‘Diversity making Kingdom stronger’

Tribute paid to victims of Holocaust; Bahrain’s plurality hailed at the event

• Principle of ‘all humans are born equal in dignity and rights’ highlighted

• UN Bahrain office, Israel and German Embassies organise virtual event

• International Day of Commemoration in Memory of Victims of Holocaust

• Bahrainis draw values of tolerance from national heritage: Shaikha Ayesha

Staff ReporterTDT | Manama

Bahrain derives its strength from its diversity, said Ambassador Shaikha

Ayesha Ahmed Saqer Al Khali-fa, Acting Chief of Organisations at the Foreign Affairs Ministry, highlighting the principle that “all humans are born equal in dignity and rights”.

Shaikha Ayesha was speaking at a virtual event held to mark the International Day of Commemo-ration in Memory of the Victims of the Holocaust. The event was organised by the United Nations Bahrain office along with Israel and German Embassies.

“The Kingdom has always stood against violence based on ethnic origin, religion or race. We have a heritage, which firm-ly believes that all humans are born equal in dignity and rights. Our Constitution asserts that all people are equal in human dignity and there should be no discrimination.”

Shaikha Ayesha said Bahrai-nis draw their values of toler-ance from the national heritage. “The Kingdom’s laws affirm re-ligious diversity while protect-ing religious pluralism. We must aim to create a more peaceful world while ensuring that such crimes against humanity will never happen.”

Mohamed El Zarkani, United Nations Resident Coordinator, said the resolution passed by the United Nations in 2005 was a sharp reminder of the atrocities committed by the Nazi regime,

whose victims include six mil-lion Jews. “A third of Jewish population perished during the time and among the victims were 1.5 million children.”

He said remembering the past is crucial in safeguarding the future. “The UN is on the frontline to contain xenophobia, racism, anti-Semitism and other threats to peace. The world gov-ernments and media must play an important role in thwarting these threats. Let’s pledge to be vigilant against human rights violations.”

Eitan Nae’h, Israeli Ambassa-dor to Bahrain, said he himself is a second-generation Holocaust survivor. “It is the duty of all to

ensure that such evils will never happen. We should not allow history to be rewritten.”

Kei Boeckmann, German Am-bassador to Bahrain, said ‘Never Again’ is now the heart of German national identity. “The German government is committed to tack-le all discriminatory acts. We also work with all international bod-ies including the UN to promote diversity. The team at German Embassy Bahrain is privileged to be part of this effort.”

The event also saw Holocaust survivor Arnold Clevs, 89, de-scribe the tyranny he faced as a child under the Nazi regime. Arnold was born and raised in

1933 in Kovno, Lithuania. After the Nazi occupation, Arnold and his family were moved into the Kovno Ghetto.

He spent much of his time hiding from Nazi soldiers until 1943, when he, his parents and sister were taken to a labour camp outside the city. The men and women were divided, and the family was torn apart.

At one point during his time in the camp, Nazi troops along with their Lithuanian collabo-rators came to seize children to be deported and murdered. But Arnold’s father had hidden him in the roof and he survived.

However, Arnold was lat-er held captive by the guards. Arnold then endured a death march for days through the snow of Eastern Europe without food or water, witnessing the deaths of friends from exposure and Nazi guards and even fatali-ties from allied air raids. He was later liberated by the US Army.

“I was eight when the war broke out and was 12 when liberated. I thank the Government of Bahrain for organising the event.”

Verdict known today for son who set stepmother car on fireTDT | Manama

The High Criminal Court will issue today its verdict in the

case in which a Bahraini man is accused of setting his stepmoth-er’s car alight after an argument arose with his father.

The son, 29, had differences

with his father, and he went on to burn his stepmother’s vehicle in revenge.

His father reported him to the police station, using a voice message he received from him as evidence against him.

“You won’t sleep at night and you will see fireworks,” the son

said in the message. The father, meanwhile, said

that his son has had issues with him since 10 years ago and he wasn’t living with him for the past 12 years.

“On the day of the incident, he got angry because I didn’t help me to settle the issues he had

with his divorcee. Therefore, he sent this voice note. I left the house and I saw him beside my wife’s car holding a lighter. Then he set it on fire,” the father added.

The son was charged with damaging a private property and endangering people’s lives.

Geopolitical tensions hit UAE stocks, oil supports Saudi sharesReuters

Stocks in the United Arab Emirates(UAE) dropped yes-

terday following four days of consecutive gains after another attack by Yemen’s Iran-aligned Houthi movement on the Gulf state, while rising oil prices sup-ported Saudi Arabian shares.

The UAE said yesterday it in-tercepted a ballistic missile fired by the Houthis, the third such attack on the U.S.-allied Gulf state in the last two weeks.

Oil rose on Monday as a sup-ply shortage and political ten-sions in Eastern Europe and the

Middle East put prices on track for their biggest monthly gain in almost a year.

“Markets in Dubai and Abu Dhabi dropped a little in reac-tion to the recent developments. In contrast, the Saudi market

was supported by the strong oil prices and could see additional increases,” said Wael Makar-em, Senior Market Strategist at Exness.

The Abu Dhabi index (.FTFAD-GI) ended 0.7% down, though the index was up 2.5% for the month. Market heavyweight First Abu Dhabi Bank (FAB.AD) declined 2.7%.

In Dubai, the index (.DFM-GI) slipped 0.5%, reducing its monthly gain to 0.2%.

Emirates NBD Bank (ENBD.DU) weighed the most on index, falling 3.6%.

Dubai Investments (DINV.DU),

however, surged 7%. After the market close, the investment company reported a more than 78% increase in its full-year profit to 619.5 million dirhams

($168.68 million).Saudi Arabia’s benchmark in-

dex (.TASI) closed 0.1% higher to log a monthly gain of about 9%.

Alinma Bank (1150.SE) and Saudi National Bank (1180.SE) increased 3.3% and 1.1% respec-tively. The Qatari index (.QSI) closed flat as Qatar National Bank (QNBK.QA) lost 0.7% and Mesaieed Petrochemical Hold-ings (MPHC.QA) rose 2.3%.

In Egypt, the blue-chip index (.EGX30) snapped its six-session losing streak, gaining 0.3%. Talat Mostafa Group (TMGH.CA) in-creased 8.6% and Telecom Egypt (ETEL.CA) added 3.5%.

India says V Anantha Nageswaran named chief economic adviserReuters | Chennai

India’s govern-ment said on

Friday it had ap-pointed former business school d e a n a n d e c o -nomics professor V Anantha Nageswaran as its chief eco-nomic adviser (CEA), after his predecessor stepped down in December.

Nageswaran’s appointment comes days before the annual budget on Tuesday. The chief economic adviser generally authors the economic survey - a document that indicates the government’s policy di-rection and serves as a precur-sor to the budget. India will

release the survey on Monday, with projections for economic growth for fiscal 2022/23, a day ahead of the budget to be pre-sented by Finance

Minister Nirmala Sitharaman.K.V. Subramanian, Nag-

“He (Nageswaran) has also been a part-time member of the Economic Advisory Coun-cil to the Prime Minister of India from 2019 to 2021,” the Indian government said in a statement.

JLR owner Tata Motors posts quarterly lossReuters | Bengaluru

Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) owner Tata Motors Ltd (TAMO.NS) reported a

quarterly loss on Monday that was big-ger than expected and warned of rising inflationary costs.

The company expects chip shortages at JLR to continue through 2022 as suppliers gradually ramp up production, and is also engaging directly with chip manufactur-ers to secure supply longer-term supplies for the Range Rover maker, it said.

Tata Motors’ consolidated net loss came in at 15.16 billion rupees ($203.23 million) for the quarter ended Dec. 31, compared to a profit of 29.06 billion ru-pees a year earlier, when an easing of pandemic-related restrictions led to a pick-up in sales.

Total revenue from operations for the quarter fell 4.5% to 722.29 billion rupees, below estimates of 775.93 billion rupees.

Facebook owner Meta to lift veil off its metaverse businessReuters

Since October, Facebook has renamed the com-pany, articulated a vision of the internet where

people can digitally connect through virtual-re-ality avatars or teleport to see places like ancient Rome, and helped trigger the metaverse invest-ment craze. When the company, now Meta Plat-forms Inc (FB.O), reports fourth-quarter results on Wednesday, investors will get a new window into the financial impact of CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s current passion.

The company is hiring engineers and buying up multiple virtual reality gaming studios to build toward the metaverse, which is a broad futuristic idea of shared virtual realms that can be accessed via different devices and which Zuckerberg is betting will be the successor to the mobile internet.

Meta has said it expects non-advertising revenue to be down year-over-year in the fourth quarter as it compares unfavorably with the “strong launch” of its VR Quest 2 headsets during the previous year’s holiday shopping season.

News in brief u A court in army-ruled Myanmar will start an election fraud trial of deposed leader Aung San Suu Kyi on Feb. 14, a source familiar with the proceedings said on Monday, after she was accused of influencing the 2020 vote to win a second term in office. Suu Kyi faces trial in more than a dozen cases and so far has been sentenced to a combined six years in detention by a court in the capital Naypyitaw, in legal proceedings derided by the international community as a sham. She has denied the military’s accusations of fraud in a 2020 poll swept by her National League for Democracy (NLD) party. Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Suu Kyi, 76, is accused of influencing the election commission during the ballot. Former president and ally Win Myint and Min Thu, a former cabinet member, face the same charges, said the source, who asked not to be identified due to the

sensitivity of the issue.

u British Prime Minister Boris Johnson has received an update on the internal inquiry into alleged parties at his Downing Street residence that breached coronavirus

lockdown restrictions, the Cabinet Office said in a statement yesterday. Johnson, facing the gravest threat to his premiership over the alleged lockdown-busting parties at his residence and office at Number 10 Downing Street, has so far weathered calls from opponents and some in his own party to resign by saying people should wait for the report by senior civil servant Sue Gray.

u The African Union has suspended Burkina Faso from all its activities in response to last week’s military coup, effective until constitutional order is restored, the AU said yesterday. Burkina Faso had already been suspended from the West African regional bloc, the Economic Community of West African States, though ECOWAS stopped short of imposing sanctions after the Jan. 24 coup that ousted President Roch Kabore.

Biden’s agenda for the Oval Office meeting will also include the Iran nuclear talks and relations with Afghanistan, where Washington’s interests are now represented by the small Gulf country. Tamim will also meet separately with Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas and discuss arms sales and other military issues with Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin, an official told reporters.

98.9Globally, BA.1 accounted for 98.8% of sequenced cases submitted to the public virus tracking

database GISAID as of Jan. 25.

Israel last year joined a naval drill with UAE, Bahraini and U.S. forces.

Emirati and Israeli state-owned weapons makers have signed deals

to jointly develop an advanced drone defence system and unmanned military vessels.

KNOW WHAT

The BA.1 version of Omi-cron has been somewhat easier to track than prior variants. That is because

BA.1 is missing one of three target genes used in a common PCR test. Cases showing this pattern were assumed by default to be

caused by BA.1.

Scientists on alert over rising cases caused by Omicron cousin BA.2Reuters | Chicago

The highly transmissible Omicron variant of the SARS-CoV-2 virus - the

most common form of which is known as BA.1 - now accounts for nearly all of the coronavirus infections globally, although dra-matic surges in COVID cases have already peaked in some countries.

Scientists are now tracking a rise in cases caused by a close cousin known as BA.2, which is starting to outcompete BA.1 in parts of Europe and Asia. The following is what we know so far about the new subvariant:

“STEALTH” SUBVARIANTGlobally, BA.1 accounted for

98.8% of sequenced cases sub-mitted to the public virus tracking database GISAID as of Jan. 25. But several countries are reporting recent increases in the subvariant known as BA.2, according to the

World Health Organization. In addition to BA.1 and BA.2,

the WHO lists two other subvari-ants under the Omicron umbrella: BA.1.1.529 and BA.3. All are closely related genetically, but each fea-

tures mutations that could alter how they behave.

Trevor Bedford, a computa-tional virologist at Fred Hutchin-son Cancer Center who has been tracking the evolution of SARS-

CoV-2, wrote on Twitter on Fri-day that BA.2 represents rough-ly 82% of cases in Denmark, 9% in the UK and 8% in the United States, based on his analysis of sequencing data from the GISAID database and case counts from the Our World in Data project at the University of Oxford.

BA.2, sometimes known as a “stealth” subvariant, does not have the same missing target gene. Instead, scientists are mon-itoring it the same way they have prior variants, including Delta, by tracking the number of virus genomes submitted to public da-tabases such as GISAID.

As with other variants, an in-fection with BA.2 can be detected by coronavirus home tests kits, though they cannot indicate which variant is responsible, ex-perts said.

MORE TRANSMISSIBLE?Some early reports indicate

that BA.2 may be even more infec-tious than the already extremely contagious BA.1, but there is no evidence so far that it is more likely to evade vaccine protection.

Danish health officials estimate that BA.2 may be 1.5 times more transmissible than BA.1, based on preliminary data, though it likely does not cause more severe disease.

In England, a preliminary anal-ysis of contact tracing from Dec. 27, 2021, through Jan. 11, 2022, by

the UK Health Security Agency (HSA) suggests that household transmission is higher among contacts of people infected with BA.2 (13.4%) compared with other Omicron cases (10.3%).

The HSA found no evidence of a difference in vaccine effec-tiveness, according to the Jan. 28 report.

A critical question is whether people who were infected in the BA.1 wave will be protected from BA.2, said Dr. Egon Ozer, an in-fectious disease expert at North-western University Feinberg School of Medicine in Chicago.

That has been a concern in Denmark, where some places that saw high case counts of BA.1 infections were reporting rising cases of BA.2, Ozer said.

If prior BA.1 infection does not protect against BA.2, “this could be sort of a two-humped camel kind of wave,” Ozer said. “It’s too early to know if that will happen.”

The good news, he said, is that vaccines and boosters still “keep people out of the hospital and keep people from dying.”

Israeli prez presses on with Dubai visit after UAE intercepts missile• Yemen’s Houthis threaten more attacks on UAE

• Israeli president presses on with visit to Expo Dubai

• UAE prides itself as safe business haven

• Attacks mark escalation in Yemen conflict

• UAE, Gulf states basing new security ties on Iran concerns

Reuters | Dubai

Israel’s president spoke at Du-bai’s Expo 2020 world fair yesterday on the first presi-

dential visit to the United Arab Emirates, despite the Gulf state overnight saying it had intercept-ed a ballistic missile fired by Yem-en’s Houthis.

The UAE became the first Gulf state to normalise relations with Israel under a US-brokered nor-malisation agreement, dubbed the “Abraham Accords,” in 2020. Gulf neighbour Bahrain then followed.

“I hope and I believe that more and more nations will soon follow

the UAE lead and join the Abra-ham Accords,” Isaac Herzog said at an event amid tighter than usu-al security at the Expo site.

The presidency in Israel is a largely ceremonial post. Prime Minister Naftali Bennett visited the UAE in December.

The UAE and Israel share con-cerns about Iran and its regional allies, and also see the agreements as a way to boost their economies.

“Already our trade has exceed-ed over $1 billion, more than 120 agreements were signed and a $100 million (research and de-velopment) fund was established recently,” Herzog said in a speech at the six-month long world fair in Dubai emirate where UAE and

Israeli flags were raised and both countries’ national anthems were played.

He said 250,000 Israelis had so far visited the UAE and he hoped Emiratis would reciprocate once COVID-19 restrictions eased.

Herzog landed in the UAE cap-ital Abu Dhabi on Sunday where he discussed security and bilat-eral relations with the UAE’s de facto leader.

That night, at 20 minutes past midnight, the UAE said it inter-cepted a ballistic missile fired by Yemen’s Iran-aligned Houthi wgroup; the third such attack on US-allied UAE in the past fort-night.

UAE authorities did not say whether the missile was aimed at Abu Dhabi or Dubai.

Useless provocations

A senior Emirati official described the attacks as

“useless” provocations that would be dealt with to safe-guard national security and sovereignty. “Those who test the UAE are mistaken,” the of-ficial, Anwar Gargash, said in a Twitter post.

The UAE defence ministry said the missile was intercept-ed at 20 minutes past mid-night and its debris fell on an uninhabited area. It did not say whether it was aimed at Abu Dhabi or Dubai.

US condemns attack

The United States con-demned the assault -

which followed a Jan. 17 strike on a fuel depot in Abu Dhabi that killed three people - in an escalation of the Yemen war between the Houthis and a Saudi-led coalition, which includes the UAE.

“While Israel’s president is visiting the UAE to build bridges and promote stability across the region, the Houth-is continue to launch attacks that threaten civilians,” U.S. State Department spokesman Ned Price said in a tweet.

US prepared to sanction Russian elites close to Putin if Russia invades Ukraine

Reuters | Washington

The United States and its allies have prepared a list

of Russian elites in or near Russian President Vladimir Putin’s inner circle to hit with economic sanctions should Russia invade Ukraine, a sen-ior administration official said yesterday.

“The individuals we have identified are in or near the inner circles of the Kremlin and play a role in government decision making or are at a minimum complicit in the Kremlin’s destabilizing behav-ior,” the official said, speaking on condition of anonymity.

The United States has devel-oped specific sanctions pack-ages for both Russian elites who meet the criteria and their family members, and these ef-forts are being pursued in co-ordination with US allies and partners, the official said.

Targeting Russian oligarchs is only one part of a plan by the United States and its allies to punish Putin should he launch an invasion of Ukraine after massing tens of thousands of troops on the Ukraine border. Russia denies that it plans to invade Ukraine.

President Joe Biden has not ruled out putting sanctions on Putin himself.

US officials have already de-tailed other penalties that in-clude sanctions on Russian fi-

nancial institutions and export control measures that could attempt to choke off broad swaths of industrial and con-sumer technologies to Russia.

The official would not pro-vide names of Russian figures who could be sanctioned.

“There is a broad list of in-dividuals we can pull from,” the official said, noting that some will be from a classified list of senior Russian political figures and oligarchs outlined in Section 241 of the “Coun-tering America’s Adversaries Through Sanctions Act” in a report sent to the US Congress in 2018.

“We cannot disclose the con-tents of this list or name spe-cific names given flight risks, but it provides ample targets and family networks involved in stashing their assets,” the official said.

The official said many of the individuals are particularly vulnerable targets because of deepened financial ties with the West.

“Putin’s cronies will no longer be able to use their spouses or other family mem-bers as proxies to evade sanc-tions. Sanctions would cut them off from the internation-al financial system and ensure that they and their family members will no longer able to enjoy the perks of parking their money in the West and attending elite Western uni-versities,” the official added.

North Korea tests biggest missile since 2017, US calls for talksReuters | Seoul

North Korea confirmed yes-terday it had launched a

Hwasong-12 ballistic missile, the same weapon it had once threatened to target the US ter-ritory of Guam with, sparking fears the nuclear-armed state could resume long-range test-ing.

The launch of the interme-diate-range ballistic missile (IRBM) was first reported by South Korean and Japanese authorities on Sunday. It was

the seventh test conducted by North Korea this month and the first time a nuclear-capable missile of that size has been launched since 2017.

The United States is con-cerned North Korea’s esca-lating missile tests could be precursors to resumed tests of nuclear weapons and inter-continental ballistic missiles (ICBMs) and vowed an un-specified response “designed to show our commitment to our allies,” a senior U.S. official told reporters in Washington.

More than 100,000 Americans died from diabetes in 2021,

marking the second consecutive year for that grim milestone and spurring a call for a federal mobi-lization similar to the fight against HIV/AIDS.

The new figures come as an expert panel urges Congress to overhaul diabetes care and pre-

vention, including recommenda-tions to move beyond a reliance on medical interventions alone. A report released earlier this month calls for far broader policy chang-es to stem the diabetes epidemic, such as promoting consumption of healthier foods, ensuring paid maternal leave from the work-

place, levying taxes on sugary drinks and expanding access to affordable housing, among other areas.

In 2019, diabetes was the sev-enth-leading cause of death in America and claimed more than 87,000 lives, reflecting a long-run-ning failure to address the illness

and leaving many more vulnera-ble when the COVID-19 pandemic hit, creating new hurdles to ac-cessing care.

Since then, the nation’s toll from diabetes has increased sharply, surpassing 100,000 deaths in each of the last two years and repre-senting a new record-high level,

according to a Reuters analysis of provisional death data compiled by the Centers for Disease Con-trol and Prevention (CDC). Diabe-tes-related deaths surged 17% in 2020 and 15% in 2021 compared to the prepandemic level in 2019. That excluded deaths directly attributed to COVID-19. The CDC concurred with the Reuters anal-ysis and said additional deaths from 2021 are still being tallied.

Lioness kills keeper, escapes Iran zoo with mate

AFP | Tehran

A female lion in an Iranian zoo attacked and killed

a keeper and escaped with a mate before the pair was cap-tured again, local media re-ported yesterday.

“The lioness, which has been in the zoo for several years, managed to open a door of the cage, get out and then attack the 40-year-old guard who had just brought food to the pair of felines,” a zoo employee told state broadcaster IRIB.

He said “the two animals managed to escape” Sunday from their cage in the zoo in the city of Arak, Markazi prov-ince, about 200 kilometres (125 miles) southwest of Tehran.

“Immediately after the in-cident, security forces took control of the zoo”, Amir Hadi, the governor of the province was quoted as saying by state news agency IRNA.

He added that “efforts to capture the two felines alive have been successful”.

Pakistan police call for PUBG game ban after family massacreAFP | Lahore

Pakistani police called Mon-day for the wildly popu-

lar PlayerUnknown’s Battle-grounds (PUBG) game to be banned after a teenager con-fessed to killing four members of his family in a rage after bingeing for days playing on-line.

Police said Ali Zain shot dead his mother, two sisters and a brother on January 18, and claimed under questioning at the weekend that the game had driven him to violence.

“This is not the first incident of its nature,” police investi-gator Imran Kishwar told re-porters in the eastern city of Lahore, adding “so we have decided to recommend a ban”

Kishwar said Ali, 18, lived in complete isolation in his room and was addicted to the game.

Dawn newspaper quoted a Lahore police officer as saying Ali “fired at his family think-ing that they will also come back to life, as happened in the game”.

Telecoms authorities in Pa-kistan have previously tem-porarily blocked access to the game after complaints about its violent content.

The game has been banned -- briefly or permanently -- in several other countries, in-cluding India and China.

24 coup that ousted President Roch Kabore.

u President Joe Biden and Qatar’s emir, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani, will huddle

to discuss a broad agenda including energy security in the aftermath of a potential Russian invasion of Ukraine, US officials said.

Halle Berry: I always have something to prove

Bang Showbiz | Los Angeles

Halle Berry thinks she’s always hav-ing to “prove” her-

self.The Oscar-winning

actress is one of the best-known stars

in Hollywood, but Halle still feels like she needs to

keep proving herself.In a clip from ABC’s

‘Screen Queens Rising’ - which has been shared with

People - the actress says: “I feel like I’m someone who is always asked to prove them-selves, over and over and over and over again. I’m always hav-

ing to prove.”Halle, 55, believes she’s faced

constant obstacles during her time in the movie business.

The acclaimed actress says: “The fight has been consistent. Obstacle after obstacle, fight every single day.”

In December, meanwhile, Halle revealed she set her Razzie Award “on fire”.

The movie star won the Worst Actress gong at the parody awards cere-mony for her performance in ‘Catwoman’ - which was released in 2004 - and Halle explained what she did with her Razzie.

She said: “I went to the Razzie [Awards] because I feel like we all take ourselves so seriously.

“If we get an award, if we get the Oscar, we somehow are made to feel like we’re

somehow better than everybody else, but we’re really not. You

were just chosen that year by your peers, and you were ac-knowledged for doing what they considered stellar work … If you find yourself face to

face with a Razzie, does that mean you’re the worst actor there ever was? Probably not.

“You just got the p*** taken out on you that year by a group of people that can.”

Halle won the Academy Award for Best Actress for her performance in ‘Monster’s Ball’.

And she compared that experience to being handed a Razzie.

Bradley Cooper: I have a crazy work ethicIANS | Los Angeles

Hollywood star Bradley Cooper has admitted

that his passionate approach to work can occasionally make life difficult for some of his co-stars.

Cooper, who has starred in films such as ‘American Sniper’, ‘A Star Is Born’, and the ‘Hangover’ franchise, ex-plained: “Love equals disci-pline. If I love something, I can have the discipline.

“I have a crazy work eth-ic. That is definitely true. So much so that the jobs that I have taken in the last five or six years, the people that I’ve worked with, I have said, ‘I work really hard, and this isn’t going to be easy. And it’s because I love it so much.”

He’s now des-perate to make the most of every op-portunity that comes his way.

The Hollywood star told Variety: “The thing that I just cannot live with myself is if I didn’t use that time to work as hard as I

could to get it to the best place it could be. I grew up with this idea that we do what we do for a living; I dreamt it.”

He suggested he’s already surpassed his own career expecta-tions.

However, he doesn’t have any intention of slowing down anytime soon and his passion for making movies remains as strong as

ever.The actor shared: “I

don’t know if I ever dreamt this big. I don’t even know if I allowed myself to. Shame on me if I don’t work

hard, and I’m here now. I’m not going to squander this.

No way, man. No way. It all comes from love.”

Drew Barrymore reveals she used to be in an ‘open relationship’ with Luke WilsonANI | Washington

Giving fans a peek into her past love life, Hollywood

star Drew Barrymore has re-cently revealed that she was previously in an ‘open relation-ship’ with actor Luke Wilson.

The 46-year-old actor has been a part of showbiz since her childhood and is known to share some of her wilder mem-ories on her talk show when she reminisces with other stars she’s known for decades.

According to Fox News, during Thursday’s episode of ‘The Drew Barrymore Show’, the actor chatted with Kate Hudson, another former child star, about their “young and wild” days together in the early 2000s.

“When we first met, we were young and wild,” Barrymore said as she and Hudson pieced together that they first met at a restaurant called Chez Jay in Santa Monica, California. Their fellow actor Luke Wilson was also present, both of them

recalled.“You were doing ‘Alex and

Emma’ together, I think,” Bar-rymore said of the 2003 rom-com starring Hudson and Wil-son, who is now 50. She contin-ued, “And I was dating him, but I think he was also dating other people.”

She then explained that theirs “was an open relation-ship,” adding, “We were young.”

Barrymore isn’t the only one to have had such an experience, as Hudson added, “I’ve been there with a Wilson, too.”

Page Six reported that Bar-rymore and Wilson dated beginning in the late 1990s, while Hudson dated the actor’s brother Owen Wilson after they met in 2006 while filming “You, Me and Dupree.”

Barrymore further ex-plained, “It’s so fun because when you’re young, you’re like, ‘It’s low-stakes,’ we’re just young, we’re having fun, we’re all playing, acting, hanging out.”

She said that while they weren’t taking anything “seriously” at the time, she and Hudson “had the best time” together.

As per People maga-zine, Barrymore also gave Hudson props for her im-pression of her on ‘Saturday Night Live’ back in 2000, saying, “You nailed it.”

Elizabeth Mitchell to reprise her role in new ‘Santa Clause’ seriesANI | Washington

Disney Plus’s ‘The San-ta Clause’ series has

brought on American actor Elizabeth Mitchell to re-prise her role from the film franchise.

According to Variety, the series, which was an-nounced on January 14, will see Tim Allen once again play Santa Claus/Scott Cal-vin.

Mitchell will play Scott’s wife, Carol Calvin, a.k.a. Mrs. Claus. She first played the role in ‘The Santa Clause

2’ and did so again in ‘The Santa Clause 3: The Escape Clause’.

I n t h e s e r i e s , Scott Calvin is on the brink of his 65th birthday and real-

izes that he can’t be Santa forever. He’s starting to

lose a step in his Santa duties, and

more importantly, he’s got a family who could benefit from a

life in the normal world, especially his two kids who have grown up at the Pole.

Jason Bateman: Combining acting, directing is more efficientIANS | Los Angeles

Actor Jason Bateman has combined the roles on

‘Ozark’ and he’s explained the appeal of acting and directing the Netflix crime drama series.

The 53-year-old star, who plays the part of Martin ‘Mar-ty’ Byrde on ‘Ozark’, said: “It’s more efficient for me to be playing a character in something, because that’s one less person I need to direct.

“I don’t have to have any sort of creative negoti-ation with that actor. Especial-ly when I’m the lead character, I can just adjust my

own performance to motivate a different performance out of the other actor.”

“I can get them to speed up or slow down or trick them by being more emotional.”

Despite this, Bateman doesn’t consider himself to be a control freak.

He told the Guardian news-paper: “I had a very fortunate first experience. My first big

job, ‘Little House on the Prai-rie’, had Michael Landon as the director, actor, producer

- and sometimes writer.“There’s this theory

that you need to scream at people to get them to work their hardest. I saw by example there that the opposite is true.”

Everton appoint Lampard to save Premier League statusEverton appoint former Chelsea boss Frank Lampard as new manager to replace Rafael Benitez

• Lampard signs contract to 2024

AFP | London

Everton yesterday ap-pointed Frank Lampard as their new manager on

a two-and-a-half year deal with the task of keeping the Toffees in the Premier League.

The former England interna-tional will take charge for the first time on Saturday when Everton host Brentford in the fourth round of the FA Cup.

“It is a huge honour for me to represent and manage a club the size and tradition of Everton Football Club. I’m very hungry to get started,” said Lampard.

“I think Everton is a unique club in that you can really un-derstand what the fans want to see. The first thing they want is fight and desire and that must always be our baseline.

“My first message to the play-ers will be that we have to do this together. We’ll try to do our

job and I know the fans will be there backing us.”

Lampard takes charge with Everton just four points above the relegation zone.

Rafael Benitez was sacked earlier in January following a 2-1 defeat relegation rivals Nor-wich.

The Spaniard had been an unpopular appointment with Everton fans due to his history

as a Champions League-winning manager for Liverpool.

Supporters protested inside Goodison Park after a 1-0 de-feat to Aston Villa on January 22 and outside the stadium over the past week at the running of the club by British-Iranian busi-nessman Farhad Moshiri.

Moshiri has spent over half a billion pounds ($672 million) on transfers since his takeover in

2016, but much of that money has been wasted.

Lampard becomes the club’s seventh permanent manager in less than six years.

His former England teammate Wayne Rooney turned down the chance to have an interview for the job, while Portuguese coach Vitor Pereira was reportedly the favourite until a fan revolt against his appointment.

“I am really delighted that Frank has joined us,” said Moshiri.

“He has played at the very highest level of the game and has football in his blood. He im-pressed us all greatly during the thorough interview process and we’re all ready to give him all of our support as he looks to give the team an immediate boost.”

After the visit of Brentford, Lampard has a baptism of fire back in the Premier League, with a trip to fellow-strugglers Newcastle on February 8 that could have a huge bearing on who is relegated at the end of the season.

The 43-year-old, Chelsea’s all-time leading goalscorer as a player, started his managerial career at Derby.

He led the Rams to the Cham-pionship play-off final in his only season in charge at Pride Park, which ended in defeat to Aston Villa at Wembley.

Lampard led Chelsea into the Champions League during his only full season as manager at Stamford Bridge, but was dis-missed last January with the Blues languishing in ninth place in the Premier League table.

Australian Open champion Barty extends lead in rankings

AFP | London

Ashleigh Barty’s achieve-ment in becoming the

first Australian woman in 44 years to win the Austral-ian Open title has seen her consolidate her place atop the WTA rankings.

The 25-year-old has in-creased her lead over Aryna Sabalenka of Belarus -- who exited in the fourth round of the Australian Open -- to over 2,600 points.

Danielle Collins’s con-solation for losing to Bar-ty in Saturday’s final is the highest ever ranking for the 28-year-old American as she soars 20 places to 10th.

Poland’s Iga Swiatek -- who Collins beat in the Aus-tralian Open semi-finals -- has also risen to her highest ever ranking, moving up five spots to fourth.

The Czech Republic’s French Open champion Barbora Krejcikova moves up one place to third.

Canada beat United States 2-0 in World Cup qualifierReuters | Toronto

Canada struck early and again late on to defeat the

US men’s national team 2-0 on Sunday to remain unbeaten and extend their lead in the final round of CONCACAF World Cup qualifiers.

Canada collected a goal kick from U.S. keeper Matt Turner in the seventh minute and Jon-athan David set up Cyle Larin, who raced forward and fired in past a diving Turner, sending the fans at Tim Hortons Field into a frenzy.

Sam Adekugbe added a sec-ond deep into second-half stop-page time to wrap up victory for Canada.

“The guys feed me the ball, and Jonathan up top helps me a lot,” said Larin, who be-came Canada’s all-time leading goalscorer with 23.

“We’re a close team. We’re a brotherhood.”

Canada top the standings with 22 points, while the U.S. are second on 18 and Mexico, who play Costa Rica later on Sunday, are third with 17 points in the eight-team group.

After falling behind, the U.S.

looked like they would equalise when Christian Pulisic’s cor-ner found Weston McKennie’s head, but Canada keeper Mi-lan Borjan leapt up to swat the ball away, pounding his chest triumphantly after making the save.

Following a sloppy first half, the USMNT had more life in the second, especially after head coach Gregg Berhalter sent on Kellyn Acosta, Ricardo Pepi and Jordan Morris in the 69th minute.

The U.S. stepped up the pres-sure and had another excellent chance to score, but Paul Arrio-la’s bicycle kick from inside the box with about three minutes to go was off target.

Adekugbe then scored on the counter in the fifth minute of stoppage time to seal the win for Canada on a cold day in Ontario.

“This means everything,” Canada head coach John H e r d m a n s a i d o f t h e victory.

“For these boys, for these fans,

for this country. We’re turning into a football country.”

After the game, Berhalter had a positive take on his team’s ef-fort as they look ahead to host-ing Honduras in St. Paul, Min-nesota on Wednesday, while Canada travel to El Salvador.

“It was a game where, with that performance, you don’t expect to lose that game,” Ber-halter said.

“So for us we say, put it away, it’s done. Turn the page, now it’s about Honduras.”

The top three teams in the group will earn automatic quali-fication for the World Cup start-ing in Qatar in late November.

Djokovic remains number one despite Australian Open absenceAFP | Melbourne

Rafael Nadal’s record-break-ing 21st Grand Slam singles

title in winning an epic Austral-ian Open final frustrated Novak Djokovic’s hopes of being the first to do so, but the Serb re-mains world number one in the rankings released yesterday.

The 34-year-old was unable to play in the first Grand Slam of the year after being deported from Australia over Covid-19

vaccination issues but he ex-tended his record-breaking run as number one to 358 weeks.

Nadal’s beaten opponent in the Melbourne final, Daniil Medvedev, stays second but the Russian moves to within 1,000 points of Djokovic.

Djokovic will keep the points he earned from winning his ninth Australian Open title last year till February 21 as last year’s tournament was played at

the later dates of February 8-21.Na d a l re m a i n s f i f t h i n

the rankings despite his re-cord-breaking title and the only movement in the top 10 sees Italy’s Matteo Berrettini -- who lost to the Spaniard in the semi-finals in Australia -- rise one place to sixth.

Spain’s Pablo Carreno and Taylor Fritz of the United States enter the top 20 in 17th and 20th respectively.

Kyrgios lashes out at media, doubles rival over crowd issuesReuters | Melbourne

Nick Kyrgios has lashed out at the media and doubles

rival Max Purcell as he denied claims he had disrespected world number one Ash Barty following her Australian Open win.

Kyrgios and fellow Austral-ian Thanasi Kokkinakis won the men’s doubles title on a packed Rod Laver Arena on Saturday after Barty’s victory over Danielle Collins had giv-en the country its first singles champion in 44 years.

As had been the case throughout the tournament, the ‘Special Ks’ were backed by a raucous crowd as they de-feated compatriots Max Pur-cell and Matt Ebden to win their first Grand Slam title.

Kyrgios said after the final that the duo had “created probably the best atmosphere this tournament has ever seen”, which was interpreted by some media as a slight on Barty.

In an Instagram post which opened with an expletive aimed at the media, Kyrgios denied the charge.

“Honestly, I said nothing disrespectful to Ash Barty,” he wrote.

“I said that the crowd this year was amazing and I feel as if (Kokkinakis) and I were a big part of that. Ash’s father came to me and even said that.

“All I said was that when people watch me around the world the stadiums are full.”

Purcell, meanwhile, had suggested after the doubles final that the behaviour of the crowd had been bad for the game.

“As for Max Purcell you donut,” Kyrgios wrote. “Re-

garding your comments after the match you clearly have no idea about entertainment and sport.

“If you haven’t noticed there is a reason why people actually come to my matches, it’s be-cause the level and my game are actually worth watching.”

Purcell defended his com-ments and claimed he too had been misrepresented by the media.

Bahrain narrowly missed out on the gold medals in the 2022 Asian Men’s

Handball championship in Sau-di Arabia last night following a tough 24-29 defeat to cham-pions Qatar in the tournament final, played at the Ministry of Sports Hall in Dammam.

It was the fourth time in the last five editions of the compe-tition that the Bahrainis and Qataris met for the title, and each time the nationals had to settle for the silver medals.

Qatar, on the other hand, won their fifth straight crown. They had beaten South Korea in the previous championship held in

2020, when the Bahrainis took fourth place.

The result earned Bahrain their fifth silver medal in the history of the tournament. They were previously runners-up in their other finals appearances in 2010, 2014, 2016 and 2018. They also won the bronze medal once in 1995.

In last night’s title-decider, the Bahrainis trailed by a slim, three-goal margin, 11-14, and were still in the fight. But over the final 30 minutes, they could not overcome their opponents despite their best efforts.

Mo h a m m e d Ha b i b a n d Ahmed Fadhul finished as joint top scorers for the nationals. They finished with five goals apiece from seven attempts each.

Hassan Samaheeji, Moham-med Mirza and team captain Hussain Al Sayyad added three goals each, while Mahdi Saad and Ali Mirza scored two goals apiece. Ali Eid rounded off the Bahrain scoresheet with one goal.

Bahrain goalkeeper Moham-

med Abdulhussain made just five saves in the contest from Qatar 30 attempts.

Following the match, the two teams were presented their re-spective trophies and medals in an awarding ceremony.

Also claiming their accolades were hosts Saudi, who came away with the bronze medals after defeating Iran 26-23 in yesterday’s other match.

The top four were followed on the tournament’s final rankings by South Korea in fifth place. All five of the national teams secured their berths in the 2023 IHF World Men’s Handball Championship, set to be hosted by Poland and Sweden.

Ranked sixth through eighth on the final standings were Iraq, Kuwait and Uzbekistan, respec-tively.

Ninth through 16th overall were the UAE, Oman, Hong Kong, Jordan, Vietnam, Singa-pore, India and Australia.

Bahrain, coached by Aron Kristjansson from Iceland, competed in the Asian champi-onship with a 19-player squad. Aside from last night’s scorers, the rest of the team featured Bilal Basham, Mohammed Ha-bib Nasser, Mohammed Ali Ab-dulredha, Abdulla Ali, Hussain Mahfouz, Ahmed Al Maqabi, Ali Abdulqader, Ahmed Jalal, Qasim Qambar and Hisham Ahmed Issa.
