preparing the children for the NMMS Test conducting special coaching classes, with apparently no benefit to them. BREAD Society shows its appreciation of good work done by HMs and teachers responsible for securing NMMS awards by honouring them. They, in turn, encourage and motivate students to read books. Donors have also the option to choose govt. high schools of their choice to establish BREAD Children's libraries.

BREAD Library has 650 books worth Rs. 21,500 and a steel book case with four hanging glass doors worth Rs. 7,000. Labour, packing and forwarding charges cost about Rs. 1,500. However, BREAD Society spends about Rs. 22,000 to establish a library. Donation to establish a library is Rs. 25,000 from individuals and Rs. 30,000 from corporates. Balance amount is meant for Corpus. Interest on Corpus is for awarding prizes to students for best write-ups on books read by them.

BREAD Society will replenish each of the existing 551 Libraries with 100 books, costing Rs. 2,000 during the next two years in order to sustain the interest of students. It will seek a contribution of Rs. 4,000 for each library from its regular donors to be utilized during next two years.

BREAD Society awards valuable prizes and Certificates of Excellence to students with best write-ups. Selected best write-ups will be published in book form and distributed to all library schools to motivate other students to do write-ups. Published book will also be put on website for all to view.

The Society will also issue Certificates of Appreciation to voluntary student librarians.

BREAD Society has developed systems and processes for effective implementation of library program. It lays emphasis on ensuring continuity through students managing libraries. It does not burdening HMs and library teachers with extra work.

It will monitor the performance of libraries through volunteers who will contact HM or library teacher and some students of every school twice or thrice in a year on telephone. Volunteers will maintain a record of responses. Data collected will be analysed. District Coordinators will visit some of the schools to authenticate the data collected.

BREAD completes now 25 years of dedicated services fitting to its name. I thought of Basic Research in Education and Development (BREAD) as its name at the outset of initiating the very idea. For, I believed that education should go beyond and linked to development, enrich and empower people. That becomes possible only when children are enabled with opportunities to know more about fundamentals of the country which may or may not be part of academic pursuit at school level.

I am immensely gratified that BREAD has gone much beyond and has even set examples. It remained truly voluntary without depending on any one source for its drive and momentum. It operated altogether outside the Government but trying to infuse concerns and capabilities into school going children in a competitive spirit. In going about in this regard, it would not be an exaggeration to say that there are no parallels to BREAD.

So many stalwarts in their respective field enriched BREAD and guided it over these years. BREAD benefited from such pioneers as Dr. Chitturi Ratnam, founder of North South Foundation (USA), Mr. Moturu Siva Ram Prasad, eminent Chartered Accountant, Dr P M Bhargava, national Scientist, Mr. K. Padmanabhaiah, former Home Secretary of .India, Mr.M Narasimhappa, former Chief Commissioner of Income Tax (Pune) and Mr. D. Satyanarayana Rao, formerly M D of Tata Projects. Now it has the benefit of Justice Dr P C Rao, former Advisor to three Prime Ministers, former Secretary of Law and presently Judge in the International Court, as President and Dr. K. Ramachandra Murthy as Vice President of BREAD. Like me, Justice Dr. P C Rao too was sensitized by local -village library during early school going years.

The successful flagship activity BREAD, initiated 25 years ago, was scholarship to meritorious children who otherwise could not afford to pursue higher education. In 20 years 4,000 children availed and benefited. It was temporarily deferred as the State Government has taken the onus of ensuring all students get financial support. The next best activity BREAD rightly adopted is Children Library with specially selected books for promoting holistic outlook and social concerns and prompt creative talents of school children. BREAD concept of Children Library is much more than making available books. It includes enabling children bring out their creativities, acquire community spirit and larger societal concern and also articulative skills.

BREAD never campaigned for funds. It is unique approach, relevance of its priorities and efficacy of its operations is what attracted partners in its endeavor of empowering. A good example is Mr. Kanta Rao, a self-made entrepreneur of Bangalore, who on his own knowing from website extended impressive support to BREAD. He was motivated by his father's concern for education.

It's Silver Jubilee Year of BREAD!

The idea of BREAD Children Libraries in Government schools is very well received. Going by difference these libraries made in rejuvenating school education, it is being sought after by many more schools. In a unique gesture BREAD is honoring teachers of schools and awarding children for their initiatives. That is how I could say BREAD has now become a peoples' movement. But scaling up libraries alone is not the objective, the concern is to make these libraries a nucleus to unleash creative talents in children and drive them as active players of knowledge society. A million people in schools and at homes are already reached in all by these 550 BREAD libraries.

There may be only a few parallels in the country where a voluntary organization with such widely scattered ongoing activities at grassroots could operate with such meticulous discipline spending hardly two percent on overheads of all kind put together. The credit for consolidating BREAD goes to its truly spirited team of Governing Body supported by District Coordinators.

Transparency in the operations of BREAD is yet another unique virtue being maintained consistently over these 25 years. Everything and anything one should know or has anything to do with BREAD is on the finger tips on online. Provisions of Right to Information (RTI) Act are being followed more meticulously, pro-actively and in a suo-moto spirit.

There are some initiatives of BREAD which either had to be discontinued for one or other reason. These include, India's first Role Model Awards which BREAD give away in 2000 – Dr. N R Narayan Murthy of Infosys, Dr. Madhav Chavan of Pratham were among a dozen BREAD awardees. The Awards were discontinued as it was felt that costs of promoting was high and that money could be put to better use of the needy. Another idea was using local Cable TV channel to scale up tutorial classes. So that poor children too could gear up in a competitive environment. Yet another initiative to minimize school dropout rate was making elected reps in local panchayats as active players in local school operations. Also, the idea of imparting communication skills for school children continue to be a concern of BREAD but remained in an experimental phase. s

SECRETARY'S REPORTA REVIEW OF THE ACTIVITIES OF BREAD SOCIETY DURING 2013-14

1. Introduction:

Mission: Pick up bright but indigent students at the school level to help them

achieve their full potential so that the inherent human excellence is brought forth

for the good of the individual as well as the society and pool adequate resources

to administer them with dedication, efficiency and transparency.

2. Bread Children's Libraries:

a) BREAD Society has taken up the program of establishing BREAD Children's

Libraries in govt. schools from 2009-10. In the first two years, libraries were

established in schools indicated by donors or BREAD Society's district

coordinators where donors left the choice to the Society. Review of the

performance of libraries revealed that the selections could be improved upon as

some of the schools did not utilize the facilities provided. It was noticed that

many local coordinators did not visit the schools. It was also observed that

performance of library depended mainly on the Library in-charge and Head

Master.

b) Therefore, Governing Body decided to establish libraries from 2011-12 in

schools securing 6 or more National Means cum Merit Scholarships (NMMS) in a

year where the choice was left to it. Headmasters and teachers in such schools

gave intensive coaching to students for NMMS Test selflessly. BREAD Society has

also been establishing libraries in schools specified by donors. In all, it has

established 551 children's libraries during the last five years including 151

libraries established in 2013-14.

c) It has further decided to honouring headmasters and teachers of NMMS

schools and giving prizes to students for best write-ups on library books read by

them. It has also decided to focus its material and human resources on

monitoring the performance of libraries over the next two or three years to

create an impact.

to a tally of 746 mementoes and 701 shawls. Interaction with headmasters and

teachers at Workshops led to better understanding of processes and systems

evolved by us.

Secretary attended all but two functions, one due to the two functions at

Nizamabad and Nalgonda being held on the same day and other due to the very

short notice of the function held at Kakinada.

-14-

Main points that emerged from most Workshops are detailed below.

i) BREAD library books are useful for science projects helping students in NMMS

and other competitive exams.

ii) Students are encouraged to talk about books in Assembly, library period and to

have group discussions.

iii) In some schools govt. library books are also used observing the way BREAD

Library is utilized.

iv) Books are displayed on tables, stands, strings and racks where a separate

library room is available.

v) Govt. schools have a “Register for Lost Books” to write off books damaged or

lost. This makes it possible for BREAD Library schools to lend their school library

books through students as is done with BREAD library books.

vi) Best write-ups may be selected and published in a book form to be circulated

to all library schools.

5. Prizes for best write-ups:

Prizes of 1400 Dictionaries to students of 101 schools for best write-ups on books

read by them were handed over to headmasters at felicitation functions as also

Certificates of Appreciation, where possible. It means that 25% of the 400 library

schools established up to 2012-13 sent their recommendations for giving prizes.

This has resulted in other headmasters and teachers realising that their students

missed out on getting prizes either because students did not do write-ups or

schools did not send recommendations. Either way, this is likely to bring in an

improvement in students reading books and doing write-ups and claiming prizes

next year.

 6. Additional Books to Established Libraries:

Out of 600 books supplied till 2012-13 about 40 to 50 were English books. Mr.

Padmanabhaiah, our President suggested that each library school may be

provided with about 15% English books in view of the importance of English

language in securing jobs. Therefore, BREAD Society supplied 650 books to 151

newly established libraries in 2013-14 without reducing the number of Telugu

-15-

books. All 400 schools where libraries were set up earlier were supplied an

additional set of 30 English books to make up for the shortage of English books.

7. Issue Registers:

During the past four years, BREAD Society supplied one Issue Register with 400

pages to each library. All classes in the school were making entries in the same

register for issuing books. It was observed that if we supply separate Issue

Registers of 60 pages to each class, it would be easier for students to maintain

them. It will also be relatively easier to furnish class-wise data about number of

students borrowing books, number of books borrowed etc. Accordingly, schools

with strength of 600 were supplied 5 Issue Registers and those with larger

strength were supplied Issue registers in multiples of 5 for additional strengths of

600.

8. BREAD Student's Notebook:

BREAD Society gave a copy of Scholar's Notepad in English to each BREAD scholar

along with scholarship cheque. Subsequently in 2009-10, we distributed a

schoolbag, 6 exercise notebooks and one Student's Notebook in English and

Telugu to school children affected by floods in Kurnool, Mahaboobnagar, Guntur

and Krishna districts. Remaining copies of Student's Notebooks have been

supplied to the then established libraries. We have now supplied 10 copies of

Student's Notebook to each of the 550 schools by getting additional copies

printed. All additional material - Issue registers, sets of English books and

Student's Notebooks were supplied at felicitation functions in most cases. In

some cases where headmasters of library schools did not attend functions,

material was sent to the schools.

9. GiveIndia Listing:

We got listed with GiveIndia towards the end of March 2013. We have received

contributions through them for establishing 17 libraries up to the end of March

2014. We established 8 libraries with donations received up to the end of

December 2013. Remaining 9 Libraries will be established in June 2014. We have

also received small contributions adding up to Rs. 20,000 from GiveIndia towards

Corpus Fund from March 2013 till end of March 2014. In addition, we

-16-

participated in GiveIndia's “Income Tax Saving Challenge (ITSC) 2014” and

received prize money of over Rs.1.09 lakh out of which our own donors

contributed Rs. 0.39 lakh to GiveIndia, which was made good to them, leaving us

with a net surplus of Rs. 0.70 lakh. We received Rs. 5.53 lakh from our donors

through GiveIndia. Thus, total fund raised in a short period of one month of

February 11, 2014 to March 13, 2014 was Rs. 6.63 lakh.

Encouraged by good flow of funds from GiveIndia for setting up libraries, we have

created a second Donation Option to replenish libraries with 80 to 100 additional

books for existing libraries. This Option is for Rs.2,000.

Following declarations are made to meet GiveIndia's specific requirement for the

Annual Report.

1. Abridged financials (Balance Sheet, Income & Expenditure, Receipts &

Payments Account or Fund Flow Statement: Please see relevant pages in BREAD

Review 2013-14 (Annual Report).

voluntarily taken upon themselves to set up BREAD Society's Stall at Vijayawada

Book Exhibition 2014 including bearing all expenses except rent for the Stall

which they accepted at the insistence of Secretary, BREAD Society. They manned

the Stall throughout the duration from 2.00 P M to 9.00 P M from 1st to 12th

Donations to BREAD Society have picked up even though they were ona a

downward slide during the past few years. Reasons for improvement in

contributions may be attributed to contributions from Dr. Ashok Kache, Dr. Reddy

Laboratories Ltd and other donors, GiveIndia's contribution and our participation

in iGive ITSC 2014.

12. Administrative Expenses and Finances:

Administrative expenditure was Rs.0.45 lakh. The culture of volunteering

continues unabated with all its Governing Body Members and Special Invitees

travelling on their own to Hyderabad to attend Meetings. Our District

Coordinators travel to remotely located villages and put up with lot of personal

inconveniences. Success of BREAD Society can be largely attributed to its

voluntary spirit as travels are undertaken with intent to do work and not on some

pretext as happens sometimes where expenses are met by the organization.

Corpus Fund of the Society is now well over Rs.60 lakh. Impressed with our

performance in establishing libraries, Dr. Ashok Kache has donated over $ 23,000

in 2013-14 against his initial promise to donate $ 10,000 in a year. We have

received Rs. 39.64 lakh as donations. In addition, interest earned during the year

was Rs. 7.18 lakh. We spent Rs.38.79 lakh on various activities during the year.

13. Action Taken Report:

i) 151 Libraries have been set up as per decisions of the Governing Body in 2013-

14.

ii) Headmasters and teachers of all NMMS library schools have been felicitated.

iii) 1400 students of 101 schools have been given prizes and certificates for best

write-ups.

iv) 400 library schools established up to last year were given 30 additional English

books.

-19-

14. Dissemination of information to Donors:

Information about utilization of donations has been furnished to all sponsors and

donors. Each and every sponsor/donor has also been provided with an up to date

account of the donations and disbursals over the years. We have simultaneously

sought contributions for additional books to existing libraries from all donors

except those who have already contributed through ITSC 2014. Balance

donations at the end of 2013-14 remain only in respect of three sponsors which

are being utilized for setting up libraries in 2014-15. All sponsors and donors have

also been intimated about programs of 2014-15.

15. Database:

It would not have been possible to handle the volume and variety of work without

the support system created through the robust and versatile database. We are

able to generate all types of information be it with reference to donors, scholars,

donations, accounts, academic performances, educational institutions, Study

Centres, Children's Libraries etc. Database has been further modified to

incorporate information about prize-winning students, volunteer

librarians, donors replenishing books, certificates to students etc. Our database

created, modified from time to time and managed by Mr. Vidyasagar, our Vice-

President has been the single most important factor for the efficiency and

efficacy of our delivery system. Mr. Vidyasagar has redesigned the Database to

indicate the schools to which additional books are supplied with contributions

from such donors.

16. Publications:

BREAD Society has come out with its first quarterly electronic Newsletter in July

2006 and is bringing it out regularly in the first fortnight of every quarter. BREAD

REVIEW 2012-13, Student's Notebook in Telugu and Brochure of the Society are

the new publications. These publications were widely circulated to all concerned.

It is observed that postal addresses of most of our donors have changed over

time. We are receiving back many BREAD Review (Annual Report) books sent to

them. We will mail hard copies to donors, members etc. after receiving their

-20-

latest addresses. We may get fewer copies printed even though printing is done

free of any charges by M/S Mudrica Offset Printers, Vijayawada.

17. Website:

M/S Foxfire Pvt. Ltd. has recast our web content to Content Management System

(CMS). We are now able to make changes in the website on our own without

having to depend on an external Web Manager. M/S Foxfire is hosting it free of

cost.

18. Voluntary Services /Thanksgiving:

It has become a routine to recall names of people who have helped us in

executing our activities during the year and convey our grateful thanks to them.

This has been a hectic year with a very large number people helping us in

conducting Felicitation Functions at various Centres. I know that people who help

us voluntarily do not look forward to accolades from us. They do it for the love of

it. Hence, I will depart from the normal routine and thank one and all without

taking names, for fear of missing out some names.
