THANKS FOR THE VACATION TIPS, TFT!

Dear Editor,

I am one of the many Filipinos who have always wanted to explore the hidden gems of the seven

The Philippine government has announced that the

construction of the Philippines Pavilion at Expo 2020

Dubai has already reached 87 per cent completion.

Philippine Department of Trade and Industry (PDTI)

and Commissioner General Secretary Ramon Lopez said

that ‘Bangkóta’ is on track of its scheduled handover

in March 2021, with the teams involved exerting full

efforts. Bangkóta also highlights the country’s passion for

sustainability—sourcing majority of its materials from the

local markets of UAE. According to Lopez, such readily

available materials are among the contributing factors that

led to them staying on track of their schedule despite the

movement restrictions caused by the pandemic.

“I am immensely proud of our team for their efficiency

and hard work. Their sheer determination to showcase

the beauty of the Philippines through our pavilion has

made it possible for us to be on time for its unveiling at

Philippines Pavilion at Expo 2020 Dubai reaches 87% completion

the upcoming Expo 2020,” said PDTI Secretary Lopez. “The

Pavilion’s concept, including the materials to be used, has

been well thought of by the creators, a reason it became

easier for the team to go ahead and build the design. While

the restrictions and the novelty of the materials from the UAE

posed a challenge, they also unleashed within the team their

resourcefulness and creativity—allowing them to pull such

magnificent work without any delays.”

Omar Shehadeh, Chief International Participants Officer,

International Participants at Expo 2020 Dubai, also

commended the efficiency of the team in terms of the

construction of the pavilion, saying: “The sheer passion of the

people behind the Philippines Pavilion is truly commendable,

and I am honoured to have witnessed their creativity and hard

work coming to life through Bangkóta. I am confident that

Filipinos in the UAE will be further proud of their identity once

they get to witness what the Philippine team has prepared for

them in the upcoming Expo 2020.”

Philippine Ambassador to the UAE Hjayceelyn Quintana, for

her part, expressed her pride for the team behind the pavilion,

saying: “I am very proud of the Philippine Expo team for the

magnificent creativity they have unleashed in the creation of

Bangkóta. This will boost the name of our country at Expo 2020

and will no doubt create a strong presence for our community in

the world’s greatest show. I am looking forward to the unveiling

of our very own national pavilion and I am confident that it will

create countless opportunities for Filipinos to thrive, shine, and

cement their impact across various sectors globally.”

The design of the Bangkóta Pavilion, or “coral reef” in

ancient Tagalog, honours the natural resources that the

Philippines has to offer, specifically the architectural character

of the coral reefs native to the archipelago.

Designed by Budji+Royal Architecture+Design and curated

by Marian Pastor-Roces, the 1,386-square-metre pavilion

reimagines the Filipinos as a coral reef, interconnecting not

only with each other but also with the world, thereby making

them an extensive global community.

Secretary Lopez underscored that not only will the

splendour of Bangkóta be witnessed by the world, it

will also be showcased to the Filipinos back home, as

the pavilion will be brought to Clark Freeport Zone in

Pampanga once Expo 2020 concludes.

AN INFORMATION HUB

According to PDTI Assistant Secretary Rosvi Gaetos,

who also serves as the Alternate Commissioner General of

Bangkóta, the pavilion promises to showcase the Filipino

diaspora spread throughout the world through travel,

migration and technology.

“Bangkóta will deploy leading-edge art, architecture,

and design to present a nation bound by zealous

interconnectivity, a culture of compassion, and a tropical,

fevered imagination. It highlights the progressive

development of the nation through the state-of-the-art

portals that promise immersive experiences for visitors—

allowing them to embark on a journey of discovery of the

nature of the Philippines,” she said.

A research team from the United Arab

accomplish a qualitative research project

The project was completed within two

it is published in top-ranked journals.

Professor in the Mechanical Engineering

Department at the College of Engineering

have repeatedly warned the public

against using unregistered vaccines.

“Vaccines are kept in strict

conditions. They only work if they

are followed through from the

factory through the cold chain.

And this is only done by licensed

distributors. If people are getting

vaccines from unknown sources,

and they inject it with an unlicensed

facility, the probability of getting

counterfeit or spoiled is very high.

If something happens, there’s no

way to trace where this came from.

So there are a lot of dangers,”

Domingo told CNN Philippines in an

interview.

PASSION FOR SUSTAINABILITY

Resourcefulness is one thing Filipinos are known for, and the designers guarantee that it is widely

reflected in Bangkóta. Architect Royal Pineda, a Principal of Budji + Royal Architecture + Design, instils

various means to show this trait through art and humble materials like cyclone fencing.

Aptly located in the Expo 2020’s Sustainability District, Bangkóta is an actualization of the Philippine

government’s drive to promote sustainability, with majority of the items used sourced locally and are

recyclable. The pavilion, which shows organic and coralline shapes reef, forms around tiny polyps,

attached to different surfaces in different waters, to become vast networks—mirroring how Filipinos are

interconnected worldwide.

And, since it will be brought home after six months, the pavilion makes for a high-impact investment

for the Philippine government, especially since it makes prudent use of the people’s money.

DUDDLEY DIAZ. His sculpture, ‘Haliya’ is a depiction of the

protector and goddess of wisdom - one among many of his

works that are rooted in mythologies and religious beliefs.

LEE PAJE. Paje takes visitors to the Philippines’ expansive biodiversity

the second area ‘Man is Nature’ where they would find a forest turned

on its head.

IVAN SARENAS. Sarenas’ captures photos of species of birds

only found in the Philippines as part of his advocacy to protect

Avian species. His photos will be on display at the second area

of the pavilion.

BABY AND COCO ANNE. ‘Bangkota’ hosts a uniquely-designed

helix which showcases the descendants and origins of Filipinos

that represent the variety of the world – a description that

reflects the fourth area of the pavilion.

DENISA REYES AND TERESA BARROSO. Reyes and Barroso bring a

collaborative contribution for the fifth area of ‘Bangkota’ that conveys

their message of cultural sustainability. Barroso creates the sound

design for the fifth area while Reyes brings her creative energy from

her years as a stellar member of Ballet Philippines and as a former

Artistic Director of the Cultural Center of the Philippines.

DEXTER HERNANDEZ. Filipino street art is the name of the game for

Hernandez who has created an impressive wall mural that depicts the

life and times of overseas Filipinos located at the Imaginarium Deck 1.

TOYM IMAO. The Imagnarium roof deck at the ‘Bangkota’ will see a

huge architectural sculpture with a roof of birds created by Imao –a

metaphorical representation of Filipinos flying towards the futre filled

with optimism while staying true to their cultural roots.

DAN RARALIO. At the first area of the pavillion, Raralio takes

visitors between the past and the future with a sculpture of a

creature from the depths that is suspended in the air.

SCOTT “GUTSY” TUAZON. The Filipino photographer

captures his advocacy to preserve the country’s coral

reefs and marine environment in still photos that will be on

display at the second area of the ‘Bangkota’.

PATRICK CABRAL. Filipinos have been seafarers for thousands

of years – of which Cabral has masterfully created a symbolic

white boat sculpture at the third area of the ‘Bangkota’ – ‘Man

is Nature’. This sculture encapsulates the science-oriented story

of the 4,000-year movement of the Austronesian-speaking peoples

through the Philippines into the Pacific Ocean.

DAVID GUERRERO. BBDO Guerrero, led by their Creative Lead

David Guerrero, creates the Philippines’ ‘Gift to the World’ at the

fifth area of the pavilion – a 180-degree film that captures the

history of the Philippines’ identity as a water-oriented culture for

the past 4,000 years

RIEL HILARIO. Avian-human sculptures will be a grand sight

for visitors of ‘Bangkota’s seventh area – the Imaginarium

Bridgeway. These giant structures are Hilario’s representations

of the humane Filipino cultural power.

CHARLIE CO. Images of floating men and women will surprise visitors

at the Imaginarium Deck 2 at the seventh area of the ‘Bangkota’. These

“Don’t be complacent” – CBCP urges OFWs to remain vigilant in fight against COVID-19

OFWs not included in PH travel ban of countries hit by new COVID strain

The Catholic Bishops’ Conference

of the Philippines-Episcopal

Commission on Migrants and

Itinerant People (CBCP-ECMIP)

reminded overseas Filipino

workers (OFWs) to closely monitor

developments especially with

the new strain of the coronavirus

disease 2019 (COVID-19).

“Let us remember and accept that

this COVID-19 is not stopping, and

not slowing down. There is much

danger of its mutations. So, our

dear OFWs, don’t be complacent

but be very careful and take

much necessary precautionary

measures,” said Bataan Bishop

Ruperto Santos, vice chairman of

the Commission, in a statement.

He also advised OFWs to follow

the orders of Philippine officials

Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs)

from countries which have confirmed

cases of the new coronavirus strain

are still allowed to head back to the

Philippines.

Labor Secretary Silvestre Bello III

stated that all OFWs should expect

that they will undergo quarantine

once they arrive.

“They will be allowed to come

home pero they have to be subjected

to the 14-day quarantine. Kahit na

pagdating nila, na-swab sila, negative

sila, they still have to undergo the

14-day quarantine,” said Sec. Bello

during a press briefing.

The Labor Secretary furthered

that even OFWs who received

COVID-19 the COVID-19 vaccine

are still included in the mandatory

quarantine.

Sec. Bello stated that President

Rodrigo Duterte firmly advised to still

allow OFWs to head home, despite

the threat of the new COVID strain.

“You can come home for the

holidays, for the New Year, upon the

strict order of our President,” said

Bello.

The Labor Secretary earlier advised

and urged OFWs who just wish to

take a vacation to forego their plans

for the mean time.

in the countries where they are

employed, as per a report from the

Philippine News Agency.

“It is for our common good

and safety to set aside social

gatherings and unnecessary

travels. Always follow the

directives of our (Philippine)

Embassies, listen to the guidelines

of our Filipino chaplaincies,”

Santos said.

“Cooperate with them. Let all of

us be helping and healing hands

to one another,” he added.

Several countries have already

reported cases of the new strain

of COVID-19, which was first

reported in the United Kingdom,

prompting other nations to impose

travel restrictions and strict border

controls.

“Uuwi dito, magbabakasyon. Maka-

quarantine ng 14 days. Sayang ‘yung

panahon eh. Eh di hintayin na lang nila

na gaganda ang panahon. Yun ay payo

lang naman. Kung gusto nilang umuwi,

eh di OK lang. Kaya lang dadaan lang

ng 14-day quarantine,” Bello said in an

interview with GMA News.

President however said that OFWs

should be given the option to go home

no matter what.

“Sabi ko may total restrictions sa

mga galing ng UK except ‘yung mga

Filipinos na uuwi. OK lang naman pero

ang problema, kung OFW, uuwi dito,

magbabakasyon, maka-quarantine ng 14

days. Eh ganun kamahal ng Pangulo ang

mga OFW. Sabi niya, hindi, pauwiin mo,”

Bello said.

Travellers coming from these countries

will be denied entry to the Philippines,

except for OFWs:

• United Kingdom

• Switzerland

• Denmark

• Hong Kong

• Singapore

• Ireland

• Japan

• Germany

• Australia

• Iceland

• South Africa

• Italy

• Israel

• Spain

• Netherlands

• Lebanon

• Canada

• Sweden

• France

Rich said that after more than a

she finds this new job of hers

challenging.

“Fourteen years akong nasa

iyong challenge ng work ko

ngayon. At mabait kasi ang boss

ko at mga katrabaho kaya masaya

Rich joined Starstruck in 2006

and became its first Princess in

2007. She also joined Binibining

Pilipinas in 2009.

relationship with husband Ben
