Between Us ... This summer Joan and I had the pleasure to do
some extensive traveling. With Temple members we had a wonderful journey to Budapest and Vienna and Prague. Everyone found the experience to be exciting and quite moving.
Later we traveled to Nova Scotia, a very different kind of experience, seeing the physical beauty of Canada and the magnificent Atlantic Ocean. I was truly moved by the power and majesty of God's creation. 0 what has been bequeathed to us and how often we squander and despoil the wonderful and good earth. The Biblical author understood it when he wrote so poetically; the Rabbis understood it as well when they chose to include such words in our liturgy: "Let the Heavens be glad and the earth rejoice; let the sea and all within it roar, the fields and everything in them exult. Then shall all the trees of the forest sing for joy; in the presence of the Eternal. .. You see, they understood what a precious gift the earth is and how truly fortunate we are to live in it. It is a privilege that we should never allow to slip through our fingers.
In a small shop in Nova Scotia, I came across a small plaque that touched me in a special way. It
. read: "Life is not a rehearsal." At first, I simply smiled. But I have been thinking about that notion quite a bit. Our ancestors believed that this world, the one we live in, is a prelude to the Olam Habah, the world to come. Yet, they never suggested that we should live our lives now thinking that we could change them later in another world or another time. Quite the contrary; they understood that what we do with our lives in this world directly and permanently affects the lives of others. How well we know that to be true. Our actions reflect more than our own lives. They do have an impact, not only on the lives we live but also, on the lives of those who come along in the future.
What our faith does do is give us the opportunity, not to rehearse what will be but rather, to take the
Continued . . .
opportunity to change, to shift gears, to recognize our own faults and the failings of our communities and nations, and then alter them so that we can move toward the betterment ofhwnanity and a life truly worth meaning. It is called Teshuvah, a very powerful notion that hwnan beings can change their ways, that we can look at ourselves, see our faults, and improve
~. our lives. Teshuvah is a true gift, if we use it wisely.
Soon we will prepare for the High Holy Days, our Days of Repentance, a time for Teshuvah. This year, we will observe them in our renewed sanctuary. As we do, let us recall the gift of renewal granted to us; let us celebrate the incredible world that has been bequeathed to us for blessing. Let us see life, not as a rehearsal for another time, but as an incredible journey of shared living with loved ones, with community, and with faith in the future.

Musical Notes
Torah Cantillation for Adults Sundays 10:00-10:45 AM, beginning September 11
This course will provide the necessary tools for chanting any portion from the Torah on Shabbat. Cant illation is an ancient art that originated when the Jews returned from the Babylonian exile in approximately 500 BCE. Its symbols are the oldest form of music notation still in common usage. If you wish to leyn (chant Torah) at Shabbat services and enjoy the special thrill of reading directly from the Torah scroll, please join us! The ability to read Hebrew smoothly and fluidly is a prerequisite for this course. Please contact Cantor Ott at the Temple if you "are interested.
MakhelatAnshe Emet, the Adult Choir
Led by Cantor Anna Ott, the MAE sings monthly at Shabbat services, special music presentations, and choral festivals in and outside of the Temple. Rehearsals are held on Wednesday evenings 8-9:30 PM and Sunday mornings 10:45-12: 15 . Our fIrst rehearsal where we welcome our full membership plus new members, will be Sunday, September 11. Please contact Cantor Ott at the Temple to join, and fInd out what it means when our loyal and dedicated members say "All who sing, pray twice!"
Shirei Emet, the High School Choir Sundays, 12:30-1:30 PM, beginning September 18
This ensemble offers singers in grades 7-12 the opportunity to begin to explore and enjoy the riches of our Jewish choral tradition. They sing at Shabbat morning services as well as other programs in and out of the Temple, including Special Music Shabbat programs with Makhelat Anshe Ernet. The highlight of the Shirei Emet year is the Hazamir Winter Festival during Presidents' Day Weekend , where they will join with hundreds of other Jewish high school choral singers from all over the country in singing a wide variety of Jewish choral music with our finest conductors. Please contact Cantor Ott at the Temple if you are interested.
