AKC National Owner-Handled Series(Remember to check the box at the bottom of the entry form)

The AKC National Owner-Handled Series is a non-titling competition for dogs that are exhibited by their owners that are not professional handlers. All dogs that are owner-handled and are not owned or exhibited by professional handlers* meet the requirements for this competition. Exhibitors must declare their dog is Owner-Handled eligible at the time of entry using the check box on the entry form. Eligible dogs will be identified by an asterisk in the judge's book, steward's book & the catalog. Dogs must be handled throughout the breed level competition for the regular show by an eligible owner. Professional handlers, household members and current assistants** to professional handlers may not exhibit the dog in any competition during the entire show. Owner-Handled Best of Breed will be selected from the dogs that are eligible to compete in the Best of Breed competition including Winners Dog, Winners Bitch and winners of the non-regular classes. • If the Best of Breed/Variety winner is Owner-Handled competition eligible, it will automatically be

Owner-Handled Best of Breed/Variety. • If the Best of Breed/Variety winner is not eligible for Owner-Handled competition and the Best of

Opposite Sex to Best of Breed/Variety is eligible, the Best of Opposite Sex to Best of Breed/Variety will compete against the eligible exhibits of the other sex to determine Owner-Handled Best of Breed/Variety.

• If neither the Best of Breed nor the Best of Opposite Sex to Best of Breed/Variety are Owner-Handled competition eligible and Select Dog & Select Bitch are both eligible, the judge is to choose Best Owner-Handled exhibit from the Selects and eligible Winners Dog or Winners Bitch.

• If one of the Selects is eligible, excuse all Champions and non-regular class winners of the same sex and then choose Best Owner-Handled exhibit from the remaining dogs of the opposite sex including the eligible Winners.

• If Best of Breed, Best of Opposite Sex to Best of Breed, Select Dog & Select Bitch are not eligible, the judge may choose any eligible dog remaining in the ring including Winners Dog or Winners Bitch as Owner-Handled Best of Breed/Variety.

• If the Best of Winners is eligible, the other Winner is ineligible since it was defeated. • No class dogs other than the Winners Dog & Winners Bitch are eligible to return to the ring. * Professional handlers are defined as any person who belongs or has belonged to a professional handlers' organization, distributed rate cards, or otherwise advertised or represented themselves as handling dogs for pay within the last five years. * *A current assistant is defined as anyone employed by a professional handler on a full-time basis, or assisting a professional handler at the show or any show during the cluster/weekend.

CHALLENGE TROPHIESCHALLENGE TROPHIES remain in the possession of the Bernese Mountain Dog Club of America, Inc. until they are permanently retired. The word “dog” shall mean dog or bitch.HEIDI'S LEGACY CHALLENGE TROPHY, This trophy is to be awarded annually to the Bernese Mountain Dog and handler team that receives the highest qualifying score in a regular obedience class at the National Specialty. To retire the trophy, the same person must win the Highest Scoring Dog in Regular Classes (HIT) three times, not necessarily with the same dog nor at consecutive Nationals, with one win from the Open Class and one win from the Utility class. Original crafted and donated by Russell & Peg Forte for the first BMDCA National Specialty in 1976, this large wood plaque features gorgeous hand-tooled and painted leather work depicting five images of working Bernese Mountain Dogs. The bottom of the plaque lists the name of each dog and handler team that has earned HIT at the BMDCA National Specialty Obedience Trial since its inception. The trophy is named in memory of April Rifenberg's Heidi (Bernfield's Astrea v CarMar TD, UD) who retired the trophy in 1986 after winning HIT at the 1980, 1983 & 1986 National Specialties. Vilma Kistner Briggs was the next individual to retire the trophy in 2008, by winning HIT in 1999 with “Java” U-UD Mocha Java Slurp, UDX, HCT (Open), in 2003 with “Charm” Thirdtym's A Charm, UD, RE, NA, NAJ, NDD (Novice), and in 2008 with “Latte” Ch. Brighteye Whole Latte Love, UDX, RE, NA, NAJ, NDD, HCT (Utility), Vilma donated the trophy back to the BMDCA in 2009 with a “challenge” that any future individuals, who retire the trophy, donate it back to BMDCA so the plaque will forever remain a part of our club's history and breed heritage.

The purpose of the Bernese Mountain Dog Club of America, Inc. (BMDCA) Futurity is to encourage the breeding of the best possible Bernese Mountain Dogs and to reward the breeders for their efforts. Correct and timely nominations of both the litter and individual puppies in compliance with Futurity rules, as well as entry and fee payment for the appropriate Futurity class at the BMDCA National Specialty, are required for Futurity competition eligibility. The 2018 Futurity includes litters whelped from October 1, 2016 through September 30, 2017, except that an exception to the age requirements is implemented when the BMDCA National Specialty Show for a given year is held earlier than April 1. In this case, any nominated puppies under 6 months on the date of judging are deferred to the following Futurity year, and will be allowed to compete in the 15 to 18 Months class.

The breeder of the litter must be a Bernese Mountain Dog Club of America, Inc. member in good standing at the time of breeding, as well as at the time of nomination. If there is more than one breeder of the litter, only one need be a Bernese Mountain Dog Club of America, Inc. member.

Individual puppy nominations must then be submitted by either the owner(s) or breeder(s) on or before the puppy reaches four (4) months of age by submitting the individual puppy nomination on the designated form and fee established in the rules ($15.00 payable to the BMDCA) to the Futurity Chairperson by mail or via online submission through the BMDCA website. Puppy owners need not be members of the Bernese Mountain Dog Club of America, Inc., but must be in good standing with the AKC. The nominated puppies must be entered in one of the Regular Classes in either Conformation or Obedience at the Bernese Mountain Dog Club of America, Inc. National Specialty Show and Obedience Trial. Fee for this entry must be paid. Futurity entry must be indicated on the entry form as an Additional Class. The Futurity Class entered will be based on the age of the puppy on April 1, 2018, and not on the age on the date of the show. All dogs will be eligible for only one Futurity.
