Book of Remembrance5782 ✡ 2021

Temple Hillel B’nai Torah invites you to take this Book of Remembrance home after services today. You may turn to these readings when you light yahrzeit candles or at other times of prayer or reflection. These books will also be used for the yizkor services on Shemini Atzeret, Pesach and Shavuot.

May their souls be bound up in the bond of life.

Our lives are a wilderness

uncharted and unpredictable—

untimely deaths, unexpected blows,

unsuitable matches, unfulfilled dreams.

And yet, by gathering our heartaches together with others

we find something transformative happening—

our sorrows become windows of compassion.

Paths through the wilderness

hewed and marked by past generations

give us our bearings.

Patterns of meaning and significance emerge.

We are moved from self-pity to love.

Our individual heartbeats merge

with the pulse of all humankind.

Suddenly we no longer tremble like an uprooted reed.

Rabbi Alexander Schindler

Almighty One, what are human beings that You take note of them, Children of the flesh

that You should think of them?

A human being is like a breath,A person’s days are but a passing shadow. At dawn, life blossoms and renews itself,

At dusk, it withers and dries up.

You return a person unto dust. You say, Return, O children of humanity! Would that we were wise, and understood

what will happen to us in the end,

For when we die we take nothing away,Our glory will not descend along with us. So teach us to number our days

That we may gain a heart of wisdom.

When we are dead, and people weep for us and grieve, let it be because we touched their lives with beauty and simplicity. Let it not be said that life was good to us, but, rather, that we were good to life. Jacob P. Rudin

No matter how powerful death is, however terrifying the grave is, however nonsensical and absurd everything appears, no matter how black one’s despair is, we declare and profess publicly and solemnly that we are not giving up, that we are not surrendering, that we will carry on the work of our ancestors… Rav Joseph B. In the stillness of the Yizkor service, we take time to remember our losses, one by one. Whether a family member or relative, pause to recall a story, an image, a favorite saying or any cherished memory. Some losses are more complicated than others. Not all memories are sweet. Acknowledge your own grief and the emotions that arise as you recite the Yizkor prayers. Though our thoughts are private, we stand together as a congregation, embracing one another with compassion.

God filled with mercy, dwelling in the heavens’ heights, bring proper restbeneath the wings of your Shechinah, amid the ranks of the holy and the pure, illuminating like the brilliance of the skiesthe souls of our beloved and our blamelesswho went to their eternal place of rest.May you who are the source of mercyshelter them beneath your wings eternally, and bind their souls among the living, that they may rest in peace. And let us say: Amen.

PSALM 23A Psalm of David

Adonai is my shepherd, I shall not want.

God makes me lie down in green pastures

God leads me beside the still waters

God restores my soul;

God guides me in straight paths for God’s name sake

Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death

Your rod and your staff, they comfort me.

You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies.

You have anointed my head with oil; my cup runs over

Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life

And I shall dwell in the house of Adonai forever.

Let God’s name be made great

and holy in the world that was

created as God willed. May God

complete the holy realm in your

own lifetime, in your days, and

in the days of all the house of

Israel, quickly and soon.

And say: Amen.

May God’s great name be

blessed, forever and as long as

worlds endure.

May it be blessed, and praised,

and glorified, and held in honor,

viewed with awe, embellished,

and revered;

And may the blessed name of

holiness be hailed, though it be

higher (between RH & YK add: by far)

than all the blessings, songs,

praises, and consolations that

we utter in this world.

And say: Amen

May heaven grant a universal

peace, and life for us,

and for all Israel.

And say: Amen

May the one who creates

harmony above, make peace

for us and for all Israel,

and for all who dwell on earth.

And say: Amen.

Mourners Kaddish קדיש יתוםIt is customary for mourners, and those observing Yahrzeit, to stand for Kaddish.

At the rising of the sun and at its going downwe remember them. At the blowing of the wind and in the chill of winter we remember them.At the opening of the buds and in the rebirth of springwe remember them. At the shining of the sun and in the warmth of summer we remember them.At the rustling of the leaves and in the beauty of autumnwe remember them. At the beginning of the year and when it ends we remember them.

As long as we live, they too will live: for they are now a part of us, as we remember them.

When we are weary and in need of strengthwe remember them. When we are lost and sick at heart we remember them. When we have joy we crave to sharewe remember them. When we have decisions that are difficult to make we remember them. When we have achievements that are based on theirswe remember them. As long as we live, they too will live; for they are now a part of us as we remember them.

All Souls

Did someone say that there would be an end,An end, Oh, an end, to love and mourning?Such voices speak when sleep and waking blend,The cold bleak voices of early morningWhen all the birds are dumb in dark November-Remember and forget, forget, remember. After the false night, warm true voices, wake,Voice of the dead that touches the cold living,Through the pale sunlight once more gravely speak.Tell me again, while the last leaves are falling:“Dear child, what has been once so interwovenCannot be raveled, nor the gift ungiven.” Now the dead move through all of us still glowing,Mother and child, lover and lover mated,Are wound and bound together and enflowing. What has been plaited cannot be unplaited-Only the strands grow richer with each lossAnd memory makes kings and queens of us. Dark into light, light into darkness, spin. When all the birds have flown to some real haven,We who find shelter in the warmth within,Listen, and feel new-cherished, new-forgiven,As the lost human voices speak through us and blendOur complex love, our mourning without end.
