rB22 STRATA 150

The RB22 Strata 150 Multi Borer is based on an upgraded Robbins 53R, with a number of enhanced capabilities and technical improvements. Built in just four months at RUC Mining’s workshop in Kalgoorlie, it requires a power source able to deliver approximately 250 kVA at 1,000 volts.

rB25 STRATA 400

The RB25 Strata 400 is a game-changing machine – a combination drill design capable of completing blind boxholes to a length of 60 m at a diameter of 1.5 m, whilst also able to drill 3 m diameter conventional raises up to 100 m in length.

Fitting inside a 5 m x 5 m envelope, and driven by a single power pack, this combination delivers exceptional flexibility, together with ease of set up and pull down. With a peak power requirement of only 315 kVA, the RB25 Strata 400 makes it possible to create ventilation extensions and slot holes with a single machine.

rB05 & rB08 RobbinS 53R

Designed specifically as a multi boring unit, these are capable of drilling 1.5 m diameter blind boxholes to a length of 50 m. Based on the original Robbins unit, but extensively remodelled and improved by RUC Mining, they have recorded a total of over 4,000 m of blind boxhole boring at sites throughout Australia. Sled-mounted, these units will take around 250 kVA at peak load.

CoMPleTeD & CurrenT ConTrACTs

Since February 2011, the RUC Mining boxhole boring fleet has worked on a number of minesites, including:

Athena, Western Australia

Caves Rock, Western Australia

Flying Fox, Western Australia

Frogs Legs, Western Australia

King of the Hill, Western Australia

Kulthor, Queensland

Sandfire Degrussa, Western Australia

Sunrise Dam, Western Australia

Wallaby, Western Australia

Boxhole BoringWith safe boring techniques an imperative in underground mine development, boxhole boring provides a mechanised, non-entry solution for the excavation of stope slot rises, ore rises, through passes and ventilation passes.

Where access to the upper level is limited or not possible, the boxhole boring machine sits at the lower level, and a raise is bored upward. Cuttings fall under gravity and are deflected from the machine using a muck chute.

RUC Mining has a range of drills available to complete boxhole boring safely and quickly, with a capability of up to 50 m in length and 1.5 m in diameter. Boring can be completed with or without a pre-drilled pilot hole, either vertically or inclined down to 45° from the vertical.

Because of RUC Mining’s total commitment to engineering excellence, clients can enjoy

the quality and schedule benefits that come from a project

that is ‘right first time’.

Large excavationsThe successful installation of static underground equipment such as crushers, rockbreakers, conveyors and associated storage areas depends principally on the quality of the preceding excavation work and the related ground support. Unlike advancing a decline for truck haulage, large excavations are civil engineering projects, and require the same disciplines that pertain to sophisticated above ground constructions.

Because of the company’s total commitment to engineering excellence, RUC Mining has been awarded a number of large projects within Australia and overseas. Excavations have been created for the installation of facilities such as crushing stations, ore bins, loading stations, hoists, workshops and pumping stations.

Prior to excavation, the company reviews the design specifications to select the correct choice of technique, whether handheld or mechanised, to meet the required excavation tolerances.

RUC Mining understands that to ensure subsequent construction activities progress without delay, all work must be completed to a high degree of accuracy. Design tolerances are invariably tight, so supervisors demand rigorous adherence to the design plan, and constantly survey and review operations. Combined with the specialist ground support expertise that RUC Mining brings to a project, the end product achieves full compliance to all specifications. It means that clients can enjoy the quality and schedule benefits that come from a project that is ‘right first time’.

newmont Callie

Located on Aboriginal freehold land in the remote Tanami Desert of the Northern Territory, mining for gold began in the region in the early 1900s. By 2010, production from the Callie underground operation at Dead Bullock Soak was generating almost 250,000 oz of gold per annum, with processing taking place at Granite’s Mill, 40 km to the east.

Assessing remaining reserves at over two million ounces, Newmont announced a decision to invest $450 million on the Tanami shaft project to reduce cut-off grade, enhance productivity and facilitate possible additional mine expansion. RUC Mining was contracted to develop all the large excavations associated with this project.

oyu toLgoi

The South Gobi province of Mongolia, some 550 km from the capital, Ulaanbaatar, contains some of the largest undeveloped deposits of copper and gold in the world. The development of the Oyu Tolgoi project (the name means ‘Turquoise Hill’) is being managed by Rio Tinto on behalf of the joint venture partners.

RUC Mining is contracted to excavate and support all of the underground mass excavations at this immense project, where extremely tight tolerances are demanded throughout. The mine will transform Mongolia and create major economic, social and environmental change over its potential life of over 50 years. Copper production is expected to rapidly reach 150,000 tpa in concentrates, with gold operations delivering around 750,000 oz in the same period.

Mechanised MiningOperators face a number of challenges as they strive to exploit ever deeper and more complex orebodies. Realistic development and extraction rates must be achieved, whilst ensuring that the quest for an incident-free safety record is in no way compromised. For this reason, mine owners are increasingly turning to the more highly mechanised mining solutions, as offered by RUC Mining.

Mechanised mining offers the best of both worlds – rapid development with faster access to new reserves, and far fewer personnel involved at the active face. It means that owners can be generating revenue earlier in the life of the mine, whilst enjoying the productivity, cost and safety enhancements that mechanised mining brings.

By working with RUC Mining, owners profit from the increased efficiency of modern, technologically advanced equipment, together with the expertise of a highly-skilled workforce. The company has been heavily involved in providing skilled operators throughout Asia-Pacific and into Southern Africa. These personnel bring with them years of experience in developing and achieving highly effective and productive mining operations to optimise the benefits that come from mechanised mining.

integra cock-eyed BoB

Integra commissioned RUC Mining to undertake trial underground mining at its Cock-eyed Bob deposit in Western Australia, after surface drilling revealed high grade gold mineralisation at 300–400 m below the surface. It was felt that underground mining and mapping would provide greater definition of the high grade gold zones and the extent of the extremely high grades noticed in some of the surface drilling cores. The scope required a turnkey solution including the

full site establishment for this greenfields project, along with the portal excavation, capital development and production mining.

Integra was delighted that RUC Mining was able to deliver an extremely high standard of excavation, whilst maintaining an injury-free record for the duration of the exploration activity.

saracen karari decline

The Karari decline is located at Saracen’s Carosue Dam operations in the Eastern Goldfields. After a competitive tender process, RUC Mining was awarded the works to develop this underground mine, together with the establishment of two portals from within the Karari open pit.

RUC Mining are contracted to undertake all of the development, production drilling and stope extraction for this important Saracen project, which is likely to

provide future mill ore feed once the open pit feed is depleted. In executing the project RUC Mining and Saracen have worked closely together to troubleshoot problems associated with operating a new mine in a traditional open pit environment. Development performance and safety performance has been exemplary to date.

Raise DRillingDemand for raise drilling is increasing, as mine operators constantly seek productivity improvements without compromising safety imperatives. RUC Mining is regarded as the industry leader in this specialised area, with extensive experience across the widest range of conditions. With a large fleet of raise boring equipment suitable for every situation, the company is in a unique position to deliver the most effective solutions, whether raise drilling of vertical shafts, or vertical and inclined drilling of boxholes.

Applications include pilot hole reaming for shaft sinking, escape rises, ore passes, ventilation shafts and borehole hoisting.

There are few innovations that have given miners as many benefits as modern raise drilling. By reaming rather than blasting, smooth-walled bores are created that may need little or no ground support. Diameters can range from 0.66 m to over six metres, with pinpoint accuracy delivered up to 1,000 m or more in depth.

The implications for safety and manning levels are just as impressive. By using non-entry methods, no personnel enter the hole during boring, no blasting takes place, and there is limited exposure to falling rocks or harmful exhaust fumes. With only two operators generally required per shift, cost benefits are obvious – raise drilling is by far the cheapest, safest and most cost-effective approach to creating vertical and sub-vertical openings in mines and construction projects.

Shaft SinkingShafts are a core component of many underground mining operations – an activity that sits squarely in the critical path of the project manager’s schedule. Traditionally, it has always been one of the most challenging of operations, and for that reason it remains the preserve of specialist contractors like RUC Mining.

Challenges include restricted working space, tight timelines, underground water ingress, rigorous design and QA/QC requirements, together with geotechnical considerations, all of which have the potential to impact on the success or failure of the operation. Risks associated with the activity comprise not only schedule and cost, but also safety – particularly the risk of falls. As a result, modern techniques focus on improved safety and risk mitigation.

RUC Mining brings a huge range of experience and expertise to the discipline, gained from sinking and equipping some of the largest diameter shafts in the world, often in the harshest of conditions. The company has sunk shafts in environments ranging from the remote highlands of Papua, Indonesia to the dense conurbation of Hong Kong. RUC Mining provides a turnkey solution for shaft projects, utilising other core skills of the business to deliver a final constructed hoisting solution.

hong kong HATS 2A

The Hong Kong Harbour Area Treatment Scheme (HATS 2A) comprises a network of interconnected sewage tunnels and vertical shafts. These shafts collect sewage from a number of preliminary treatment works and convey the material to the Stonecutters Island Sewage Treatment Works via a total of 21 km of deep tunnels, at depths ranging from 70 m to 160 m below sea level.

RUC Mining met a number of complex technical issues in completing the contract, not least the challenges of working in one of the world’s most urbanised environments. Limited access for the delivery of materials and the need to protect existing properties from any negative impacts meant that planning and execution had to be of the highest order. Surrounded by high-rise buildings and working right inside the heart of this bustling metropolis, the company completed three 8.5 m diameter shafts and one 11.5 m diameter shaft, whilst keeping noise and vibration levels well inside the strict levels mandated by the city authorities. Safety considerations were paramount, and RUC Mining completed this demanding project with an excellent safety record.

frEEport GrASberG

PT Freeport Indonesia commenced mining operations in 1972, and in 1988 discovered the Grasberg mine in the remote highlands of West Papua.

Extensive capital works are currently in progress, principally related to the exploitation of large-scale underground ore bodies located beneath, and adjacent to, the existing open pit area. RUC Mining is extensively involved in the construction of the Grasberg Block Cave (GBC) mine, scheduled to become the primary ore source as the open pit operation is scaled back.

In the current construction stage, RUC Mining is delivering the GBC service shafts as a fully integrated turnkey project, including the excavation, station construction, equipping, hoist installation, associated

construction and commissioning. The scope involves civil, mechanical, electrical, instrumentation and structural construction disciplines.

There are a number of challenges which have been addressed by the company, not least of which are the logistical challenges in transporting equipment and personnel to this remote site, the high altitude, the complexity of the underground environment and the requirement to work to extremely tight tolerances.

Throughout the project, RUC Mining has concentrated on training and upskilling the Indonesian workforce, and is undertaking these highly specialised activities with fewer than 15% of the workforce as expatriates.

glEncorE GeorGe FiSHer expAnSion projecT

The George Fisher mine located near Mt Isa in Queensland is a significant base metals operation in the Glencore mining assets. As part of a major expansion project, RUC Mining was engaged to complete the excavation, lining and equipping of the LE72 shaft deepening. This involved a 400 m long raise drill excavated at 6.4 m diameter which was subsequently concrete lined to 5.8 m diameter. The project was completed on time and budget with no recordable injuries over 85,000 man-hours in what was a technically difficult and challenging project.

Freeport GrasberG

Located in the province of Papua in Indonesia, the Grasberg Mine is the world’s largest gold mine, and the third largest copper mine. The operation employs almost 31,000 people, with the principal mining operations taking place in a rarified atmosphere at heights of up to 4,000 m above sea level.

RUC Mining is providing specialist ground support for underground development and construction – operating the world’s largest fleet of modern mechanised Cabolters. The company has already achieved outputs that are double

HonG KonG HaTs 2a

Contracting to Gammon Construction, RUC Mining was required to water seal and consolidate all of the four production shafts that were sunk as part of this major infrastructure project.

Grouting pressures of over 70 bar were required, using cementitious and micro silica grouts. Water inflow at the completion of grouting was required to be less than 25 litres/minute/100 m of excavation, which was achieved even though the shafts were all located within 30 m of Hong Kong’s Victoria Harbour.

the pre-existing monthly performances, and is aiming to achieve even more productivity gains for the owner.

In keeping with the company’s policy of recruiting local personnel, RUC Mining has succeeded in training large numbers of indigenous Papuans and other Indonesians to reach high levels of technical skills in rock bolting and other ground support procedures. This has been a significant factor in supporting the efforts of the owner to meet the expectations of local and national government.

SpecialiSt Ground Support & GroutinGEffective ground support is perhaps the most important factor in ensuring the ongoing viability of underground mines – it follows therefore that operators must extract the maximum performance from every system component. As one of the largest installers of cable bolts in the world, RUC Mining is at the forefront of specialist ground support providers, helping clients to achieve productivity gains, whilst ensuring that safety is never compromised.

newcreSt Telfer

Owned by Newcrest Mining Limited, the Telfer gold-copper mines in the Great Sandy Desert of Western Australia comprise the Main Dome and West Dome open pits and the Telfer underground mine. In total, over four million ounces of gold have been produced since the mine reopened in 2004.

InCycle Shotcrete, a wholly-owned subsidiary of RUC Mining, was contracted to remote shotcrete line two shafts for the underground operations. Using their custom-built robotic shaft liner, the exercise was completed remotely, with monitoring taking place via CCTV. At no time was it necessary for the operator to enter the shaft aperture, eliminating both the exposure and falling hazards traditionally associated with this exercise.

Operating with a fleet of specialised ground support and service machines, RUC Mining is able to install, tension and pressure grout all types of ground support, whether cable bolts, resin bolts, split sets, grouted dowels, steel straps or mesh. Together with the company’s wholly owned subsidiary, InCycle Shotcrete, RUC Mining also delivers remote high-quality shotcrete and concrete solutions, either sprayed directly or as part of an integrated system over mesh and rockbolts.

In moving to eliminate hazards, RUC Mining has embraced the adoption of full and semi-mechanised systems for bolting and spraying. With both high and low profile machines, holes are drilled and bolted in rapid sequence in accordance with mine plans. The company’s remote spray units (including vertical shaft spray units) have gained rapid acceptance within the industry by eliminating the need for personnel to enter shafts or unsupported drives, thereby helping miners reach productivity targets in an environment of enhanced worker safety.

UndergroUnd ConstrUCtionWith the widest range of technical skills and expertise gained throughout the Asia-Pacific region, RUC Mining is ideally placed to deliver the full range of civil, mechanical, electrical, structural and installation services for all underground mining projects.

Underground construction is a highly specialised area where safe work practices and detailed planning are non-negotiable. The work is distinguished by the requirement to achieve pinpoint accuracy first time, usually in time critical environments where the quality of the excavation is paramount. Whether the client requirements are the installation of internal hoists, electrical substations, ventilation fan systems or the construction of sophisticated ore handling and conveyance systems, RUC Mining brings exceptional skills and value to the operation.

Freeport GBC CHUTE CONSTRUCTION

RUC Mining is contracted to install the ore chutes at Grasberg, this work includes: the civil, structural, electrical and mechanical construction and installation of the permanent chutes on the rail haulage level of the Grasberg Block Cave mine.

newCrest CadIa

Newcrest Mining Limited is the largest gold producer listed on the Australian Stock Exchange (ASX) and one of the largest gold producers in the world. Its Cadia Mine is a series of large underground and open-cut gold and copper mines in the Cadia Valley of New South Wales.

RUC Mining has been involved in a number of projects in the development of the Cadia block cave mining operation, including the excavation and construction of the crushed ore bins for the mine. The team was faced with challenging conditions and other technical issues in multiple user work areas under extremely tight timelines, all of which were successfully managed.

Freeport GBC SERvICE SHafT

As a major component of the company’s scope of work for the GBC Service Shaft Project, RUC Mining is contracted to install the full man and materials hoisting system. This includes the installation of all of the shaft steel, the construction of all of the hoist foundations and the mechanical and electrical installation and commissioning of the 1,875 kW, 4.1 m diameter Hepburn Blair winder, along with the shaft conveyances and compensating sheaves.

Hong Kong HaTS 2a

Designed to effect dramatic improvements to the water quality around the island of Hong Kong, the Hong Kong Harbour Area Treatment Scheme (HATS 2A) consists of a network of deep tunnels ranging in diameter from 900 mm to 3 m. Vertical shafts connect these tunnels to preliminary sewage treatment works on the surface. To ensure that future land development above the tunnel is not significantly constrained, the tunnels are designed to have at least 30 m of bedrock cover at depths of 70 m to 160 m below sea level.

RUC Mining was an integral part of the engineering and construction team contracted to complete this $4 bn HKD major civil construction project. The company was required to design and install all of the civil, mechanical and structural components for the production shafts, including the installation of an automated hoisting system for the future use of the Prime Contractor.
